The PG Era Rant: Raw, 1/27/14

WARNING: Due to the unanimous feelings about the reaction to last night's Royal Rumble, this RAW will contain what is certain to be a running gag that will get old fast. If you don't like it, I won't do it again, but I just want to make sure I get the temperature of the Internet correct.

When last we left our heroes, the Rumble winner was Not Daniel Bryan, which appeared to be all that mattered.

I didn't catch the live look-in ad because a high school friend was on Jeopardy and I watched that instead. I regret nothing. (For those who care, she won huge to become the new champion. Go Julie!)

The PG Era Rant for Raw, January 27, 2014.

Live from Cleveland. First person to find Mick Foley dressed as a sailor, please direct him to Atlanta.

Your hosts are two guys who went 1 minute in their last Rumble appearance... and Michael Cole.

We open with clips from last night, where Randy Orton retained the WWE Title. Give the production company credit – they make it sound like the booing was directed specifically at Orton.

Triple H and Stephanie are out first. We get clips of Brock Lesnar annihilating Big Show, which does my heart good. (I've warned you – I really don't like Big Show or Triple H.) The chair being broken is such an amazing visual, especially since I bet it wasn't planned. Stephanie gets the first Sign Point of the night. Stephanie is excited and happy about the Rumble, and here comes the YES chants. Stephanie: “Yes! Yes it was one of the most epic Royal Rumbles in history.” HHH: “Aw, did someone not get what they wanted? That's too bad.” Triple H seems baffled that the fans aren't happy. I can hear a Daniel Bryan chant, but most people are booing. HHH keeps running down last night, but the crowd is just booing him. Mentioning Not Daniel Bryan winning the Rumble gets huge boos. But Stephanie lets us know there's still the Elimination Chamber. At that event, Randy Orton will defend against five people in the Chamber. And now, here's Daniel Bryan as the crowd goes LOUD. JBL calls what Bryan does a sign of disrespect, but Cole says it's what the fans want. Lawler points out the YES chant wasn't for the Authority. JBL: “Yeah, and I wanted wings and never got them. You want things, doesn't mean you'll get them.” The whole arena is doing YES. Bryan asks them to be quiet because the Authority doesn't like it. Don't make them mad, after all. OF COURSE they just chant more, but which? Stephanie calls it a cheap parlor trick. Bryan talks about his match with Bray Wyatt, calling it one of the toughest in his career, but that his match will be among the best in Rumble history. More YES chants. HHH gives Bryan credit for “a good little effort”. Stephanie is nicer. Then Bryan says the biggest disappointment was that he wasn't in it. This story has gone meta. Bryan acknowledges the undercard match, but he says he still wanted to be in it, and so did the fans. The Yes Movement™ is now canon. But the Authority kept denying him. Stephanie tries to explain that, hey, he already HAD a match, and with everything he's been through, they thought he might suffer an injury. Crowd thinks they suck. Bryan calls their bluff over being put in jeopardy, seeing as he's already had multiple opponents over and over, but HHH says, yeah, so we decided to stop doing it. Bryan says they don't care about his health or his business – he says they're acting personal. Stephanie is upset and turns the tables: Bryan only thinks of himself, while they think of the whole roster. “Do you honestly believe everyone only came here to see you?” Crowd: “YES YES YES!” Bryan loses his straight face. Bryan asks if they were here to see Randy Orton (“NO!”), Triple H (“NO!”), or whoever they want. Heck, that's what makes WWE awesome: everyone's here for someone, but they WANT Daniel Bryan right now. The crowd is now an active babyface character. I love it. Stephanie says they're not united on one chant, which INSTANTLY unites them on a Daniel Bryan chant. Bryan's not here to complain since it's in the past, but hey, there are five spots in the Chamber, right? Bryan wants in that match. And so does the crowd. Want him in it. I don't think they'd fit in the pod. Bryan talks past Stephanie to Hunter and says they're not leaving until it happens. HHH glares at Bryan in a staredown that WILL be part of your WM30 buildup if they know what they're doing. Trips says there's more than one person in the ring, because here comes the Shield. Cole is audibly rolling his eyes, as is Lawler. Bryan anticipates this and gets a chair to hold them off. Rollins tumbled on his entrance, I think. Didn't get a good look. Sign Guy: “REIGNS, TAKE YOUR TALENTS TO SOUTH BEACH.” And of course Reigns gets the first shot in and the 3-on-1 begins. But Sheamus is on his way to the ring to make the save to a HUGE pop. The Shield mugs Sheamus as he's not doing much better. But John Cena is here to even the sides. We have a six-man main event, I bet. And nothing wrong with it. All heck is breaking loose as the faces clean house. PLAY DANIEL BRYAN'S MUSIC! That was one AMAZING opening segment.

Randy Orton will be here tonight.

Dear WWE: if I pre-order the Network, will you stop putting these ads on? PS: how do you pre-order the Network?

Earlier tonight, the inevitable six-man tag will be a qualifying match for the Chamber, with the winning team (all of them) in the Chamber.

Rey Mysterio and Sin Cara II v. We the People. Cesaro carries the sign: “WANTED – TWO MASKED MEN WHO SPEAK A FOREIGN LANGUAGE.” Colter: “Well well well; look what el gato dragged in.” He says criminals are the ones who wear masks. More faux Spanish before we get the salute. Cesaro and Rey start. Cesaro with a wristlock, but Rey fights out and gets an armdrag. Cara in, and the tecnicos do Poetry in Motion into a rana. Cesaro stays in control and brings in Swagger, but both People get taken over Junior Santo style. Blind charge by Santo misses, and Cara keeps up the offense with the Tajiri elbow for one. Cara with a sunset flip try, but Swagger picks him up and throws him only to get low bridged out. Cara with a tope suicida to follow. Colter chews Swagger and Cesaro out and slaps Swagger. He has to be restrained by Cesaro, then goes back in and suplexes Cara before tackling him. He's mad. Colter as we go to break: “Take out that anger on him!” Back in with Colter upset while Cesaro elbows Cara. We get a salute, but it opens the door for a Cara flurry. Cesaro is staggered, but Swagger cuts off the hot tag only to get caught in what I have to call a tilt-a-whirl DDT. Cesaro can't cut the tag off as Cara flips him over the ropes, but Cesaro pulls Rey off the apron to keep Cara in. Cesaro tries a German, but Cara cradles him for two. Cesaro with an overhead slam for two. Swagger in, and it's a double free-fall drop for two. Swagger stomps away and gets the Vaderbomb, but Cara moves. Cesaro's legal, but he misses an avalanche anyway. Hot tag Rey, and he goes flying to take Cesaro out. Flying seated senton and prawn bulldog follow for two. Big kick gets two, Swagger saves. JBL thinks it's over. Cara takes Swagger out, and Cara alley-oops Rey into 619 position. Cara tags himself in after the 619, but the Swanton misses. Cara rolls through and springboards straight into a European Uppercut. Neutralizer finishes at 9:49. I thought they were going for a face turn, but if it's a push either way, I'll like it. **3/4

Don't forget that main event: John Cena, Daniel Bryan, and Sheamus against Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose, and Seth Rollins. Three Elimination Chamber spots will be decided.

Also, we get a tag team title rematch between the Rhodes Brothers and the New Age Outlaws.

Bad News Barrett is at the podium. That gavel is going to get him over. Especially if you use it 50 times. Today's bad news for those of us who watch TV: The Miz has a match tonight. It's against the other Ohio native, Dolph Ziggler. Thankfully, the winner does not own Cleveland, because then everyone would be a loser. Especially Cleveland. You're all losers, basically. If he uses the gavel as a weapon in his matches, he'll get over.

Appearing on the WWE Network: Monday Night War. Here's the thing: by all accounts, you can't sign up for the WWE Network until the day of the launch, which strikes me as a bad idea. The announcers trying to read the countdown graphic is kind of amusing.

Fandango is next.

Seriously? Kid Rock as the singer of the WrestleMania theme? Again? Is he still that popular?

