Mailbag Roundup!

OK, rather than a bunch of smaller posts, let’s hit a few topics in quick bursts here.

Hey Scott,

I have a couple of quickfire questions for you regarding the Undertaker.

1. How long, realistically, does the streak have left as a saleable gimmick? Is it really until it's broken, or do you think it's shorter than that?

2. Isn't just seeing Taker enough to put some butts in seats?

3. If Taker retired today would it affect the buyrate of Wrestlemania?

4. If Taker says that he wants to wrestle DBry, does that mean it'll most likely happen?

6. Does anyone really believe that Cena is the credible threat to the streak? Why would he possibly need it?

5. Finally, I've still never heard a very well thought out answer to why Cena vs. Taker would be the best thing since sliced bread/set in stone/etc. Don't we all hate Cena or something? (With the caveat of we all say that personally he's a great guy, but 10 years and blah blah blah.

1.  Until it’s broken.

2.  Yes, but not as many butts.

3.  The Network is gonna have a bigger effect, I think.

4.  Nope.

5.  That’s what he does, rise above the Streak.

6.  Because it would be a good match that he haven’t already seen a million times and would feel like a legitimate Wrestlemania main event.

Every year it seems like you get surprise guest entrants -- either new hires or (more than ever these days) old veterans returning for one last shot. Who are the wrestlers you'd like to see make a surprise return... and who are those you don't want to see?

They pretty much have to bring out Jake this year.  I’d also really like to see JoMo back again because he’s a fresh face who they could push to the moon and would work as either a flashy babyface or a super-corporate heel like the Miz.

Scott,

I was thinking the other night how for the first time in several years we have a wide selection of superstars who could conceivably main evetn Wrestlemania, not only from their position on the card at the moment and storylines but also with crowd reactions.

We could see any combination of five guys in Randy Orton, John Cena, Brock Lesnar, Batista & Daniel Bryan. We also have CM Punk whose battle with HHH/Authority could envelope the title, Undertaker returning and Sheamus also coming in shortly.

Bear in mind in previous years there's only been 2-3 decent guys at the top of the card, do you agree the main event scene is currently stronger than it has been for years?

No, because none of these guys are drawing money.

2 quick questions Scott
So word is Batista's return Monday night was a huge ratings success. Question is, how long before the bloom fades and he is just another guy on the roster??
And do u see any scenario where the fans turn on him???

Like if he posts an obviously trolling tweet and then deletes it right away?   Who knows, though, fans are fickle beasts.  Probably it’s more likely he tears another tricep first anyway.

Hi, Scott,

Here's one for the blog and for you.

I've been a supporter of TNA since the first weekly PPV. I've been there through the ups and downs, have argued for them, and given up on them on several occasions. After the stellar late-2011/early-2012 they had, I'd hoped they'd turned the corner. Unfortunately, since then they've just proven how out of touch they are, and I've finally given up on them for good -- it just doesn't seem that they're ever going to learn their lesson, and they've had long enough that I can no longer say "oh, but they're only X years old!". I actually have to force myself not to argue for them, simply because it's force of habit now.

So here's the question.

With longtime fans such as myself calling it quits (and I've got to assume I'm not the only one), is TNA salvageable any more? Or, is their name so damaged, so associated with stupidity and failure, that if they fix all of their idiotic booking decisions (they won't, but let's assume that they could) they still couldn't come out of the tailspin they currently appear to be in?

Their fate rests entirely on SpikeTV continuing to pay them TV rights fees for Impact.  If Spike is successful in getting WWE, TNA is dead and there’s no saving them.  If not, they’ll likely continue propping up Dixie forever.

Just in case you had any shortage of WWE Network questions… Just wanted to get your thoughts on the Network’s potential impact on the current product’s continuity. With the average WWE fan able to access years of shows at their fingertips, do you think that creative will have to take that into account? It was one thing when just the internet nerds were calling them out for lazy storytelling, but now more casual fans may notice. “Hey, why is Punk now friends with Mysterio after I watched them have a blood feud a few years ago?” Or do you think I’m hoping against hope and that the Network won’t have any impact there?

The average casual fan is just gonna be watching the Network for the PPVs and maybe RAW.  It’s only us hardcore nerds that are gonna be going back and watching old PPVs with notebook and stopwatch in hand, so I wouldn’t think it’ll have any more effect than before.  Not to mention the current writers can’t even keep track of continuity from last week as it is anyway.

