QOTD 129: The Week of Waiting.

Can you feel it?

I said, can you feeeeeeeel it?

"Wrestlemania XXX" is a week away - and The 'Ottie Awards' are only 6 days away, so lets talk about waiting.

What wrestling events, movie, game, show, album, or event were you the most hyped for - EVER?

What do you remember waiting for 'most' as a kid, or even adult - did it live up to the hype, or let you down?

  1. I remember that abortion. Didn't buy it though. Just rented it. Mayhem was the worst imo.

    ReplyDelete
  2. That thing was pretty awful...

    ReplyDelete
  3. I'd like to see the Dudleys back in WWE. Am I the only one?

    ReplyDelete
  4. I was so pumped for Wrestlemania VI. That one and WM VII, definitely

    ReplyDelete
  5. Amsterdam_Adam_CurryMarch 30, 2014 at 1:35 PM

Raw and Raw 2 for the X-Box were the worst, Mayhem was shitty but at least playable.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Amsterdam_Adam_CurryMarch 30, 2014 at 1:37 PM

That's how I feel about the first MGS. It's not a bad game by any means, but I spent $50 and beat it that night.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I don't even recall WCW ever making a game I could play more than once.

I never had an XBox so I can't speak on Raw. The Smackdown games were always hit or miss.

    ReplyDelete
  8. WCW NWO Revenge would like a word with you :)

    ReplyDelete
  9. Amsterdam_Adam_CurryMarch 30, 2014 at 1:38 PM

Really, you didn't like Revenge for the N64?

    ReplyDelete
  10. WrestleMania 2000, WrestleMania X-7, Wrestlemania XX were three that I was just stoked to see as an adult.

WrestleMania 7 was the fisrt one we got as a kid, and it was also a pretty big deal to me at the time.

When I got my PS2 (back in 2002?) my friend convinced me to pre-order Madden 03, and I did and OHMYGOD what fun.

I could also barely contain my excitement for new seasons of 24 to emerge during that show's peak.

And I thought Scott said give up on trying to make Blog Otters a thing?

    ReplyDelete
  11. It's a chode-like. Thicker than it is long.

    ReplyDelete
  12. You're the first person to mention Blog Otters in this thread or post, so, YOU stop trying to make it a thing!

    ReplyDelete
  13. For legit sports, Game 7 of the Kings/Lakers in 2003 that went into overtime. I wanted the Lakers to lose SOOO BADLY. And the Kings failed me as usual, in overtime to boot.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Bob Barker would be proud.

    ReplyDelete
  15. The Kings didn't fail you. David Stern just saved you. Parallax should have been taking notes.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I was so happy when the Pistons solved the puzzle in 2005.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'd LOVE to see Sheamus vs. early 90's Vader... the one who beat Sting, Ric Flair, and various others into pulps... not the one who got punked out by HBK ;and also by Paul Orndorff in flip flops.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Super pumped for Godzilla.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Nope. GET THE TABLES! !

    ReplyDelete
  20. As a kid, WrestleMania V was a huge one, but then we realized we didn't have PPV, so I settled for Clash VI that day, and discovered Flair vs Steamboat. Still my favorite match ever, but I do love WrestleMania V.

Later on WrestleMania X-7 and WrestleMania XIX because I went to them live.

For games, COD Modern Warfare 2 and 3, Most of the NCAA and Madden games from 2003-present. Mortal Kombat 2 and Street Fighter 2 Turbo.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Madden gets me every year with "maybe, this time...".

Then I got 2k14 on Xbox One and had the feeling of "Holy shit, these guys get it"

    ReplyDelete
  22. I wonder if they would get the same hate that the New Age Outlaws got. (Oh right, they won't, because HHH).

    Game:
    WCW/NWO Revenge.... I bought it before I owned a N64!

    GTA5

    Sporting Event:
Wrestlemania 15, 24 and 25, game 6 2008 nba finals celtics vs lakers.... Was in the house for those and they were such special events to be at. Tough to rank them.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Mania 13 (first wrestling PPV party I ever threw, and it was a blast, even if the show was meh)... the lead up to SB 37 when the Bucs finally got theirs (I might have been the only person in L.A. who wasn't rooting for the Raiders)... recently, I bought GTA V last Black Friday, and was so underwhelmed by it I traded it into a local game store for credit (first time I've ever broken even on a trade-in).