Fandango v. R-Truth. Xavier Woods is on commentary. That reminds me: wasn't he supposed to be in the Rumble? Truth opens with the advantage, getting elbowed in the back as we see Emma is still at ringside. Truth with a backslide for one. Truth remains on top, with the splits legdrop, but Fandango bails. Woods does bring up that “his number was stolen before I could see it” and blames JBL. Summer Rae runs interference, and Fandango gets a clothesline to take over. Back in, Fandango with a knee to the back for two. Short lariat by Fandango gets two. Woods is working on his PhD. JBL: “Like Dr. Shelby?” Fandango with a suplex for two. We HIT THE CHINLOCK as Woods says he wants to specialize in teaching autistic kids. At Walden University. JBL puts East Carolina over as the Harvard of the South. Nyuk nyuk. (It's a rib, don't worry if you don't get it.) Blind charge by Fandango misses and Truth gets the comeback. Suplex stunner gets two. Axe kick misses, and Fandango with a spin kick for two. Fandango staggers to the top rope, but Truth is up and gets the Little Jimmy to win at 3:31. Commentary was actually more fun than the match, and that's not a slam on the match either. *

The Champ is here! Randy Orton, I mean.

Man, where was the Reading Challenge when I was the right age? I would've loved a free trip to, say, WrestleMania 8. Knowing me, I would've instead won a visit from El Matador or Tatanka.

Brad Maddox is here. He introduces himself after Justin Roberts introduces him, and all Maddox does is introduce Randy Orton. The announcers mention that the Wyatts were out to attack Cena, even though it wasn't clear who they were after until Cena attacked Wyatt pre-emptively. Orton: “The Champ is here.” Despite what people thought, Orton was victorious again and left with the gold. Was it hollow? Who cares? Orton only cares that it was a victory. And now he finds out he's defending in the Chamber. He glares at Maddox and asks if it's his idea. Orton wants respect, since he's the Face of the Company. And here comes Not Daniel Bryan. Not Bryan looks like he just got off the Greyhound bus. Orton is furious that Not Bryan is here. Crowd boos him. HHH referring to Not Bryan as his friend earlier probably didn't help. Not Bryan congratulates Orton – no, really, sincerely. Crowd chants for the real Daniel Bryan. Not Bryan has three reasons to be back: to win the Rumble, to headline Mania, and to win the title. Not Bryan says it isn't personal and rattles off the people who he doesn't care if it is, looking to the crowd instead of Orton when mentioning Daniel Bryan. Hm. Whether Orton likes it or not, Not Bryan will be the champ after WrestleMania. Before we can go any further, Viking Space Lord Brock Lesnar is in the house! Orton looks a little worried for obvious reasons. Maddox looks VERY worried. Paul Heyman introduces himself and his client before saying that Brock is getting impatient. See, Maddox needs to tell the Authority that either they can make history (right here in Cleveland, Ohio – although Heyman seems sick to say it) by putting Brock against Orton tonight, or he can go with Choice #2, which is Brock against Not Bryan. Heyman doesn't have a favorite suggestion, because no matter which choice is made, the fans will win. The answer must be given tonight... “or else”. Maddox looks like he's going to die. Brock leaves, glaring at both Orton and Not Bryan as he does. Heyman: “I'm just an advocate.”

Just a reminder: our confirmed main event is the six-man Chamber qualifier. Also, two Cleveland natives in Dolph Ziggler and The Miz will go at it.

Dolph Ziggler v. The Miz. Dolph has a Cavaliers custom-made jersey. I hope this turns out better than the last time Miz was in Cleveland. Miz has a Browns #84 jersey. Cole brings out the HIGH SCHOOLS they went to. And they give Boxing Intros to the two. This needs Teddy Long to make it a tag match. Tie-up as JBL unloads the Cleveland jokes. Dolph with a headlock and tackle. They do a series of reversals until Miz gets a knee smash to the gut. Through-the-ropes clothesline by Miz, but he gets caught off the top by a superkick for two. There are Cleveland sports guys in the crowd. Rocker Dropper misses, but Dolph with a sleeper. This goes on for a while. There's a “Cleveland Rocks” chant. Miz armdrags out and gets a thrust kick for two. Now we're told the Steelers suck. Can't say I disagree. Miz with the Finale try, but Dolph rolls him up for two. Miz with the backbreaker, then a figure-four try. Emphasis on try. Dolph makes the ropes. Cole and JBL hate Cleveland. A second try leads to both getting two on a small package. Zig Zag ends it at 4:08. That's it? Kind of a waste. 3/4*

The Tag Title rematch is later tonight.

Now that ten million people have downloaded the WWE App, we can stop shilling it, right?

Ryback and Curtis Axel v. The Usos. JBL remembered he wasn't supposed to lead the crowd in the chant. For once. Ryback will start with Jey. Ryback shoves him into the corner but gets hit with uppercuts. Jey is caught, and Ryback throws him corner-to-corner. Ryback rips Jey's shirt off before sending him into the heel corner and tagging Axel in. Axel with stomps and a dropkick. Jey fights to his feet, but Axel gets the Northern Lariat. He bites (Jey's forehead). Ryback in, and the two get their corner double-team into a Ryback stalling suplex. Which he keeps up for about 10 seconds. It gets two. Ryback bullies Jey around, but Jey fights back only to get elbowed. Axel back in, and he chops away on Jey in the corner. Ryback has Iron Man on his tights. He tags in and gets a snapmare and back kick. We HIT THE CHINLOCK. Jey fights out, but a Ryback blind charge misses and Ryback goes all the way to the floor. Axel helps him back in, gets the tag, and cuts off the Usos... until Jimmy smacks Axel and gets the tag. Axel does a 360 off of a calf kick. Jimmy pounds Axel so hard in the corner the ref separates them, which leads to the Rikishi hip check, that misses. Ryback with a blind tag, and he clubs Jimmy. Shell Shock follows, but JEY tags himself in and superkicks Ryback. So does Jimmy. Superfly Splash follows as Jey dives onto Axel, and it gets the pin at 5:48. Good finish to a bad match. 1/2*

Don't miss our main event! Also, who will join Ultimate Warrior in the Class of 2014?

Kofi Kingston v. Alberto Del Rio. So Kofi is on fire as a face, has a win over Orton, and just had another great non-elimination in the Rumble. Meanwhile, ADR gets an insert promo to talk about how he hates Not Daniel Bryan and how Not Bryan will not make WrestleMania. ADR backs Kofi into the corner and kicks him in the gut before pounding away. ADR with a snapmare and he rides him to the ropes, choking away. Kofi comes back with kicks, then a running dropkick. A big kick to the gut follows, then he leaps to the top for the ten-punch countalong. ADR with a mule kick to stop the momentum. Lariat gets two. ADR gets suckered to the ropes and does his out of the ring bump, and Kofi follows to dive on ADR. Back in, Kofi is caught with the step-up enzuigiri. ADR rolls outside and drags Kofi with him, throwing him into the barricade. Back in, ADR gets two. We go to the chinlock now, as the crowd wants Randy Savage. ADR knocks Kofi down and goes up, landing the double axhandle and stomping away. Now the crowd chants for JBL. Del Rio: the opposite of heat. ADR pounds away in the corner as JBL acknowledges the crowd. ADR is furious at JBL stealing his thunder. So the crowd goes for Jerry. ADR and Kofi are both up top, and both fall off to the floor. Lawler salutes the crowd. So clearly it's Michael Cole's turn as we go to break. Back in, and ADR gets two for some reason. We go back to the chinlock, which is totally going to help the crowd. Kofi gets out with a jawbreaker, then a sunset flip gets two. ADR gets a German suplex for two. ADR looks to the sign before charging Kofi and getting elbowed. Kofi keeps up the counter-attack, going up top and getting a Tornado DDT for a double KO. Kofi up first and he begins the comeback until ADR kicks the leg. The low superkick is countered with a cradle for two. Kofi with the Boom Drop (which is still over) and he's ready to finish. ADR ducks and goes to the outside, but Kofi catches him and brings him in. SOS follows, but ADR's foot is on the rope. Crowd is angry. ADR gets the tilt-a-whirl backbreaker as the crowd chants for Rob Van Dam now. ADR gets the SIGN POINT OF DOOM and signals for the armbar, but Kofi ducks and misses Trouble in Paradise as ADR gets the Backstabber for two. ADR is frustrated. Kofi gets a chant as ADR goes up, but Kofi crotches him. He follows up, but ADR shoves him down and gets the guillotine stomp. That spot's really contrived, but the crowd buys it. ADR begs Kofi to get up, and the low superkick connects for the pin at 13:36. Why? ***1/4 Seriously, Kofi has all sorts of momentum and Del Rio is so dead that the crowd chants for literally everyone else in his matches, so why feed Kofi to ADR? Oh, right, so that Not Daniel Bryan has an opponent to beat.

Hey, we got a title match coming up, and it's next. Plus, someone is facing Brock Lesnar.

