Now it's the Fall? First on launch day, next it was Summer, now it is Fall. They have all the stuff done already for 24/7. I hope WWE takes a huge hit with subscribers leaving in August because all they've done is lie.

ReplyDeletehmm, I seem to still be missing SNME, any of the WWF syndicated shows, any of the WCW syndicated shows, Primetime, SMW, AWA, some of the Raws, lots of the ECW shows, some of the WCCW, etc. For someone who never ordered the ppvs, I'm paying 10 bucks for older content. At a certain point I run out of WCW ppvs to catch up on.

ReplyDeleteCouple thoughts (outside of Vince Jordan being a complete douche). Do we think they are merely delaying it to try and sucker people into signing up for 6 more months or are they filming a bunch of talking heads for each week's "battle" and possibly doing a pop up video style thing? Either way it is probably a mistake IMO. I really have no interest in hearing Steve Lombardi give his thoughts on the Monday Night wars and the timing of when they put it up should be interesting. If they put it up one week before the renewal, I think people get pissed and feel like they have been gamed. At the same time if they wait until after the renewal, advertising it as a reason to renew, I think they lose a lot of people as well. I would suggest they would be better off putting it up atleast 4-6 weeks prior to the renewal date. Give fans a chance to see it is there and get into watching it, but don't make people feel like they were getting yanked around.
ReplyDeleteI know many folks around here talk about the easy savings on the network vs. 2 ppvs and I get that, but I also suggest that the absolute EASIEST subscribers to keep around are the ones who do care about older content. The stuff is already paid for and in many cases sanitized for our protection from 24/7. Get it up and make people happy. While putting up SMW or AWA probably won't get you a single new subscriber from the current WWE universe, it may very well keep some existing folks who aren't really into the current product but love the old content.
I know! I was so looking forward to the duel between Prince Oberon and the Mountain. I've read the books so I know what happens but can't wait to see how they portray it...

I am anxiously awaiting the inclusion of the WWF syndicated stuff. I know that seems like a strange thing to wait for, but that's my childhood, folks!
ReplyDeletethat is what I'm wondering. Are they adding a bunch of talking head commentary? Pop up video style soundbites to tell us about what was going on in the world each week? Even at that it couldn't take more than a few weeks to get that stuff together. It's not like you have to get the talking heads to watch every episode. Just remind them of the key events and let them make a soundbite. I can't imagine they are going to have a 30 minute roundtable discussion of each and every week. Even for the diehards like me that would be a bit over the top.

ReplyDeleteFor me, whether or not i renew is going to be that older content you're talking about. I was jazzed to watch some world class at first, but was frustrated that they would go and skip weeks at a time, and now they haven't even added anything new in weeks. Checking out the old ECW would be fun too, but I see two or three episodes skipped at a time and I don't even want to bother.

Right now I can do that with Raw and that era but not with WCW or earlier WWF stuff. ECW is missing a bunch of weeks as is WCCW (although the WCCW stuff just isn't doing much for me, hard to believe guys like Checkmate, Al Madril, and Bugsy McGraw were featured week after week).

ReplyDeletebesides the guys that got over in the WWF at a later time (although obviously not everyone to the same extent) like Hunter or Bob Holly you also had several guys like Hakushi, Jean Pierre Lafitte, Skip or Rad Radford - many of which could have been a lot bigger deal if they were only portrayed differently.

If WWE delivered everything on Day 1 - All PPVs, Clashes, SNME and syndicated TV shows, plus some of the new content - everyone here would be complaining that they didn't leave anything for renewals in 6 months.

ReplyDeleteThey said from the beginning that they were going to stagger the addition of content, which is what they've done. SNME is coming this summer. Monday Night Wars comes after that.
They'll likely have a bunch of content added right before renewals come up, much like any similar business would do. I really don't see what the problems are, outside of a "I want it now" mentality.

I'm fine with the rate that things are coming out and I dunno, it's nice looking foward to something and/or being surprised when something pops up like Clash. We have EVERY PPV, that has to be enough for now.

How are we as fans supposed to know what to expect from the Network,though? They give no communication on any of this stuff. Some shows are released close to daily (like the early RAW), some sporadically while skipping weeks (like WCCW and ECW), some on a regular schedule on the live stream (like Legends House and NXT) and then some are just dumped into the vault all at once (like Clash of the Champions). And it's OUR fault for getting upset when we can't figure out their wacky release schedule?

I think that would be awesome (although I too don't really expect them to do it)... just have a roundtable of three "WCW guys" and three "WWF guys" and let them discuss each weeks episodes (you could easily rotate participants to make it more interesting by also putting some focus on something other than the "main feuds", for example by bringing in two mid- or undercard workers as well).

ReplyDeleteHonestly, as a Netflix subscriber, I'm used to it. I never know what they're posting or when. And it's more egregious with them, because I used to be able to go to certain sites to see what was coming up, and the company charged their algorithm so I can't do that anymore.
ReplyDeleteAs far as I can tell, in the last few months, WWE has added more content to the Network than Netflix has to its streaming site. I don't know if it's any better in Canada, but I'm more likely to can Netflix than the WWE Network.

