Why Wont the WWE Acknowledge CM Punk on TV?

Vince McMahon personally likes Punk and hopes to bring him back. Also, Punk is #2 in merchandise sales and the belief is that if they acknowledge that he is gone, his sales will drop dramatically.

Developmental Talent Being Taught a Specific Style

Currently in developmental, they are teaching for the babyfaces to get one comeback spot built around trademark spots and only use their finishing move for the win

  1. Back in the olden days, it's interesting to note that the better workers seemed to go out of their way to create finishes that DIDN'T involve the use of a finisher. Bret Hart, for instance, won very few of his big matches via the Sharpshooter....all three KOTR 93 bouts, WM11 over Backlund, the Dec. 95 match against the Bulldog, Survivor Series 96 over Austin, and all of his WWE title wins (save the first over Flair).

  2. Off topic, but the new Disqus update sucks

    ReplyDelete
  3. I have to refresh and it is a pain in the ass.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Yeah it seems silly to insist there's only one way for a babyface to win a match, but it is also important for the finisher to be protected for the most part.

One thing I would personally implement, which I realise won't be entirely possible, is for every member of the roster to have a finishing move and a submission hold. This allows a bit more spice and unpredictability to a match. It definitely helps main eventers like Cena, Punk and Jericho.

One spot I've always loved in big time tag matches in Japan, that I can't remember ever being used in the WWE is where one guy is trapped in a submission hold and the partner traps their other opponent in his submission hold to prevent it being broken.

  5. Threadjack-vince sr's limo driver being in the wwe hof doesn't look so bad after you find out that the Cleveland cavaliers retired Austin Carr's jersey.

    ReplyDelete
  6. From this day on, we shall call you "Switzerland". :)

    ReplyDelete
  7. Vince does love himself a confrontational asshole. This will probably help punks career in the long run.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Same here its brutal. Checked on my phone too and mobile disqus is doing the same

    ReplyDelete
  9. I sometimes wondered if that was the point of the Kiss My Ass club.

For example. There is no universe in which Punk would agree to that.
So whom does Vince respect more?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Finishing moves have their place (obviously) but some of the greatest matches ever didn't end with "turn to hard camera, finisher". Steamboat/Savage for example, or Bret/Diesel for another. Sometimes the unexpected can be just as good.

    ReplyDelete
  11. As long as I don't have to watch a crappy TNT show about Robin Hood to catch the ending to Hogan-Giant...

    ReplyDelete
  12. I don't know if it's a shoot or an elaborate work at this point, and I'm usually not one for fantasy booking, but all I know is that if Punk is coming back, they gotta do this:

If Bryan finally gets his title shot, they need to book a no-DQ, ref bump, something, so there can be a massive beat down on him involving HHH, Kane, Orton, whoever. Just when they are about to finish him off for good, Cult of Personality hits. The place would fucking explode.

    ReplyDelete
  13. What's next, the T'Wolves retiring Tom Gugliotta's jersey?

    ReplyDelete
  14. "Watch Robin Hood on TNT to see parts of the match spread over an hour!"

    ReplyDelete
  15. George Zimmerman is fighting DMX...What. The. Fuck?

I like the idea of wwe limiting the amount of finishers are in a match but hate the idea of a basic template and babyface comeback spots

    ReplyDelete
  16. Knicks giving Jerome James a statue

    ReplyDelete
  17. I so can see them pulling that shit on a regular basis. Right up until they finally move RAW to the network only.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I hate long heat segments. I think each comeback spot should be a couple of moves longer so the match looks more even. It doesn't make sense for the heel to beat on the face for 90% of the match then get hit with one or two moves and pretend like the damage amount is equal.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Apparently Zimmerman is gonna box or mma type fight DMX

    ReplyDelete
  20. Ooh, seems to have reverted to normal.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Lol at least googs had 2 good seasons and got busted for steroids pre baseball hr explosions.

Carr has to be the worst player in any sport to get his Jersey retired.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Would you have rather seen Zimmerman face off against Sandman?

    ReplyDelete
  23. I have a bad feeling Zimmerman is going to get hurt pretty bad in that fight.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Lol wow that's got to be one of the craziest things I've ever heard of. I'll watch though.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Agreed. I live in FL so followed the trial pretty closely. They brought in his mma coach in for a pretrial deposition and he called george and "fat marshmallow. " said he was an atrocious student

    ReplyDelete
  26. They should go all the way and just give everyone the same finish.

    ReplyDelete
  27. So, how long do you suppose the line was of guys that wanted to fight him?

    ReplyDelete
  28. No doubt. Could possibly replace Jose Canseco sending his twin brother in his place as my favorite celebrity fighting moment.

