Question

Scott,

Random question.

Back in 1991, after Earthquake injured Andre on television, were there ever any real plans for The Giant to work a program with Quake, or was Andre way too beat up at that time? If it was the latter, what was the reason for the attack in the first place, knowing that there would be no eventual blow-off to the feud?

Thanks.

I think it was just a plot device to explain Andre walking around with a crutch after that.  He couldn't even work WM6 and that's why Haku did the whole match against Demolition alone.

  3. I think Vince wanted him to keep working, but each time they pushed towards it, they probably realized he just couldn't do it. They even announced him in the Rumble in 1991 - and he even cut a promo on it - but they pulled him out eventually.

  9. I feel like heels won every match at WCW ppvs between 97 and 99

  10. Backlash 2002 comes close to a packed card being one sided (as in a PPV with more than 4-5 matches like a Rumble PPV). Heels went over in every match except the main event, which featured 2 babyfaces (Hulk and Hunter).

  11. Starrcade '97. Weren't the only matches where faces won Larry over Bischoff, DDP over Hennig and Sting "over" Hogan?

  12. Due to the reference you made, i think a double post is ok.

  13. Just imagine how bad that match would have been.

I saw Andre face Bam Bam at MSG and it was the most boring 10 minute squash match ever (if Bigelow got 3 moves in i'd be shocked, and he got finished by an elbow drop). And Bam Bam could actually DO shit.

  14. It would've made more sense to destroy Andre building up Slam '90. Imagine Andre seconding Hogan for revenge. THAT'S FUCKING MONEY

  15. The first Survivor Series was close with all the faces winning. Only Andre won for the heel sides.

  16. And Rip won in the movie too!

  17. Did any heels win at WM X? I can't recall off-hand.

  20. damn. How could I forget that one.

  21. Ok, Bash 88 came close. Don't want to get the Luger choking thing started so we won't bother, but how in the hell do they not put all the faces over here? It's like Crockett wanted to go out of business.

sidenote: The tag match was a draw but still the faces didn't go over so it's counting dammit.

  22. Bash at the Beach '94 was pretty heel heavy. Only Hogan went over.

  23. Canadian stampede with the faces?

  24. Royal Rumble 1990 had the faces win every match.
    Hogan won the rumble
    Duggan beat Bossman
    Ronnie Garvin made Valentine submit
    Beefcake beat Genius
    Bushwhackers beat the Rougeous
Obviously the Rumble also had a lot of faces lose the match, so I'm not sure if it counts.

  25. Beefcake/Genius was a double DQ

  26. Earthquake kinda got away with a lot. There wasn't ever a blowoff for him squashing Damien, was there? Jake kinda got shifted into the Warrior/Savage drama instead not long after.

  30. Yeah, this was my observation too. It seemed like he must have been good to go at one point (as good to go as he could have been) because Vince kept dragging him out of the mothballs.

There was the Rumble thing as you mention -- which I think someone pointed out, he actually did legit get injured working a match in Japan before the show, so he was at least at that point 'cleared for the ring' so to speak. He seemed remarkably less mobile from that point on though.

Then following that, there was his whole random pairing with Bossman, although that might have just been a way to get him on WrestleMania and get his licks in on Bobby.

Post WrestleMania, there was that angle which led to the Quake "feud" -- where different managers were vying for Andre's services. He stuffed Fuji's face in a pie, spanked Sherri, etc. until Jimmy Hart announced he was to manage him, which led to the in-ring angle where Quake attacked him.

  31. Many blow offs were done at house shows at the time. You had to pay to see it live.

  32. WWF @ Long Island, NY - Nassau Coliseum - May 10, 1991 (14,000)
Kerry Von Erich won a 17-man battle royal, by last eliminating the Warlord, to earn an IC title shot later in the card; other participants included: ANDRE THE GIANT, the Bushwhackers, Hercules, Koko B. Ware, Davey Boy Smith, Col. Mustafa, Jim Duggan, Earthquake, Jake Roberts, the Barbarian, Paul Roma, Greg Valentine, Bret Hart, & Kato

Yeah they were looking for Andre to make an in ring comeback in Spring 1991 but he just could physically do it. WM 6 wasnt his last WWF in ring action. He had a few matches in 1991 at house shows. You got to think they were hoping to put the two huge guys against each other on a future PPV, but thankfully we didnt have to suffer through it.

I remember hearing that the original plan for Summerslam that year was Andre and Jake vs. the Natural Disasters--there may even be a WWF magazine floating around with the match mentioned--but it was switched to the Bushwhackers instead. If it's true, it means they had some pretty high hopes for a guy who could barely walk, let alone wrestle a whole match (even a tag team bout).

  34. Yeah, Brutus' mullet and outfits were pretty awful at this point.

  35. Jake/Quake did the HS circuit for a couple of months, but nothing for television. I just chalked it up as Quake broke Jake's spirit, so he turned dark, and took it out on Warrior for being a pussy.

  36. There were a lot of feuds that didn't get blown off on TV that year due to the odd Summerslam main event. Taker/Warrior, Jake/Quake, Jake/Warrior were all house show matches.

  37. I believe Andre couldn't participate in WM6 because he died shortly after WM3. That's what the Hulkster told me anyway.

  38. Man I dug the Texas Tornado. At the time I couldn't figure out why he was floundering after a big debut and nice IC Title victory. Unfortunately substance abuse took over. But Von Erich was the shit.
One of the best kick ass Survivor Series teams was Warrior, L.O.D. & Von Erich.

  41. Was this the same magazine that had Bret and Hogan having a tug of war over the WWF title?

  42. I always figured the Taker-Jake/Warrior feud didn't get blown off due to Warrior leaving/getting fired. If I remember correctly, it wasn't even set up until a couple of weeks before SummerSlam, and I think Warrior was doing house shows with Hogan against Slaughter and Sheik.

Warrior didn't get fired he just got lost in the Garden. (remember the Mountie? there's a lot of halls in th building)

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think you're right - Warrior/Jake was probably going to be a fall feud until Warrior was fired.

Wasn't the whole reason Warrior was involved with Jake was to learn to face the Undertaker? So maybe there would have been a Savage/Warrior vs Undertaker/Jake thing going on.

I always wonder what would have happened if The Barber hadn't gotten hurt. His win vs Mr. Perfect was my favorite match of WM 6, (not so much the ultimate challenge for obvious reasons.)

  46. Andre in the 1991 Royal Rumble is an interesting what-if. I wonder how he's booked and who tosses him. Does he come in at the end and make the final four, fighting alongside Hogan before Earthquake gets him over the ropes? Does Undertaker toss him out to really establish Taker as a major new force? (And man, the history of having Andre pass the torch to UT as the company's new special attraction monster legend would've been incredible, in historical hindsight.)

Heck, would Andre even win?? The Rumble still had no title shot attached at that point, remember. Maybe they reach the end and Quake/Knobbs toss HOGAN and then have Andre hurt before Hogan does his usual poor sport routine and rushes in with a chair to attack the two heels. Andre recovers and tosses them out to win, with Hogan raising his hand afterwards. Hogan still gets into the WM7 main event just because. It'd be a reverse of 1990 --- Hogan wins the Rumble before he's jobbing to the Warrior at Mania, so this time he "jobs" the Rumble to Andre because he knows he's getting the title from Slaughter.
