A+ Match of the Day

Happy Friday BoD'ers!

Surely Punk has been catching up on his sleep and his video games this morning while frantically looking for Kelly Kelly's number since apparently she always wanted him to apply the anaconda vice. Yep I bet you this time off thing is going just as planned.

As for the rest of us, we'll just watch some of the matches we gave him and hopes he gets sick of running through some past flings. Speaking of which, I saw somewhere that apparently Maria is a smoker...and that surprised me a little. Be warned, she might not age well.

Anyway back to this match. Sometimes Punk didn't win the match but he was the story of the match due to his charisma and the brilliance of his heel persona. Here is one of those cases as he's locked in the 2011 Elimination Chamber with Sheamus, John Cena, Randy Orton, R-Trtuth and John Morrison. Speaking of Morrison...please...come back...thanks.

Enjoy.

  1. Those WCW DVDs sell way to well to say any of that...

...the fans of the old days are the ones buying these DVDs, there is still an audience for WCW nostalgia and for Sting...

    ReplyDelete
  2. So many great matches that had such terrible/no build up: Just in the last year, the Raw classic (the result was a given, but damn it was awesome), the match with Jericho at Payback, and Undertaker (before the inserting of Paul Bearer's death) all had little to stand on and came out as some excellent matches worth rewatching over and over.

    ReplyDelete
  3. the heat definitely played a big part in my affection for MITB. The angle as well. The Raw match was smoother, but the drama a little more drained with the idea that Cena was totally winning.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Exactly, its why the dvd was called Backdoor to Chyna and not Joanie loves Bukkake....

    ReplyDelete
  5. exactly my point. Punk's capable of building a livable house out of pine cones.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I'm going with MITB because of one factor: It's a match, complete with the build up, that NEEDS to be seen by everyone. The Raw match was just a great match that was announced a week in advance with a finish that was never in doubt. It might technically be better, but MITB, while also being a classic match, has much more importance, and a molten hot crowd.

  7. He mentioned in some interview (maybe on a TNA dvd?) that how the WCW guys were treated was a part of it - he specifically mentions how Booker T was the WCW Champion and in The Rock's first promo with him he acted like he didn't know him.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Just more dumb shit by Vince...

...the guy just gives away money sometimes(actually he once did, but thats another story)...

    ReplyDelete
  9. Rude/Chono was an absolute disaster. Their G-1 final was a MOTYC.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I feel like HOF for Sting makes sense with Luger inducting, or vice-versa.

    ReplyDelete
  11. If Punk needs a rest so bad, just wrestle Sting and have him put you in the Scorpion Death Lock.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Yea, I don't disagree. The wcw brand is long gone and he has Tna stink on him. MAYBE they could do some epic video packages to bring the wcw stuff back to the forefront. I just don't know how else to really get value outta him. Maybe the loner thing would work...

    ReplyDelete
  13. 'Oh hey Beth, it's Phil. You wouldn't happen to have Barbie's number, would you? I uh, need to talk to her about hair'.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Don't know if I'm bummed or happy I missed this thread.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Anybody catch Stone Cole on Arsenio Hall last night? Just watching it now on DVR.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Their RAW match as the WM29 main event instead would have been nuts

    ReplyDelete
  17. Christ *I* use ellipses really liberally. Maybe too liberally, but it's every post.

but now it's a gimmick for him, and monumentally less anoying as a result

    ReplyDelete
  18. I was hoping beyond belief for Punk to win and make it a 3-way, something to get him in the match, but that was never going to happen. :(

    ReplyDelete
  19. "What is the Crow looking fella doing in the NXT Zone?!"

    ReplyDelete
  20. Oh man, when Sting comes out and he's not Daniel Bryan, the entire audience is going to turn on him.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Michael Cole was on Arsenio?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Just have Sting grow a beard and come out like Big Show saying "YES! YES! YES!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Rumor has it that he is watching Randy Orton DVDs whenever he cant sleep...

    ReplyDelete
  24. Daniel Borden *clap clap...clap clap clap* Daniel Borden *clap clap...clap clap clap*

    ReplyDelete
  25. Who has honestly gotten major pops in the last few months either than Bryan?

At least you give my mom credit for that info, unlike all the newz sitez that steal her newsbites and act like they have inside info.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Uh oh, using a guys real name will get ya heat in this place....

    ReplyDelete
  28. Big Show doing the YES gimmick...