Comments

  1. As far as surprise Rumble entrants, I like the idea of giving some NXT guys that opportunity. Of course Bo Dallas or Alexander Rusev won't pop the live crowd like Roddy Piper or Rikishi, but it seems like a good way to debut a new guy, or give a sneak-peek to a guy who's close to moving up to the main roster, and/or give some fans who aren't watching NXT a reason to be curious and tune into NXT.
On the other hand, since it's customary for a debuting wrestler on the main roster to win his first match and generally look good while doing it, would it be bad business to "job" an NXT guy in the Rumble?

    ReplyDelete
  2. Bo Dallas won a spot in the Rumble last year, threw out Wade Barrett, had like a two week feud with him on RAW, then disappeared back to NXT.

    ReplyDelete
  3. I don't watch NXT, but it would've been fun for them to run a tournament with the winner getting a Rumble berth. The USWA did that in 1996 and that's why Doug Gilbert got in.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I have a question about surprise rumble entrants that comes from a gut feeling I've been having over the last couple of days. Do TNA do no-compete clauses? Because they don't seem like the kind of company that'd be smart enough to, and this year's rumble is in Pittsburgh......

I'm sure I'm being fanciful/unrealistic/whatever, but like I say, I've just been having this gut feeling recently....

    ReplyDelete
  5. 5. Finally, I've still never heard a very well thought out answer to why Cena vs. Taker would be the best thing since sliced bread/set in stone/etc. Don't we all hate Cena or something? (With the caveat of we all say that personally he's a great guy, but 10 years and blah blah blah.

::steps to the mic amd clears throat::

You obviously don't read OfficerFarvas obsessive posts on this. I can't reach everyone I guess. They are the 2 biggest draws WWE has, especially at WM. They haven't interacted in what, 10-11 years? That alone would make it the clear cut WM match, but add in the fact that Cena is the only guy casual fans would think has ANY chance to end the streak, and it's an easy record breaking headliner. Hell, even smart fans would get sucked in. Look at how many Cena turns heel and ends the streak scenarios get tossed around this place.

    ReplyDelete
  6. No way it'll happen but I'd shit my pants if they had El Generico come out during the rumble. I love Sami Zayn but I still think they're leaving money on the table by not doing anything with the Generico gimmick. We'll see Sheamus for sure, hopefully Jake. JoMo would be fun for a cool elimination spot, but he's not a guy I'd be super excited to see. Never saw much in him personally.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I'd LOVE to see Scott Hall get a spot. I'm really rooting for him to get his shit together

    ReplyDelete
  8. The money they could make on selling masks is the real loss.

    ReplyDelete
  9. But let him use the BRRRAAIIINNNNBUSSTAHHHHH!

    ReplyDelete
  10. That'd be funny if Gunn, Road Dogg, Waltman, Nash and Hall were all in the Rumble.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Call me crazy, but does anyone think there's a chance we see Cabana as a surprise entrant on Sunday? He said on his podcast a few months ago he was coming back to do something with wwe in January. Maybe Punk is in there with all three Shield members and Cabana's the next entrant and cleans house with Punk. Not likely but it'd be awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I think he was trying out as an announcer for awhile.

    ReplyDelete
  13. He can be the perfect comedy/badass face, also bring Steen,I wanna see more of them fighting.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Damn you to hell for saying this. Now I'll be disappointed if it doesn't happen. I'm not even a huge Cabana fan but that scenario you laid out would be great. Not sure how many people would recognize him tho at the live crowd

    ReplyDelete
  15. That would be awesome; I've heard his hip has pretty much killed any thought of him wrestling again, but DAMN just one more time.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Yea. Just a quick minute kick punch spot that kinda just symbolizes his recent success in being sober.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Aiden English. I want something quick and memorable.

    ReplyDelete
  18. This is like when everyone pointed out that the shield had never attacked Cena and maybe they'd interfere in Cena/Rock on Cena's behalf and I was super bummed when it didn't happen.

    ReplyDelete
  19. On Sunday, I wanna see Jake #1 and DDP #2, with Jake eliminating DDP via DDT then over the top. Then Hogan #3 and Sid #4. And Jake manages to dump Sid only for Sid to pull Hogan out via handshake. Steamboat #5 to put Jake out then Jericho #6 to take out Steamboat.

    Then start proper.

