Yeah, you’ve talked about the Match, the Movie, but what about the theme song??? The video is so 80’s I’m surprised it doesn’t have Teen Wolf.
BONUS: You get The Brain being awesome.
Oh! Oh! This reminds me of another weird thing about the History of the WWE documentary -- they're spending 5 minutes talking about shooting the video for Piledriver, complete with snark from John Cena, but they don't have the rights to the music any longer so they have to play the video clips with the sound muted on it, like it's on YouTube or something.
Anyway, carry on with the bashing on the No Holds Barred song.
Great, no holds barred...
ReplyDeleteWhy did Vince never use the BOTTG Octagon in the WWF?
ReplyDeleteHeenan looked like a older Dolph Ziggler.
How do they not have rights to Piledriver? And if they don't who does?
ReplyDeleteSometimes love is like a slow dance, it feels just like a piledriver!
Rick Derringer owns all the Piledriver stuff and they just won't to pay him for whatever reason. Probably because the initial rights were negotiated before the digital era, I'd guess. Kind of like what happened with WKRP when it came to DVD in butchered form.
ReplyDeleteBack in the late 80s when this came out my dad took me, my brother, and a friend to the movies. The choice was between this and "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka!". Me, my brother, and my dad chose "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka!". 25 years later I can confidently say we made the right choice.
ReplyDeleteDAT DRUMS!
ReplyDeleteYeah, the licenses used for WKRP had about a decade expiration date. It's not just the DVD - some of the syndicated reruns were butchered as well. Although apparently
ReplyDeleteI can't see anyone else wanting to license Piledriver from Derringer. And if WWE doesn't want to pay him to license it then it's pretty much worthless. He'd probably would make more just by selling it back to them, although maybe they don't even want to buy it back.
ReplyDeleteIf Vince McMahon doesn't get the rights back to "Piledriver: the Rasslin' Album II" (Technically, this was the complete name, as named by Slick on some video I clearly remember waaaaaay too well), then the WWE Network gets NO BUYS!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to make the 8-hour trek to my parents' house to see if I still have the VHS of the videos somewhere.
I'm sure he'd be willing to sell it back, if the WWE was willing to pay is price.
ReplyDeleteDerringer has had a really long career as a musician. He knows the importance of royalties, and he could probably live comfortably for life off the royalties of "Rock and Roll, Hootchie Koo" alone. The other possibility is he may just be embarrassed to have been involved and doesn't want to have the music released.
Either way, he has no need to accept a low-ball offer from the WWE.
The Piledriver music video was on the SNME DVD back in 2009, and it's also what WWE uses to dub over "The Bird" by Morris Day in Koko's earlier matches. Anytime WWE shows one of Koko's matches, his music is either "Piledriver" or "Bird, Bird, Bird".
ReplyDeleteThere's a lot of instances of WWE replacing music when it isn't necessary. For example, on Classics On Demand, Chris Candido's dubbed music on ECW shows is the same music Ricky Steamboat had in 1989 for his matches against Flair at Chi-Town Rumble and Clash VI, yet they dub over it in Steamboat's matches.
I doubt WWE pays for any music in old shows, so if there's a problem with Derringer, they shouldn't be able to use "Real American" yet that's one song WWE has never been dubbed over in any re-broadcasts.
Patterson and Brisco coming out to Real American still cracks me up.
ReplyDeleteForgot one more instance of WWE editors not knowing what they're doing. In the final months on Classics On Demand, they starting replacing/deleting Honky Tonk Man's theme for the first time ever. At the same time, the Best of MSG DVD set was released, and the song is intact for the SummerSlam match with Warrior.
ReplyDelete"Married with Children" dealt with the same thing to iirc. Not sure to what extent