If things go south in August, then we'll see if things are really all that dire, but for right now, they have close to 700,000 people locked in until August or September.
ReplyDeleteI don't know, but Michael Cole does compare it to Netflix, which, as your posts indicate, does cycle content on/off without warning. Given that WWE owns most content, it might not be as much of an issue unless it thinks it can save money by pulling shows that have few viewers.

But with no announcement that they may even consider doing that, I think it's negative speculation to urge on the people who seem to be hell bent on bashing the Network.

ReplyDeleteWhere the fuck were we heading? Wrestling was SO AWFUL and went to very fucking spectacular in a few short years. Yah there's more reasons why, but damn did we ever get LUCKY with them Monday Night Wars saving wrestling.
Oh and to a degree killing it, with the death of WCW and ECW, effectively creating a watered down monopoly that has been stale for a decade now.

ReplyDeleteAlthough Netflix also has the benefit of 30 million subscribers and a greater amount of goodwill with the customer base built up, so things like cycling out content and raising their price $1 are less of an issue for them. WWE is in a much more precarious position from a public relations standpoint, obviously.

I mean, we're at the point now that they're advertising the location of the following year's WrestleMania BEFORE the current year's event has even taken place. As noted by others, saying "this thing is coming in the future!" is nothing unique. And for that matter, saying "This thing is coming next May" and then not delivering it until next December is fairly common in the entertainment industry. Titanic -- one of the most successful films of all time -- was supposed to premiere in July of 1997 but didn't actually get released until December of that year. This is not unusual.

ReplyDeleteIMO they're not using the live feed to its potential. The Clashes could have been streamed over several Thursdays to hype them up and keep people watching. If WWE want people to give the Network good word of mouth to friends they might be better advertising and showcasing their content.
ReplyDeleteI've been watching all the 1999 WWF ppvs in a row and other than the insanity of the constantly changing storylines the one thing that jumps out to me is his how many jobs the big show does. Sure its never clean but I've watched the first 7 out of the 14 shows and hes never come out on top of anything.
ReplyDeleteI was personally looking forward to the Monday Night Wars show. I envisioned each episode taking on a 4-8 week period with all of the major moves, counter programming, and talking heads discussing each company's mindset. Then, they'd show a match or two from the time period.
ReplyDeleteIf they are hellbent on making the network a success, WWE should be focusing on keeping customers happy. A smooth operation will satisfy customers, increase positive word of mouth, and impress new and potentially new (via free trials) fans/customers. But the arguments remain the same:
1. Deliver on what was promised four months ago, including the Monday Night Wars show.
2. Start showing Prime Time and WCW Saturday Night. Is this a case of fans asking for too much? Maybe. But I'm surprised that it's a damn near unanimous demand or craving from long time fans. No matter what message board, blog, or podcast you listen to, those are the two shows people mention first. It could still take years to roll out the full catalog of these shows and people would still be happy that a couple of shows are released each week. Make it happen and create wrestling heaven.
3. As Scott was saying, maintain a schedule and post announcements. There have been times when the schedule didn't go past five or ten days. That's kind of sad. It's also kind of depressing knowing that it's likely a bare bones operation.

ReplyDeleteThe ECW one is frustrating because you don't have the supercards until they hit PPV in '97. I tried working my way through '94 and got up to the Sandman/Dreamer cane blinding angle which was beautifully done...then they skip like three weeks of TV and suddenly they're both in different feuds. I'm left pissed and wondering how the blow-off unfolded because I wasn't a fan of ECW until early '96.

ReplyDeletetell me a similar business that does this. Netflix adds content when it becomes available (as in when the new season starts, last year's season goes up COMPLETELY, not on the day of the month with the most renewals). I'm honestly curious what other business does this.

ReplyDeletegood point. You had the early adopters, probably filled with folks looking for old content and then you had the WM subscribers, sold mostly on the ppv savings (but possibly now hooked on other content, we dont know)

ReplyDeleteI think that is why it is taking so long, getting all the interviews done. I hope they show the full episodes while pausing to talk about whatever important stuff happened that week.

ReplyDeletetrue enough but I don't think anyone was expecting shortened versions of house shows, particularly ones already shown on 24/7. I think plenty of people thought the stuff on 24/7 would be put up on the network pretty quickly. However no they did not specifically promise specific older content, rather promising to be constantly adding stuff. My definition of constantly adding stuff jut appears to be different than the WWE's definition.
ReplyDeleteehh, maybe I underestimate the amount of people who would like that. For me I think i would tire of it week after week. Only so many times you can talk about why Sting was kept in the rafters for 8 months. I'm just not sure there is enough interesting stuff to talk about for every single week.

ReplyDeleteI enjoyed him a lot when he was doing color commentary on ECW, so I've always been more sympathetic to him. Going back and watching some of the PPVs he did is pretty cringeworthy, though. He was the definition of trying too hard.
