Survivor Series 2003 and Bob Holly

Hey, Scott.

I was watching Survivor Series 2003 last night. Bob Holly is in the opening Survivor Series match. Before the bell even rings, he attacks Brock Lesnar (as retaliation for the broken neck he got the year before), gets DQ'd, and leaves. I didn't time it, but I'm sure he was done for the night in less than 10 minutes from the start of the PPV. He walks off under his own power- he wasn't hurt or beat badly, so he could easily have grabbed his bags and left at that moment. If he was out there three minutes total, I'd be surprised.

Has there ever been a wrestler who ever had a faster "beat the traffic" moment than that on a major PPV? (i.e. gets eliminated or loses early in the show and doesn't return)?

Yup!  The Rougeaus got bounced from Survivor Series 88 in the opening tag team elimination match due to fears that Jacques was going to get literally murdered by Dynamite Kid due to a prank retaliation.  So they booked it to give the Rougeaus time to get the hell out of the city while the Bulldogs remained in the match for another 30 minutes on their way out of the company.  That's probably the ultimate example of it.

  1. Was that for Jacques cold-cocking Dynamite with a roll of quarters in hand or whatever he had?

  2. Gonna pass on the easy Owen joke here...

Yeah. Hennig cut up the Rougeaus clothes and they blames Dynamite which started a fight. The Rougeaus retaliated by knocking his teeth out with brass knuckles.

The Rougeaus owe Patterson their lives because he saved them that night and Survivor Series.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Yeah, after Curt Hennig went through and cut up Rougeau's gear and blamed it on Kid.

    ReplyDelete
  5. That's not the way Jacques tells it.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Yeah, it is right there.

I'm going off of what's in Dynamite's book.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Little 5'8'' Dynamite Kid was *that* dangerous?

    ReplyDelete
  9. So I'm gonna be that guy.

The tag match at SS '88 is only the opening match if you spent years (like I did) watching the show on the Coliseum Video release, which chopped the actual opener (Warrior-Beefcake Team vs. Honky-Bass Team) into pieces and shifted it to the middle of the show.

But hey, maybe the Rougeaus showed up late, in which case they still had a short night.

    ReplyDelete
  10. People under 6' can be dangerous.

    Just ask the Benoits.

    ReplyDelete
  11. It's basically a case of which lie you wanna believe.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Yup. I just watched this on the network the other night and actually really liked how they had Warrior's team enter as Gorilla and Jesse were still doing the intro at the announcing table.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Dynamite even works with Jacques in the match for a brief moment, twice. Quite bold considering the circumstances, I say.

I always remember the visual of all of the tag teams around all four sides of the ring. They had to use a weird camera angle from high above one of the corners to show the action in the ring, too.

    ReplyDelete
  14. The problem with the story is, Dynamite and Jacques worked with each other during the match.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I have his shoot but havent listened to it yet.

Always want to his hear take on the story

    ReplyDelete
  16. I loved that jib camera they brought in for that match! When the Busters and the Rockers fight on the outside, you can see that it's a full on giant mobile crane. Must have been expensive, or blocked part of the audience, because I could never figure out why they wouldn't use that shot all the time. It was a really unique look.

    ReplyDelete
  17. The opening match of SurSeries 1988 was the Ultimate Warrior's team against Honky's team

    ReplyDelete
  18. Sort of a different thing, but in 1990 Shawn Michaels was injured and couldn't wrestle, so the rockers down for the opening match (against Power & Glory) and had Hercules hit him with the chain before the opening bell, forcing Marty Jannetty to wrestle the whole match.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I believe it was Bret who mentioned in his book that the quarter roll incident badly damaged Dynamite's psyche as he was extremely proud of himself as a tough guy, and to be cold-cocked like that without ever getting his revenge was a huge blow to his ego.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Kinda confused by the question but if what I think it is then Mike Knox lost in seconds to HBK at Survivor Series 2006

    ReplyDelete
  21. Nothing says "easy money" more than Santino's appearance in the Rumble where he got eliminated in 1 second. Not only that, as the record holder for shortest Rumble appearance he's now guaranteed to be in every Rumble DVD which means more royalties for him.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Not knocking the guy, I'm around the same height. You just don't normally hear about them like that.

    Is he Haku-level tough?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Magoonie NOT Teddy BelmontApril 20, 2014 at 11:30 PM

Yeah, Dynamite was that tough. Seeing the stiff shots he gave in matches gives you an idea.

Also look at Pillman, not a big guy in the least but he was apparently a tough little shit. Scared Sid enough to go out to his car to get a fucking skeegee to fight him. But I attribute that more to Sid being a bit of a pussy.