    ReplyDelete
  29. A 3 way would have been better than what we got. Cena/Rock II was nothing more than the same match from the year before, just not as good.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I don't think he's fully committed to it. Kinda like HHH's current persona.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I was expecting this:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WTdTwcmxyo

    ReplyDelete
  32. As we all know, HHH was a big fan of Ric Flair, so it seems only natural that he'd turn on Sting. Hell, I think Flair should be ringside in their corner when it happens just so he can join in and turn on him once more for old time's sake.

Funny thing - for all the jokes we make about Flair turning on Sting, didn't it really only happen twice? And both of them led to pretty good angles....

    ReplyDelete
  33. These are all pretty awesome. In a vacuum, I like their Raw match better. Factoring in crowd, storyline, and significance, MITB is the easy call here.

    ReplyDelete
  34. He doesn't really have TNA stink on him, because nobody watched TNA. They were never high-profile enough to generate a truly horrible stench.

99% of the people watching are going to know him more from his WCW stuff than his TNA stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  35. True, Christian had TNA "stink" on him and came in and had ECW and World title runs....

    ReplyDelete
  36. Ugh, you'd have to be a jerk of Andre Roussimoff sized proportions to throw heat at a guy over that.

    ReplyDelete
  37. if you're the RSPW vet, you and JeffH were my favorite trolls

    ReplyDelete
  38. That's partially what I consider "tna stink." The fact that (a) he's no longer relevant bc he's been in tna for awhile and nobody has seen him (b) tna has taken any shine off of him for the few who have seen him

    ReplyDelete
  39. Wrestlers by and large refer to each other by their 'stage names'. They also use their stage names when giving kayfabe interviews, even long after they've retired. It's just one of those weird quirks that makes wrestling unique.

And because wrestlers use their 'stage name' all the time even in kayfabe situations, it just comes off as unbearably snarky when someone refers to a wrestler by their 'stage' name, especially if a guy has been using that name for most of their career.

There are a some exceptions - especially for a guy like Sean Waltham who has had multiple character names that were successful to a similar degree

    ReplyDelete
  40. Not sure what you mean here...

    ReplyDelete
  41. on the old RSPW newsgroup, there was a regular poster named Farva. Thought it may have been you.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I don't think any amount of working out is going to help his receding hairline...

    ReplyDelete
  43. Stranger in the AlpsJanuary 31, 2014 at 1:27 PM

Jerry Lawler once threw heat at Jim Harris in a classic Memphis moment. Look it up!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Ahhh. Gotcha. Not me.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Hulk Hogan once tried to throw heat at Jim Hellwig in a classic WCW moment. Id advise not looking it up...

    ReplyDelete
  46. Kurt Angle or Jeff Hardy could return to WWE tomorrow and be clear of any so called "TNA Stink"....

    ReplyDelete
  47. "Its a Man Called Sting...and he is in HD!!!"

    "Vintage Sting!"

    ReplyDelete
  48. Maybe loan him the Kane mask...

    ReplyDelete
  49. There's going to be a lot of heels, everyone turns on Sting.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Couldn't disagree more. If they went to wwe tomorrow they'd be half the draws they were when they left. Some of it is due to not being seen by alot of people, probably the majority actually, but some of it would also be for being in a secondary promotion for all those time. Just because people don't watch tna doesn't mean they don't know it's a 2nd tier organization

    ReplyDelete
  51. Stranger in the AlpsJanuary 31, 2014 at 1:42 PM

Jim Hellwig? Do you mean Warrior? Look it up!

    ReplyDelete
  52. ugh. this again?

    ReplyDelete
  53. Luger or Flair perhaps?

    ReplyDelete
  54. He would be getting his win back from WCW for when they were on top of the Monday Night Wars. He can retcon a DVD about how HHH traveled back in time and single-handedly won the MNWs for WWE

    ReplyDelete
  55. I suppose Sting would make an interesting avatar for Vince, if that HHH-Vince program is actually a thing. Vince reaches out to the one guy he has never employed and who has no history with McMahon (ala Hogan, Rock, Austin, HBK, etc)

    ReplyDelete
  56. don't need the Cena turn but the rest is gold.

    ReplyDelete
  57. OK, I'd support Sting as Authority Figure for this.

    ReplyDelete
  58. they could have still made a program out of that.