WWE Tag Team Championships: New Age Outlaws v. Rhodes Brothers. Road Dogg fires up the crowd because he doesn't seem to realize he's a heel. Seriously, did they just not get the memo? But before the match, Dogg wants to talk about the rumors of their friendship with the Authority, and he says they became champs because they're the best. The Rhodeses were good, but not good enough, and the Rhodeses knock them out of the ring as their rebuttal. The Outlaws can be overheard saying they shouldn't be doing this. Gunn and Dustin start. Gunn mocks Goldust and gets beaten up for it. A quick one-count leads to an armdrag and Gunn calls time and bails. Road Dogg fans Gunn off with JBL's hat. Cody is nonplussed. Dogg tags in, and after some stalling, he walks into a headlock and gets tackled for one. Dogg: “What's going on here?” Goldust sits in a neutral corner and waits as Dogg recovers. Goldust fakes out a test of strength and keeps it up, and Cody in with an elbow to the arm. Headlock takedown gets one for Cody. Cody works the arm, but Dogg slugs out of it only to be caught with the following clothesline for two. He stole that move from DiBiase Jr. Cody to the armbar, and he cuts off a Dogg charge, but when he goes up the Outlaws bail out. At least they're acting heel during the match. Cody: “Get your old ass in the ring!” Dogg slowly returns, losing a strike-fest. Cody with a snapmare and another armbar. He drops knees into the arm and gets one. Dogg with a knee to take over and he boxes Cody, but gets caught jiving and Cody dropkicks for two. Goldust in, and he keeps the fight up with a snapmare and elbow for two. Now Goldust works the arm. Dogg rushes him into the champs' corner, and Gunn tags in and punches away. It gets one. Gunn with a straight right, and Dogg returns with a kick to the gut. Goldust blocks and floors Dogg, pounding him in the corner. Gunn tags in and works over Goldust, but he puts his head down and Goldust gets the kneeling uppercut. Inverted atomic drop, but Goldust runs into a big boot as we go to break. We return with Gunn working Goldust over and whipping him back and forth, but he runs into a powerslam. Both men need a tag in the worst way, but Dogg stops Goldust only to get hit with... was that the Canadian Destroyer?? It gets two. It also allows the hot tag to Cody, who runs over Gunn and gets the sliding punch. High knee follows and Dogg tries to dump Cody, only for him to get a springboard dropkick on both Outlaws. Disaster Kick misses Gunn, and Gunn gets a clothesline as Viking Space Lord Brock Lesnar heads to the ring. F-5 to both Rhodeses as the match ends at 11:56. Really? **1/4 Apparently, the Authority said “or else”. So Brock doesn't have a match tonight, which means Brock is going to destroy the brothers. He has a chair and goes to town on both men. The chair falls apart again, from fewer shots this time, as Brock glares into the camera. And oh yeah, the Outlaws are still champions. You wonder if the Authority told Brock to go take it out on the people in the ring, since they do not like the Rhodes family in storyline. That would be a neat hook.

Heaven help us if he interrupts the main event Elimination Chamber qualifier. Also, don't try this at home. Please do not get hit with a chair by Brock Lesnar at home.

AJ Lee, Tamina, Aksana, and Alicia Fox v. Cameron, Naomi, Brie Bella, and Nikki Bella. Aksana and Cameron start. And the trash talking begins as Cameron goes “gurl bye”only to get a snapmare. Brie in, and she gets a second-rope dropkick for one. They exchange kicks, and Nikki tags herself in as they get a snapmare to dropkick combo. Alicia in, and she gets hit with a flying snapmare only to score a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker for two. Alicia carries Nikki to the corner and tags in AJ, who is the only person with any heat because she's the only one who always wins. She goes to a chinlock with body-scissors. Nikki fights out, but AJ calmly blocks and gets a swinging neckbreaker for two. Aksana back in, and she stomps away on Nikki and taunts the faces. Side suplex, Dino Bravo style, and she circles Nikki before covering for two. Elbowdrop follows, but a second one misses. Aksana prevents the tag and Tamina tags herself in and stomps the leg. Big slam follows, plus a kneedrop and back chinlock. Nikki bridges out, but Tamina clubs the gut as she does. Big knee to the gut and Hammer Throw follow, then the JACKET THROW OF DOOM. How is that legal? Tamina puts Nikki up top and lowers her into the Tree of Woe before kicking away. Nikki with a kick to get out of it as she creates separation™. Another kick and it's hot tag Naomi. She takes it to AJ with a dropkick and... uh... tail-wiggle drop? What WAS that? Flip clothesline follows, then a gyration legdrop. It gets two. The twins take Tamina out of the equation... except Aksana and Alicia and Cameron run in and it's a three-to-three suplex, leaving Naomi and AJ. Butt butt by Naomi gets the pin at 5:40. Better than it had any right to be. *1/4 So now we know who's going to lose to AJ next during her eternal title reign. Everybody dance! Brie does the Worm.

Up next: the Hall of Fame expands by one more act.

And now Jerry Lawler will introduce the next Hall of Famer... JAKE THE SNAKE ROBERTS! Fantastic decision. One of the best storytellers of his time, and the DDT is a default finishing move because of him. Please let Damien or a stand-in make an appearance at the show. Either that, or Dean Ambrose inducts him.

This segues into announcing you can watch the archive of the WWE Network with all WrestleMania matches, including the occasional “30 for 30” style look at major matches.

Main event, Elimination Chamber triple qualifier: John Cena, Sheamus, and Daniel Bryan v. The Shield. Sheamus and Cena are reasonably over, but NOTHING like Daniel Bryan. Bryan starts to talk to the camera, so they cut to the crowd.

Christian is back on SmackDown!

Uh-oh... during the commercial break it just occurred to me that the Wyatt Family, coming off their big night of attacking John Cena, haven't been seen yet. If the match ends this way and Daniel Bryan's kept out of the main event because of it, the crowd is going to be furious.

