Well you knew this would happen.

  3. Maybe I'm too optimistic, but I think tossing the word "quit" around regarding the CM Punk situation isn't accurate. Based on what we've heard, it seems like Punk decided to "go home" because of a combination of being banged up (anyone who saw the Rumble can tell you Punk was nowhere near 100%) and general dissatisfaction with the way he's been booked.

Though there hasn't been live TV since the news broke, WWE wasn't shy about immediately burying Austin when he walked out in 2002. Nor did WWE hesitate to put one of its token "future endeavors" announcements when Kurt Angle asked for an early release, and we haven't seen anything regarding that from WWE. Punk hasn't said squat publicly, and really the only public hostile move has been WWE unfollowing Punk on Twitter, which isn't exactly the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand in terms of kicking off a war. The old vindictive Vince would've spent at least a half hour of Monday's Raw burying Punk and had a "Phil Brooks" future endeavors notice on WWE.com before lunchtime on Tuesday.

Frankly, I don't believe the "Punk doesn't want to face Triple H at Mania" rumors because that match has been setting up for weeks now and he had plenty of time to object to that before. Instead, I think that since it became apparent that Bryan was probably going to end up facing Triple H instead and Punk would end up in some kind of stupid match with Kane (instead of keeping Punk vs. Triple H and adding Bryan to the Orton/Batista main event).

Essentially the way I see it was Punk telling Vince, "If that is what you have planned for me for Mania or if you're creative team is so dense it doesn't even know what to do with me, I'm going to take Mania off to heal up. Call me when you have a clue." Still, obnoxious, but far from "quitting." Of course, if I did that at my job I'd be fired, but I'm not my company's #2 star who also sells a huge amount of merchandise (but I'm at least #4, I think).

I don't know if this means he'll ever be back, but I have yet to see anything that really indicates Punk flat-out quit (notice Meltzer is using the word "hiatus"). Let's be honest, people have done much worse to Vince (Triple H's buddy Shawn, for instance) and have been welcomed back with open arms.

  4. If he's dealing with concussion issues, I think it's ultimately a smart play for him to walk away. I think it was Farva (but can't recall exactly) who said he wasn't even trying during the Rumble, but as the Masked Man pointed out at Grantland, he was dealing with something during the match.

  8. It's all going to hype the EC PPV. But then it'll just be Chris Jericho returning in the ultimate trolled work. Although it be better if they hyped up a mystery final entrant into EC, giving all kinds of hints to Punk. But then the reveal at the actual
PPV ends up being Rey Mysterio again.

    ReplyDelete
  9. As more news trickles out (depending on its validity), this seems more and more like Punk legit walking out due to creative. If the recent report is to be believed, and he actually said that facing Triple H "wasn't a big enough or worthy match for the biggest show of the year", then it makes sense. Especially considering Triple H's rumored comments regarding Daniel Bryan "not being worthy" of a match with him in New Orleans.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Right. Knowing what we know about Triple H, he would have happily done a similar promo on Monday running down Punk in his most serious "THIS BUSINESS" voice.

...Or at least texted Nash to come and do it.

  15. Yeah, and he also hasn't said anything publicly, which is way less than a lot of exiting guys do. He'll be back once he's all healed up and missing the spotlight.

  19. Amazing. I think we have ran out of DBry/CMPunk topics to talk about. Never thought I'd see the day.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Actually, I think the reason they haven't acknowledged Punk's absence is because they don't want to give him the attention.

    ReplyDelete

  24. I still love Triple H touting the "Austin took his ball and went home" line constantly in interviews, and Austin replied in that article with "yeah, I took the ratings with me too, because you sure aren't doing anything to make them go up."

(paraphrased pretty much, but his point was Triple H was worried so much about everything but making the show better)

  33. Eh, I'm Punk biased but short of being Punk, Vince, or HHH, I'd have trouble saying petulant child at this point because who knows what exactly is going on other than the snippets being leaked to the dirt sheets.

If he has any type of creative clause in his contract ala Bret or Hogan and they kept pitching him shit he didn't like, no problem with him walking out.

If he's injured physically or mentally and his next step was telling Chavo to check his dogs, no problem with him walking out.