    ReplyDelete
  20. If Jericho doesn't show up I'll be shocked.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Then Savage at #7, and Benoit at #8

    ReplyDelete
  22. Almost every company that actually contracts has those clauses.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yeah, he said he went to their compound and tried out and that he was coming back for something in January. Right when he said that, the first thing I thought of was the rumble.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Or...maybe they knew the Network thing was happening that far in advance? I could totally see Colt hosting one of the comedy shows.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yeah, seeing Bruno, Shane Douglas or Larry Zbyszko in the Rumble would be pretty awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  26. The smart fans would probably be the MOST drawn in because we're the most fearful of Cena being the guy to finally break it. Those false finishes would drive the live thread OUT OF THEIR MINDS.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Or Johnny Valiant.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Very true. A small part of me just wants Taker to say fuck it and lay down for someone like Hogan or HHH at WM just so the internet will explode.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yeah! Wheel 'em out. Barry Horowitz at #9 and Bob Cook at #10

    ReplyDelete
  30. One of the announcers would be like, "Hey, it's Scotty Goldman!"

    ReplyDelete
  31. All the deceased Von Erichs or GTFO

    ReplyDelete
  32. Great, now I want to see that.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yeah I don't know, sobriety is a very fickle thing for some of these people. If Hall got a Rumble spot every time he'd "gotten sober" he would've been in the 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2012 Rumbles as well.

    ReplyDelete
  34. 11-14, with Mike coming out at #15?

    ReplyDelete
  35. How do you keep getting banned? This was like twice today.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Life is a very fragile thing.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Stanislaus Zbyszko!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I am going to have this Rumble in Booking Revolution, and report back.

    ReplyDelete
  39. You obviously have the ability to stir up trouble with the higher ups it seems.

    ReplyDelete
  40. True. I might be naive but im optimistic this is the time that sticks for him. Or he takes his appearance fee and goes on a bender, his track record doesnt bode well for this tho

    ReplyDelete
  41. Have HHH hit the pedigree and pin him after 10 minutes. That'd be awesome just for the reactions.

    ReplyDelete
  42. The Higher Up, the other mods appear not to care as long as I'm adding to the conversation.

The cool thing is though, now I know exactly when Scott takes his breaks at work. That's something!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I'm mostly worried about Jake, and not even for Jake's sake but Page's.

    ReplyDelete
  44. You've been Chan, Rant, and Spam. What's next?

    ReplyDelete
  45. I haven't even started messing with the last 5 letters, we'll let it play out and see where it goes.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Somehow with the exception of maybe Jake, I don't think we're going to see any of this come Sunday. I expect we're going to see some Roster-barrel-scraping instead!

    ReplyDelete
  47. If you havent tried FANDANGO yet you are failing

    ReplyDelete
  48. What story telling.

    ReplyDelete
  49. That's where it started, that was the last thing I ever did here, pimp the shit out of Curtis for being awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  50. It's right there, I know.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I think the "overall" talent level will be okayish, no 100% jobbers whatsoever... but other than Punk and Batista the difference between the "top" and "bottom" will be quite thin.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I remember that one, I think it was around the time I began posting.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Is this his cycle? He just keeps creating new accounts until each one gets ban?

    ReplyDelete
  54. MAIN EVENT SLEEPER OF DOOM!

    ReplyDelete
  55. My preference would be the big hoot by hogan but I could live with that also

    ReplyDelete
  56. 28 warm bodies indeed. Given that the result is such a foregone conclusion, the entertainment comes more from surprise entrants, it's kind of a shame that they don't do more of those really....

    ReplyDelete
  57. I guess? I never really knew him before he was gone.

    ReplyDelete
  58. That would be about right. Disqus doesn't demand actual e-mail addresses, god bless them.

Make a post, big red bar comes up saying you're not allowed to post, click one button in Chrome, unbanned!

    ReplyDelete
  59. "Like if he posts an obviously trolling tweet and then deletes it right
away? Who knows, though, fans are fickle beasts. Probably it’s more
likely he tears another tricep first anyway."

Huh, wonder where all that negative smarks can eat my balls stuff comes from?

    ReplyDelete
  60. Interesting....well, show up to the Impact thread tonight, can't wait to see your 50 name changes. Should be fun.

    ReplyDelete
  61. You can help raise the thread count.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I only sleep on silk but sure.

