Beau James Birthday Bash!

Courtesy of Joe Briggs superfan Josh Rose (a.k.a. Joe Briggs), here is the main event of last night's Southern States Wrestling Beau James Birthday Bash!

Not only did Joe Briggs and Jake Booth somehow survive the six-man war just a few days earlier, but on this night they would do battle over the most prestigious trophy in wrestling.  And to my utter amazement, Briggs carried Booth to a two-star match with a shocking conclusion!

It's also good seeing Daniel Bryan up and about, bringing his own chair to watch the match ringside.

  1. Every time I see indy crowds like this I wonder if it's hard to work in front of like 15-20 people and still want to put on a good match.

  2. I watched the match... I guess the concussion happens at the 845 spot? I just thought it was some great selling for a bit. Then go back and watching the guy convulse is just scary. Can't believe they went another 12 minutes after that, with a couple crazy highspots.

  3. It's interesting that the tournament is called "climax," as that would be Meltzer's reaction to watching it, AMIRITE?!

    Wow what a crowd!

  5. Those first couple of minutes were scary to watch, as you can CLEARLY see that Ibushi is just not there. At all.

  6. They did. But only for Viscera for some reason.

    ReplyDelete
  7. That's exactly what they did in the Gimmick Battle Royal.

Everyone teamed up and threw out Gilberg.

I mean, he was the most obvious threat.

  8. You know, this gives me an idea for a tag team angle. I'm sure it's been used before, but I can't think of an instance of it, off hand.

One team member is out for awhile with an injury, but they decide the team name is too marketable to just shuffle away, so someone else takes the spot of the injured member. To make things less confusing, let's add names. Let's say Big E and Kofi form a pretty successful tag team, though they keep choking at title shots. Kofi gets injured, so they sub him with Sami Zayn..

Well, it turns out Zayn's addition makes for an even better team, to the point that they win the titles.

Then Kofi returns from his injury and wants to come back. But of course, he's shunned because now the team is better than ever. So he turns heel and boom, you have a midcard feud between Zayn, Kofi, and Big E.

  9. The indy worker's paradox: be good enough to possibly get an invite to a bigger organization without injuring yourself for 30 yokels. Of course most of these dumb marks in the locker room (tm Dutch Mantell) just go kill themselves anyway.

  10. So Zayn is Tom Brady/Colin Kaepernick, while Kofi is Drew Bledsoe/Alex Smith?

    ReplyDelete
  11. The "OH GOD!" as he comes crashing down really sells it!

  12. For a kid without cable and no ability to watch a pay-per-view, this show WAS Wrestlemania for me. And it didn't disappoint. Still one of my favorite wrestling shows, ever.

  13. It sucks, but i'm glad to see NJPW is taking concussions seriously.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I have no idea who any of those guys are.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Oh no! I didn't realize he was hurt this badly! Ibushi is one of my absolute favorite wrestlers, but I sincerely hope he's able to take some time to heal and not rush back. This is the scariest kind of injury.

  16. To quote Sandler's mom in "Waterboy", they're Foozeball players.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Ah. That explains why. The closest I ever got to watching sports is pro-wrestling.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I hear you on that point man. When I started watching wrestling in 1996, it was pure WWF Superstars--squash matches and occasional "big matches" like Smoking Gunns vs Godwinns. Then one Saturday afternoon, on my local CTV affiliate, I stumbled across Monday Night Raw. It was Shawn Michaels vs Owen Hart. THE CHAMP was wrestling on TV!! Against a non-jobber! I thought I had died and gone to heaven.

  19. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

    NJPW,put Tomoaki Homna there.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Mcmahon would slap you for daring to call it a sport!!!

But anyway, basically the exact scenario happened to those guys, they were leading a good team, got injured, then a replacement brought them to the Super bowl. So the other guy got traded.

  21. You always remember your first.

    ReplyDelete
  22. So sad. Hoping Ibushi has a speedy recovery.

I know someone who's contract just expired that they could put in there....................................................................

    ReplyDelete
  23. I just watched this show ans remembered how much of a Billy Jack Haynes fan I was. I was so pissed when he lost the battle royal!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Your problem here is that Sami isn't a dancing black man so he'd never be considering as a teammate for Big E. Now had you said Xavier Woods...

    ReplyDelete
  25. I was just about to post the same thing TPrincess said. Some of the most beloved divas started as valets.. A great way to get over. I don't understand why the WWE doesn't do it more often.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Right now: Lana, Emma, Layla
Within the past year: Summer Rae, Funkadactyls

    That's not enough?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Not my first SNME -- but the one I remember my dad letting me stay up for or had he taped it?

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'm not that creeped out by that iteration of Mr. McMahon discussing the beauty of Elizabeth. He's never saying like, "Oh man what a hot bitch, the things I'd do to her." Elizabeth was treated like a religious figure in that stretch of WWE lore. Some kind of Persephone figure. Savage was, let's say, Hades, and Vince played the role of the Greek chorus. Hogan, ironically, was Zeus!

    ReplyDelete
  29. That's bad because mostly those crowds will just be quiet or distract themselves during a bad match

    ReplyDelete
  30. Yeah, Hogan vs. Andre was the selling point, everything else was secondary. And let's be real: was there *anybody* who may have been on the fence about buying WM3, who then declared, "Well, Andre didn't win the battle royal. I have no faith in him. I'll pass." ? Seriously?

Also, Andre's health being what it was, best to have him do what he needs to go and get him out of there. For a number of reasons it's best not to give away too much of the Giant on free TV.

I've seen promotions work in front of 5-10 and bust their asses still. The next show there was about 50 via word of mouth in the small town.

  32. It's only a sport when comparing DVD sales.

    ReplyDelete
  33. That's where WWE's medical stuff is ahead of the curve. They'd have cut the match short when it was clear he was hurt.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yeah, I guess they wanted to compromise...make people interested in Herc vs. BJH, but also push what Andre said after the match: "It took 7 wrestlers to take one giant out of the ring, but it took one giant to get Hulk Hogan out of the ring."

    ReplyDelete
  35. And here's a future tip: buzzcut Smash WAS Darsow. There's probably confusion because he was letting his hair grow out, and because the Demos' face paint was different.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Forget his reactions to Liz, what about Vince's commentary as Andre heads to the ring? Where it sounds like he is on the verge of tears. I can still quote parts of his diatribe to this day.

    ReplyDelete
  37. They could have done that with Kofi, R-Truth, and Even Bourne if they ever cared about Evan Bourne.

    ReplyDelete
  38. That was a cool quote. I was pulling for Andre to beat Hogan.

    ReplyDelete
  39. *evil smile*

    Yes,there is someone.

Zanatude, you are my favourite writer on the blog. I've mulled it over and I think I'm ready to make the change from Bayless to you.

  41. Thanks, mate. I'm an acquired taste, like Vegemite.

I kid you not, I'm eating some right now

    ReplyDelete
  44. Yeah, we're about 48 hours away from Tanahashi vs. Honma.. I can't complain about that!

    ReplyDelete
  45. So noone should be surprised that a Frank Sinatra song got edited out, but the Roddy Piper tribute at the ned of the show is so much better this way...
