QOTD 137: Mmmmmmm Dat's Good Post Production.

Billy Kidman, video editor.
Lets talk about video editing! There are a couple of cool tricks that a lot of editors...well, all video editors, use to create an emotional response for an audience. I'll post some examples below.

For example if there's a song in a trailer, 90 percent of the time the song's beat with coicende with some kind of action, be it a character's footsteps, gunshots, or cars crashing.

For example that Wrestlemania 17 promo with the Limp Bizkit song "My Way" had pretty much every Rock Bottom / Stunner hit during a specific beat of the song. I *love* this kind of thing, so I'm curious to see what you Wrestlerock Wombats think.

What are your favorite trailers / montages / music videos / sequences from films or television where the music, action, and camera work cut together so wonderfully you're left in awe?

Here's a good example - check out how the beat to Imagine Dragon's song "On Top of the World" plays with the bounding of a lemur jumping across the ground. It's cool.

Here's an example of how even something that's really fucking bad - i.e something that I did for fun to test out my editing skills as a freshman, can be made a little better by timing edits / fades / cuts / flashes to evoke a response from the audience. Yes I know I spelled experience wrong. I was on <Rhymes with Dustfumes> at the time.

And here's the masterclass, my favorite hype video of all time. I think the timing is a little off on this, but notice how all the swooshes and drum beats in the song all coincidence with a camera cut or some kind of action.

I like this trailer a TON because it actually subverts the stuff I'm talking about a bit. There's a lot of "Footsteps to the beat" stuff, but I LOVE that they're using a largely *not* serious song to highlight all this action. It's fucking wonderful.

Comments

  1. The first trailer for Goldeneye has always struck me as great mix:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUNP9xrOBd4

From the opening of Bond shooting the letters and coming out of the shadows to how the new take on the classic theme song mixes so well with the action on screen, the beats and flows to pull you in, one of the best trailers ever for how well it clicks music and action together.

    ReplyDelete
  2. I always come back to that Freddie Blassie promo that ran before a WM, but I doubt that's what you're talking about. DBry's montage for WM30 was damn good.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Is that the one before Invasion where Steph is like "You'll be dead soon!"

    ReplyDelete
  4. I was going to say the "My Way" video from WrestleMania X-7. That's the gold standard that all wrestling promo vids to look up to.

Years ago, I saw a video done by a college student for an assignment that interspersed scenes from the animated "Alice in Wonderland" to Eminem's "Rabbit Run" It was fucking incredible to watch. Sadly, I don't think it is on YouTube.

As far as film, I LOVE the scene toward the end of Casino where things get "cleaned up" and it is set to "House of the Rising Sun" by The Animals.

    ReplyDelete
  5. YES! That's such a good scene. I hate it because it's so Iconic that anyone I talk to about Vegas now says it's all "Disney-i-fied" and I'm like, shut up, you're an idiot, there's drugs and whore-ahs everywhere!

Back then he looked like Trent Reznor's twin brother.

  9. Nice! is that placebo?!

    ReplyDelete
  10. I've spent the last month doing a group project editing scenes from my professor's shitty ass Indiana Jones ripoff movie, so I've soured on digital editing talk for the moment lol.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Oh god. Let me guess, the whole thing is shot on DSLR?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Yessir. In my opinion, this is the real masterclass. So well done.

    ReplyDelete
  13. The video quality and everything is great, but the camerawork, acting, and general storyline are just so unbelievably campy and shoddy.

    ReplyDelete
  14. The whole thing is good, but goosebumps at 2:26 of My Way when the music picks up. Bravo.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Another fantastic one. Remains awesome despite being dated/featuring a kid rock song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMrp5aX5-6k

    ReplyDelete
  16. A good DVD WWE should crank out is a documentary about their production team. WWE loves blowing themselves, so it should be easy to put together, and actually give some credit to the people who make the shows look as good as they do. Not to mention the highlight packages and videos some of which are legendary.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I was never as confused as when watching the WM26 NBC special and I started hearing Enya playing behind the HBK/UT footage. But I'll be damned if it didn't seem to perfectly encapsulate the moment, and the passing into the night of HBK's career. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVSbt6vlQEg - first two minutes or so of the video.