If he's sick of creative and tired of watching people get over and crapped on for it (him at first, ryder, bryan, Ziggs), no problem with him walking out

Honestly if he's just pissed they've dicked around Colt for the past 5 years and we have the NAO as tag team champs, Waltman on contract (that's a thing, no? Agent or something or just a legends deal?), and Nash getting one off spots whenever the mood strikes him, no problem with him walking out.

  47. Only thing I remember about Hughes was from Mick Foley's first book, where he told the story of how Hughes botched a finish and caused DDP to lose in his hometown when he was booked to win, then went to the bar where DDP was treating and drank the beer that Page was paying for.

  49. If he was going to be walking in July anyway, if anything hhh was way too important a match.

    ReplyDelete
  50. There is no right or wrong. There is only funny or not funny.

    That was not funny.

    ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  51. Nothing except leech 90% of his heat away to HHH and Co., stall him out as the "rebel babyface" taking on the Corporation, and totally put Hunter in a better position than Punk afterwards. Can you imagine Vince McMahon doing that to "red-hot, rebel babyface" Steve Austin at ANY point in their feud, let alone when Austin was at his hottest? I thought not.

Really, that match, the clusterfuck finish, and everything that followed in its wake were just DEATH on the "rebel babyface" Punk. He needed a heel turn and Heyman to revive him, is how badly it hurt him.

    ReplyDelete
  52. What I remember of Curtis Hughes

-Had a shoot fight against Shamrock on Raw back in '99. Remember the one where Jericho was trying to break them up.

-New Jack speaks of him in glowing terms.

-Allegedly fired for visiting a very adult bar.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Where does the story go from there? It goes the same place that Austin v. McMahon went. Just because Punk "won the battle" doesn't mean he "won the war". Austin got the better of Vince, and Vince got the better of Austin (98% of the time through shenanigans but still)...but they kept the feud going. The main problem is that Hunter is allergic to "showing ass" or looking at ALL weak against ANYONE that's not in his clique. He wants to play the Vince McMahon role, but he doesn't want to BE Vince McMahon, cowardly owner and corporate asshat. He wants to be the Almighty H, Destroyer of ALL....and that just doesn't work in the Vince McMahon role. It doesn't.

    ReplyDelete
  54. How so? Punk is/was one of their biggest stars - who else should have wrestled HHH other than perhaps Bryan?

By that logic, Rock or Brock shouldn't have wrestled any comeback matches as they were always gone shortly after.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Please tell me you're not trying to compare punk to either rock or Brock.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Why did this get downvoted? It's a legit possibility, after the reactions at the Rumble. Reigns has "breakout star" written all over him.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Obviously he's not as big a star as either but he is/was in the top 3 full-time stars on the WWE roster, so to argue that his upcoming contract expiry negated any point of making bank on him with a big feud in the meantime seems to contradict arguments that work in favour of Brock and Rock.

    ReplyDelete
  58. You can't make the same arguments for punk as you do for rock and Brock.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Why? Money is money, regardless of the amount. If HHH/Punk is the biggest match they can think of for HHH, why not do it while Punk is around to earn them cash?

    ReplyDelete
  60. Because punk isn't 1/10 the draw that either of them are. Wm will do no more buys with him than without him.

    ReplyDelete
  61. That was the funniest thing I've seen I'm a long time. Bravo

    ReplyDelete
  62. Was that the time Rock randomly showed up at RAW after he quit? Cause I was at that RAW live and bah gawd almighty, that was the loudest crowd reaction I've ever been apart of.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Bricks would be shat. And thrown through TVs.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Well, nobody on the current roster bar Cena is 1/10 the draw of those two. Should nobody else have matches?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Yeah HISHE is good too!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Was punk not scheduled to have a match?

    ReplyDelete
  67. Me neither, but I'm on board with that.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Your_Favourite_LoserJanuary 30, 2014 at 5:50 PM

he talks about how he's subscribed to the wwe network, but no one can subscribe to it yet

so, i'm inclined to say this is fake

    ReplyDelete
  69. Que? Your original point was that he shouldn't have a high-profile match due to his upcoming departure. I said, as one of their top stars, it makes sense to make money off him while he's still around. You're now saying numbers won't be affected by his presence or non-presence so I guess it comes down to you just thinking Punk isn't a draw at all. If that's your argument, then literally only Cena is a draw from the full-time roster and it's pointless advertising marquee matches that involve anyone other than him or the part-time brigade. Is that correct? If so, why would it matter who wrestled HHH, since he's the one drawing?

