Happy Friday BoD'ers!
Surely Punk has been catching up on his sleep and his video games this morning while frantically looking for Kelly Kelly's number since apparently she always wanted him to apply the anaconda vice. Yep I bet you this time off thing is going just as planned.
As for the rest of us, we'll just watch some of the matches we gave him and hopes he gets sick of running through some past flings. Speaking of which, I saw somewhere that apparently Maria is a smoker...and that surprised me a little. Be warned, she might not age well.
Anyway back to this match. Sometimes Punk didn't win the match but he was the story of the match due to his charisma and the brilliance of his heel persona. Here is one of those cases as he's locked in the 2011 Elimination Chamber with Sheamus, John Cena, Randy Orton, R-Trtuth and John Morrison. Speaking of Morrison...please...come back...thanks.

Those WCW DVDs sell way to well to say any of that...
ReplyDelete...the fans of the old days are the ones buying these DVDs, there is still an audience for WCW nostalgia and for Sting...
So many great matches that had such terrible/no build up: Just in the last year, the Raw classic (the result was a given, but damn it was awesome), the match with Jericho at Payback, and Undertaker (before the inserting of Paul Bearer's death) all had little to stand on and came out as some excellent matches worth rewatching over and over.
ReplyDeletethe heat definitely played a big part in my affection for MITB. The angle as well. The Raw match was smoother, but the drama a little more drained with the idea that Cena was totally winning.

ReplyDeleteI'm going with MITB because of one factor: It's a match, complete with the build up, that NEEDS to be seen by everyone. The Raw match was just a great match that was announced a week in advance with a finish that was never in doubt. It might technically be better, but MITB, while also being a classic match, has much more importance, and a molten hot crowd.
ReplyDeleteHe mentioned in some interview (maybe on a TNA dvd?) that how the WCW guys were treated was a part of it - he specifically mentions how Booker T was the WCW Champion and in The Rock's first promo with him he acted like he didn't know him.

Rude/Chono was an absolute disaster. Their G-1 final was a MOTYC.

As we all know, HHH was a big fan of Ric Flair, so it seems only natural that he'd turn on Sting. Hell, I think Flair should be ringside in their corner when it happens just so he can join in and turn on him once more for old time's sake.

These are all pretty awesome. In a vacuum, I like their Raw match better. Factoring in crowd, storyline, and significance, MITB is the easy call here.

ReplyDeleteThat's partially what I consider "tna stink." The fact that (a) he's no longer relevant bc he's been in tna for awhile and nobody has seen him (b) tna has taken any shine off of him for the few who have seen him
ReplyDeleteWrestlers by and large refer to each other by their 'stage names'. They also use their stage names when giving kayfabe interviews, even long after they've retired. It's just one of those weird quirks that makes wrestling unique.
ReplyDeleteAnd because wrestlers use their 'stage name' all the time even in kayfabe situations, it just comes off as unbearably snarky when someone refers to a wrestler by their 'stage' name, especially if a guy has been using that name for most of their career.
There are a some exceptions - especially for a guy like Sean Waltham who has had multiple character names that were successful to a similar degree

Some of it is due to not being seen by alot of people, probably the majority actually, but some of it would also be for being in a secondary promotion for all those time. Watts literally told them to tank the match to not outshine the next 2 matches, so we get a horrible contest instead (a far cry from their classic in Japan right before that). Simmons/Barbarian is awful, a Worldwide main event at best. Sting/Roberts is just terrible. No chemistry and Jake just could not go at all

Is the RAW match the one where Punk busts out the piledriver, and Cena busts out the hurricanrana? If so, that one's probably my favorite.
ReplyDeleteSting is not a great talker, and his best in ring years are well behind him. He also has the stink of two promotions that have both struggled or died with him at the top (not saying either was his fault, but he rode both ships down.)
ReplyDeleteSting belongs in the HOF, but other than that he just isn't that big of a deal, and he would not do well in any sort of GM role.
He still has name value and his value to WWE will be for merchandise sales and possibly as an on air talent on WWE Network....

ReplyDeleteBatista and Michaels both had pretty awesome/unreal chemistry with Cena, too. Although weirdly not with each other; their matches against each other weren't BAD, but they weren't any better than normal Shawn vs. Big Guy matches against inferior workers like Sid or Nash.

Never saw the Japan match with Rude/Chono. At the time all I had for WCW was Power Hour and whatever the one at midnight on Saturdays from the Toronto channel was called. I enjoyed the Barbarian/Simmons watch personally, of course I also enjoyed Boss Man/Bigelow from one of the Rumbles. It was a fun big man match, and Jake/Sting wasn't horrible, just crippled by a bad gimmick. I haven't seen the show since the original broadcast over 2 decades ago, but as a kid, I had fun with it. Hell, as a kid I thought the Chamber of Horrors match from the other Havoc show was hilariously fun to watch. If I watched it now it would probably be a different story.

ReplyDeleteThat's one problem with matches that are heavily scripted. Sometimes, things don't work as they are planned. And even though you think you scripted out this multilayered masterpiece, sometimes the fans aren't going to eat up everything you planned. Therefore, you kind of have to adjust. You have to do something different in order to win the fans back onto your side. That is why calling it in the ring is the best way to do a match. Sure, you can plan ahead some of the big spots and moments, but you have to be prepared to adjust accordingly. Due to tons of people being taught the WWE way - having the agents nearly layout your matches move-for-move - matches like Sheamus and Randy Orton are going to happen when fans rebel, as opposed to (earlier) Chris Benoit, Regal, and Finlay matches where the fans are chanting boring in the beginning of the match and then on the edge of their seats towards the end.
ReplyDeleteBut as Scott alluded to, matches that have slow build to the crescendo generally have the crowd in the palm of its hands instead of the crowd being in control and dictating the pace of the match.
It's a fun little match... And how can you not love a match where a guy gets electrocuted and they shoot off fireworks at the end? I tell ya, they were dipping into that MGM budget for that show!

ReplyDeleteTotally agreed. Unfortunately, the best counterpoint to both Cena (the hard-working, free-thinking guy) and Punk (the dirty-looking, anti-authority guy) is Orton.
ReplyDeleteAs boring as Orton is, his entire persona really fits in best from a story-line standpoint.
Morrison had an AMAZING run of matches in 2009 - Punk, Rey, Jeff... seriously, everyone should go out and buy Morrison's DVD, it's fantastic.
