In Your House I is on the live stream today. I remember watching this show when it aired live, and of course, the opening match between Bret Hart and Hakushi was a damn good one. Scott's original rating for this match was ***3/4, but I would rate it slightly higher. Anyone have any opinions on this show?
Also, beginning next week, the Network thread is being bumped to the evening in an effort to give the BoDers a thread to go to when most of us are at home. It just doesn't have to be Saturday night that gets the thread. EVERY night can have one.

  4. 1)Well, in 1994 WCW was losing money at a record rate. Flair's run since Starrcade had flopped hideously. Turner was seriously considering shutting down WCW entirely. Bischoff and Okerlund persuaded Hogan to come in. Turner's word was that it was basically a choice between WCW existing with Hogan as champion, or WCW being shut down. Of course, Hogan got to dictate the terms of his contract., and bring all his friends in. But it was either that or NO WCW AT ALL. Which would have meant no Nitro, no nWo, no Goldberg, and by extension no MSG Curtain Call and no Montreal Screwjob.

Those iPPV's WCW offered were audio-only shows.

    WE'RE OUT OF TIME!!

    ReplyDelete
  9. So you say 1994 WCW was losing money at a record rate, yet Scott, back in 1998, said Flair was "drawing like crazy as a babyface" in that early 1994 run. So which was it?

    ReplyDelete
  10. WCW had many types of cages around 1990. Why? They had the Thundercage, the bar cage from the Clash with Horsemen vs. Muta's team, the mesh cage...

    ReplyDelete
  11. Losing. In fact prior to Hogan WCW only ever lost money. I think it was 1995 with Hogan on top that was the first time ever that WCW made a profit rather than a loss.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I'm more inclined to agree with you here, but I'm curious as to whether there's a way to validate that or not. Maybe some of the other lemmings here have some insight.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I have a hard time beliving WCW lost more money in early 1994 than they did in 1993.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Remember, shitty wrestling is not equivalent to losing money, and good wrestling is not equivalent to making money. Hogan-Andre at WrestleMania III wasn't exactly a MOTYC, but it drew big money. Meanwhile, the dudes in ROH put on great match after great match in front of 4 people.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I almost believed you for a second.

    ReplyDelete
  16. WCW wasn't wasting a bunch of money on terrible mini movies. WCW made more money on PPVs in early 1994 than they did in early 1993:

    SuperBrawl III: 0.50
    Slamboree. '93: 0.50
    SuperBrawl IV: 0.50
    Spring Stampede: 0.54
    Slamboree '94: 0.48

I wouldn't be shocked if Turner threatened to pull the plug in 1993, but 1994 seems a little fishy.

    ReplyDelete
  17. so Superbrawl is the same, and Slamboree is down. But what about house shows and merchandise sales?

    ReplyDelete
  18. I remember nothing about these ippvs from WCW and am really curious to see them. Where they seriously audio only?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Spring Stampede is extra revenue and the 12,000 in attendance was HUGE for WCW. Merchandise sales were never big and attendance was basicly a wash.

I love 1994 WCW, so I'm not exactly partial on this.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I remember stories where in 1994 WCW would get homeless guys off the street and give them free beer, just so long as they stayed in their seats so the cameras showed butts in seats. They often pissed themselves or fell asleep, but at least there were people in the seats.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Wow I can't recall ever hearing about the iPPV thing.

Flair coming over to fight Austin in that time frame would have been GOLD.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Stranger in the AlpsMay 29, 2014 at 8:14 AM

    I was being serious.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think we can all agree that in hindsight, it turned out a million times better to have the Rock become that corporate champ.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I've never heard that story, but I wouldn't be surprised if most of the Starrcade '94 were bums off the street.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I don't think that WCW ever made any profit other than maybe a couple of years during the NWO run.

"Drawing like crazy" from Keith in 98 was (probably) a lot more a reflection of his own personal enjoyment, and sketchy rumour, rather than any particular numbers based statement.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hogan's opponent at that show was a bum off the street.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Stranger in the AlpsMay 29, 2014 at 8:23 AM

$7.95 pay-per-listen. 12,000 people bought it, and only 300 could listen. The server crashed at some point, and they offered refunds.

    ReplyDelete
  28. So you were being serious for a minute?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Please tell me they were made in a sound studio. That would be so WCW!

    ReplyDelete
  30. So the entire audio feed was Tony ignoring the matches and talking about Sting and the NWO, and deeming it the best Pay Per Listen ever?

It would be hilarious to get old timey 40's and 50's radio stars to impersonate Goldberg and Chris Benoit, while they simulate the sound of a suplex hitting the mat.

  40. Can you imagine if you had JR and Heyman on commentary for something like this..best PPV ever it would have been 5 star after 5 star match no matter who was in the ring.
Though in fairness I used to listen to PPVs on the scrambled ppv channel when I was a kid if my parents wouldn't buy that one for me.

    ReplyDelete
  44. AverageJoeEverymanMay 29, 2014 at 8:48 AM

yeah I think Bret vs Hakushi is **** hell of a match, then at a later IYH Bret's match vs Jean Pierre was right around ****. The only problem is Jean Pierre only had one eye that a tear could be coming from.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I prefer the bar cage

    ReplyDelete
  46. In one of the Guest Bookers, Sullivan explains that the Dungeon was a blatant attempt to cater to Hogan's tastes, so that he could earn Hulk's trust and eventually get him into angles that Sullivan wanted. I know that *sounds* like a blatant CYA job, but considering that Sullivan did get Hogan into more advanced stuff in the first year of Nitro, it sounds plausible to me. Who knows, maybe without the Dungeon Hogan never agrees to turn heel.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I love old time radio, so the idea of Johnny Dollar reffing an NWO match just makes me mark out.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I would've rather have had Austin/Flair during summer/fall 98 than Austin vs. Kane/Taker and all of those horrible matches. Then you could transition to Rock.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Re: homeless guys, I think they're confusing WCW with Global.