    ReplyDelete
  26. Wrestlemania 17 lived up to the hype... and then some.
The last sporting event I had any real hype for was... Super Bowl 44? And as a Saints fan, slow first half, GREAT second half.
Video games... Man, I don't really know. I'm usually immune to the AAA bullshit, and prefer to find my games by "accident". Borderlands 2... that would have to be the last game I was hyped for... slightly disappointing in the storyline, but the overall game worked out fine.

Usually, "interested" is the farthest I'll go in relation to waiting for anything. Outright "hyped" or "nervous" is rare... hell, even going to WM30 LIVE in seven days doesn't have me past interested yet.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I've gone back and forth on this. In the game the Lakers won Shaq put up a 36 and 20. He didn't bother in the other 4 games. I have concluded that a focused Lakers team would have just kept winning titles.

    ReplyDelete
  28. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryMarch 30, 2014 at 1:54 PM

Wrestlemania 21; not only was I going, but I still think that was the most stacked card ever. You had a legit, never-before-seen, still-in-their-prime dream match (Angle v HBK), a new match type (6-man ladder match) with game-changing stakes (MITB), tag team partners going at it (Eddie v Rey), Legend Killer vs. Legend (Orton v Taker), Austin in Piper'sPit, and two guys the crowd was hungry to see go over (Cena and Batista) and stop two long-suffering title reigns (HHH and JBL). While the main events didn't quite deliver, I still had a fucking blast.

In terms of games, MGS1 and FFX is probably atop my list, and in terms of movies, the Harry Potter series, Phantom Menace, The Dark Knight, and The Avengers.

    ReplyDelete
  29. When we fell behind 10-0, everyone was looking at me and ready to make fun. Based on that season, I knew we were coming back

    ReplyDelete
  30. I remember being pumped for getting an N64 and WCW/NWO Revenge for Christmas one year. Later on I would follow all the news for WWF Wrestlemania 2000 and No Mercy...I was especially excited for the later.

Middle school in the late 90s was the peak of my wrestling fandom - during the NWO days. I remember excitedly anticipating DDP vs. Goldberg and then Goldberg vs. Nash. Later on I also remember being really excited when Vince Russo jumped to WCW...but that didn't work out too well.

    ReplyDelete
  31. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryMarch 30, 2014 at 1:55 PM

My friend and I tag teamed MGS1 on release day and beat it in a 12-hour marathon session....then immediately started a new game and played through it again the next day.

    ReplyDelete
  32. That's awesome. I never saw Chamber in theaters for various seasons, but saw 4-8 at midnight and 1 and 3 opening weekend.

I was also way too jazzed for Kill Bill. My first midnight show

    ReplyDelete
  33. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryMarch 30, 2014 at 1:58 PM

My two friends and I went to the Deathly Hallows double feature when the second film came out. So awesome and the whole crowd was marking out. There was even impromptu Quidditch matches in the parking lot while waiting in line and there was an old lady in an extremely detailed Prof. Sprout costume, complete with plush mandrake.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I was the same way with No Mercy. my mom got it for me when I was at school then did the "well I don't knowwww if they had it," thing, then boom No Mercy. Jericho vs. Triple H, Ladder matches, Hardys, the end.

    ReplyDelete
  35. You know what won't be on those tables? Money. Because NONE would be left on them when the Dudleys return. AMIRITE?

    ReplyDelete
  36. At DH Part 2, people kept applauding at all the markout moments. It would've been annoying if it wasn't so awesome. And I was doing it too.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Guess none of you ever played WCW Backstage Assault. Talk about an appropriate game for a company that was, by that point, essentially dead... worst post-NES wrestling video game ever, by a very very wide margin.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Post-Katrina has had quite a few big hype games...

vs Falcons, return to the Dome in 2006 (and DAMN, did that game start out right.)
vs. Eagles, 2006 playoffs (ALMOST went bad early, when Brees left Bush hanging out in the flat.)
vs. Patriots, Monday Night in 2009 (The "Donte Stallworth is wide open by 30 yards on a TD pass" game. AKA the "Patriots gave up" game.)
The whole playoff run in 09-10 was psycho.
vs. 49ers, 11-12 playoffs. Even in a sometimes very sloppy loss, it was one hell of a game.

During the "Snape's Last Memory" chapter, there was audible sniffing all over the place. I don't know if I joined in, but i do know the room definitely became infused with some mix of dust and pollen....

Super Nintendo. I was so fucking stoked for Super Nintendo.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Oh, I played it. I think we need to rank the WCW suck. They made so many terrible games that I need to put some thought into which was worse.

    ReplyDelete
  42. ECW Hardcore Revolution is not that far off IMO...