Look at the subject of this post, Bob Holly. Not the biggest guy in the lockeroom but he was attributed as one of the toughest probably just a step or two behind Bradshow and Ron and later Kurt and Brock.

Hell, Jericho beat up Goldberg. Had you asked me before who would obviously win that fight, I would have said Goldberg.

  24. Magoonie NOT Teddy BelmontApril 20, 2014 at 11:34 PM

I recently read The Hardcore Truth and it was sad to hear that Holly and Brock had a solid match planned for The Rumble that would have told a nice story. It's just sad Holly, in his only main event level match wasn't given the time to go out there and have the best match he possibly could.

    ReplyDelete
  25. The idea is not only did the wrestler lose quickly, he wrapped up his involvement in the show so early he could leave and do whatever.

    ReplyDelete
  26. So in fact the game is available on the VC for the low low price of 800 Wii Points. I've actually been playing Super Mario World, one of my favorite games of all time, on the VC again as of late, using a "Nintendo" Classic Controller Pro, and damn if it doesn't nail the control scheme perfectly. Feels totally natural to use the analog stick with it as well, even though the control feels a bit slippery as a result.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Jericho didn't "beat up" Goldberg. In his own words (more or less) he got him in a front facelock and held on for as long as he could, before other wrestlers broke the two up. Hell, Jericho even said that Goldberg eventually would've killed him, but maybe he was just being modest.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Of course everyone was ready to believe it was Dynamite after the million and one other scumbag pranks he had pulled.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I doubt there was any real bad blood between Brock and Holly that it had to be booked short. I think it was a case of Holly not being fully ready so they kept it short so not to expose him.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I do believe this show will be one of the next ones redone now that I have the full version to watch.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'd say Dynamite was dangerous to the point that he could go all psycho on you and kill you, but I wouldn't say he was Haku level tough or anything. Bret mentioned in his book how Dynamite broke his hand punching someone in the fact and desribed his bones as being brittle.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Not sure who was being protected from whom, given that both sides allegedly had mob connections (the Rougeaus on Montreal and Dynamite in Calgary).

    ReplyDelete
  33. It's one of those stories where normally I would feel bad for the guy getting his teeth knocked out that didn't do anything, but Dynamite was a total dick and deserved to have someone beat his ass.

    ReplyDelete
  34. The best Bob Holly match is a short Bob Holly match.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Magoonie NOT Teddy BelmontApril 21, 2014 at 12:19 AM

"prank" here= You got knocked the fuck out!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Has there ever been a bigger asshole in wrestling than Dynamite Kid?

    ReplyDelete
  37. All signs point to him being one of the biggest dicks in company history. Which is saying a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Well, I doubt Knox had to do anything afterwards

    ReplyDelete
  39. Not necessarily. The ritualism/performative aspects of wrestling have often helped guys put aside differences to work a match. Bret/Shawn, for example.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I get it! Cuz they were murdered by a guy under 6 feet!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Magoonie NOT Teddy BelmontApril 21, 2014 at 12:41 AM

To be fair in this story, Dynamite is free of guilt on this one. Henning was the one who cut up Jacques shit then blamed it on Dynamite. Jacques then thinking this is true, with a roll of quarters knocked Dynamite out. Dynamite didn't have a chance to get his revenge because Patterson booked it so the Rougeus could get the hell out of their fast.

But yes, it does sound like in other cases Dynamite was a bit of an asshole. If it helps any, karma got back to him on that. As for biggest asshole in wrestling, I think Chris Benoit tops that list with Snuka running second.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I thought it was actually Perfect messing with Dynamite's stuff, Jacques thinking it was the Bulldogs but not being that worried about it, then Dynamite bullying Jacques and Raymond (who was on crutches at the time), which then led to Jacques KTFOing Dynamite later. I'd argue Dynamite was much more at blame than you'd think.

    ReplyDelete
  43. If 1980s Vince says 'grow up and wrestle' people did it. Few people went against with Vince back then, and if they did (Steamboat etc) they were gone. He was fearsome back then, and if people like Punk/Austin walked out in the 1980s they'd have been fired a second later.

To be honest, they did the right thing. The way Brock had steamrolled through the best of the company, anything other the squash we got I would've rolled my eyes at.

New Jack? Vampiro has to be up there too.

  46. Amsterdam_Adam_CurryApril 21, 2014 at 3:31 AM

    I'm 6'1", now I feel like a pussy.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Weren't there two guys that opened Wrestlemania a couple years in a match that went, what, about 20 seconds?