    ReplyDelete
  63. It'll be interesting to see when your post get deleted, and people will think I got in a strange flame war with you or something.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I keep saying this but I get no answer. TNA have sold Impact to over 20 countries, fine they don't do as well in the U.S but surely they have to be doing pretty decently since its basically multiple revenues for one show.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Seriously, my great conversation with Worst_In_The_World this morning now looks like I tried to brutalize the guy or something. Couldn't have been more cordial.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Yeah, it fooled me into thinking something big happened with you two.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Which, in a completely hilarious way, is even better than the posts being left up!

    It's a great blog.

    ReplyDelete
  68. There is never a dull moment here in my eyes.

    ReplyDelete
  69. *every poster does their best Lawler impression*

    ReplyDelete
  70. Is that through Spike though? Like...could Spike buy the rights to Impact for X dollars, then turn around and make contracts for those rights in Malaysia or whatever and not have to give TNA a dime?

I have a pretty good handle on how television revenue works until we get outside of the country then I'm totally lost.

    ReplyDelete
  71. *every smart fan does their (insert wrestler who committed suicide) impression*

    ReplyDelete
  72. When was the last suicide (not drug related) anyway? Actually now that I think about it...has there ever been a real suicide? Like shotgun to the face suicide not pills and booze.

I feel like a Von Erich blasted himself but can't remember.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I always get the Von Erichs confused but I think 3 of them killed themselves. Benoit obviously. Think Crash Holly also. Im sure im forgetting a few

    ReplyDelete
  74. Your_Favourite_LoserJanuary 23, 2014 at 4:44 PM

'4. If Taker says that he wants to wrestle DBry, does that mean it'll most likely happen?'

what if taker refuses to work the show unless it's with dbry?

    ReplyDelete
  75. Takers WAY to loyal to Vince to make that political play

    ReplyDelete
  76. Theyre getting compensated in spicy curry, croissants, and scones tho.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Power_of_Hogans_HOF_RingJanuary 23, 2014 at 5:00 PM

The Higher Up was me, Rantdango! It was me all along!

    ReplyDelete
  78. Stranger in the AlpsJanuary 23, 2014 at 5:00 PM

This mystery investor angle in TNA? I haven't even been watching and I already know that it's going to be Vince buying them out.

    ReplyDelete
  79. More than that, doesn't he kinda need to work Wrestlemania to get his big payday? Not like he works any other dates.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Not if he wants to make money, he won't.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Nitpicky point of order; they had a PPV tag match against each other in 2007, with Taker/Batista vs. Cena/Shawn. It was pretty good, too.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Yeah, but who knows anything about Colt Cabana and his relationship with Punk, outside of a small handful of smarks?

    ReplyDelete
  83. I think we'd see "The Self Destruction of Hunter Hearst Helmsley" before we even sniff "The Self Destruction of Mark Calloway."

    ReplyDelete
  84. It's the single biggest "dream match" they have left. Simple as that.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Yes. That intro alone would get a reaction. Start a throw-away feud (or even a tag team?) with Fandango just to get him on TV.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Yea. Plus I think hes just super loyal to vince. Taker seems like a good dude when it comes to putting guys over and being objective about business but I dont thinkmits worth the 500k orwhatever he makes at mania to white knight for a guy who ks doing pretty well already

    ReplyDelete
  87. Feels good to correcf OfficerFarva, doesnt it?

Yea, I remember that now that you say it. That was the ppv batosta turned on tLer iirc. Good match

    ReplyDelete
  88. The question here is WHY they're watching Impact, though. If they're watching to see people like Hogan -- well, he's gone, and how long can they keep those contracts if they're watching for that reason? (Remember, I don't think that other countries had Hogan over-exposed to the point we did in the US. Of course, this is from a total guess, so don't quote me on it.)

If they're watching because they truly like Impact, then you're right, from a financial perspective, maybe they'll be fine.

However, how much talent is going to go away if TNA loses Spike and can't get placed somewhere else?

Given their reputation, people from the indies are generally going to them for one thing -- to be on TV and collect a paycheck. They certainly aren't going there because TNA is the greatest place in the universe... you just need to watch some ROH and PWG shows to see that.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Shane McMahon. A real life invasion angle!

    ReplyDelete
  90. He's worth $15 million. What's another million?

    ReplyDelete
  91. If they wanted to own the company, sure. Do they?