    ReplyDelete
  43. You also forgot WCW/NWO World Tour. Revenge's predecessor might look clunky, but it played quite smoothly back then.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I watch the Gleason blocked punt all the time.

I am convinced I had a stroke during the 06 game, especially when Reggie fumbled the ball. I can't believe Andy Reid punted back to us. Deeeeuce.

Watched that game with a Pats fan. It ruled.

I can't watch highlights or videos or anything about the Vikings game and not think this is the one where we lose.

We don't talk about the 49ers game.

    ReplyDelete
  45. And, strangely enough, I acutally have a soft spot for the NES version of World Championship Wrestling. It doesn't hold up well at all, but it is still much better than Wrestlemania.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Original Xbox was the first console I ever bought at launch (and will no doubt be the last). I followed that hype from day one and was not disappointed. 360, sadly, was a rolling joke in comparison.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hey, I can admit an honest loss. And the 49ers game was that... the Seahawks game the year before was WAY more painful, and not just because we lost to a 7-9 division champ.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I hadn't read the book so that whole part was just depressing. The Hermione-Ron kiss was incredible.

I saw Deathly Hallows Part 2 ten times in theaters.

    ReplyDelete
  49. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryMarch 30, 2014 at 2:05 PM

    So was Paul Rudd!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mVmFq4sc4k

    ReplyDelete
  50. WM 17 exceeded expectations for me and to this day nothing really comes close. I also loved Madden 2003 and Arkham City. The inFamous games blew me away too.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I knew we were losing that Seahawks game. The Seahawks loss isn't painful bc without a running game, we're not beating the Bears.

The 49ers game....we would've won the Super Bowl. Had not we lost to the Rams...we would've won the Super Bowl. I officially boycott the city of St. Louis. (San Fran too)

    ReplyDelete
  52. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryMarch 30, 2014 at 2:06 PM

I had no skin in the Saints/Falcons game, but the Gleason blocked punt was so storybook insane, I was definitely on my feet.

    ReplyDelete
  53. 1. WCW Backstage Assault (Nintendo 64, PlayStation)
    2. WCW Mayhem (Nintendo 64, PlayStation, Game Boy Color)
    3. WCW Nitro (PC, Nintendo 64, PlayStation)
    4. WCW/nWo Revenge (Nintendo 64)
    5.WCW/nWo Thunder (PlayStation)
    6. WCW SuperBrawl Wrestling (SNES)
    7. WCW: The Main Event (Game Boy)
    8. WCW vs. nWo: World Tour (Nintendo 64)
    9. WCW vs. The World (PlayStation)
    10. WCW Wrestling (NES)

Here is a list of all sanctioned WCW games (I think). If it's not on the N64 there is a 96.3% chance that it sucked, except backstage assault. That sucked pretty hard.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Yep. And in that second half, man...it got really dusty at the end.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Just watched Austin vs Angle from Summerslam 2001 and that match has aged very well. It's as awesome today as it was when it first happened in 2001.

Also watched some of St. Valentines Day Massacre and Ryan Shamrock was hot

    ReplyDelete
  56. Mister_E_Studd_Got100ProblemsMarch 30, 2014 at 2:09 PM

    I totally remember that commercial.

    Who's Paul Rudd?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Man I loved that game. I also doubt it holds up but it was good enough for the time.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Which 2k14 game?

    ReplyDelete
  59. I think you need some help, perspective wise: http://hollywoodchicago.com/news/grand-theft-auto-v

    ReplyDelete
  60. I vowed to not eat until we scored a TD. Not one of my better vows.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Summer Slam 1996 when Vader didn't win was a letdown for me.

WrestleMania 25 also wasn't that good outside of Shawn vs Taker

    ReplyDelete
  62. Exactly. The Seahawks loss was embarrassing as they were 7-9, but they were never getting by the Bears in the next round.

The D holds against SF? Saints vs. Giants in the Superdome for the NFC title. Eli has some sort of magic horseshoe up his ass in the playoffs, but nobody wins in the Superdome but the Saints and the Saints had rung up 49 points on them during the regular season besides. Saints vs. Patriots in the SB...a shootout between two big offenses, but eventually Brady can't keep up with Gronk being the decoy that he was.

Seahawks were an embarrassment, but losing to the Niners was a ring off the finger.

    ReplyDelete
  63. THIS. Any video game where you can play as Hot Stuff Eddie Gilbert is a winner, despite the goofy looking characters and failing to change finishers from the Japanese to U.S. translation (ex: Flair was bitmapped over Giant Baba, so instead of the figure four your finisher is the "Jumping Neck Breaker Drop").