Anyway: Main event, Elimination Chamber triple qualifier: John Cena, Sheamus, and Daniel Bryan v. The Shield. Cena and Ambrose start. Ambrose with a headlock, but Cena pushes off and eventualy gets a tackle. Ambrose retreats and tags Rollins in. Rollins tries to calm Ambrose down before he goes for Cena. Cena with a snapmare and they exchange headlocks. Cena with a big right hand to floor Rollins, and Reigns calmly tags in. The crowd is chanting for Reigns. Okay, fine, push him on his own. This time Reigns floors Cena. Another lockup, and this time Cena goes down again. Quick AA try, but Reigns slides out and admonishes Cena. Sheamus in to a huge ovation. Reigns and Sheamus fight over a lockup, with neither getting the edge. Round 2 goes the same way, but Reigns punches out on a corner break. Sheamus fires back, but Reigns with a kick before running into a back elbow. Rude Awakening by Sheamus gets one. Reigns with a shoulder ram and uppercut, but Rollins tags in. Rollins winds up being kicked hard by Sheamus on a duck-down, and Sheamus with the Finlay Roll. Big kick to the back folows, and Rollins is tied up in the ropes and given... you know what, I call this spot the Ten of Clubs. Remember it for future rants. Another Finlay Roll try, but Rollins slides out and kicks out the knee. Ambrose in and everyone stomps away. Ambrose boxes Sheamus in the ropes as the crowd wants Bryan. Ambrose runs into a Polish Hammer, and after asking the crowd, Sheamus brings Bryan in. Kicks follow as Ambrose goes into a guard in the corner. Cross-corner dropkick and he puts Ambrose up, getting the top rope Frankensteiner. It gets two. European Uppercut follows, but Ambrose escapes and brings in Rollins, who is instantly caught in the bow-and-arrow surfboard. He switches to a chinlock in the hold, but his own shoulders are down for two so he switches back. Sheamus in and he kicks Rollins' block off. Legdrop follows for two, brudda. Sheamus works the arm and brings in Cena for a double suplex. It gets two. Blind charge misses and Rollins with a clothesline for one. Rollins shepherds Cena to the corner as we go to break. We return with Ambrose pounding on Cena on the apron, sliding back in and cutting off the hot tag with a variation of the ankle lock. Rollins in, and he smashes Cena and stomps away. He taunts Cena, who is only half-awake, but he takes too long to do it and gets slugged out. Blind charge by Cena eats boot, and the Buff Blockbuster gets two. Rollins keeps working over Cena in the ropes, setting him up for Reigns' drive-by dropkick. It gets two before Cena gets the ropes. Reigns calls for the Superman Punch on Cena, connecting but not covering right away. He calls out for a spear, but Cena sidesteps and Reigns flies out of the ring. It's a long crawl for Cena, and Reigns cuts it off with an elbowsmash. He gets two. Ambrose returns and punches down Cena before stepping on his hand. Another box-out by Ambrose, and he scrapes the face in the corner before getting a Hammer Throw. Another Hammer Throw try is reversed and both men are down. Rollins cuts off the tag again, and a tug-of-war breaks out. Rollins knocks Bryan off the apron to stop the tag and then mocks Sheamus. It draws him in, so the Shield corner Cena and Rollins just mauls him. Ambrose in, and it's a double suplex. Ambrose gets two. Ambrose gets an armbar and scrapes the face again while holding it. He switches to a sleeperhold, as the corners leads a Cena chant. And it's a straight Cena chant – no dueling! Cena carries Ambrose and throws him into the corner. Ambrose recovers with a knee to the gut and DDT for two. Rollins is perplexed. Ambrose calmly walks... right into the AA! Cena's too dead to cover, but he gets the HOT HOT HOT tag to Bryan. Reigns is flying, Rollins is beaten down, and Bryan does his Video Game Comeback, landing a dive on Ambrose. He floors Rollins and goes up with the missile dropkick and kip-up. Crowd is going nuts. YES kicks are next, and the roundhouse connects, Reigns saves. Sheamus enters to cut Reigns off, but he gets speared. Cena catches Reigns and tries the AA, but Reigns avoids it and spears Cena, too. Bryan with the running knee to Reigns, but Rollins rolls him up with the tights for two. I thought that was it. It's Bryan and Rollins now, and it's a slugfest. Bryan flips over on a German but is caught with the turnbuckle bomb for two. This Is Awesome. Even if the crowd doesn't say it. Crowd is chanting YES. Rollins with the Stinger Splash on Bryan as everyone else is out. He goes up, but Bryan catches him with a German suplex. Bryan is firing up, but the crossover dropkick misses. Rollins rolls him up, Bryan reverses, and it's the Yes Lock but Ambrose saves. Brogue Kick to Ambrose and he's down. Flying knee to Sheamus and the two legal men are left. Dive by Rollins misses and the two collide mid-ring. Cena's the only one up now, and he begs Bryan for a tag, getting it. Reigns gets one too, and Cena goes for the STF, locking it in. Reigns rolls over and POWERS OUT OF IT. And now the Wyatts interrupt! NO! Not this! And they all attack Cena for the DQ at 23:59. Sheamus and Bryan fight back, but the fresh men seem to have the edge. So does this mean the faces are in the Chamber? They're named the winners, after all. And yes, it's official: they're in! The Shield is FURIOUS. And this means the Shield/Wyatts brawl is likely on for the Chamber that we've been clamoring for since November. The Shield are, quite understandably, throwing a tantrum at ringside, and they tear up the table to make a statement. Wow – that's how you do a six-man and weave multiple stories together. ****1/4 for the whole thing.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

Well, throughout the night I was telling my minions that the value of the night would be directly and absolutely linked to the main event. As you can see, I was immersed in the main event, which is a great sign. I'm glad to see Sheamus back – he's not a workrate machine, but he's a good power wrestler and the crowd loves him. And all the pieces are falling into place:

Not Daniel Bryan is going to face either Bryan or Orton for the gold;
If it's Orton, Bryan is going to get Triple H;
The Shield and Wyatts are set for their brawl, which will likely lead to the Reigns face turn;
The Wyatts still have the issue with Cena for THEIR Mania match;
And Brock Lesnar is still a Viking Space Lord.

We keep whining about the booking, but tonight they took a big step into making it right. Now Daniel Bryan has his chance – win or lose, he gets his chance, and that's what matters. The next few weeks show that the Road to Mania is when the WWE ups their game and really brings out the goods. We are in interesting times.

STATS:

MATCH TIME: 78:27 over eight matches
BEST MATCH: The Chamber qualifier
WORST MATCH: Usos/Rybaxil
NIGHT MVP: Daniel Bryan, just because the crowd said so.

FINAL RATING: 7.5.

Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.”

Okay, guys, enjoy the week. Scott and Tommy will keep the fires warm. I might come back with a retro review again. Enjoy the Super Bowl. See you Monday.

Comments

  1. Please. I'd rather read a million of your reviews than one more tommy hall joint. Just write everything for now on I thx

    ReplyDelete
  2. Enjoy the reviews but one tip- include paragraph breaks in the matches. It can be a bit much reading one large blob of text.

But I really enjoy these. So prompt!

    ReplyDelete
  3. How on earth do you manage to get these up so quick? That is a talent in itself
    Good review, too.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Bryan will not get HHH - that's Punk

Sheamus is gonna cost Bryan the EC (or vice versa) and we're gonna get that for the WM opener in a callback to a few years ago

  5. Yep, this show was fun, and I thought the booking made a ton of sense. Some scattered thoughts:

    1. Don't know if it will continue, but anyone who watched just this show would come away assuming that Bryan was the tippy top guy in the company. They played his music as the default theme for the three babyface team TWICE, even with Cena there, got the better of Triple H (!!!!!) on the mic in the opening segment, has a "movement" dedicated to him, and they played to the crowd perfectly all night.

    2. Batista was basically a non-factor. That seems...weird.

    3. Credit to Cena, he made Roman Reigns look like a million bucks. Really all of The Shield guys are being made to look great here lately. Cena made Bryan look like The Man too.

As for the booking, whether it was planned or accidental I thought it was great. They've basically turned Bryan into a meta storyline, and as you noted can easily plug him into the title match or a match with Triple H, either of which would be more than fine booking wise. And with the whole direction the opening segment played out in...it actually looks like the worm has turned a little bit here and they might actually be laying the groundwork for a DBry run at the top.

  6. Say what you want about the shitty crowd tonight, but I'll give them this: they absolutely treated Batista like a heel that whole segment. You could already see WWE protecting Dave by not having him open the show or do a solo promo, and getting Brock out there to deflect the heat.

Gawd, it's gotta be a bug up their ass that he's not gonna be able to get over as a baby face.

    ReplyDelete
  7. "Please do not get hit with a chair by Brock Lesnar at home."

This reminds me of the time Don West told viewers to not try this at home during a steel asylum match and Tenay responded with, "Yes, for those of you who have steel asylums at home, please don't try this."

Don West just said, "I know man, I've had one in my house for years, I still haven't climbed out."

    ReplyDelete
  8. Jesus Christ man, repeat it with me: Daniel Bryan is not winning the title at EC. Sheamus costs him the match, and they feud for mania.

Batista vs Orton at mania DEAL WITH IT.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Andy, what I want you to do is film one of those Cornette style rants he used to do in 97. Do one a week and post it on the blog. I think you will find that therapeutic, and we will find it entertaining.

    ReplyDelete
  10. John Cena is a household name, but so is garbage!

    ReplyDelete
  11. I think Batista will get over as a babyface...just so long as they've got Bryan doing something worthwhile. If Batista's getting the rocket push while the crowd is unsatisfied with Bryan's position, then yeah, they're gonna shit on him.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Well, I'm pretty sure I said that Bryan/Triple H at Mania instead of Bryan in the Title match would be fine.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Tommy Hall is a hell of a midcard hand for this site. How many people can claim to have reviewed both Nitro and Impact without trying self-asphyxiation?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Much appreciated.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Seconded on both counts. The spacing things helps a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  16. The thing is, I don't think fans will accept anything as worthwhile for Bryan other than the WWE title match. Since that's not happening at Mania, Batista's gonna catch heat for it.

That and the crowds just don't seem to like Batista anymore. Tonight was an uber mark crowd (the Lets Go Cena chants were pretty loud) and they still booed Batista's ass. I think fans have just agreed Big Dave seems like a douche.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Y'know, I'm fine with Punk/HHH happening at 'Mania with Punk getting his win back, but it seems that Bryan/HHH is where the money really is. It just works better. Bryan/HHH fits into the underdog vs. overlord narrative better than Punk/HHH and the promos would be a lot less snarky than if we get Punk/HHH. Plus the match would be better.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I like Andy and Tommy. Good work all around!

    ReplyDelete
  19. During the Legends Roundtable when everyone gave their predictions, Flair predicted Big Dave and when the crowd booed he started yelling "learn to love it!"

    ReplyDelete
  20. I have a terrible feeling we're getting Triple H/Bryan at WrestleMania. They did the staredown in the first segment for a little bit too long, like they would need it for video packages.

