Evening Thread - Sunday Edition

Tonight, on the Network live stream, it's Summerslam '92. Also, the Ricky Steamboat doc was uploaded to the library last night, if you didn't catch it.

MLB Sunday night action sees the Dodgers take on the Giants, with just half a game separating the two in the NL West. Jake Peavy makes his Giants debut in this one.

True Blood and The Leftovers on HBO, SyFy features Sharkmania: The Top 15 Biggest Baddest Bloodiest Bites.

I'm just fishing for stuff. It's your thread about nothing!

Peavy debut for the Giants? I hope its a good thing I have fake internet bucks on the Dodgers, based solely off a comment here about them playing good lately.

Above the Rim is on the Centre channel.

  3. Summerslam '92 is a great show. Stadium atmosphere, the classic Bret/Davey match, Savage/Warrior, HBK/Martel, Piper showing up, Taker on the hearse and some neat curiosities like Demolition facing off in their respective new gimmicks.

    And don't forget ROCCO.

  8. MikeyMike, WitnessJuly 27, 2014 at 6:21 PM

It's a basketball movie. Awesome movie IMO.

Tupac had some great acting chops. I don't think a lot of people realize today that had he not died he probably would have phased out of rap and had a bigger acting career.

  9. It falls in that category of movies I must watch if I catch it on tv. Best soundtrack EVER. Yeah, even that SWV song.

  30. Yeah, I'm not anti-Reigns by any means, but I don't think he's really ready for this year-long singles push to WrestleMania. Putting him with Orton is also not the best way to teach a singles guy you want to get over. Orton's not awful, but he can't carry a match.

    ReplyDelete
  31. ...though putting him with Orton is a nice way for HHH to go over him at NoC...."he's a little green, season him up and I'll put him over next year" (next year never comes)

    ...damn tinfoil hat's tight

    ReplyDelete
  32. Thanks Jake Peavy for the two top 10 prospects you netted us.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Holy shit why were the bushwhackers ever popular? They annoy me to no end, even as a kid.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Haha, I can just see an Internet implosion on a NoC card that has Cena go over Brock and HHH over Reigns.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Anyone catch the leaked Batman-Superman teaser from Comic-Con? I'm nervous about how the movie will turn out, but even that short teaser got me stoked.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I think it was because they were unique and wild. I admit that as a kid I liked the Bushwhackers. I now recognize that their WWF ring work was mostly horrible, but as a small kid you don't really pay attention to that stuff because you get so engrossed in whether your guys are winning or losing.

    ReplyDelete
  41. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryJuly 27, 2014 at 6:34 PM

It was definitely interesting to at least see them in the same clip. As meh as I was on Man of Steel, BvS will definitely have my interest, but they better not fuck it up, by which I mean Zack Snyder. We have to at least get an actual Batman v Superman showdown.

James Rolfe does a way superior Shark countdown on the Cinemassacre site. This thing on Syfy will be clips of their crappy TV movies.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I actually loved Man of Steel (yeah, I know I'm in the minority). So when I heard they were doing this, I was totally pumped. It feels like they're trying to cram too many characters into it and rush their own version of the Marvel Universe, but if they pull this off, it's gonna be epic.

    ReplyDelete
  53. What happened to Tony Shaloub's character should've been in a movie. And Kurt Angle ruled.

Can't imagine their Summerslam match going more than 10 years

    ReplyDelete
  61. Awesome promo. That match was the shit too. **** 1/2 for me easy. The psychology was off the charts

    ReplyDelete
  62. He's gold in almost every segment he's in. When Tim Meadows calls and Leon answers Larry's phone, it's one of my favorite scenes ever in that show.

"Barack Obama, baby. I'm the president of hittin' that ass."

The conversation about the stain on the blanket is awesome too.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I like his feud with Nostalgia Critic.

    ReplyDelete
  64. What makes that movie interesting is that Captain America 3 comes out the same day, and coming off the hype of the Winter Soldier and Age of Ultron, that's going to be an interesting weekend box office wise.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  66. Shitty wrestling aside, it's their insistence on running around like retards and licking people in the face that pisses me off.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I gave the Warrior-Savage match over **** it was very good, about as good as it could be without a decisive ending. If Warrior was supposed to win and go heel it might have been a landmark type of moment. But he went Warrior instead.

    ReplyDelete
  68. CruelConnectionNumber2July 27, 2014 at 6:41 PM

Yeah, that Shark Movie countdown they did is badass. So insightful, those guys are the best at their craft.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Fingers crossed neither budges. Would see Cap first but would be a great double dip

    ReplyDelete
  70. That might just be a see one Friday night, and one Saturday night deal

    ReplyDelete
  71. I wish we'd gotten heel Warrior. I can't really fathom him as a heel, but he was batshit crazy enough where that character could've had a ton of legs. It would've made 1993 WWF a very, very interesting place.

