WWE Network Update Day 2

AKA "The Topic That Is Destroying Daniel Bryan In Ad Revenue".

PS3 is working fine as of this afternoon, live stream loads (Bret v. Shawn DVD currently on there), PPV archives load and now there's little bookmarks on the timeline for most of them, complete with SPOILERS for the finishes.  Timeskipping is a total writeoff, don't even bother yet.  You can skip to the specific points in the timeline in theory, but it immediately stops playing.  Video quality for pre-2000 stuff is hit-or-miss, as you'd expect, since most of it was mastered from VHS-quality tapes.  Clearly none of the full shows were redone for the DVD era like the individual matches were, but it's not like I haven't watched a million VHS dubs in my lifetime.  Also I'm now watching on a 42" plasma instead of my old 27" tube TV like back in the day, so that would also influence the quality.

iPad works perfectly as well, easy to navigate, looks FANTASTIC because of the smaller screen size.  Everything loads for me right as well as of this writing.  iPhone works as long as I'm on Wifi, since going back to 3G reveals my Canadian locale to the world and thus geoblocks me.

The website, however, is a no go.  Live stream not currently loading, archives not currently loading.  The website is literally my last option for viewing, though, so this isn't a big deal to me.

I really kind of like the random nature of the live stream, just tuning in and having the sitdown interview with Goldust on the Main Event or whatever.

So far so good today.

Comments

  1. Sucks about the website because that would be my main option, as I only have a laptop.

  2. I always have wondered how as revenue is earned. Is it by hits or by those clicking on the ads, or both.

  3. I am really, really, happy with the live stream "channel." I wish Netflix would implement something similar. Basically making a better version of the way traditional TV works.

  4. The website and on-demand stuff is working well on Firefox. I'm sure they'll get the on-demand stuff fixed on the other platforms in the coming days. The thing I was skeptical about was the live stream and that seems to work well.

  5. Both, plus incredibly random randomness on the part of the advertisers a lot of the time. February has been a pretty crap month overall but it absolutely exploded on Monday.

  6. Update: Added the app to Xbox 360, can't even sign in. So that continues.

  7. I'm the opposite of Scott...the web site is the only thing that consistently works with all features...

    ReplyDelete
  8. Okay. And if anymore WWE employees decide to write lettters to Bryan Alvarez, I will jump right on that for ya. Those get the hit count up big time.

  9. Question for Network users: based on the streaming and buffering issues you've had so far, are you feeling more or less confident that the Wrestlemania stream is gonna work?

    ReplyDelete
  10. What kind of TV do you have, Scott? If it's a new 42", I'm guessing a Panasonic X60 or LG 4500 (unless it's a Samsung, in which case it's probably the 43" F4500).

Just curious, I'm a TV/Audio nerd. Generally speaking, Plasma > LED.

  11. I think it will work fine. Live stream runs smooth everytime Ive used it

    ReplyDelete
  12. I wonder if there's money in re-releasing Scott's Books with links to specific matches on the WWE Network, especially if you can go to specific time-codes. I.E "Mick Foley Falls off the cell!" having a link to that point in the match. Can you write ebooks with Hypertext in them?

  13. The live stream is impressive. Looks and runs great. The NXT Arrival should run smoothly

  14. I've had zero problems outside of Flash being stupid and my work computer being older than Hogan's last undyed hair.

  15. For the record don't ever ever ever get that ad sense account messed up. I got mine reinstated a year ago and it STILL won't talk to my youtube. Those 100k views on The Blue Man Group without makeup could be paying for like 40 percent of an ice coffee!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Roku - Haven't been able to watch more than 3-4 minutes of anything without getting the connection timeout error. But seems to work ok on my computer.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Update 2: The website problem appears to be an issue within Chrome. I switched to IE and everything works perfectly.

  18. I'm really not worried about WM, for two reasons:

    1) It doesn't really sound like anybody's had issues with the live stream yet, and I'd imagine it's far easier for the system to just pump out one "always on" stream than it is to search through tons of other shows and deliver them to specific users at specific times.

    2) There's still, what, six weeks before WM? I'm pretty confident that any bugs - or those that may effect the live stream, at the very least - will be worked out by then.

  19. Yeah, I was VERY pleasantly surprised by how good the live stream looked.

    ReplyDelete
  20. it's a rebranded Samsung 42" 1080P from a couple of years ago. I too love plasma, but given hindsight and knowledge that it would be positioned with a window shining on it all the time, I would have tried to go with LED instead. The glare can drive me a bit crazy.

  21. Wow its not looking good

    ReplyDelete
  22. This shit just won't work on my ps3 which is the really the only way I want to watch it. Even the stream won't play. Seems to be fine on my tablet and and laptop (buffering issues aside) but the ps3 not working is getting frustrating

    ReplyDelete
  23. Live stream will not play on my PlayStation

    ReplyDelete
  24. This is all pushing me to wait a few weeks and sub then

    ReplyDelete
  25. Actually for me, thats by far and away what's working best, where my Ps3 won't play anything yet

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yeah as of 6 est only the website is working for me with google chrome. Firefox is a lost cause. Ps3 and Roku still won't do anything. Very disappointing thus far.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I've been trying to watch WCW Greed in Chrome and it just randomly stops every few minutes.

On a side note, I've already cancelled, but that's more from my lack of interest in the current landscape and my lack of time to sit and watch archival stuff.

  28. If it was this Sunday, no chance

    ReplyDelete
  29. Gotcha.

Although, if you're willing to pay for it, the higher-end plasmas are much brighter and have better anti-glare coatings than the lower-end/older models. Still not the best option if there's a window shining directly on it, but the picture-quality can't be beat.

Although Samsung's top-of-the-line last year, the F8500, was actually as bright (or brighter) than many LEDs. The 51" is a pretty reasonable $1700.

    ReplyDelete
  30. That is because it is trying to protect you from watching shitty WCW.

    ReplyDelete
  31. You just had to go and spoil it.

    ReplyDelete
  32. You should 100% get the network. Its awesome. But do yourself a favor and wait a week or two

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'm in favor of chapter headings/bookmarks but agree they shouldn't be spoilers: just say "Rock-HHH for WWF Title" at the beginning of the match, not "Rock hits People's Elbow to win the title" near the end.

  34. The hardboot didn't work?

Are you over Wifi or plugged in via Cat 5?

    ReplyDelete
  35. I just caught the Shockmaster thing for the first time in its entirety via one of these legends roundtable things. Kudos to Sid for acting like he saw a ghost despite the dude falling over like an idiot.

Also, anyone else think The Shockmaster sounded like Harvey Firestein?

    ReplyDelete
  36. I have the lg4500 in my bed room!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Unfortunately it did not. Im on via wifi

    ReplyDelete
  38. Just finished WCW Sin over a two day span.
Pretty good show and the last PPV for WCW
The opener between Jason Jett and Kwee Wee was surprisingly awesome and Skipper & Romeo vs. Kidman & Mysterio stole the show.
Steiner and DDP delivered in the main event too