    ReplyDelete
  92. Ax, then Hawk. Smash, then Animal.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Taker is obviously a capable politician to have lasted this long, and I'm sure that whatever he wants to do factors heavily, but why would he make a hard line power play like that? He's just THAT big of a DBry fan?
I think if Taker got hard to work with, he'd be respectfully phased out. WM will live on past the streak, and I imagine that he likes his big payday.

    ReplyDelete
  94. This is the start of a new threakjack series Classic or Clusterfuck. I'll name a dream match that never happened, and you name which you think the match would have been.

    Ultimate Warrior vs Jeff Hardy

    ReplyDelete
  95. They were also teammates in a forgettable Raw match that ended with Undertaker tombstoning Cena. But Farva's point still stands, they haven't had a one-on-one match since 2003. 11 YEARS!!!! BOOK THIS SHIT!!!

    ReplyDelete
  96. That would be pretty clusterfuckish.

    ReplyDelete
  97. After Chandangbro there's nowhere to go but down, sadly.

    ReplyDelete
  98. I suspect if we see Jake we'll also see DDP.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Why would HHH ending the steak cause us to fuck 14 year olds?

    ReplyDelete
  100. This is going to be the BoDs slogan until WM

    ReplyDelete
  101. Vince would give him the match out of respect, but it's pointless to talk about because you don't get to be as respected as Taker by pulling bullshit power plays like that.

    ReplyDelete
  102. They did that last year and Bo Dallas got in.

    ReplyDelete
  103. By all accounts, Taker lives a pretty spartan and comfortable lifestyle on a ranch down in Texas. I don't think he needs another payday. Ever.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Why would Taker refuse a WrestleMania payout over Daniel Bryan?

    You guys are ridiculous. lol

    ReplyDelete
  105. Good point. I think the Taker is so selfless narrative is overblown at this point. Sure, hes not HBK 97 but you dont hang around this long wo looking out for yourself #1. He bitched about putting over brock in 03 iirc.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Depends on the pre-match "warm-up". If they share drugs nicely, potential classic. If not, ugly clusterfuck.

    ReplyDelete
  107. I think almost all of us here realize that's about as likely to happen as Loser bedding the entire Knockouts roster by the end of this month.

    ;)

    ReplyDelete
  108. It's pretty fun watching people bend their minds into pretzels coming up with ideas for how Daniel Bryan can get his BIG WM MOMENT.

Because, you know, the day after WM30, he's getting executed with two to the some or fired into the sun or something. This is his LAST CHANCE for some reason.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Has this been mentioned yet? Anyone remember Undertaker teaming with Cena and then tombstoning him right after the match? That was such a tease for Mania

    ReplyDelete
  110. He's what, 45? Maybe he's not quite ready to start drawing that 15 million down just yet.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Your_Favorite_Loser = "you guys"?

    ReplyDelete
  112. Clusterfuck. Two minutes in the mat is so covered in grease paint that they both slip and injure themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  113. "I'm marking out, bro!"

    ReplyDelete
  114. With a broken freakin' neck! Are we being too vague as to who we think it is?

    ReplyDelete
  115. Your_Favourite_LoserJanuary 23, 2014 at 5:59 PM

and i was just asking for the hell of it, for conversation

    ReplyDelete
  116. That was in MSG was it not?

    ReplyDelete
  117. For you. 99% of the audience in attendance would be like "who the fuck is that guy?"

    ReplyDelete
  118. I'm still baffled by MVP signing on for this. Either TNA offered him an absurd amount of money they don't have or he really misses living and working in the US.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Okay, Bad News Barrett, calm down. It's just a guy throwing out a hypothetical and, ya know, being a fan.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Pretty sure that Kerry blasted his face off, but I'm not looking it up.
He was always the dramatic von Erich.
Also Mike Awesome and Mike Graham.

    ReplyDelete
  121. 48, turns 49 nearly two weeks prior to Mania.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Might have been one of those RAW in MSG. I think Taker ended up facing HBK at Mania 26. Might have faced Batista and Kane

    ReplyDelete
  123. 6. Does anyone really believe that Cena is the credible threat to the streak? Why would he possibly need it?

Did anyone think Cena was going to beat Lesnar at ER? Did he need that win?

    Nope, but he did it.

Did anyone think Cena would basically end the Shield's streak in a handicap match? Did he need that win?

    Nope, but he did it.

Did anyone think he was going to beat the Rock in the Rock's hometown? Did he need that win?