And I say terrible because we did this with Punk in 2011 and it's going to be the worst when he pins Bryan at WrestleMania.

I think the money on top at WrestleMania (I'm assuming Brock is facing Taker) is in heel Batista vs. Bryan. Batista is SUCH a good heel and they could do the Sting/Vader template to the max.

    ReplyDelete
  21. One more thing on Batista: you had him and Brock in a ring together for what, the first time ever? And the crowd didn't give a shit. No oooohs and aaaahs, no dueling chants, no begging for a fight. No moment. Nothing! Paying those two all that money and the crowd didn't acknowledge it. No way that's what they expected.

    ReplyDelete
  22. He has nothing to lose.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Regardless of whether he wins or loses, Bryan/HHH is a whole lot better for Bryan than the rumoured match-up of him versus Sheamus.

    ReplyDelete
  24. That's how I do mine too.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Nah, they were both part of the final four in the 2003 Rumble.

    ReplyDelete
  26. You're right and Bryan-induced backlash aside (if that's a factor), it's because both of these guys have not been regular performers at all recently (especially Batista, of course). It's like some producers putting together an Andrew Dice Clay tour with Joe Piscopo as the opening act and being surprised that people don't care.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think the whole 'choices' thing with Brock Lesnar is a red herring. I don't think you're going to see a match between him and Batista for the number one contender position. It's two guys they both want to be as strong as possible heading for WM.

Instead, I think the Authority is going to continue ignoring his demands for a title shot, and he's going to keep taking it out on WWE superstars. Just coming to the ring and demolishing people. Eventually the Undertaker has seen enough and comes down and stops him, and then you start your WM build from there.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Just remember anti-smarks: If you say we were worked, I will rub it in your faces later when Sheamus Brogues Bryan through the pod plexiglass at EC and WM ends with Bryan not in possession of a championship.

To be honest, Sheamus kicking Bryan right through the plexiglass would be an incredible spot.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I actually don't think a triple threat match between Batista/Orton/Bryan is out of the question at this point.

If the WWE is being reactive (HA! IF. Of course they're being reactive), then it would literally just be a matter of dropping Bryan into the main event build and turning him into the underdog, against HHH's two buddies who happen to hate each other.

You'd basically be intertwining the history of Orton/Bryan, the paranoia Orton has with HHH/Batista trying to phase him out, the Batista/Orton history, etc. Bryan beats both of HHH's hand-picked boys (then and now) to win the title against all odds.

The most obvious way to do it would be to have Bryan win the title at EC. Cause then Orton gets his rematch, and Batista has his WM title shot, you just put them together... which is exactly what HHH would kayfabe do, considering he doesn't want Bryan with the title. So of course the way to get the belt off of him is to stack the deck by putting both his big bets in the same match against him.

The other, more likely way is to have Bryan lose the EC due to funny business of some kind. Like somebody who had already been eliminated coming back and doing the damage that gets him pinned or some such.... but hell, anything would work. 10 years ago HBK got into the title match by signing somebody else's contract for god's sake.

    ReplyDelete
  38. HBK signed somebody else's contract? I don't remember anything like that.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think that may have been the only time Brock and Kane have ever interacted in a ring, too? I remember Lesnar F-5ing him in that Rumble.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I've never understood what people saw in Batista. He's just an injury prone DDP with a smaller moveset.

I'd be just as hyped if this push had gone to Max Moon.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I was wondering how they'd set up Brock and Taker, but this makes perfect sense.

    ReplyDelete
  42. During the HHH/Benoit contract signing for WrestleMania XX after Benoit won the Rumble. HBK superkicked Benoit and wrote his name on the contract as well, and apparently that was legally binding.

Unless your comment was a "Benoit being erased from WWE history" joke.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Probably. IIRC Lesnar was on SmackDown for most of his run, and Kane was on RAW pretty much that entire time.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Wyatts vs. The Shield in an elimination chamber match would be as close to a Wargames match as the chamber has ever gotten. That would rule!

    ReplyDelete
  45. To spare your feelings, I have no comment.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Sorry Don, but the fans are in another organization's arena.

so no punk on the show (was he even mentioned?), and christian doesnt even get a full week of return vignettes

    ok then

    ReplyDelete
  49. I think this was the Bryan week, then next week Punk will come out and they'll further his angle leading up to the show.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Bryan wasn't ignored, they addressed the situation right away to start and though he wasn't the primary focus of the main event, his team won and got equal exposure and he's in the Chamber, period. Meanwhile, looks like next week might be Shield vs. Wyatts to see who fills out the other 3 slots (or is the Chamber 8 man? I can't remember) in a brawl I would really like to see...

OK guys, fine. FINE...this was good. Now, keep going.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I would guess Punk is in there, maybe Brock...

    ReplyDelete
  52. Knowing Christian's injury luck of late, the camera would probably fall on him while he is filming vignettes....

    ReplyDelete
  53. Not Punk, after last night I think he's gonna go against Kane and that'll be fodder to go against HHH. Maybe. After tonight, HHH/Bryan actually seems to be the way to go instead.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Batista had good chemistry with Taker and wasnt bad in his heel role in his last run...

    ReplyDelete
  55. I hope we get HHH/Bryan at Mania, it makes the most sense...

...HHH has done plenty of jobs at Mania and I could see him putting Bryan over...

    ReplyDelete
  56. Then we can get Punk vs shirtless Kane at Mania!

    ReplyDelete
  57. There are two more slots I think. 2 guys to start,, then four guys in the pods. So they have four so far (Orton, Bryan, Sheamus and Cena).

My guess? The Rhodes get the last two spots maybe in a match against the Shield that the Shield loses due to Wyatt interference.

Then one of them eliminates the other during the match, pushing them closer to the Rhodes vs Rhodes matchup.

I always figured this new corporate position was kind of a reward for being such a great company man over the years, and doing everything and anything the company asked. So, did Punk get screwed out of his match for DB and go home, or was there just too much to squeeze into that show, because he wasn't even mentioned. lol.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Love your new avatar ;)

    ReplyDelete
  68. The Triple Threat, with Orton cashing in his rematch clause, would make sense. As would an ending where Bryan never technically gets eliminated or something and they insert him into the match.
Most likely scenario though is probably what everyone is assuming and Sheamus turns heel and brogue kicks him so we can get Orton-Batista as they planned it before those meddling fans cheered for the wrong guy.

    ReplyDelete
  69. IF they suddenly change gears and decide to give DB the title (which won't happen) then they have to do it at WM, or else they miss the real climax point of the story. For me, Bryan winning the title at EC would be as big of a failure as him not winning it at all.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I agree, that would be the preferable way to do it.

....I'm just trying to think of who screws over Bryan (by dealing him the 'killing blow' after already being eliminated), why he does it, and how that leads to him getting a title shot. If it's just some dude, they need to be able to explain why he demands a title shot (and reason why he deserves one) instead of just going for revenge against that dude that screwed him.

I mean the obvious answer is have the Shield do it, infer it was on orders from HHH, and be done with it.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Batista was way above average on the mic when he had the right character ('05 genre savvy face or '10 Kanye heel), and he was a very good, bordering on great, worker for a big man his last few years. Obviously, he's lost a step (maybe he'll get it back), and his booking so far has been awful, but there's a reason the guy was so over in his prime, and will likely be very over as a heel in a few weeks or months when they feud him with Bryan proper.

He's also great at staying in character and thinking on his feet (the famous "I hate you too!" moment).

    ReplyDelete
  73. I wouldn't be shocked if Lesnar enters- and wins- the Chamber Match. Lesnar vs. Batista at Mania is exactly the kind of thing I'm sure WWE thinks we want to see. And, in my case at least, they're mostly right… so long as they give Bryan another high profile match (HBK or Taker, ideally, though I'd settle for HHH or Cena).

    ReplyDelete
  74. And, while he was in pretty crappy ring shape, it's mostly not his fault.

    ReplyDelete
  75. There's only two slots left. Orton, Bryan, Sheamus, Cena.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I think Ambrose and Reigns getting the two spots as part of the Shield breakup angle is probable; like when Batista and HHH were in the same Chamber and there was a bunch of tension (though the split was ultimately a few months later).

    ReplyDelete
  77. Yeah it's surprising no mention of CM Punk. Everyone is so swept up in the Daniel Bryan thing CM Punk is yesterdays news and forgotten.

The Shield vs The Wyatts seems likely, but seeing as there are two spots left in the Elimination Chamber and, in fairness, The Shield missing out like that is pretty rough. Has anyone considered the possibility of The Shield complaining next Raw, then Triple H answering with, a triple threat match for the last two spots?