"I'm more of a successor to Curt Hennig than his own son ever was."

sounds like a good reason for a match to me.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Source: Terry Funk´s voicemail

    ReplyDelete
  60. on the other hand you would call Sting (the musician) Gordon Sumner or Elton John Reginald Dwight, would you?

(and a guy like Eminem wasn't refered to as Marshall Mathers until he made that name part of his pop star persona as well)

    ReplyDelete
  61. I dont agree because you look at Batista coming back in as a main eventer and he did pop a rating....

...at least those two have stayed in ring shape by wrestling in the minor leagues. Batista on the other hand is going to look like Scott Steiner at the Royal Rumble come WM time....

    ReplyDelete
  62. In HHH's mind, the DX skit where they attacked WCW was not only a real attack but the shot that took WCW down....

    ReplyDelete
  63. In that case, Id like Sting to lay down and say he would never help a McMahon....

...I could see the promo, "Vince, you took away my livelihood and I proved I would rather work for a glorified Indy promotion in a theme park than sell out to you..."

    ReplyDelete
  64. I actually think the best Punk-Morrison match was this non-title match from Smackdown when Punk was World champion in 2009:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFhFY6pnfHI

    ReplyDelete
  65. he could bring it if he needed to:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qe5NFcmex-w

    ReplyDelete
  66. three of the five top matches are against John Cena. these guys just have such an amazing chemistry.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Couldn't leave the weed discussions at home, huh?

    ReplyDelete
  68. ONE.....MORE.....COMMENT.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Clearly Punk is the guy who should be his "on-again, off-again rival", Orton is the guy they have unfortunately fed that role too

    ReplyDelete
  70. "All things aside, it was a pretty awesome moment when Simmons won the title."

It really was. Plus we get one of the greatest natural fan reactions of all time with the little black kid losing his mind in the crowd

    ReplyDelete
  71. Good time to sell your stock, Stephanie.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I completely disagree 100%.

Like PeteR3 below me said, Rude/Chono was a disaster. Watts literally told them to tank the match to not outshine the next 2 matches, so we get a horrible contest instead (a far cry from their classic in Japan right before that). Simmons/Barbarian is awful, a Worldwide main event at best. Sting/Roberts is just terrible. No chemistry and Jake just could not go at all

    ReplyDelete
  73. I'm curious if there are any RSPW leftovers on the BOD. I lurked for awhile there but it was after the heyday.

    ReplyDelete
  74. The black kid losing is shit during the three count is one of the greatest things ever.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Me: Still can't believe they never did a Hillbilly Jim/Roddy Piper program.

    ReplyDelete
  76. On a barely related note, Austin was talking about the Crucifiction angle on his postcast and how scary it was to be tied to that cross and raised up even though it was only like 30 feet. Funny, but that never even crossed my mind as dangerous until he was talking about it.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I call Mick Foley "Cactus" when I see him at comic cons, so I guess I'm guilty of that, too.

    ReplyDelete
  78. PLEASE STOP THE AUTHORITY FIGURE ANGLES. Good lord. You'd think Vince couldn't have survived the 80's since he didn't have one then. And of all the roles for Sting, GM is one he's least suited for.

    ReplyDelete
  79. The Rhodes Brothers jumping the Shield before a match.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Yeah, I would be freaked out by that...

...if im Stone Cold, Im thinking "What the hell am I doing up here, Im suppose to be a wrestler, not a stuntman..."

    ..Bret Hart nods in approval...

    ReplyDelete
  81. Is the RAW match the one where Punk busts out the piledriver, and Cena busts out the hurricanrana? If so, that one's probably my favorite.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Sting is not a great talker, and his best in ring years are well behind him. He also has the stink of two promotions that have both struggled or died with him at the top (not saying either was his fault, but he rode both ships down.)
Sting belongs in the HOF, but other than that he just isn't that big of a deal, and he would not do well in any sort of GM role.

    ReplyDelete
  83. He still has name value and his value to WWE will be for merchandise sales and possibly as an on air talent on WWE Network....

....I think he probably can be motivated to have one last run if booked and utilized correctly....

    ReplyDelete
  84. Batista and Michaels both had pretty awesome/unreal chemistry with Cena, too. Although weirdly not with each other; their matches against each other weren't BAD, but they weren't any better than normal Shawn vs. Big Guy matches against inferior workers like Sid or Nash.