    ReplyDelete
  72. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryJuly 27, 2014 at 6:42 PM

WB is gonna move off it. They have waaaay too much riding on this movie and what it's setting up to have any of its opening weekend audience by cannibalized by Cap. Another summer movie is gonna leave a slot and they'll move it there.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I liked how Cole knew he would not out wrestle Kyle, instead he southern heel trying to find a opening on his offense. I really like him more in PWG than in ROH, he seems to have more fun in there.

    ReplyDelete
  74. In defense of Reigns, Batista was still pretty shitty singles wise in 2004.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I really cannot pick one. He's just got waaaaaaaayyyyy too many songs. Gun to my head I go something off "Me Against the World"

    ReplyDelete
  76. True, true. Even his 2005 work was nothing to really write home about. I think a 2-year build for Reigns might be better than one, but this is the impatient WWE we're talking about.

    ReplyDelete
  77. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryJuly 27, 2014 at 6:44 PM

Well, he did heel after his career.

    ReplyDelete
  78. If Batman/Superman is anything close to decent, it'll destroy. It's Batman vs. Superman for christ's sake.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Although not a song to jam to, Brenda's Got a Baby has some deep lyrics.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Yea he's alot more free and doesn't get tied down to what ROH expects of him, especially with the tv deal. In PWG he just tells everyone to suck his dick and then cock-bangs Candice's face midmatch cause he's awesome

    ReplyDelete
  81. Having a heel champion like that aligned with Perfect & Flair could have been amazing and really changed the course of where the WWF went.

    ReplyDelete
  82. If anything, Batista was MORE rushed than Reigns seemed to be. By this time in 2004, Orton was getting the rocket push and main eventing Mania against Triple H, while Batista was still just a regular old henchman. It was by late December where WWE realized that Orton was bombing and Batista started getting reactions.

    ReplyDelete
  83. His ROH/PWG gimmick is the same but in PWG there are some sublte things that he does that make him way more entertaining, the fact that in PWG he really thinks he's God gift to wrestling and women.

    ReplyDelete
  84. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryJuly 27, 2014 at 6:45 PM

I dunno, we're in a world where Iron Man -- which was definitely not an A-list hero pre movie -- is a bigger box office draw than Supes. It will, but they're gonna need to maximize profit on this one, so it would be smarter to just move down the summer to a less competitive weekend. Universal did a smart thing with "Lucy"; once it picked up good buzz, they took it out of the GotG/Expendables/TMNT dogfight and placed it in a weak July weekend and cleaned up. You can't kill your ceiling, esp. when you're still trying to establish your universe.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Eh, Superman movies haven't exactly blown up the box office.

  87. MikeyMike, WitnessJuly 27, 2014 at 6:46 PM

Astonishing that he's been in charge of two world series champions.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Superman by himself is boring. Batman makes him, and everything else, interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  89. If Warrior goes heel at Summerslam, do you burn towards Hart-Warrior at WMIX?

    ReplyDelete
  90. Batman is CM Punk, Superman is John Cena.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Very true. I would have to assume with a heel Warrior as champion that means no Bret title victory in the fall of '92. Maybe Bret goes over Warrior at WrestleMania IX?

    ReplyDelete
  92. I would think you have to...UNLESS the returning Hulk Hogan wanted to run Warrior-Hogan II @ Caesar's Palace.

    ReplyDelete
  93. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryJuly 27, 2014 at 6:48 PM

Even then, it's building off of Man of Steel, which was very polarizing (it didn't hold well after opening weekend), whereas Cap 3 is coming off the goodwill from Avengers 2 and Cap 2 and will have great momentum of its own. There's little to gain and a lot of lose by trying to go head-to-head if you're WB/DC.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Agreed. I usually go to the early Thursday night showings for all the superhero movies, and I'd have a tough time deciding which one to see. But I agree with Bobby that if Supes-Batman is anywhere near decent, it'll probably win the weekend.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Favorite Nicolas Cage film in serious standarts?

    ReplyDelete
  96. I think Hogan goes over Warrior at IX. Because Warrior would have been the first true monster heel champion. An unbeatable type so they would had to have had a larger-than-life type to overcome him. So Hogan or Undertaker would be my best bet.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Does The Rock count?

    ReplyDelete
  98. Daniel Bryan is Spider-man.