    ReplyDelete
  29. 15/3/3 with a 44% fg. 80%ft. He played most of his career with no 3pt line. I think per is bullshit but if you care about that it was 15.0. His WS/48 is.080 also

    ReplyDelete
  30. Hard to top Ozzie the evil twin

    ReplyDelete
  31. Given the amount of people who lined up to fight him when the fight was announced, I can't imagine why Zimmerman would even agree. I'd be worried about someone going too far.

    ReplyDelete
  32. No buys! The fans have decided who the will and will not cheer for. It doesn't matter what he says and does, he will get cheered.

    ReplyDelete
  33. spinebusters.....wait that's only for main eventers

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think he may be oblivious to how much he is hated.

    ReplyDelete
  35. It would have been hilarious if they booked like Bruce Smith or a legit huge former athlete to fight him

    ReplyDelete
  36. Vince should sign him amd put him in a WM match with Zeb

    ReplyDelete
  37. Wouldn't surprise me at all, actually, given the way he carried himself during his 15 minutes.

    ReplyDelete
  38. My downvote was for the BS that WCW pulled like this. I laughed at the post though.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Mr. Perfect/Bret Hart KOTR 93 comes to mind. When I first saw it the finish looked botched, like the ref counted three when he wasn't supposed to. Awesome match and finish

    ReplyDelete
  40. Headed that way it seems.

    ReplyDelete
  41. That's going to be hilarious.

    ReplyDelete
  42. 'Fuck this. I was in Vietnam and worked Puerto Rico as a heel. I'm done' - Dutch

    ReplyDelete
  43. I dare say I'm more old school than you, Scott. I learned typing in high school. I also had a TRS-80 in high school. If I can learn to switch to single space, so can you.

  44. Play other person's music into a rollup. Works every time.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Attitude Adjustments for everyone!

    ReplyDelete
  46. He's Mr. Cavalier though...

    ReplyDelete
  47. In WCW's defense, wasn't it Turner who forced them to do that?

    ReplyDelete
  48. "How Did Extreme Rules End Up In New Jersey?"

Mike Johnson is overthinking the question...the Super Bowl was in NJ this year, so sun will cease to rise and set unless Michael Cole can, at least once this year, say the WWE is broadcasting from the home of this year's Super Bowl

    ReplyDelete
  49. Extreme Rules 10 minutes down the road, eh...innnnnnnteresting, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  50. which was the Raw when Kane kept coming down during every almost match and chokeslamming anyone in the ring?

    ReplyDelete
  51. the Backlash 2000 finish? Yeah, that would be fun. Do it in front of any smarky crowd and it would be a pop for the ages. (Of course, then it needs to end with Punk and new champion Bryan staring each down and Punk gesturing to the belt.)

    ReplyDelete
  52. Did You Know: More people attended Extreme Rules than attended a football game Super Bowl weekend!*

(*between the New Jesey Revolution and the Columbus Lions).

    ReplyDelete
  53. DMX will pull out a gun at the opening bell and shoot Zimmerman and claim he was Standing His Ground. Thats my call.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I loved this as a youngster. They should do it with Brock now. Just have him interfere and F5 someone in every segment.

    ReplyDelete
  55. My first thought when the Punk news hit and I was hoping it was a work.
Doing this finish to close the Elimination Chamber would be the perfect way to go into the Network launch and Wrestlemania hype.

    Not likely, but fingers crossed...

    ReplyDelete
  56. This would be pretty awesome. IF it's a work im hoping we get back heel Punk. Do something like this and tease the save but next have him turn on Bryan. Have him cut a scathing promo in the fans about how he worked through injuries and busted his ass for them but they ignored him. Heel punk = top wwe character of the past few years.

    ReplyDelete
  57. i didn't mention it in my original post, but it also crossed my mind to have Punk hit the ring, clear the authority out and then kick Bryan in the head, costing him the title. It would be a massive swerve and the biggest heel turn in years.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I'm a former newspaper editor, still a freelancer writer, and double spacing hurts my eyes. I'd love to have all of the time I've spent removing one space after a sentence, whether from another writer or a sports coach who has emailed me, back.

    ReplyDelete
  59. That would have been the logical conclusion to Lesnar and Heyman's threat from a couple of weeks back.

    ReplyDelete
  60. He was serviceable. Still kinda boggles my mind he was the centerpiece of the webber trade. Webbers career in hindsight I think is disappointing overall but he looked like a potential all time great for a few years. You get back TOM GUGLIOTTA as the centerpiece for him? Failure by Nellie in my book

    ReplyDelete
  61. Exactly. IF they're going Lesnar/Taker, just have Lesnar fuck people up in this fashion until only Taker can stop him.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Sami Zayne debuts his hacker gimmick on Raw on 2/24 and ends the show by bringing down the WWE Network servers.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Instead it's, "Sorry Brock, creative has nothing for you."