Another thing about this era is that when Bischoff took over, he got Turner to pay WCW rights fees for programming, which had never been done. That was a huge influx of cash. Also, we can make fun of the Disney tapings all we want, but they saved WCW a boatload of money.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I asked Scott about this yesterday and he said he was probably incorrect when he said that

    ReplyDelete
  51. Yeah, I don't buy this. As long as Turner was in power, WCW was going to have a home on television. And as we know, once Turner was out, even Hogan couldn't save the company.

    ReplyDelete
  52. "And, oh my god, it's a suplex on the floor!"

*Foley engineer picks up a slab of raw liver, and slaps it onto the floor"

"Did you hear his body smack off the concrete?!"

    ReplyDelete
  53. Hell Jack Beny and Rochester would have been nWo

    ReplyDelete
  54. And wasn't that because they had Hogan's contract in the Turner Home Video department?

    ReplyDelete
  55. Yep, and since this was 1993, I'd say only 0.0001% of the fanbase had any idea that it was pre recorded months in advance. So that really wasn't a big deal at all.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Magoonie NOT Teddy BelmontMay 29, 2014 at 9:16 AM

Watching a RAW from 2006, Cena comes out to get his rematch clause from Edge. Lita comes out and all but says Edge sent her over to Vince's office to give him a blowjob to push the rematch to the Rumble. Who booked that, Jesse Baker?

  59. People that know that CEO's are likely to do things for hot women that blow them?

I agree though. I have to be careful not to get too wrapped up in BoD posting at work or I won't get anything done.

    ReplyDelete
  61. "Oh, Rochester?"
    "YES BOSS"
"Can you do the survey tonight? I'm still tuning my violin."
"YES BOSS. HEY YOU! I WANNA KNOW HOW MANY OF YOU ARE HERE TO SEE WCW?"
    booooo...
"AND HOW MANY ARE HERE TO SEE THE NWO?"
    yaaaaayyyy...
    "HOW'S THAT, MISTAH BENNY?"
"Fine, fine, Rochester. Here's two dollars- get me one of those nice shirts with the logo on it."
"MISTAH BENNY? THOSE SHIRTS ARE $19.95 PLUS TAX AND SHIPPING!"
"Why, that's highway robbery! I'm going to have to take it out on that no-good rabble-rouser Sting tonight. Oh, I do hope he doesn't drop from the rafters again."

Saw X-Men:Days of Future Past last night, fantastic movie. Probably the best X-Men movie. I was really surprised by this since I felt nothing but apathy to every X-Men movie after 2. The action wasn't as good as Avengers but the story was better.

Saw an old WWE Confidental segment on Lita and her work with animals. It was really sweet and makes up for the fact that every man that's had sex with her has a rotten penis now.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Watching King of the Ring 2002 and man was the Noble/Nydia act so much fun at the start. Nydia pulled off the white trash shore character quite well and Noble was entertaining as her dirtbag boyfriend.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I might actually check out Legends House if Shawn is making a cameo. I only lasted through the first episode.

    ReplyDelete
  69. If Ric Flair comes in fall '98 what happens to the Rock at Survivor Series? Does he still turn heel and win the strap? Hell is the strap even vacant? Anyone who was around in '98 remembers all the rumours of new guys being brought in to have a main event program with Austin from Dr.Death to Lord Steven Regal to yes even Ric Flair as the WWF realized there was only so many times they could run Austin with Taker,Kane & Mick Foley.

If HHH never got hurt at Summerslam i felt he'd be a natural corporate champ and the De-Generate sell out angle would have drawn big against Stone Cold. Maybe team Trips up with Ric Flair? Ric And Austin feud while HHH and Rock go at it again but this time over the Big Belt?

    ReplyDelete
  70. Just watched some of the 06 Raw, shocking to see getting those reactions 8 years prior, and man, was Angle gold in that tag match.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I highly doubt this story.

    ReplyDelete
  72. As others have said, the internet pay-per-views were actually pay-per-listens, as they were audio only. At one of them, though, a fan was able to sneak a camera in and that recording is floating around (I want to say it's Boston Brawl, but I could be wrong).

    ReplyDelete
  73. The big deal was less about spoilers and more about WCW being forced into plans that wouldn't/couldn't come to fruition, like taking the titles off the Blonds and then Pillman gets hurt. They got better at hiding that stuff after a few months of upheaval.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Did you have to pay for these audio only ppvs? Because that sounds awful.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I think it's L.A. melee that has video. Iv seen the caps of it (Sting/Hogan cage match). Idk I gotta check

Alto of those I took on faith from what we saw in past movies, Magneto using his powers at the end of X3, Proffesor X being "alive" at the end of X3 but yeah, a few things could have used a quicky one line explanation. As for Wolvies claws, I actually just assumed when I saw The Wolverine that they just fixed Wolverines claws with the adiantum they had lying around from the giant sword or they found his claws and did it that way. But again, yes, a quicky explanation would have been good. I want to get into more of it but I don't want to spoil the movie for anybody.

Either way it didn't lessen my enjoyment of the movie at all.