    ReplyDelete
  18. The Chateau fight scene in Matrix:Reloaded. The music is times to the fights really, really, well. One of the few bright spots of the two shitty sequels.

    ReplyDelete
  19. No, I can't find it online, but it's part of WMXV and runs right after America the Beautiful. On the network, it starts at about 2:20.

    ReplyDelete
  20. The Austin/Rock sitdown interview was one of the best pieces of business ever in terms of building a match. It should be required viewing for new wrestlers coming in.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yeah, watching now; chills and tearing up.

this discussion will not be complete without the original "lonely road of faith" wwf vid

    ReplyDelete
  23. The best part is "I need to beat you Rock. I need to beat you more than anything." It really foreshadowed the Austin heel turn, proving that he would indeed do anything to win.

    ReplyDelete
  24. The money shots in Big Black Asses 4 is cinematic genius

    ReplyDelete
  25. best montage ever is the one from south park's asspen; close second is the one from team america

    gotta be a montage~!

    ReplyDelete
  29. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryApril 15, 2014 at 2:05 PM

As a video editor myself, this is right up my alley. First WWE ones that came to mind was the "Running Up That Hill" montage for the HBK/Taker rematch package, Miz's "Hate Me Now" WM vid, and the Rock/Austin WMXIX package.

    ReplyDelete
  30. yeah, the problem with production these days is that everything looks so good it looks fakes. It's all about lighting and obscuring the image and making stuff appear gritty and such.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Do you Final Cut or Avid or *shudder* adobe premiere?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Ha, have you seen the zero gravity porno they released a few years ago? Got a buncha porn stars in the vomit comet. It was fun! I did a report on it.

I'll settle for a Network special

  34. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryApril 15, 2014 at 2:12 PM

Thats why I hate the 48fps version of The Hobbit; without the film filter were used to, everything looks so artificial. You could easily make out the makeup seams and such. Peter Jackson needs to take a page from Frozen and let it go.

  35. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryApril 15, 2014 at 2:15 PM

Peeping this on my phone since Im at work, so I cant click the link, but I assume thats the amazing HBK/Taker package?

  36. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryApril 15, 2014 at 2:16 PM

Premiere and Dalet. Both can take a suck.

  37. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryApril 15, 2014 at 2:22 PM

Every time I see Billy Kidman, I always think of the Cribs episode with him and Torrie, where hes playing PS2, and Torrie, proving shes just as useless out of the ring as she was in it, kicks out the power cord while walking by. While he shouldnt have had his system exposed like that for precisely that reason, that offense is grounds for divorce in my book, maybe even a mudhole stomping and walking it dry.

    ReplyDelete
  38. According to the rant repost a few weeks ago, this was thoroughly shit on. I loved it but at the time you guys hated it. Funny how things work out.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Surprised Botchamania hasn't gotten a mention yet, Heres an awesome example:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXNHlpq2dtI

That Kid Icarus theme gets me every time. The Starrcade 97 music choice was good too.

    ReplyDelete
  40. hahaha. I'm looking for an online one I can dabble in when I'm away from my actual laptop, kind of like how Pixlr is the photoshop for the web.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I know Scott's said it before, but Hogan and Steamboat is basically the most perfect tag team anyone can come up with.

That they're going against two of the best bumpers ever makes it all the sweeter.

    ReplyDelete
  42. That is fucking awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I don't have recollection of this.

    ReplyDelete
  44. He should have been paying attention to his Playboy model wife instead of a video game... maybe she wouldn't be fucking A-Rod now if he had... but I would expect someone like you to to put the priority on the video game over the girl.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Yup. I think that feud gets remembered as being better than it actually was just because that video was so damn good.

