Today's recommendation is WWE's Breakdown from 1998. This was at the height of Russo-ism, and it shows in a lot of the matches on this show. But matches to watch from here include Edge vs. Owen Hart and a Triple Threat Cage Match between Mankind, Ken Shamrock and The Rock during the period where the fans turned Rocky face, but he was really swerving us the whole time. The main event was a Triple Threat between The Undertaker, Steve Austin and Kane for the WWF Championship with a combination Russo/Dusty finish. Attitude Era fans should take notes on this show.

Or as the title suggests, talk about whatever the hell you want.

Comments

  1. The beauty of the Rock in fall 98 is that he didnt do anything differently character-wise. So it was a beautiful bit of business where the fans were swerving the fans.
Survivor Series 98 was Russo's masterpiece. Time may have not been kind but as a high schooler watching with 10 of my friends, I dont remember marking out any harder.

  2. If there isn't dominated by basketball talk, we've failed

  3. Gotta love Howard bailing on the Lakers and an extra 35 mil to go down 0-2 at home to Portland. I still don't trust the blazers but if they can split at home this series is over!

    ReplyDelete
  4. I'd be shocked if Houston wins more than 1 game. Both teams are flawed but this is a fucking bad showing by houston. Fucking Aldridge man

    ReplyDelete
  5. Unbelievable performances by lillard and of course Aldridge.

Bad bad look for James harden. He's the worst defender out of any "star" NBA player and all of a sudden in the two biggest games of the season he can't make a shot.

The rose garden is going to be rocking this weekend. God I hope Portland wins the series.

  6. Is there anyone besides LBJ or Durant right now that can lead a team to a title?

    ReplyDelete
  7. IRS is definitely one of my least favorite wrestlers of all-time and an automatic fast forward. Did he ever have any good singles matches? The three minute abdominal stretches every match are the worst.

Harden really gets on my nerves. Im not sure if its the "Oh hey its almost the new season, sorry Thunder send me somewhere else" or the hey look at me I look like a terrorist so Im cool thing but its something.

  11. DeMar DeRozan :D

  12. Foley's promo before that match was great stuff. "Sugar coasted tested...is that a new breakfast cereal?"

    ReplyDelete
  13. Caught some of the nhl playoffs this week. The Pittsburgh-Columbus series has been awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Love the tag title change match...as much as a Quebecer fan as I was, that was a really cool surprise and payoff to all the Kid/Jannetty/Polo stuff in the winter.

Also, our old buddy CRZ took a look at and delved into the Top 10 WWE Network Shows graphic... curious if they keep showing that each week....

  15. I was watching that match yesterday, and I totally forgot that Kid and Jannetty won the titles. So, when the finish happened, I was like, "Wait, what?"

    ReplyDelete
  16. Until the last few weeks I totally forgot how much build went into that match/feud too throughout December with those guys.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Marty Jannetty in late 1993-early 1994 was one of the best wrestlers in the company. Of course, with him being him, he doesn't make it to the spring.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I don't know, but I will say this: LaMarcus Aldridge is awesome.

As for Durant, I felt before the playoffs, and I still feel, that OKC can absolutely lose that series to Memphis. The fall-out from that in Oklahoma City should be interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Harden is just a ridiculous offensive player, but on d, he's embarrassing for a guy who's supposed to be a franchise player.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Oh, there absolutely would have been a place for Jannetty, if he could have stayed clean, as you noted. He probably wouldn't have been a top guy- aside from maybe a random match as a heel challenger against face HBK at an IYH in 1996- but, man, he would have been a great I-C level or tag team guy.

    ReplyDelete
  21. The interesting thing is, if Houston gets bounced in the first round, will they make a coaching change? I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility that Houston, Indiana, and OKC are all looking for new coaches this summer.

I grant you, the Thunder are probably the least likely to make a change, but would that ever be a hot job.

  22. Watching Royal Rumble '97, and they played the segment where Lawler asks Goldust if he's gay, and Goldust yells no and punches him. I had forgotten about that, but it was pretty surprising back then for me.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think you fire Brooks unless the get to the finals. They need a third guy who can score Off the bench. I don't know why they didn't make a play for a guy like Turner

    ReplyDelete
  24. A part of me is rooting for the pacers just so Bynum can get a ring after the ridiculous/apathetic year he's had. 3 time nba champ: ANDREWWWWW BYYYYNUM

    ReplyDelete
  25. I believe it was Zach Lowe who said he thought the Thunder were too cheap to pay two coaches or make any moves at the deadline. If he's basing that on inside knowledge or the Harden situation, I'm not sure.

I think if you have two gifted players like Durant and Westbrook, you do what you have to to win.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Makes sense. The thing is, even though Durant and Westbrook are young it's not like the Thunder have a huge long term window. If they don't win it this year or next, I'd be surprised if Westbrook stuck around

    ReplyDelete
  27. Yeah, that's what I was trying to say. If memory serves, both Durant and Westbrook can leave in a couple of years. Can you imagine having those guys for several years, with only one Finals appearance to show for it? That's why I think, like you, they should make a coaching change.

Chris Paul? BTW, those ads he's in are fucking stupid.

    ReplyDelete
  29. And he sweats more than any other wrestler I've ever seen.

  30. Watching the Post Rumble 94 RAW (the last new one up for the run so far....it's the first Raw with JR on commentary for you historians.

    ReplyDelete
  31. THREADJACK: Steve Austin's Facts About Rats on today's podcast has had me damn near in tears for the last 10 minutes. I swear I could listen to Steve & Ted Fowler's battle with those damn rats all day long.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Also...I prefer Jim Ross to JR on commentary....THATS RIGHT I SAID IT!

    ReplyDelete
  33. ... and now I have to go to it.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Jeez, it took a good 5 years for Vince's hair to get back to normal after WrestleMania 23

    ReplyDelete
  35. I liked him as Mike Rotunda. He definitely seemed washed up as IRS.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Finished the last new 94 raw. Now watching the Backlund Hogan Legends ep.

    ReplyDelete
  37. The number 1 rule in that series: don't get a two goal lead because you will lose that particular game.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Breakdown is a great ppv. The video package before Austin vs Undertaker vs Kane is one of my favorites ever. The two second shot with Austin having a look in his face "oh fuck I am screwed" after he sees Kane and Taker destroy someone right in front of him is incredible.

Asp I'd argue that Survivor Series 1998 is the height Russo-ism.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Bossman had him beat in that regard

    ReplyDelete
  40. Only time I ever liked his work was in the Varsity Club and his first run as Michael Wallstreet (as opposed to his second run where he might as well have been called Michael Walmart). Otherwise, I always found him to be only slightly less boring than Tony Garea. He must have a charismatic wife, because Bray didn't get his charisma from him.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Yep, 4 for 4 now, including the TuxedoBirds blowing a THREE goal lead in Game 4.

    ReplyDelete
  42. And that will be the first and last time I use that nickname for the Penguins. It just looks wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  43. And it also looked like his face got younger too.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I liked the Korderas talk. I guess I never realized he was in the ring when Owen fell and what that must have been like.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Him talking about how the rats on the Broken Skull Ranch are the most athletic rats in the world had me cracking up on the way to work.

    ReplyDelete
  46. And it's the second time rats have been a highlight on the show. Ironic, considering he's the Rattlesnake.

    ;)

    ReplyDelete
  47. Sounds like Ron Burgundy calling the game.