Ambrose and Rollins turn on Reigns and eliminate him, making them the final 2 members of Elimination Chamber. Come Elimination Chamber Reigns somehow gets Ambrose and Rollins eliminated. Reigns turns face, and gets Ambrose one on one at Wrestlemania. Reigns takes out Ambrose and Rollins (who of course constantly interferes), a new third member of the shield debuts, takes out Reigns, Ambrose wins. Then a fued of Reigns vs The Shield with the new third member continues till Reigns gets a win and moves on to bigger and better things.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I can see the novelty appeal in it. They haven't had a significant match before (in WWE... they probably wrestled in OVW tho, right?), and they're both big, jacked up, physically intimidating dudes.

My issue is... what's the feud? What's the story and the build? Two dudes on part time contracts fight cause they're big and want the title (both of whom were apparently quite happy not having the title or even being around until 2 weeks ago)?

As much as I think Batista/Orton is a bad idea for the title right now, because the fans so clearly reject anything that isn't Bryan, that's at least a feud with some meat on it as far as issues and history between the combatants. Would anybody really be repelled by that match if it was 4 matches down the card, not for the title, and Bryan was in the title picture?

Which is kinda why I'd be ok with Orton/Batista/Bryan as a triple threat title match. You have 3 guys, each of which has some history with at least one other, and Batista and Orton, hated as they are for representing the WWE forcing people down the fans throats, are still credible threats, so Bryan overcoming them both would likely be the kind of win the fans are looking for.

Plus I think Brock/Taker is pretty set at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  79. It kind of sucks that Rollins, arguably the most talented of the three, is the odd one out here. He doesn't have the immediate charisma that the other two do, so I guess it makes sense.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Have I just never noticed it before or is Seth Rollins dressing like the Black Scorpion a new thing?

    ReplyDelete
  81. Is anybody else somewhat concerned about The Shield breaking up?

My issue is simply this... when I think about the factions that have split up with great success, where the members go on and succeed individually in different roles, they all had one thing in common:

All the members (or all the significant members) of the faction have very clear, distinct characters and personalities that they could carry over into their singles career BEFORE the break.

When I think of the factions that failed to produce great singles success after the fact, there are many great factions that had a personality/gimmick as an ENTITY, but within that entity there was no individual characters. Then WWE tried to form new characters for the newly freed solo projects, and they fell flat, cause all the history with the former faction essentially became meaningless.

Of the three guys, what are there personalities? Somewhat creepy/slimey Swat guy, big/stoic swat guy, and multicolored hair swat guy?

    ReplyDelete
  82. Rollins is weird and inconsistent about all the non-wrestling stuff. He's a REALLY great writer (his Project 161 blog is proof enough of that), but when he has to give any sort of extended promo it's usually flat or awkward. But then he'll have a really good moment on the mic, like at the Rumble punctuating the Shield promo.

    ReplyDelete
  83. The reason Batista got over in 2005 was the same reason Orton got over in 2004. Evolution did such an efficient job castrating and burying faces, that fans desperate to cheer for a winner, picked the guy that seemed a good bet to grow into that next big face role.

First it was Orton... and then they botched his face turn, had him lost the title in a month, then lose repeatedly to HHH... and amazingly, when he lost heat, they learned from their mistake and kept Batista strong. The literally did the OPPOSITE, putting him over HHH three times in a row. HHH did for Batista essentially what Foley did for HHH in that regard.

Once Batista moved to Smackdown the only real heat he had was a contact high. Feuding with the Undertaker, feuding with an unbelievably over, slimey Edge heel, etc.

Now, the heel character that feuded with Cena was GREAT. That was all on Batista and it's a shame he didn't have more time with that gimmick.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I think that gimmick's coming back soon enough.

And for my money, I really liked Batista's feud with Eddie, with Batista just being one step too clever for Eddie's usual bullshit. The friendship/competition dynamic they had was really solid, IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Hey, when is Randy Orton most enjoyable? When he's not on your tv.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Shawn Michaels did ok despite not really having a character until the Rockers breakup.

Janetty was doing fine, too, until his bad decisions outside of the ring derailed his career.

Both the Hardy Boyz did ok, as did Edge & Christian, and in both those cases the personalities were pretty interchangeable pre-breakup.

Of course, those are all 2 person teams. Cant' think of a good 3 person one, unless you wanna count Lita in the Hardyz.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I legitimately do not understand why Alberto Del Rio has gotten any sort of push. He's a decent technical wrestler, but is so utterly fucking BORING that he'd death to absolutely every segment he's a part of. He doesn't even feel like a proper main eventer, despite their repeated attempts at pushing him there. He feels like an out-of-place midcarder on Rick "The Model" Martel's level rather than anyone near the top.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Nah. When they allow him to be 2009 style psychotic, violent, dangerous, slow-walking, head-punting, beat anybody that gets in his way Orton, then that's when he's most enjoyable.

Orton will never be mistaken for a versatile performer. But as most workers have said over and over, the best characters are the real person turned up to 11.

And by all accounts, Orton is a moody, loner asshole with anger management issues, so I'm not shocked at all that that's the character that comes through best for him on TV. When they let him be that guy, he can be a downright magnetic as the heel-leaning-tweener.

Should he be holding the title right now? No. What the should do is bust him down the card a bit, free him from this Authority BS, put him back in the old viper character, let him actually stay there, consistently, with no wavering to chickenshit heel bullshit, and let fans start clamoring to see that Orton again. Which they probably will, cause they'e responded positively to every single flash of that character they've seen since a poorly thought-out face turn robbed them of it.

    ReplyDelete
  89. I missed the show and haven't watched on DVR yet. Did HHH really say "Aw, did someone not get what they wanted?" If so that's pretty fucking funny

    ReplyDelete
  90. He has no character. Like... not even an attempt at one.

It's as if we're supposed to hate him because he's rich and mexican...which maybe people would, if he actually ever was pompous and obnoxious about that fact. But he's not. He says nothing of note, he does nothing of note, he's just boring.

I always felt that Del Rio actually could have taken Orton's place as the corporate champion. A rich, good looking guy with the veneer of privileged and propriety makes more sense as a corporate champ than a violent psychotic that annihilated the dude making the selection and his family.

Plus, he's latin american and if they wanted to, they could push (however subtley they choose) that they chose him in part to appeal to international audiences.,, which is just an extra layer of patronization.

    ReplyDelete

Roman Reigns is asskicking guy and he's probably the only one they care about. "Asskicking guy" is a perfectly suitable wrestling character. Maybe they take more of an interest in Ambrose if Punk leaves since they're similiar in some ways. Rollins is destined to be a cross between Dolph Ziggler and Kanyon no matter how awesome he is in the ring.

    ReplyDelete
  96. ARRRRGH THE BARBARIANJanuary 28, 2014 at 2:10 AM

Well, by spazzing out after the show, he kinda brought it on himself. That's one thing Cena gets, if he is gonna troll, he's gonna troll in a lighthearted manner and not let it show that people got to him.

Flipping a double bird on the way out... on the other hand.

    ReplyDelete
  97. True, 'asskicking guy' works pretty damn well if you have the look to back it up, which Reigns certainly does.

I can just see them all being really boring and undefined once the Shield gimmick that binds them together falls away. There has to be some kind of hook, and beyond the hook, some kind of actual character, and I just don't see it with any of them independent of the gimmick right now.

    ReplyDelete
  98. How awesome would it be if they did an entire show where Brock just interferes and F5s someone in every segment.

  99. ARRRRGH THE BARBARIANJanuary 28, 2014 at 2:17 AM

I'll settle for him beating the Miz stupid every week until he gets what he wants. He never gets what he wants.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Yeah, I kinda thought that was brilliant. Batista knows he's better off if he becomes a heel sooner rather than later, and going with the Yes-pose + double bird after flipping off a fan guarantees it.

Of course, if he's still face in three weeks or so, I'm just wrong and he did, in fact, spaz out. Historically's he decent at improv/dealing with the crowd ("I hate you too!") and pretty wise to the business, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now.

    ReplyDelete
  101. HHH can be a great condescending dick. I wish he'd just go all the way with that if he's gonna be, you know, a heel.

    ReplyDelete
  102. ARRRRGH THE BARBARIANJanuary 28, 2014 at 2:23 AM

They can't have a heel if they're using him for crossover promotion. I mean he got retconned on his return worse than Punk did this year. At least Heyman was still inexplicably hanging around after he magically turned face.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Another way to set that up is for Lesnar to do 2-3 beatdowns, then Heyman says at some point, "If you won't give my client what he wants, he's going to take the thing you cherish even more than the title -- The Streak."