Nope, but he damn near got it.

    That's what he does.

The intrigue in matches like Cena/Taker is not in "does he need this" or "can they make him winning worth it?"

It's in wondering how far the WWE will go in an attempt to "legitimize" Cena and snuff out those goddamned doubters who keep booing him.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Yeah, I need to go lay down after typing that sentence. Got a little worked up and lost my composure. Whew.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Shot himself through the heart, on his father's ranch.

Mike Awesome was in 2007... yeah, he might be the most recent.

    ReplyDelete
  126. The promos would be a classic. Warrior screaming about power from the heavens and the smell of combat, while Jeff looks at him dumb-founded.

    The match? Clusterfuck.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Someone made a great point below. Smart fans woukd end up being the mose invested in the match. Their fear of Cena being the one to end the streak woukd add so much drama to the smart fanbase. The casuals would buy into him being a threat just because its Cena. Would be great drama all the way around

    ReplyDelete
  128. Let's just put D-Bry-Taker on the back burner and get to the kissing contest between their significant others that we'd rather see anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Taker upgraded again? Damn.

    ReplyDelete
  130. You guys ask too many questions.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Me stupid. Mike Graham's the most recent, if we're counting him.

(Awesome was still working before his bad day. Graham was doing bad shoots with whoever would pay him the most.)

    ReplyDelete
  132. That question about continuity as it pertains to the network is so... Odd.

Like, I get it, but really, isn't two guys trying to kill each other in June and doing six man tags together by December one of those things that's just accepted and overlooked for the logistical absurdity?

Even in the golden days of Chris Kreski, guys that tried to strangle, blind, castrate, etc. each other would end up teaming up down the road. They wouldn't be BFF tag partners, but they'd move on and forget the past.

They have to or the whole thing falls apart. If no wrestler ever agreed to team up with a guy who wronged him in the past, wrestling would have died in the 50s.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Hey, it's better than just flaming each other ad nauseam.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Stranger in the AlpsJanuary 23, 2014 at 6:15 PM

No way Warrior sells for that queer, Jeff Hardy. Clusterfuck!

  137. Yeah, of all the Taker matches left in the WWE, Cena is one of the most intriguing.

    ReplyDelete
  138. I'd be all for Taker and Cena because I'd be invested into the storyline. As a fan, I'd be furious to see Cena win.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Ross just signed with Fox Sports so I think he can be ruled out, I think. Why Fox Sports signed him? No idea

    ReplyDelete
  140. Classic. Easy match to book: Warrior beats Hardy like a drum, Hardy sells like nuts until the comeback. Warrior's complete lack of skill is easy to cover when you've got an extremely sympathetic opponent.

    ReplyDelete
  141. What's really weird about that is he's never actually been in a Rumble before.

    ReplyDelete
  142. Undertaker would like to work with one of the hottest guys in the company who can carry him to a great match that he'll be paid a lot of money to take part in and win? The man just can't stop giving back can he?

    ReplyDelete
  143. 2. No. Undertaker stays over by being the most protected gimmick in the history of wrestling. His "Streak" is his only drawing power. Whereas guys like Rock and Austin stayed perpetually over by virtue of their performance, Undertaker has had to be booked a certain way to keep his "Legend" status. Not taking away from the guy's ability to play the character and work 20+ years. Just addressing the question of whether Undertaker alone is a draw, outside of the Wrestlemania Streak

    ReplyDelete
  144. Plus, if Taker just loved Bryan that much and wanted to take a stand for him, he would just call Vince/HHH and say "listen, you got it all wrong with the Bryan kid. You really oughta pull the trigger."

That's how you swing your political weight around, not by fucking up other people's creative/booking plans by demanding a match that monopolizes one of their biggest names and fits no ongoing narrative (not to mention Bryan doesn't win that match and is way beyond getting anything out of a "he lost, but BAH GAWD HE FOUGHT" finish).

    ReplyDelete
  145. Well at this point with the injuries and all he seems to have to be talked into working Wrestlemania every year, and they likely just let him have whatever match he wants....so requesting to work with Bryan may be no different than requesting to work with Punk last year or HHH the year before, it might just be his call.

But in general he's played a character that rarely lost unless he was blown up, didn't have to sell a whole lot, and in general was always booked to look strong in any situation - either he's a good politician or he just had nothing to complain about.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Which naturally explains why all the PPVs he headlined over the years that weren't WM bombed, why no one watched those shows where he faced Ambrose or where he, Kane and OMGDANIELBRYAN faced the Shield, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Regarding Taker/Bryan...

