It's been done to death, I know, but really, when discussing July classic matches, how can this not be on the list?

RUSEV CRASH!
ReplyDelete(too soon?)
All of this definitely makes Battleground more interesting. If Swagger wins, Rusev might be dead in the water and it might signal that the company is moving away from it all. On the other hand, this company, which craves any type of mainstream attention, might go the other route and push Rusev harder. I'd actually like to see them go with option #2 just to see how it would play out, honestly.
ReplyDeleteTJ to a TJ: Lana is currently being featured in WWE.com's Diva's Day Off.
ReplyDeleteEven though the rollup finish was sort of lame, it did lay the groundwork for Austin-Owen at SummerSlam. This is a sad match to watch in retrospect as 3/5ths of the Hart team is dead and Helen/Stu are dead too. It's the last big Hart moment in the WWF.
ReplyDeletenever knew jabronies could be so cocky
ReplyDeleteBarry Horowitz had a weird charisma about him. Even as a mark, there was something that stood out about him to me more than other enhancement talent guys on the roster. I remember in early 1995 when he pushed Jeff Jarrett to the limit in an IC title match and then Bob Backlund chicken winged him out of a rematch so that Backlund could face Jarrett instead. I also remember watching the Action Zone episode where he beat Skip. That was great stuff.
ReplyDeleteThat story had me laughing. I'm not a fan of ribs that destroy guys clothes or property, but this one was funny. Owen definitely had some balls pulling a rib on someone that looked like Ahmed. I would NEVER even try that.
ReplyDeleteThat Stan Lane rib was hilarious.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I glossed over that part for the line that TERRY TAYLOR was supposed to be the Red Knight.
ReplyDeleteThat's what she said.
ReplyDeleteNo, you got it wrong. Rusev is supposed to take out John Cena.
ReplyDeleteWorst-case scenario : they have to turn him back into a Bulgarian.
ReplyDeleteAre you a Ranger Ross super fan?
ReplyDeleteAt that point anyone watching knew what they were watching. He may have been the biggest babyface on the show.
ReplyDeleteBarry even got his own Survivor Series team. I always hated how the WWF turned that hot opener in 1995 into a vehicle for the newly turned 1-2-3 Kid, who wasn't even originally booked to be part of the match. Still, that match is one of the best matches in 1995 WWF.
ReplyDeleteWhat the hell man? Just thought it would break up the monotony. He's clearly insane and doesn't mind going into detail. Would be a change from all the shit stories we've had lately.
ReplyDeleteI think it's funny that in the "New Generation" WWF one of the only over storylines was about an old timer jobber getting a win over a young guy.
ReplyDeleteBetter than having ten dudes in a match and perpetually using it to put over John Cena and Randy Orton.
ReplyDeletejim powers!
ReplyDelete80s guys/tag teams.
only problem is, he was a face in this match. Therefore, one of the heroes.
ReplyDeleteDid Lana ever mention a current event though? Besides the general consensus they Putin is an evil bastard?
ReplyDeleteJust messing around.
ReplyDeleteAn all lunatic shoot poll is this weeks theme!
Something from one of the women. Preferably one long retired.
ReplyDeleteOnly if they cancel all pro american gimmicks after every time we murder innocent people with a drone strike.
ReplyDeleteVal Venis should have been in the Hard Foundation.
ReplyDelete*slow clap*
ReplyDeleteThe smile after the low blow on Bret is a great example.
ReplyDeleteObviously the impact and personal connection to the angle and match were much more profound for those of us living in Bret's neck of the woods at the time. I've never pretended that my ratings on the match weren't grossly biased by personal feelings at the time.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great atmosphere.
ReplyDeleteThese Harts were my boys, I loved them all.
I like the finish too.
an explanation for the Roll-up ending - Austin was officially the next big thing by that point, so had to be kept strong. BUT, he needed comeuppance for his actions, hence why he had to take the fall instead of some lesser name.
ReplyDeleteTime hasn't been kind to most of Lawler's stuff, but that was definitely among his gems.
ReplyDeleteI love it when they start shitting on him while he's on the APRON, and he just keeps turning around and jawing with them. One of the only times I've seen someone dominate the match even while not in the ring.
ReplyDeleteehhhh.... having Hawk or Goldust take the fall would be kind of a deflating ending, given how heated he feud was. The way they did it, Austin takes a fall in front of a hostile crowd and gets his comeuppance, but also gets screwed a bit, so American fans can feel that he was screwed. Austin was also WAY too hot an act to be beaten cleanly (when they REALLY get behind somebody, they protect the shit out of him)- shit, he was so protective against doing jobs that he lifted his arm and pinned a guy while he had A BROKEN FREAKIN' NECK.
ReplyDeleteBruce is such a fucking cornball. He always did shit like that too in the Survivor Series 93 match, Bret/Owen 94 matches, etc. Jumping the railing like 8 times, flailing his body everywhere. God...
ReplyDeleteLet's not forget Hawk has passed as well. That's 2/5ths of the entire match gone.
ReplyDelete.....maybe.
ReplyDeleteThen again, I've never had any real problem with WWE pushing the envelope. To this day I think Muhammad Hassan should've had a powerbomb variation as a finisher, called the Dirty Bomb.
Hey, give em both credit for managing to go home at all.
ReplyDeleteThis is one of the only wrestling DVDs I own and you do it justice. Good job.
ReplyDeleteHave watched all the WWF PPVS in order since I got the network. Halfway through KOTR 97, just waiting to get to this show. Haven't seen it in ages but figure it's as awesome as I remember.
ReplyDeleteI disagree, but just because I don't think they are overrated.
ReplyDeleteRaws venue switching back and forth between the USA and Canada in July was brilliant.
ReplyDeleteyes and no. both the Hart Foundation and Austin (and his gang) weren't the usual "clean cut" faces (I mean, one of the guys on the "face" side was "Loose Cannon" Pillman?!).
ReplyDeletedo you mean on screen? because I think they should at least try to maintain a certain "kayfabe". instead they could easily drop the Putin stuff WITHOUT specifically telling about it on screen.
ReplyDeleteAt SummerSlam? Absolutely. That could have been disastrous and somehow they managed to do something