A kind of obscure moment though. Wonder what happened to those guys?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Or Joe Pesci in Goodfellas and Casino.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I loved that finishing move fro P&G, shocked no one has stolen it.

    ReplyDelete
  50. What made it even worse was one of those guys had a valet/manager gal, if I remember things right. I don't know if that whole scenario did her any favours, either, since she kinda dropped off the face of the earth, too. What were they thinking when they booked that??

    ReplyDelete
  51. Um, he was dating Kelly Kelly (at least in kayfabe) at the time. I'm sure he didn't make any complaints about having a short wrestling night!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Bret Hart was on one of those Legends of Wrestling shows that WWE did (which are awesome) and this came up. He said basically it was a cheap shot but nobody was that upset with Rougeau because Dynamite had been such a bully his entire career. He said he didn't deserve it for what the actual incident was (apparently the Rougeau's blamed DK for padlocking their bags when it was actually Hennig that did it) but deserved it for everything else he had done.

    ReplyDelete
  53. In kayfabe they were dating, in reality he had to wait until CM Punk got done fucking her after the match.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Bradshaw the toughest? The same guy that Joey Styles knocked down? Or the guy that Steve Blackman beat up at an airport.

    ReplyDelete
  55. "Mr. Overdraft" Jef VinsonApril 21, 2014 at 6:08 AM

I saw Joey at an autograph signing. He is NOT a small dude.

    ReplyDelete
  56. "Mr. Overdraft" Jef VinsonApril 21, 2014 at 6:10 AM

That is why in Dynamite's book after the incident he kept talking about how the incident was "still on his mind" before the Survivor Series.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Dynamite slapped Jacques around after he dared to think that he was the cause of the clothes ripping (which was his signature). Jacques was getting bullied constantly so he decided to fight back the best he could.

    ReplyDelete
  58. "Mr. Overdraft" Jef VinsonApril 21, 2014 at 6:11 AM

It has nothing to do with being big. It has to do with not giving a fuck. Like Nick Santoro in Casino you come at him with a knife, he comes at you with a gun. Crazy relentless dudes are the worst because no matter how many time you kick their asses they keep coming back.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Bradshaw was never considered tough. Just a jerk bully. Damn, the guy got knocked out in two public knowledge instances

    ReplyDelete
  60. "Mr. Overdraft" Jef VinsonApril 21, 2014 at 6:14 AM

Then the Bulldogs losing to the Hart Foundation would probably count. Dynamite's back was screwed 12 ways to Sunday.

    ReplyDelete
  61. "Mr. Overdraft" Jef VinsonApril 21, 2014 at 6:19 AM

Patterson knew what was coming and tried to smooth things over. He made Jacques pay for his dental work. Dynamite said (in his book) that he was going to handle the Rougeaus next chance he got. Somehow Patterson caught wind of it and booked the match the way he did,

    ReplyDelete
  62. "Mr. Overdraft" Jef VinsonApril 21, 2014 at 6:23 AM

What is crazy is that Dynamite Kid ADMITTED doing all the shit he did. I thought he was a real fucking asshole when he shot Davey up with a syringe full of milk and told him it was steroids.

    ReplyDelete
  63. There is also a story about the Steiners messing with Jacques in a European cafeteria, and Jacques throwing an apple at them from near point blank range, which hit a post and splattered.

Lesson: DO NOT MESS WITH JACQUES, HE WILL STAND UP TO BULLIES.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I feel bad for Dynamite at this point. He was a huge asshole but karma has squashed him like a bug.

    ReplyDelete
  65. AverageJoeEverymanApril 21, 2014 at 6:33 AM

Super Mario World is one of the most perfect games ever. I still have my Super Nintendo and there are so many games on it that still hold up (especially this, Yoshi's Island, Mega Man X, and Link to the Past). I downloaded the Natsume game and didnt care for it that much actually, though to admit I was pretty drunk when I tried it.

    ReplyDelete
  66. The moral of all these stories: The average wrestler is a complete sociopath with poor toilet training.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Apparently there are like 5 different versions of this story. In Jacques's version, it was retaliation for dynamite jumping him for daring to ask that their matches be switched so that they could make a plane. And then having it announced on a plane intercom the following week.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Fuck that guy he tried to shoot on a huge man with a legitimate fighting background and the maturity of an infant he got exactly what he fucking deserved when Brock dropped him on his head, and didn't deserve the resulting push it got him.

    ReplyDelete
  69. SNES is arguably the greatest system of all time for the sheer volume of awesome games.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I played this years ago for the SNES and it was a great game. Unfortunately, I had rented it and try as I might, I could never find it anywhere to buy.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Love his reviews. Also looking forward to Maffews wrestling video game book as well