    ReplyDelete
  99. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryJuly 27, 2014 at 6:49 PM

    ReplyDelete
  100. Don't compare Bryan to those recent shitty Spider-Man films.

    ReplyDelete
  101. I give the prize for Bringing out the dead.

    ReplyDelete
  102. I think it would have been hard for a character that plays it straight like Bret to feud with someone as insane as Warrior. Savage on the other hand, that would be right up his alley

    ReplyDelete
  103. Who's The Rock? Who's Austin?

    ReplyDelete
  104. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryJuly 27, 2014 at 6:50 PM

That's a good choice as well.

    ReplyDelete
  105. That makes sense. In some respects, if Bret doesn't get that title win in '92 he may never have gotten it. Warrior-Undertaker would've been terrible as a match, but would've sold as an attraction. Plus, we would've avoided Giant Gonzalez!

    ReplyDelete
  106. Comic book version Spider-man, not that hipster.

I don't remember too many good Cage films, but hes such a campy actor. That usage of him in one of the GRindhouse trailers would be perfect, but he really needs to be surrounded with a good plot. The only good Cage film I remember off the top of my head was the arms dealing one.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Son, understand one thing. Batman wins, it doesn't matter if is Chuck Norris, Tommy Oliver, Predator, he will win.

    ReplyDelete

    Rock is Iron Man.

    ReplyDelete
  119. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryJuly 27, 2014 at 6:52 PM

But you're still eating into your possible box office even if you do win; there's only so much money to go around and MCU/Cap is a very strong brand. Even if it "loses", it won't be by much and anything they siphon from BvS will be a win for Marvel.

    ReplyDelete
  120. I almost said this. I really enjoyed the piss out of that movie.

    ReplyDelete

Coked up Pacino or Nicolas Cage?

    ReplyDelete
  125. Pacino. No contest.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Hogan is Captain America.

    Vince is Norman Osborn.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Oh god the match would have been horrible but the spectacle of Undertaker-Warrior in Ceasar's Palace would have been great and I think Vince could have printed money off Undertaker vs. Warrior with Flair/Perfect flanking him.

And it could have led to Summerslam 1993 with Undertaker/Hogan vs. Warrior/Flair/Perfect handicap match. Shoot. Let's just redo 1992 now. That was a good year for me in high school.

    ReplyDelete
  128. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryJuly 27, 2014 at 6:55 PM

That's a very good one too, I'd put it in my top 5 Cage films.

    ReplyDelete
  129. I hate to say this but it might be best to have Triple H as the guest ref in the Reigns/Orton match. It adds tension to his rivalry with Reigns and adds a dimension to the match. Plus it'll keep him away from Cena/Lesnar. Overbook the thing, already.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Agreed. They need to overbook to hide Reigns shortcomings.

    ReplyDelete
  139. That's so sad.

    ReplyDelete
  140. The fact that Pacino has to be coked up to be a match for Cage gives you your answer.

IIRC, Cap 3 is his last movie on the contract, so I think he'll still be in. But yeah, he's done as it's up. Sebastian Stan has a nine-movie deal if memory serves me right, so I would think he's the front-runner to get in the suit.

  165. It was Guerrilla Warefare and the match had tacks and all this other shit in it. Who knows?

  166. Probably looks 95 now.

  167. What happened to Allen Craig?

    He is awful now

  168. If she's over, give it to her.

  169. I think Bret stays in the I-C area with Shawn, Luger, Razor, Bulldog and a few others that give us good matches.

Bret would never get close to heel Warrior. He would just be dispatching of guys like Crush and bigger opponents to lead up the Hogan/Undertaker type showdowns. Probably have a rematch with Savage too.

  170. FUCK I why did they do that move to her on the floor....iv been just waiting show after show for her to get hurt

  171. Who knew 7, 8 years ago Robert Downey Jr would become the highest paid actor in the world and the wet dream of the chicks I know from college.

  179. I wish WWE followed that philosophy.

  180. Re: Summer Slam 1992, is it true that on the original broadcast, some of the matches aired in a different order than they came out on the CHV VHS? I can't recall if there are any notable differences between the CHV version and the DVD either.

  181. I wish TEW was simpler like EWR, but still had the event booking details. I like how easy it is to sign/fire guys in EWR. I understand the realism part of TEW contract negotiations and all that, but it was so much quicker in EWR. But I love TEW's ability to have segments based on time as opposed to a fixed number and the match details.

  182. I will say that you know more about current non WWE promotions than anyone on here.

  183. Jake, your DDT is too good, stop using.

  184. I've always heard that. The Papa Shango-Tito Santana and Berzerker-Tatanka matches were excluded from the PPV broadcast IIRC.