Undertaker certainly has earned to have his voice heard and has more input on who he gets to face than most guys do (which he's earned). But I doubt it's as simple as he gets to pick whoever he wants, and the WWE has to book and promote around it.

Honestly, I think probably a bit of back and forth process. Vince may propose a few names, Undertaker responds back with some names, and they go back and forth until the find something they can both live with.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Ugh, can just see Cena's shitty shrug and grin when he loses

    ReplyDelete
  149. Storyline, it makes sense that AJ was jumped from bell to bell, and Sting's not been jumped yet.

Matchwise, that REALLY needed to be the opposite.

    ReplyDelete
  150. So in two of your three examples, Cena actually didn't do anything that you're trying to pin on him. He looked competitive in a WM main event? *GASP* And, really, a DQ win in an elimination match is quite a far cry from ending their streak, which actually happened at the hands of Darling Daniel Bryan.

But hey, it's Cena hating, no need for facts to be get in the way.

    ReplyDelete
  151. Okay, I just realized this somehow ended up in the wrong thread. Shit.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Not mine. Never mine! And fuck it. I dislike Cena. I don't care how many kids he visits. I don't. I've never liked the character and the dude is a 19 year old douche in a 36 year old douche's body.

At least Batista is charming in his own weird way. Dude won me over with his DVD. But hey. I don't know. Sometimes people just rub you the wrong way. I also really hate the Smiths and the band "America".

But for this. I need something more than Cena is a big star and so is Undertaker. I need a story. A raison d'aitre. I need a reason to care about a match. Of course if Cena was heel we'd have no problem. However, I just...I want it to happen, but I don't think it will.

Does anyone here? Officer Farva? Do you believe in your heart that Vince is going to turn Cena heel?

Sigh. I don't know. Time for sleep.

    Yeah, that sounds about right.

    ReplyDelete
  155. Well, yeah, but in a good way. "Who is this guy that's saving cm punk?" Plus he was all over the punk DVD and the pipebomb promo was played a zillion times, so he's got at least some name recognition.

Even funnier would be Hall, Nash, Waltman, HBK, and HHH doing the same thing that Punk and the Nexus (or was it the S.E.S.?) did a couple years back. I have a better shot of being in the Rumble than that ever happening, though.

I love Generico, but that move is stupid.

A ROH invasion at the Rumble would be awesome. Generico (w/mask), Adam Cole, Kevin Steen, Tomaso Ciampa, Michael Elgin... My Clique scenario above is about 1000x more likely than this ever happening.

It's basically the only one left. Only one left in wrestling period, really.

    ReplyDelete
  160. So he was a draw outside of Wrestlemania then?

I remember seeing a shoot interview (can't remember who it was), where he said that Kerry thought he was so good looking that if he killed himself he'd shoot himself in the chest.

    ReplyDelete
  162. Amsterdam_Adam_CurryJanuary 24, 2014 at 12:07 AM

Kerry, Mike, and Chris killed themselves. Jack (the oldest) died in an accident when he was 6, David either died of of a severe intestinal problem or a drug overdose depending on who you believe, Kevin is the only one still alive.

Renegade is another guy you can add to the list, though technically everyone that died of a drug over committed suicide, even if they didn't do it intentionally (and a lot of them may have, we'll really never know.

  163. Amsterdam_Adam_CurryJanuary 24, 2014 at 12:10 AM

That's how he got in? I remember watching that live, and thinking "who the fuck is Doug Gilbert?"

  164. Amsterdam_Adam_CurryJanuary 24, 2014 at 12:15 AM

I generally hate surprise returns if the guys returning are just doing that match and leaving. I'll make exceptions for high card/main event people (it would be great if Roberts, Hall, and DDP were consecutive entrants), but shit like having the Godfather come in, get a quick pop, and be eliminated in 15 seconds is just stupid.

    ReplyDelete
  165. Seriously though. Spike pay them for the show so basically they hand Challenge TV a tape for what must be more than ROH get for a gate. it's not like wrestling pays as much as regular TV stars get either. TNA must make aeroplanes out of the money they get and just chuck it out the window.

    ReplyDelete
  166. I remember it being a match with 3 teams of 2.