    ReplyDelete
  64. We would've murdered the Giants in the Dome and I think we would've beaten the Pats.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Mister_E_Studd_Got100ProblemsMarch 30, 2014 at 2:13 PM

    Wu-Tang Forever

    ReplyDelete
  66. I live 15 minutes from MetLife, my regular bar is the one directly across the highway that can be seen on the flyovers on Sundays, lol...so I'm around Giants fans quite a bit, and to a man they've all said how thankful they were when we went down against SF and how they would've gotten pasted against the Saints.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Madden killed me off for good with that cone vision thing. I got to a point where I just wanted to be a button masher. Madden started asking for way too much of a commitment.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Me and my friends played the shit out of Revenge, battle royal mode all day. The rest of that list sucks the meat missile (aside from WCW NES).

    ReplyDelete
  69. Oh cool. I live about 45 min from there but have only been there for 29.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I had a big 50 person party for WM 2000 and even had a countdown E-mail list 30 days in advance of the event. To this day I am glad we had that party because my *goodness* that WM would have sucked on its own without the hyping behind it. Yike.

    ReplyDelete
  71. If it was just one disc it would have been a classic. Damn Biggie for starting that double-disc thing.

    ReplyDelete
  72. When Porter ran back the pass, I couldn't stop myself from yelling "we're gonna do it! we're gonna win the fucking Super Bowl!" which my buddies all immediately said was a jinx, and man, did they love breaking my balls when Peyton went back up the field, lol. Everyone else at the bar kept eyeballing me when it was going on too.

    ReplyDelete
  73. And oh man I'd forgotten about the Main Event Game Boy game. A buddy of mine got it for his birthday, and he brought his Game Boy on a field trip; a few of us took turns playing it on the bus ride back, and we wound up getting so pissed off at it that he chucked it out the window.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I had this match on a compilation tape when I was a kid and I was completely puzzled by that.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Oh it was.

"After the match, in the dressing room, the Barbarian, with tears in his eyes, thanked me for carrying him to the best match of his career and confided in me that he thought I was as tough as any Tongan he's ever know. "

    ReplyDelete
  76. I always assumed it was because wrestlers became pussies somewhere along the way. Same deal as the Sharpshooter - yeah, it hurts to be bend like that, you're only in it for 10 seconds, suck it up.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Didn't he wear it in WCW when he went back there?

    ReplyDelete
  78. But Randy lost to Zeus kind of.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Test had the best one.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Watched Eddie/Angle from WrestleMania XX. Most of the match is an even **** but the finish adds another 1/2*

    ReplyDelete
  81. Was the Brock/Goldberg match at WrestleMania XX the first time the crowd truly "hijacked" a match?

    ReplyDelete
  82. They should get Bo Dallas to play the Jimmy Garvin role.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Can't see the harm in Shane popping out for a quick cameo, I'm sure the crowd would like to see him.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I feel the exact same way as you. I hate the fact that it's a big injury trap but the Sheamus vs Cesaro stuff was tremendous.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Flair is dating Fifi now. Seriously.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Steamer and Flair were only around for about a month together before he decided to say fuck it and jump to WCW. On a related crossing paths note, I'm glad the WWF at least got one Flair/Von Erich match onto Coliseum Video (from a European Tour, October of '91, I think). Probably Von Erich's last "good" match.

    ReplyDelete
  87. The Bo-lievers gimmick CAN work if they tweak it enough to make it outright parody. He should basically turn into a delusional optimist with an over-the-top '80s workout routine montage rock song as his theme (use this as a base of reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kc71KZG87X4). Basically, he needs a series of montages where he does terrible things to people but then spins it as how he's helping them. Every promo should seethe with passive-aggressiveness and condescension. He should never get angry. He should always smile and speak down to everyone. Thumbs up to everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  88. It can definitely work, whether he comes in as that character and over time succumbs/seeks solace in his bro's stable or does it the other way around, we'll have to see. Either one would be cool though I think. He's definitely a million miles away from that dweeb that showed up in the Rumble last year so good idea sending him back to NXT.

    ReplyDelete
  89. I don't watch NXT, but from what I've heard... isn't that EXACTLY what his current gimmick is?

    ReplyDelete
  90. Worst_in_the_WorldMarch 30, 2014 at 4:04 PM

Seriously! It totally sucks when an act gets way over with the crowds and have lots of heat. What makes it even suckier is how 2 of the guys are showing themselves to be really good workers, and have been part of the most heated and best matches on the last two PPVs. Get them off TV!