    ReplyDelete
  46. The "WWF Desire" videos they ran around 2001 or so were all excellent... I swear they could do one for the Brooklyn Brawler... or Tony Garea... and make it seem epic.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I mean they made fucking CREED look cool.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Hey, when you're the first guy to put Hogan through a table, you can pay attention to whatever you want!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Seriously, Hogan-Steamboat in 1987 would have the most perfect formula tag matches ever. Fast start, heels cheat to get control of Steamboat, Steamboat works the heat segment with about five false tags, finally gets hot tag to Hogan...Three punches, big boot, leg drop, victory.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Nah. I happily admit to being an emotional wuss when it comes to things that move me. That promo does it. Braveheart will get me at least twice every time I watch it. I can't really even watch The Shootist anymore, and FUCK Old Yeller. Just about anything where a dog dies messes with me, and will sometimes automatically get something struck from my viewing list. I wanted to check out House of Cards on Netflix, but a dog was run over off screen within the first 10 minutes. I was out. Don't plan on going back.

I can't always tell when it will happen. I rewatched one of Rush's concert films a few months ago and was practically blubbering like a little bitch. Jake's speech got me, as it did many. Warrior....not so much. The only thing I take from his speech now is that he clearly knew he had serious heart issues.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Yeah....cause doing that is much better than fucking Torrie regularly.

    ReplyDelete
  52. This didn't really follow formula that much, but it was a pretty fun go-home brawl.

    ReplyDelete
  53. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0bClUp9I6w

    End of discussion.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Well....maybe this.

    http://youtu.be/UhQA-06kSLU?t=3m6s

    ReplyDelete
  55. "From the Vault" or "WWE Universe: Across the Galaxxyz" (sic)

    ReplyDelete
  56. On the opposite end, I love it when a movie can do a long, tracking shot and you realize, "Hey, there hasn't even been a cut yet". Unfortunately I can't think of any examples of this off the top of my head. The Dark Knight, maybe?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Opening of The Bird Cage, the 4th episode of True Detective, all of "Rope" by Alfred Hitchcock, a few scenes in Goodfellas, and a buncha stuff in The West Wing.

    ReplyDelete
  58. For example if there's a song in a trailer, 90 percent of the time the song's beat with coicende with some kind of action, be it a character's footsteps, gunshots, or cars crashing.

Please explain this to me as it makes no sense.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Somehow this isn't surprising

    ReplyDelete
  60. You'll notice this more with age. The iwc craps on everything then looks at it wistfully later on

    ReplyDelete
  61. People used to SHIT ALL OVER wwf attitude era stuff at the time...now look at how it's remembered

    ReplyDelete
  62. The "Running Up That Hill" package is one of my favorites as well.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Okay watch the trailer with the cute animals and watch the trailer for Guradians of The Galaxy. You'll notice the drum beat of the music often times goes along with the steps of a character or the bounding of an animal.

If you look at Fast and Furious trailers, for example, various car related craziness often times coincidences with the bass drop or a moment of silence in a song, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Love me some Placebo.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Is it common to not see half of the videos on an iPad?

    ReplyDelete
  66. Yes I know. Kinda like HHH or Randy Orton. To think that in 40 years (maybe?) we'll be looking back at their memorial shows thanking them for all they have done.

    ReplyDelete
  67. The Beatles' video for "Free as a Bird." Outstanding.

    ReplyDelete
  68. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryApril 15, 2014 at 4:27 PM

The first 10-15 minutes of Gravity. Considering how much FX and greenscreening going on, holy shit.

If she stooped as low as Arod, maybe Kidman was onto something by getting out whle he can.

Its nice of you to comment on most of my posts these days. Ive neve had a stalker fan.

    ReplyDelete
  70. The three other guys do all the work but Hogan makes all the money.

