  1. Raw presents a taped show, and it's filled with filler crap and six man matches. Impact tapes six-to-eight weeks worth of shows where they blow off the biggest storyline they've had all year, to make sure everyone knows what happened in advance.

    Sounds about right.

Not the worst show, pretty acceptable for a Christmas-week Raw.

  2. You'd think with the McMahons' right-leaning tendencies, the result of that match would have been very different...

  3. Along those lines, anyone think it was an accident that Good Santa was black? I know, I'm giving Vince too much credit.

  4. I vote for Wrestelmania IV. Or maybe IX. Possibly VI.

Honestly, I'd like to see a PG review of one (or some) of the earlier Manias. I think he'd do a really great job recapping them.

PG Week continues on the Blog as I will give you a special What If.
It isn't about a booking decision; it's about life or death.

  6. I thought this was one of the best Raws in recent memory, from what I watched. Everyone looked like they were having fun, which really reinforces my enjoyment of the show. There was a #1 contender's for the IC title match, which never happens anymore (even if it was on a pole), and there was a defined date for the title match, so they (hopefully) won't forget it. Punk and Cena delivered a classic coked up 80s promo which was fun to watch. The Santa match was bad if you strictly put it on a smark workrate scale, but it was fun to watch and I enjoyed it. The Usos vs the PTPs could have been a dull meaningless Raw match but Darren Young's Houston vitalized the crowd.

  7. That would be my one serious knock on this show... either WWE production took the holiday early, or they just did NOT give a shit about this crowd. Other than the occassional (SHORT) chant, it was DEAD. D-E-D, dead.

In his defense, how many wrestling related retirements really last?

  9. My 2 thoughts from Raw are as follows:

    1. JBL is an asshole. He is a locker room pariah, and possibly the worst color commentator of all time. He is also one of the worst singles workers ever given a lengthy main event title run. He killed the brand PPV's dead. Awful human being.

    2. I am stoked Batista is coming back. I am even more stoked he is doing it the right way and coming back for a run as a full time wrestler. I call it the "Jericho formula" and I for one am excited "The Animal" is coming back. Batista coming back and doing interviews only to build up to one match is a path I am glad they are avoiding. I for one am pulling for "The Animal and look forward to seeing him work on weekly television.

  10. Top 100? Seriously? I'm going to need to see that list.

  11. But he preaches hygiene but teaching rookies Joe to shower correctly!

  12. Here's what gets me: JBL was EXCELLENT alongside Cole in 2006-07. It makes me think he's just parroting Vince's lines. If he were left to his own devices, he and Cole would be a fantastic pairing; we know this because they were a fantastic pairing.

  13. I'm curious about Batista's return...I know when he left for MMA, he was noticeably smaller (wink, wink). Has he bulked up again in preparation for his return? Or is he coming back with a new look?

  14. I just wish Vince would come back to announcing. His style worked very well for him, especially all the unintentional humor. This style doesn't work well for everyone else. Vince and Jesse Ventura was one of my favorite announcer pairings. Vince can bring it in the booth. If Vince went back to commentary it could also organically set the stage for another Vince vs. Wrestler feud. JBL, Cole, and King doing Vince is just awful and cringe worthy. I've been playing WWE 2K14 this week and Jim Ross's commentary is just so refreshing and wonderful.

  15. Not all pole matches are the same! See Bagwell, Judy.

  17. Where does someone from Saskatchewan go on vaca? Regina? Hope u have a good one Scott we'll hold the fort down, and thanks in advance to Andy.

  18. No. The Orton match was probably a way to write him off of TV. With HHH/Steph they don't really need him. Plus Kane standing around in a suit and tie doing nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I doubt WWE.com really bothers to make that distinction...

  20. I agree. That was the most generic return hype ever. Should have just gone with a total "surprise" in the Rumble match. You can always do a "but who brought him back?" sort of thing afterward. He could be Vince's Guy, back to fuck with his old leader, HHH, OR he could be HHH's guy as he gets Evolution back together to dominate the roster

    ReplyDelete
  21. I almost think Batista's return is going to get lost in the shuffle with all the potential "returns" and big matches for Wrestlemania. Unless, of course, he wins the Rumble.

    ReplyDelete
  22. And, unlike JBL, Batista is a GREAT human being!

    ReplyDelete
  23. The only difference between JBL and Batista is that Batista had a great body, which White Thunder finds dreamy.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I can find a 100 matches from that year that are more technically sound than back rake, back rake, belt whip, leg drop, People's Elbow, Rock Bottom, Rock Bottom, Rock Bottom.

    ReplyDelete
  25. No, Batista could actually put together a decent match. JBL was a complete stiff in the ring.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I vote for WM 19 because I was there live and I always like to read/hear others' perspectives on the show.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Odd nit to pick, but something that REALLY bothered me during the show was Cole's non-reaction to Barrett basically stealing all the money he had collected.

Could you imagine if Gorilla Monsoon had completely no-sold one of Ted Dibiase's nefarious plans?

Just highlighted one of the major issues with today's product, that nothing is really taken seriously. Everything has this goofy, tongue-in-cheek feeling, like they're trying to be cool and funny by going meta. Friggin' terrible.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Which is too bad. I actually liked him as a weaselly toadie. I thought he fit the role well. But yes. There are way too many "Authority" figures. At one point it was Kane, Vicky, Maddox, HHH, Steph and Vince.