    ReplyDelete

  72. Your_Favourite_LoserJanuary 30, 2014 at 5:52 PM

'thats one feather in his hat.'

well, he DID wear a fedora...

    ReplyDelete
  73. Oy vey. First, he was supposed to have a match. With Hunter. Which is a very high profile spot even if he doesn't think so. Second, he's not a draw at all, so there's no need to cater to his demands as he adds no buys to wm there or not. Third, he's leaving in July, no it makes no sense to build him up for anything. Why would the wwe cave and upset their whole plan because he's all butthurt 3 months before he's fucking off anyway?

    ReplyDelete
  74. So if he has no market value why does Vince reportedly want him back? Why whould HHH agree to have one of his now rare matches with him, let alone at Wrestlemania? Who else, other than perhaps Bryan, could they put in that position and expect to draw in any way? If the answer is "no-one", why does it matter?

"Third, he's leaving in July, no it makes no sense to build him up for anything." is what I originally picked up on. You can make this argument for any part-timer. Yes, Rock and Brock will bring in more revenue, obviously, but I'd argue HHH/Punk as a WM Main Event (one of them, anyway) would garner more buys than HHH/Ziggler or HHH/Sheamus or Cena/Wyatt or even Batista/Orton at this stage. In which case, why not use Punk for that match while you can?

    ReplyDelete
  75. Uh what? The HHH match is the one he's refusing to do. He's insisting on a match with people that already have matches. Are you confused?

    ReplyDelete
  76. I think you're confused.

"If he was going to be walking in July anyway, if anything hhh was way too important a match."

That's what you said. And I said that you may as well use Punk for that match while you could.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Again, he's refusing to do that match.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Which has what to do with your original point, exactly?

    ReplyDelete
  79. The point that it makes no sense to cave to his demands?

    ReplyDelete
  80. No, your original post that I responded to:

"If he was going to be walking in July anyway, if anything hhh was way too important a match."

    Why?

    ReplyDelete
  81. I'm bored with repeating myself. You're right, they should put him over taker, Brock and rock and it would be the biggest wm of all time. Seriously, his stardom dwarfs both austin and hulkamania combined.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Haha, so you're refusing to defend your original point while inventing a straw-man argument to babble against. I was just asking you to back up your argument of why HHH was too big a match for him, just once. Preferably with an alternative match that would replace it. It's really not hard.

    ReplyDelete
  83. They could put Kofi in the match and it wouldn't affect the buyrate. They could have Kofi wrestle Cesaro and it wouldn't affect the buyrate. Because punk doesn't move the needle for wm at all. Now if they actually had someone to put with Hunter that could draw, it would be something. But Batista and Cena and Brock and Taker and DB are busy.

    ReplyDelete
  84. And I pretty much agree with that. Which brings me back to the original point, if the match is meaningless, then why, according to you, was it way too important a match for Punk to be wrestling? If by your own words it's a meaningless-to-buyrates match and there was no-one else for HHH to wrestle that would actually draw?

    ReplyDelete
  85. She ain't bad.

I find myself wondering if he's seeing this as his Blazing Saddles...without the racial overtones.

    ReplyDelete
  86. He's fucking Hitler. He'd find a way.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I really enjoy HISHE. However, to say that "any moron" can write dialogue is not correct. Writing is not as easy as many people seem to think.

    Sincerely,

    WWE Creative.

    ReplyDelete
  88. You actually: 1. Got Dougie to argue and flustered him. 2. Painted him into a corner, effectively shutting him up.

    ReplyDelete
  89. I'd think more people would pay to see CM Punk than they would Triple H.

  90. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryJanuary 30, 2014 at 8:19 PM

No. Even with the added filler (which I can helpfully use as food or bathroom breaks, or jsut for the room of friends to get unglued from the TV for a moment), I much prefer the current PPV format of less matches with more time; it makes each match feel more important than a slapdash 5 minute eight-man tag like we got with the Corrrrrrrrrrrrrrrre a few years ago.

  92. Hughes was a fairly impressive big man worker before he settled into the body guard gimmick. As the Big Cat I remember he used to do a rope walk splash in the AWA, which is quite the visual coming from a 300 pound man. It seemed as though he sacrificed all his mobility and agility to wrestle in a suit. I don't remember any memorable Mr. Hughes matches, but the Big Cat had a fair amount of go in him.