Although the ones in 2008 both had pretty great finishes.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Never saw the Japan match with Rude/Chono. At the time all I had for WCW was Power Hour and whatever the one at midnight on Saturdays from the Toronto channel was called. I enjoyed the Barbarian/Simmons watch personally, of course I also enjoyed Boss Man/Bigelow from one of the Rumbles. It was a fun big man match, and Jake/Sting wasn't horrible, just crippled by a bad gimmick. I haven't seen the show since the original broadcast over 2 decades ago, but as a kid, I had fun with it. Hell, as a kid I thought the Chamber of Horrors match from the other Havoc show was hilariously fun to watch. If I watched it now it would probably be a different story.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I always dig Camel Clutch Blog lists.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Haha I mentioned that below. I remember that more than anything

    ReplyDelete
  88. I admit, I'm a huge fan of the Chamber of Horrors match

    ReplyDelete
  89. Hey Farva, was at the gym tonight and as I was in the middle of doing some light weights, "Cult of Personality" came on my iPhone. And I noticed, some guy I'd never seen before got a better weight machine than I did, so I decided to honor the moment and I said, "fuck it," and decided to quit halfway through my workout.

Thankfully, before I got to far out of e weight area, the theme to the original animated Transformers movie came on and I decided that there WAS hope for me yet and I went back.

Really glad I didn't quit there.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Still refuses to capitalize, making his posts appear unreadable and like they written by someone with little grasp of the English language

    ReplyDelete
  91. this.. bothers you too much.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Wow. No wonder I've been avoiding the blog since Punk-gate hit.

Is it evil of me to wish harm upon Punk and Bryan, just so that we can all grieve and then move on? Yeah, probably.

    ReplyDelete
  93. then I shall continue writing them

    ReplyDelete
  94. I remember that too. Hilarious and true.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Plus, he said in his RF Video shoot that it only made sense that a black wrestler was champion since black athletes were at the top of all other sports.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Haha. Do NOT poke the bear...

    ReplyDelete
  101. Genius. Thanks for tracking that down and sharing.

    ReplyDelete
  102. That's one problem with matches that are heavily scripted. Sometimes, things don't work as they are planned. And even though you think you scripted out this multilayered masterpiece, sometimes the fans aren't going to eat up everything you planned. Therefore, you kind of have to adjust. You have to do something different in order to win the fans back onto your side. That is why calling it in the ring is the best way to do a match. Sure, you can plan ahead some of the big spots and moments, but you have to be prepared to adjust accordingly. Due to tons of people being taught the WWE way - having the agents nearly layout your matches move-for-move - matches like Sheamus and Randy Orton are going to happen when fans rebel, as opposed to (earlier) Chris Benoit, Regal, and Finlay matches where the fans are chanting boring in the beginning of the match and then on the edge of their seats towards the end.

But as Scott alluded to, matches that have slow build to the crescendo generally have the crowd in the palm of its hands instead of the crowd being in control and dictating the pace of the match.

    ReplyDelete
  103. It's a fun little match... And how can you not love a match where a guy gets electrocuted and they shoot off fireworks at the end? I tell ya, they were dipping into that MGM budget for that show!

    ReplyDelete
  104. Ring wise it isn't better, but there were so many other factors that contributed to their money in the bank match being not only punks best WWE match, but one of the best matches in WWE history.

But yeah that Raw match continues to be my 2013 moty.

    ReplyDelete
  105. .....

  106. Classic or Clusterfuck

    Ron Simmons vs Ricky Steamboat]

...oh wait, that one actually did happen.

    http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xdhum6_ricky-steamboat-vs-ron-simmons_sport

    ReplyDelete
  107. Absolutely - their chemistry is right up there with Shawn/Taker and Flair/Steamboat.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Totally agreed. Unfortunately, the best counterpoint to both Cena (the hard-working, free-thinking guy) and Punk (the dirty-looking, anti-authority guy) is Orton.

As boring as Orton is, his entire persona really fits in best from a story-line standpoint.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Morrison had an AMAZING run of matches in 2009 - Punk, Rey, Jeff... seriously, everyone should go out and buy Morrison's DVD, it's fantastic.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Same here. Punk absolutely deserved to be in the main-event, whether it was against Rock/Cena or Taker.

    ReplyDelete
  111. And I think he was much better with the Legend Killer Gimmick. His Viper thing sucks. He is no Jake Roberts. And he has no DDT.