It was a great angle, his main problem was that they realized they liked Cena better and B-showed him. Ironically I don't think he would have gotten the negative reception that Cena got against the guys they immediately programmed him with when they switch them.

Smackdown is just devoid of anything interesting and Batista had Smackdown stink all over him for years afterwards, complete with the roster being so thin he was in a title match every month, whether he was the champion or not. I mean, when Trips did his stint on Smackdown with the WWE Championship, does anyone remember what he did?

    ReplyDelete
  107. Didn't they basically do that in 1998 on an episode of Raw, where Undertaker and Kane interrupted every match and chokeslammed people after Vince Mcmahon called them pussies?

    ReplyDelete
  108. I remember Kane doing something like that. It'd be so great if they let Brock do it

    ReplyDelete
  109. I guess. I'm with Andy when he said a couple weeks ago, why not do this for somebody that isn't a part-timer?

Pushing a guy as an unstoppable, violent, dangerous man has never, ever failed to get somebody over in wrestling. They could apply what they're doing now to Brock to everybody from Orton to Bryan to Fandango, and they could get the same benefit.

In any case, I already said in a previous comment, I think they ARE going to do this for awhile. I think the 'choice' that Brock and Heyman are giving the Authority is a red herring. They're not going to put Brock in the EC, and they're not going to have him face Batista, because they want both Batista and Brock going into WM strong.

So I think Brock basically comes out every week, gives the Authority the same basic choices, they keep ignoring him, and he keeps hurting people until finally the Undertaker has seen enough and interrupts one of his beat-downs to start the WM feud.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Not saying you but the "only do this with full time guys" arguement is such a typical fallback smart fan answer to me. Sure you could have Orton or whomever do it but it wouldn't be as effective as having a huge beast former mma champ doing it.

    ReplyDelete
  111. I said in the Open Mic intro that it seemed like we were farther away from Punk-HHH and naturally someone within 10 minutes makes some smart ass comment about Punk interacting with the NAO, etc etc. but it feels like his program is less vs. HHH and more vs. The Authority as a whole and right now he's being paired with Kane and that might extend past February. Sucks for a guy that clearly wanted that "show stealing" slot at Wrestlemania.

But I am holding out hope that the HBK-Punk interaction from a few weeks back will rear his ugly head again and maybe he will give us one more match at WM. A girl can dream.

    ReplyDelete
  112. That's true, but it doesn't change the fact that you're basically just opting to put 100% behind a short-term guy that only does a few events instead of building your future with guys that you could potentially make money off of at every house show and PPV from now till they retire.

As a build for mania, I see why you use Brock. But there's no reason the same kind of actions can't be used to great effect to build credibility for other workers.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Can't speak for LA, but i'll be there next week. Nebraska doesn't get a lot of stuff, so the crowds are normally pretty hot, actually.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Yes, they did. I believe that was one of those rare Saturday night Raws. My friends and I labeled it the Night of a Thousand Chokeslams and referenced it often.

    ReplyDelete
  115. But you're assuming there is a guy on the roster they could do this with. Who on the roster would really be effective as a legit destructive monster? Maybe Reigns

    ReplyDelete
  116. Just some mish mash of feuds with Jeff Hardy and Edge...

    ReplyDelete
  117. Well the nice thing about Pro wrestling is that you can turn anybody you want into a monster, they don't actually have to be the biggest guy to convince the audience they're violent, dangerous and credible.

They could do it with pretty much any heel or face they wanted to.

    Reigns is a good one.

Certainly they could do it with Orton, since they've done that with him before (2009) to great effect.

They could do it with CM Punk or Daniel Bryan if they wanted to, as men pushed too far by the hubris of the Authority.

They could do it with the Wyatts.

They could do it with anybody, it would work well.

    ReplyDelete
  118. I fundamentally disagree with you here. The ass kicking monster is a great no frills gimmick but it won't work for everyone. If you gave it to a guy like Del Rio it comes off as kinda corny and the fans won't respond or will probably shit on it. SSomeone has to be a beast in the ring, like benoit, or just a huge dude, like Brock or Goldberg.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Fair enough. Oh, and they could also turn Sheamus heel and do the same thing with him... if you want a big guy doing it.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Some of you guys really are helpless. 24 hours removed from SMARKageddon and the rage of the internet has turned into fantasy booking ways for Daniel Bryan to main event Wrestlemania. Batista didn't near the negative reaction some of you heard. At this point I think some of you are hearing/seeing what you want anything to convince you that the hero of smarks across the world will finally get his due.

You're all even saying it. Sheamus is going to turn on him at EC setting up a match that Sheamus could possibly win at Wrestlemania. He's not facing Batista, he's not facing Orton, there is no triple threat, and he's most likely not even facing Triple H. I suspect they were having problems with the audio since there was a pause before Daniel even came out. Even if not the staredown doesn't not equal Triple H jobbing for Daniel Bryan.

Its just sad because even though once again the WWE is TELLING you guys "we're not putting the title on Daniel Bryan" you're repeating the SAME thing you just did at the Royal Rumble. You're taking what the WWE is giving you and instead of accepting it at face value...as if the WWE is capable of anything subtle these days. You immediately start doing Batista heel turns and three way dances for the main event at Elimination Chamber. Batista is hitting a Batista Bomb on Orton to walk out of Wrestlemania champion and he stays champion until SummerSlam due to the movie coming out.

The best you can hope for is a midcard victory for Daniel Bryan and even that isn't a sure thing. He's not facing Taker, he's not facing HBK, he's not facing Triple H, no Brock, no Batista, no three way dances. He's facing Sheamus who will most likely be Triple H's corporate stooge and he MIGHT get that victory if Vince is feeling generous that night.

Whats really cute is some of you before your fantasy booking say if they wanted to put DB in the title match (they don't) they could have him win the EC (he won't). Its like when you're team is down by two touchdowns in the fourth quater. You tell yourself "we're done its over" but you don't MEAN that. Deep down you're using reverse psychology on the world hoping it works. It won't work and anyone who gives even a shred of hope for DB doing anything but facing Sheamus at Wrestlemania is wasting their time.

    ReplyDelete
  121. I've never understood Vince or whomever in the company's hard-on for Kid Rock. That being said, they used to play a video before live events that was their history that touched on every major superstar to a Kid Rock song. Wouldn't mind them bringing that back.

Wow. Honestly, all you have to do is watch the Stone Cold Desire video (which is set to Creed, unfortunately), to realize that all the people comparing the reactions Bryan is getting to the ones Stone Cold got are insane.

On the shittiest show, in front of the coldest crowd on the planet, Stone Cold would still pop a crowd 100x louder than Bryan does at his most over. The raw, gutteral, emotional reaction to that guy night after night was something to behold.

    ReplyDelete
  131. How about everybody stops being a smug asshole about their genius predictions and incredible insight. We're all watching a show about men in their underwear here, no need to get all self-important about it.

    ReplyDelete
  136. "If it looks good, you'll see it. If it sounds good, you'll hear it. If it's marketed right, buy it. But if it isn't the guy Vince wants to push, fuck you."

    ReplyDelete
  138. Looks like a regular ban isn't gonna cut it with you. IP ban coming soon.

    ReplyDelete
  139. I'm a little disappointed that people think it is a good idea for Daniel Bryan to win the belt at EC. People don't talk about someone's "Elimination Chamber Moments" if I recall.

That being said, we are probably getting Sheamus/Bryan at Mania. It sucks, but it's true.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Still having Kid Rock do PPV themes fits with the logic of a company that still has Big Show, Batista and the Outlaws as part of the card.

    ReplyDelete
  141. "after Vince Mcmahon called them pussies" LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  142. "though he wasn't the primary focus of the main event..."

Wait, what? Cena spent the majority of the match playing Ricky Morton and working the crowd into a frenzy for the hot tag to Bryan. How was he not the focus of the match?

    ReplyDelete
  143. Ya know...I'll just go ahead and admit I have no idea what is and is not in their plans for Bryan right now. I have a hard time believing they *wanted* to get that Rumble response, but then that opening segment played off of that so perfectly and seamlessly it's also hard to believe that they just audibled to it yesterday as well.

    ReplyDelete
  144. I don't see how they build heat for Punk/Trips. Storyline wise everyone wants it to be Bryan who puts Trips in his place, so unless DBry is in the title match instead I'd say that's another pairing that the crowd is going to shit on.