    ReplyDelete
  71. While I love that they have full MSG shows, etc for completist sake there should be a section of just great matches that haven't really been seen.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Mister_E_Studd_Got100ProblemsApril 15, 2014 at 4:42 PM

Being generally related to the pictures, I have no Earthly idea about any of this.

I've already learned what a screenplay is this year, as well as various facts about podcasts. I have also watched one movie that I'd never seen before, as well as rewatched a classic, which is two pictures, and it's only April. This is movie overload for Mister_E_Mahn.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Maybe it was "The Player" I was thinking of. Here's more http://blogs.amctv.com/movie-blog/2007/09/the-ten-best-tr/

    ReplyDelete
  74. This, a thousand times.

    ReplyDelete
  75. It's okay. Tomorrow I'm going to go with Comic Strips and we can talk about Calvin and Hobbs and HOW DISTRAUGHT I WAS TO FIND OUT MY NEWSPAPER NEVER HAD IT.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Esquire showed the first five Rocky films this past weekend. The training montages still get me to this day. It's cheesy and all but it still sucks me in. every. single. time.

    ReplyDelete
  77. This might not fit the premise but Brent Musberger used to be a beast on those openings for college football games in the 80s and 90s. The production staff too but he did the voice-overs so whatevers. Miami-Oklahoma from 86 is probably the best.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Agreed AND these "old School" shows should be the full card

    ReplyDelete
  79. Kidman is looking more 'man' than 'kid' these days.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Basically any trailer using a Nine Inch Nails song. I'm a huge Reznor fan to begin with, but his songs have always lent themselves well to movie/game trailers

    ReplyDelete
  81. All the work! Lol!

    ReplyDelete
  82. Mister_E_Studd_Got100ProblemsApril 15, 2014 at 5:59 PM

I've got the full collection in hardback. Love C&H.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Hogan did a little bit in this one. But hell, he did as much as he needed to.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I always remember him making those mid season college football games seem SO big, especially those rivalry games. That plus his creepy old man obsession with Katherine Webb make him a personal favorite of mine

    ReplyDelete
  85. Hogan did the most important work. He sold the tickets.

  86. ESPN's tribute to the 20th century: http://youtu.be/Saqoz7vlXnk

The No Way Out 2001 promo for Stone Cold vs. HHH

    ReplyDelete
  87. Yeah man. Florida State-Miami, OSU-Mich, etc. Stuff just seemed epic. Bob Costas was good at them too but he hardly did football.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Wow I am SO mad I got to this thread late, this is an excellent topic as I am an amateur tv production nerd..

My two favorites, one wrestling related was the intro to the Rock/HHH Ironman match (all the different stuff that can happen within 1 hour. My youtube searching abilities is failing me at the moment, maybe someone else can find it, but that was a well done intro video.

My non wrestling one is the NBA on NBC. Not only was the theme music EPIC, their intros to games were very well done, my favorite one was the intro to Game 6 of the 97 NBA Finals, the game after the Michael Jordan flu game done to R Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly"....if I was a Jazz fan, I'd be really annoyed, but fortunately, I wasn't!!!

Oh, and fuck that My Way video right in the ass. I don't care how great the video is (it is pretty great), it still uses one of the worst songs in all of human history.

  93. Well, he is closing in on The Big 4-0 in a few weeks.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Fun fact - this was actually billed locally as Savage & Honky vs. Hogan & Andre, but this is the card where they ran the Piper's Pit angle with Andre getting a smaller trophy than Hogan, so they made the switch to Steamboat. All for the better, I'd say.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I watched this as part of a Randy Savage book I'm writing and I have to say, the first thing I thought when watching it was how formulaic it was to the usual tag team structure. Just because Savage spends the early portion avoiding Steamboat doesn't make it any less so. And I'm not sure what they're going home for? This was still a couple of months out from WrestleMania and Hogan wasn't going against either guy, unless you're referencing it as a main event for the live crowd?