    ReplyDelete
  64. I heard he was chosen out of 15,000 volunteers.

    ReplyDelete
  65. More people attend Raw each year than the Super Bowl, World Series, Stanley Cup and NBA Finals combined!!

    ReplyDelete
  66. They need to have a one hour, iron match between Bryan/punk on one of the raws one day...

    ReplyDelete
  67. I could hear complaints online about "Oh great, the part timer is burying every full time guy on the roster, just to build him up to job to another part timer! F*CK WWE!!!"

    ReplyDelete
  68. Oh, I didn't actually watch the video when people were talking about it and I didn't know anyone else on Earth had that name spelled that way. My bad.

    ReplyDelete
  69. The hacker character's name is Soloman Crowe, but the guy worked the indies as Sami Callahan.

    ReplyDelete
  70. The heat would be incredible absolutely incredible. They'd have to be careful bc the crowd is gonna want to cheer him if he ever comes back. Bryans the only guy I think over enough as a face to get a returning punk heel heat

    ReplyDelete
  71. Wrestling must be better than real sports!

    ReplyDelete
  72. I dunno, he's 1-0 so far.

    ReplyDelete
  73. No way Vince is that up to date, Zimmerman will be hosting Raw in 2 years though.

    ReplyDelete
  74. He's still trying to get OJ to host to capitalize on that Bronco chase thingy

    ReplyDelete
  75. What did Rock say? I don't recall.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I'll never doubt Punks ability to get heel heat but I literally think 50% of the crowd would cheer this line of thought

    ReplyDelete
  77. Wait until Solomon Crowe and Kalisto debut. They will definitely liven things up a bit.

I have no idea how Solomon Crowe will work out. As Sami Callahan, he was stiff as Hell and both beat the tar out of people and had it beat out of him.

Kalisto is basically everything they wanted Sin Cara to be. It's going to be interesting to see if he's still allowed to do his gymnastics or if the WWE will ground him.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Wasn't that the infamous "Get the F out" segment?

    ReplyDelete
  79. It would be smart to have him do it during a shield match and have Reigns be the only one who stands his ground and have them go nose to nose before Rollins and Ambrose pull him away. Crowd would apeshit

    ReplyDelete
  80. Threadjack: After the talk in the Update thread yesterday about the WBF, The Best of Vince :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgLON5llNBs

  81. He said even as a senior citizen, he'll still go out to the ring with his Walker and say *old man voice* "urrr, just bring it!!"

    ReplyDelete
  82. So who's the guy that decides to become a huge star by completely ignoring these rules the first chance he gets on a big stage?

Because that's the only good that will come of it.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Didn't a pretty good Austin/Hart match end that way once? Million Dollar Dream, climb corner, flip over into pin, 1-2-3. Or was that DiBiase/Hart, once upon a time?

    ReplyDelete
  84. Your_Favourite_LoserFebruary 6, 2014 at 12:23 PM

    whoa whoa whoa...

edge and beth phoenix are together? did i miss this or just forget it?

    http://www.411mania.com/wrestling/news/312355/Edge-and-Beth-Phoenix-Welcome-Their-First-Child.htm

    ReplyDelete
  85. Yeah, that match lasted over sixty minutes... and was about as good as a Hogan/Giant match going that long could be.

(NOTE: Match did not actually last that long, editing tried to be WCW's friend, and the match stunk to high heaven.)

    ReplyDelete
  86. this.

Jerry Lawler (as Punk is about to hit the top rope elbow), in anticipation: "how many guys has Punk put away with this?" .... uh... afaik only one.

and that's a huge problem: I don't expect guys being pinned after a bodyslam. but the fact the Randy Orton has never pinned anyone after the draping ddt is ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Screw a RAW. Hold that off for a PPV.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Austin/Hart at Survivor Series ended that way. Which allowed Rock/Austin to do call backs to that spot on their matches. WM 17 I think, Austin tried the MDD and Rocky went with the Hart reversal and Austin was able to let go.

    ReplyDelete
  89. exactly. the idea that a worker can just do something "bad" an instantly all his fans boo him (or the other way around) is exactly what lead to many of the crowd reactions of the past few years ("if Rock and Cena make up after the match everybody will like it!" .... nope)

    ReplyDelete
  90. Beth Phoenix must have an amzing snatch to have landed 2 of the biggest ladies men in recent WWE memory (Punk/Edge)

    ReplyDelete
  91. Your_Favourite_LoserFebruary 6, 2014 at 12:29 PM

if she and edge ever marry, she's as good as yours, dude

    ReplyDelete
  92. I would kill myself after cuckolding Edge... there would be nothing left to accomplish from there.