    ReplyDelete
  145. He pretty much did, at least last night.

    ReplyDelete
  146. I have good memories of high school listening to Devil Without a Cause rolling around getting into all kinds of shit. This was 1999.

    ReplyDelete
  147. One of my favorite Austin matches was Vs. The Rock the night after Survivor Series 98'. The crowd is near a riot and someone is actually getting carried out by security 5 minutes in. The heat was just insane.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Sid did that in WCW with his Millenium (sic) Man gimmick, and everyone thought it sucked.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Yeah, originally West kind of annoyed me, but once he was replaced I really want West back on commentary.

    ReplyDelete
  150. It's not really fair to compare Bryan's pops now to Austin's pops when he was the undisputed tippy top face kicking everyone's ass and humiliating the boss on a nightly basis.

    ReplyDelete
  151. To me it looks like they're setting up the Elimination Chamber title match to be Orton, Bryan, Cena, Sheamus, Bray and Reigns. (I'm assuming Brock's contract has him only working the major-major PPVs, but if that's not the case you can take out Bray and replace him with Brock.)

That still allows The Shield break-up story to keep going, as one of the authority figures grants The Shield one spot in the EC title match, but they have to decide it amongst themselves. That either leads to a triple-threat match, or they do some kind of draw-straws thing. Either way, after Reigns gets the spot Ambrose can't hide his jealousy, while Rollins tries to play peacekeeper. Then at EC, one or both of the other Shield members costs Reigns the match. Whether it's done accidentally or on purpose impacts how soon we get the official break-up.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Ambrose can definitely be a breakout singles star as a heel. He has too much personality and is too good at the nuances of storytelling. Not to go too far with it, but he's like a modern-day Jake Roberts in that respect.
Somebody posted a few months ago that Rollins could be a Jeff Hardy-type babyface, which I agreed with, but either way I think he's going to gravitate toward another tag team when/if The Shield breaks up.

    ReplyDelete
  153. Well winning the belt wouldn't have to be *the* moment, exactly. If you wanted to keep the dramatic build you could, say, have Batista come out and demolish him right after the match to ruin it, then play the "everyone knows Bryan can't beat Batista" game in the run up to Mania.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Crowd wouldn't shit on a CM Punk match unless they just want to see him be an awesome heel again. But I agree there's no way to build heat for it right now. Unfortunately he's stuck working with someone that will barely sell for him. Punk is the wrong guy at the wrong time.

    ReplyDelete

  156. Strange random exchange during last night's show.

Woods is talking about going through his dissertation for his Ph.D

JBL: what are you getting a Ph.D in?

    Woods: Educational psychology

JBL: what are you gonna do with that.

Woods: I'd like to teach and work with autistic children.

    JBL: ummm...good for you.

It wasn't anything crazy other than I could tell JBL was trying to tee up a joke there and got completely shut down by Woods' answer.

    ReplyDelete
  157. The lack of Ricardo really destroys his character because he's supposed to be a little over the top. I remember his heel promo the night after winning the strap back from Dolph and it's good stuff. He's got some skills but right now he's just sort of there. His weird threats to Batista and their horrible 15 second encounter at the a Rumble made no sense.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Even stranger about asking - "what are you gonna do with that?" : the guy already has a job. You know, being a professional wrestler.

In real life I can see why a guy would want to have a second career in case pro wrestling doesn't work out, but in kayfabe being a WWE superstar is the highest rung of human achievement....

    ReplyDelete
  159. If they're stuck in the past with who they want on top as wrestlers, it makes sense they'd be stuck in the past musically too.

All joking aside, Kid Rock seems like a guy who likes wrestling and won't be embarrassed to be there.

    ReplyDelete
  163. Okay, so we have Orton, Bryan, Cena, and Sheamus in the Chamber. Who gets the fifth and final spot? Lesnar?

Now, if they're REALLY going to run Bryan v. Sheamus at WM (retch), then something has to happen in the chamber to give those two an issue with neither winning the title. Logically, then, either Orton or Lesnar goes over. Lesnar v. Batista for the title at WM sounds WAY better than Orton v. Batista.

So that leaves Cena to face off with the Wyatts somehow. What then does Orton do for WM?

That said, the writer/comedian in me...

Brogue kick and Sheamus wins in 18 seconds again. It's just. It's the most logical and funny joke I can think of.

    ReplyDelete
  171. I disagree. of course Del Rios "monster push" wouldn't work with anybody. but if they had Del Rio put several babyfaces on the shelf with kicks to the head I believe he would have been over as a believable "threat" in no time.

  174. I think so. One thing they do is try to brag on the guys with college educations. They mention Dolph's accounting degree from Kent State often. JR would always mention the guys that had college degrees.

Of course Woods could never be a heel now. He's probably up on the main roster because he can be part of their various campaigns aimed for kids.

  178. UT already beat Orton at WM XXI - no one wants to see that match again. But you bring up a good question: if, based on the scenario above, we get Lesnar v. Batista for the title, Bryan v. Sheamus and Cena v. Wyatt, we would almost have to have UT v. Orton. Which would suck.

So, let's say Orton goes over at EC, then you set up Lesnar v. UT and Orton v. Batista (going like third from the top), along with Bryan v. Sheamus, Cena v. Wyatt and Punk v. HHH.

    ReplyDelete
  179. Your_Favourite_LoserJanuary 28, 2014 at 8:29 AM

the long sleeves? he's been doing it off and on for a few weeks. thats one thing i always liked about them when they debuted: they had a running theme but were different enough. rollins did the black shirt with short sleeves under the vest, ambrose did the white shirt sleeveless under the vest, and reigns did just the vest

  181. There's two more spots. Orton is the champion and doesn't count towards one of the five "challenger" spots.

  183. Well, if Zanatude's mom isn't a fan, I'm just not sure why I even wrote the article.

    ReplyDelete
  184. You're right - my bad.

Okay, we have Orton, Bryan, Sheamus and Cena. Lesnar almost has to be in the match. Does the last spot then go to a main event level guy like Punk, or to someone just below main event status, like Christian or Big E? It can't be Batista since he has the WM shot and is being set up to murder Del Rio at EC. I suppose it could be Reigns but it looks more likely that we're getting a Shield v. Wyatts 6-man tag to start the Reigns face turn.

    ReplyDelete
  185. I think I remember reading somewhere a year ago that Brock was working Rumble to Mania.

    ReplyDelete
  186. I think Punk needs to be fighting Kane at Elimination Chamber, and we really should have a Shield vs. Wyatts match at the PPV, too.

So, the Main Event players in the Chamber should be Orton, Bryan, Cena, Sheamus, Lesnar and probably Show (if he's not injured) or Mark Henry (same qualifier). Best case scenario? You throw Taker in to pop a buyrate and set up WrestleMania.

    ReplyDelete
  187. Before the autistic children answer, there was definitely an R-Truth/Little Jimmy joke coming.

  188. Eddie Guerrero won the WWE Title in a great match against BROCK LESNAR at the February 2004 No Way Out pay-per-view, which led to his awesome match with Kurt Angle at Mania.

Sometimes you need to spread the moments out over a number of months.

    ReplyDelete
  189. Guys, c'mon, just a week ago most people on the blog would've been over the moon for Bryan winning the title at a damn house show. If he wins at No Way Out, defeating five other main event caliber men (well, close to main event, some), then that will be fantastic, in my opinion!

    ReplyDelete
  195. You'll stop worrying when Roman Reigns comes in on a horse, war paint on his face, and rapes the first woman he sees. Then slits Fandango's throat because the first woman he rapes is most likely Summer Rae.

This will be the birth of DOTHRAKI HORSE LORD ROMAN REIGNS.

    ReplyDelete
  196. Batista in ring was NEVER bordering on great. He was only as good as the people he was in the ring with.

    ReplyDelete
  197. I think Batista was on Raw at that point.

    ReplyDelete
  198. Eh, I classified it as "for a big man" and I'll stand by that. Vader, Bam Bam, Brock, and latter day Taker are the only guys I can think of his size or bigger that are probably better than he is. He's miles better than Nash (who, when motivated, wasn't bad himself), Sid, Kane, Big Show, Mark Henry, Yoko, Ryback, Mason Ryan, Ahmed Johnson, Roided Chris Masters, Hulk, Warrior, etc.

That said, I concede that I can't think of a match of the top of my head where he carried a crap worker to an excellent match. He's not HBK or Eddie, but he's about as good as big guys gets.