    ReplyDelete
  91. Worst_in_the_WorldMarch 30, 2014 at 4:05 PM

Isn't that just what Cena's act already is?

    ReplyDelete
  92. So yeah, look at all those loose ends!

    ReplyDelete
  93. The RR 91 match v Bossman was easily a **** match

    ReplyDelete
  94. He started off that way but he's slowly morphed into just another cocky heel. I think if they have him channel early '00s Kurt then he'd be better off.

    ReplyDelete
  95. What would fans of Dick Murdoch be called?

    ReplyDelete
  96. Well they've done it much more entertaining and talented ats like Ryder and Dolph Ziggler.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Cole Miners still cracks me up.

    ReplyDelete
  98. I think that in any way acknowledging that Bray Wyatt is anyone other than a backwoods weirdo would take away from his mystique. Let the current creepy character play itself out before going there.

    ReplyDelete
  99. The item about Shane in F4W said he would be backstage but not appear on camera. It did not say he would be involved at all. Big difference.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Who's expected to remember that far back?

    ReplyDelete
  101. Not all heels winning, but the last two matches of the bash'92 featured the heel Vader going over Sting, and the heel team of Gordy and Williams going over Whindam and Rhodes.

I LOVED that Vader vs Sting match. GREAT ending and it's one of the best examples of an established star putting someone over in spades. Sting and Vader could always make magic together.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Melted down into a big gold chain.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Summerslam 98 - D'Lo beat Val Venis by DQ in the opener, but the faces won the next 7 matches.

    ReplyDelete
  104. There has to be a Hulk Hogan Battle Royal, and the winner gets a bigger trophy than the Andre trophy, setting off a feud between them.

    ReplyDelete
  105. They should change the trophy to be a bit more hunched over every year.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I liked them to, but those were the days of jobbers where two guys who spent 2 months beating up jobbers facing off was a big deal even if it was just throw together and lasted 3 minutes.

Put Kofi Kingston and Del Rio in the undercard now and nobody gives a shit.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Damn, I made a similar joke before I read yours. You win, beat me to it by 11 hours.

    ReplyDelete
  108. That's one of the things that hurt Orton's face turn in 2004. If it was up to him he'd still be with Evolution, cheating to win and taking part in 4 on 1 beat-downs. Evolution JUST saved him from Benoit, he celebrates with them, then they turn on him and he becomes a good guy because the bad guys won't let him in the club any more.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Definite "gray area", but very smart thinking. Props.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Yeah, I guess Flair didn't actually make his debut till September and Steamboat left before the Survivor Series.

Yeah, I believe that match is from Spain and it's a really solid one!

    ReplyDelete
  111. Well yeah, but you didn't know that was going to happen that night (and it was two nights later, to be that guy), so I think the point stands that even at the NWO's own PPV WCW didn't have the guts to have ALL of the NWO guys winning all of the big matches at that point (they did at Hog Wild and Fall Brawl 1996, but that was two matches on each show).

    ReplyDelete
  112. I was HUGE Demolition fan- and I was PISSED that they didn't ring the bell when Smash got the Dragon's arm to drop three times in a row. PISSED. I was like "WTF REF?"

    ReplyDelete
  113. It becomes Randy Orton's manager, so that finally someone with better mic skills can do his promos for him.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Make the trophy out of ribs. Delish.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Ironically, a big slammy is what killed him.

    Too soon?

    ReplyDelete
  116. 1. Rollins and Ambrose - two guys - gang up on Reigns.
    2. People then want to see Reigns get revenge.

How is this the wrong way to do it?

    ReplyDelete
  117. It wasn't liked they had booked him like a giant pussy or anything, though. Despite being a heel, he beat Cactus Jack on his own and won the World Title clean as a sheet. While he was a member of a heel stable, it's not like they gave him any reason to turn on them prematurely. I think his face turn was hurt by the fact that he has the charisma of a pine cone.

By the way, wasn't Rock's big face turn in 1999 precipitated by a bunch of guys ganging up on him?

    ReplyDelete
  118. Armageddon 2000 was dominated by heel wins, with only Jericho over Kane as the exception.

    ReplyDelete
  119. That would be some good stuff along the lines of Mick/Vince, where RVD thinks they are best buds, but Vince just despises him.

    ReplyDelete
  120. It might cause actual spine damage if you're not very flexible. So...how about you don't follow the example of Hulk "His Back Is Fused Solid" Hogan?

    ReplyDelete