    ReplyDelete
  93. That developmental blurb is frightening. Taking "cookie cutter" to a whole new level.

And they wonder why Daniel Bryan & CM Punk get over...

  96. wrestling IS real spots. well, kind of.

“We are clearly entertainment-based, but if you think about the characteristics of our brand, it’s live action, and that’s sports. We want to be compensated for a live audience, since live content is getting a very significant premium in the marketplace.”

  97. Yeah, I definitely remember the WM 17 version... and I thought I'd seen it before. Was just fuzzy enough to keep me uncertain.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Such a one trick pony. No one cares

    ReplyDelete
  99. He is a bully that virtually no one ever stands up to so when someone does he admires it because he thinks it is a good character trait... he has often said he admired HHH for having the balls to date his daughter.

    ReplyDelete
  100. "the belief is that if they acknowledge that he is gone, his sales will drop dramatically."

It isnt common knowledge to the audience that he isnt at the show?

    ReplyDelete
  101. I think you forgot.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Wow had no idea. Solid rack....thats all I have to offer. And this...http://s970.photobucket.com/user/ElizabethKocanski/media/ElizabethKocanski%20II/003.jpg.html

    And this...http://www.wwebulls.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/beth-phoenix80.jpg

    That is all.

    ReplyDelete
  103. "Not at the show" isn't the same as "Gone, Goodbye, Run Off" to the majority of fans, I bet.

For all they know, CM's just taking time off. Hell, for all we know that's what's happening, just under the guise of "he walked out".

    ReplyDelete
  104. Absolutely. Having a secondary finisher is good sense. As you said, Orton could have the draping DDT, Punk with the flying elbow, Cody Rhodes with the Disaster Kick, and so on. Give them options as to how to end the matches instead of "wait for the pose and the RKO".

    ReplyDelete
  105. I would buy into a Reigns/Brock program.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Please tell me this will be free to watch.

    ReplyDelete
  107. He probably sees a lot of himself in him.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Ok good, that was getting annoying.

    ReplyDelete
  109. If you've ever seen a one trick pony then you've seen me.

    ReplyDelete
  110. That was one of the stupidest things I can remember. And not just because the Robin Hood show sucked!

    ReplyDelete
  111. Yep, I have to do a refresh each time now.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Great. Good job.

    ReplyDelete
  113. They could run a storyline where Punk is jealous that he's no longer the internet darling or something like that. The concern is that it continues to keep the title off Bryan. You'd have to somehow get the title onto Punk so Bryan can beat him for it, but how long do you drag this chase out?

    ReplyDelete
  114. Amsterdam_Adam_CurryFebruary 6, 2014 at 1:13 PM

Have Punk attack after Bryan wins, just to get the belt the fuck off Orton.

    ReplyDelete
  115. I think that was a storyline during the Invasion. Superkick became everyone's finisher for 2 weeks or so.

    ReplyDelete
  116. AKA Luger/Savage face matches from mid-late 90's WCW. 10 minutes of getting decimated, one move (or two clotheslines from Lex) finisher, done.

    ReplyDelete
  117. I shutter at how awesome a Brock/Reigns prog would be down the road. Have them do a confrontation like this, but keep them separated until like next WM. Have Reigns go on like a monster winning streak and have Brock put over reigns at 31.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Hes sucking you into giving him a main event program right away. Luckily you've no sold all his offense so dar

    ReplyDelete
  119. I think it all depends. The thing Bryan needs the most is a title run, not just a title win. If officerfarva was in charge I'd put it on him at mania and keep it on him at least till Summerslam just to see what you have. That gives punk enough time to get the pouting out of his system. Punks bullet proof at this point so he could even chase Bryan and never win the title of the timing just doesn't fit.

    ReplyDelete
  120. If you're gonna use the guy to put someone over, make it count.

Like I said, creative can only fuck up Reigns right now. Just letting things naturally progress and he'll be a superstar.

    ReplyDelete
  121. I can't imagine being a WWE wrestling and trying to figure out how to act backstage. If you go out and do what you're told to without complaining they think you're content where you're at and don't have the drive to make it as a top guy. Or they eventually reward you for it. If you wait for them to find something to get you over you should be coming up with someone on your own. If you do that they get offended and you're fucked. If you're an asshole they respect you. Unless they don't, then they'll bury you.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Well yes. But who are you working out with? If it's HHH than you do get rewarded. If you don't work out with him, you must yodel.

