Question - NXT

Hey Scott,

One of my favorite things to read on the site over the last few months has been your NXT recaps.  Now that I have the WWEN and can watch it (and since it's pretty clear that they're going to ruin everything great about NXT) I want to see all the good stuff I've only read about.  Where should I go back to, and other to the Sami/Cesaro matches, what's the really "can't miss" stuff?

NXT isn't really a show with a bunch of "can't miss" moments.  Certainly the Zayn/Cesaro match was a clear highlight, but the charm of the show is more in the week-to-week continuity and building of the characters before your eyes.  There's no "must see" Tyler Breeze match, but I like watching his entrance and schtick because it feels comfortable and familiar after a while.  Mojo Rawley is terrible, but it's fun to watch him develop literally from the ground up because WWE is REALLY high on him and he's going to be pushed as a star when he comes up.  Plus the stories are simple and motivations tend to make sense and not change from week to week, so it's a really easy show to sit and watch.  Plus there's no one to protect, so finishes are clean for the most part.

I will warn you that for about the past two months now the show has been getting more and more RAW-like because they're paying attention to it now and "fixing" the "problems" that the show apparently had. So we're getting multiple authority figures, distraction finishes and other screwjob endings, wacky backstage skits and other froo-froo that I really hate seeing on Mondays and hate even more when it ruins this show.  And Bo Dallas is BEYOND stale as champion and needs to go, although I don't think Adrian Neville is the solution.

  1. I think that Neville has gotten worse since being in NXT, personally
Considering his experience level, Mojo is doing fine. He has a good look and charisma, which goes a long way in the WWE.
I don't see anything special in Bo Dallas.
Guys like CJ Parker and the Ascension are useless and bring nothing at all to the table.
Tyler Breeze should debut before the end of the year. He has been in developmental for a few years and its sink or swim time for him.
Rusev shouldnt be called up yet as he isnt ready. I like him though but if you are called up too soon and fail, its very tough to get out of the midcard nowadays.

  2. For me, I started watching NXT based on Scott's recaps and the buzz over Cesaro/Zayn's 2 out of 3. I kept watching it because of the girls, weirdly enough. Bayley especially, because her enthusiastic fan turned wrestler gimmick is so weirdly charming.

  5. Yep. 10 minutes down the road.

  6. Who SHOULD be champ at this point? Zayn should be on the main roster. I agree Bo is stale and I agree that Neville isn't really the answer, but I'm not sure who should be at this point.

  7. It's still decent. Neville works in nxt because he can have great matches, but I see him being lost on raw. I'd say its a good place for refining the newer characters for WWE.

Adam Cole. Why he's doing that gimmick in ROH and not NXT blows my mind. Hell, bring in Matt Hardy too, if anything to show the guys what happens when you get lazy and do too many drugs.

  10. I really thought they were onto something with Bo in "chickenshit heel who thinks he's an inspirational babyface" mode, but they've since moved him back into more of a generic asshole heel role. You're right, though--it's time to give someone else a turn with the belt.

  11. He doesn't even need to sing every single week. Let him be a complete artiste--interpretive dance, painting, architecture, poetry.

Because I'm totally with you, if he keeps belting it out of him like that, his vocal chords are gonna be messed.

  12. The problem I see with Neville (besides that I keep calling him Aaron Neville) is that he's got a case of the Kennedy Syndrome, where the crowd loves one thing he does and doesn't give a SHIT otherwise. When he's doing his flippydoos, the crowd is apeshit for him. The rest? Entrance? Sympathy segment? His awful promos? Nothing.