    ReplyDelete
  123. I'm just waiting for the wholesale price reduction on his merch. I'll pick up a couple of shirts if they're dropped down to 25 percent.

    ReplyDelete
  124. They announced forever ago that you can get the Network at 9 am eastern on February 24th, and that the first show on the 24/7 feed would be the post show to Raw that night. It's not breaking news.

WWE's FAQ actually says live programming starts at 9am too, but that could be a mistake. They have said all along though that on demand starts that morning.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Sidejack: As a follow-up to the plight that I posted on Monday regarding my @midnight taping. Whoever said WWE would back out before CM Punk was absolutely right! Ron Funches is replacing The Miz! EVERYTHING'S COMING UP MILHOUSE!

  128. Developmental, where we beat everything that got you noticed and hired in the first place out of you.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Teaching everyone the same style is so damn stupid. It basically creates the same match template that everyone follows, so if you watch a show you are getting the same thing all the way through. No wonder ratings die off for RAW. Once you've seen 1 match you have seen them all!

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  133. I always get in on the BoD Dailies late during the week. But was the start time ever in doubt or just an in jest news post by Johnson? It's up there with WWE App instructions with things they've played out to death.

    ReplyDelete
  134. I can't wait until everybody wrestles just like John Cena. I like all my babyfaces getting boos and chants about wanting divas and refunds!

    ReplyDelete
  136. As long as i can't get your Homeland recaps and analysis, that's the ONLY trick you need my man

    ReplyDelete
  137. Somebody commented that they OnDemand portion of the network would be available the morning of 2/24, but the live channel wouldn't be available until 11:05pm.

I just need to know if I should take Monday or Tuesday off so I can take in as much of the network as possible on Day 1.

    ReplyDelete
  138. It has to be noted that two of the most over guys on the roster, Daniel Bryand and CM Punk, were primarially trained elsewhere before they cam in and spent time learning "WWE style."

    ReplyDelete
  139. I guess it depends on how much of the audience is really "smart fans," although with Arsenio Hall talking about it with Steve Austin on his talk show and major websites talking about it, probably a lot of people know he's "gone."

    ReplyDelete
  140. Edge banged Lita, first.

Punk banged Beth first (or did I imagine that?).

Edge and Punk are my heroes.

    ReplyDelete
  141. I think all you need to do to land either Punk or Edge is just to -- you know -- have a snatch.

    ReplyDelete
  142. That's right, I did use that at times, especially for one writer who returned at the end of every line, no matter how many times I told him not to. There was a series of commands I would do in that function to correct it, and I'd replace two spaces with one. Grrr.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Zimmerman will leave with a fractured skull.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Probably. Assholes like him do have an overinflated ego.

    ReplyDelete
  145. The fans don't decide who they will cheer for; Vince does!

    ReplyDelete
  146. I think they will hold off the title switch until Raw that night, then promise you can see the post-match celebration ONLY ON THE NETWORK!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  147. Yeah, there are still agents laying out the matches, though. And these guys not only being told that there's one way to work, there's also only one place to work -- WWE (remember the post a few months ago from Scott about the damn near brainwashing they were doing with their trainees?). I don't think anyone is going to go against the grain.

At least until maybe Punk gets the hugest of all comeback pops when he returns.

    ReplyDelete
  148. "If you wanna take your ball and go home, fine!" was one of the lines that made the promo.

It actually did help set up a nice little angle for the WrestleMania XIX match.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Cody won with the Disaster Kick last week.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Thou standeth corrected. I forgot all about how he trained fans to chant E-C-W. Man that guy is a genius.

Sidenote: Vince is a genius in the same vein that a guy that gets a hit 3 out of every 10 at-bats is a hall-of-famer.

    ReplyDelete
  151. The FAQ on WWE's website has consistently said since the beginning that On Demand would be available that morning, and it doesn't make much sense to not do that. If the network launches at 11:05 and you can't sign up until then, nobody is going to actually get to watch the post show since people will be too busy signing up and possibly crashing the website. The live channel not launching until 11:05 makes sense (although the FAQ now says 9am, that part might be a mistake, not sure), but it wouldn't make sense to not allow signups (and, if you're doing that, the on Demand stuff, since you'd have to have the app available for update before then anyway) earlier.

If you think about it, it's easy to control when the live channel starts (just don't put programming on until 11:05), it's much more difficult to control when the on demand can be accessed unless you're not even going to allow downloads of the apps or signups until 11:05, which is dumb for a ton of reasons. So it's your call for sure, but I'd be surprised if you couldn't access the On Demand before 11:05.

    ReplyDelete
