What story, that Sting can take a beating without getting hardly any offense in whatsoever. Teach me how to take a few bumps and I'll wrestle that exact same match at a fraction of the cost.
Every squash match in history, "tells a story", does that them great too?
That wasn't the story. The story is that Sting gave Vader EVERYTHING he had, and it wasn't enough. Vader was just too dominant and as soon as Sting had things going his way, he got a bit careless, made a mistake, and that was all Vader needed to seal the deal. When Sting misses the splash, your heart sinks because even though you didn't want it to be over... you knew the end was near.
I think from WWE's point of view, the reasons they signed KENTA make perfect sense. I'll be honest: I don't watch much Japanese wrestling (too much to do, too little time), so I don't know a lot about KENTA, but this probably means he'll be pushed pretty decently at least for a while.
That smoking mastadon mask was some scary shit to a 7 year old PATRICKisLEGEND... the music didn't help matters either. Just the perfect character all the way around... especially for WCW.
Daniel Bryan, Bad News Barrett, Cesaro, Bray Wyatt, & Dean Ambrose.
#1 is definitely DB, the rest are interchangeable. So with two of my top 5 out, I'm not really watching. I didn't know it at the time, but I really was only watching for Daniel Bryan.
Total bullshit. Once Larry turned on Bruno the light went on. He was awesome in that feud, he was awesome feuding with Bockwinkel in the AWA, he was awesome as champion of a decaying promotion, he was awesome with the Enforcers, and he was awesome with the Dangerous Alliance.
Fun fact: I got a video for christmas during my youth entitled "car wars 4" (stunning smashes and crashes!) and the trailer bit at the beginning where they advertised other videos in the range used the same music that Sting came out to during this period.
Nothing tops him beating the hell out of Kaientei as they're making their entrance against Taker and Big Show. He looks at both of them, and with a straight face tells Taker and Big Show, "I just saved your asses."
Glorious.
Oh, and speaking of Taker, I always loved when Rock would poke fun at him in 1999 for "having Mickey Mouse tattoos and a thirty-three pound head."
It's just part of the overall story of the rivalry. This is chapter one, Sting tries to figure out Vader and gets owned. The later matches (chapters) complete the story. Like Starrcade 1992, sting has Vader figured out sort of, but still gets owned. He then gets a lucky break and wins. Then at Super Brawl 3, Vader wants revenge from his loss in his style of match the White Castle of Fear strap match. Then after that they just had a ton of other great matches, with examples like Slamboree 1994 and Fall Brawl 1994, plus Beach Blast 1993.
The useage of the APA in 2000. Especially when Jericho and Taka hired them to protect ringside during their title matches. It was a really awesome touch.
wow what a way to put over a heel.. that had impact... and as well jim ross was excellent in solo announcing.. the silence helped bring the action breathe.. how does everyone feel about only having one playbyplay announcer
I know but that match is probably ripped from a DVD. They tended to edit him out a lot on releases. They either ponied up the $ for the network, or it's a loophole.
I mostly agree, except for when Crash and Hardcore were fighting The Brood and brought the scale out. Hardcore saying to Gangrel, "How bout you, Dracula? Why don't you get your fat ass up here?" is one of the funniest things ever said on a wwe program.
Why the heck would Memphis do a deal like that? The Grizzlies must be thinking that were it not for their injury-plagued first half of the season, they would've been conference finalists again. Memphis sees itself as a darkhorse Finals contender, not a team looking to rebuild.
At that point, WWE was smart enough to save Cena for the 'smiley' stuff and let Batista just be himself. Heck, even three years ago you had Orton as a darker-edged face carrying the Smackdown brand.
I have no idea why they can't do that now --- let Cena be Cena and let Roman or whoever be a cool anti-hero type.
The Saturday weather at the Open is supposed to be pretty brutal, plus Liverpool seems like the rare major course where guys can definitely shoot low numbers. Rory's in great shape thus far but things could definitely still turn over the weekend.
Regal was definitely slated as the biggest heel on RAW at that point, and with CM Punk as the new world champ, we likely would've had Regal/Punk for the belt at Summerslam 2008 rather than Punk/JBL. Dammit.
Regal slumped in that throne in mid-ring, looking at the crowd with total disdain...what a great heel Someone described it once as 'Richard III as a wrestling character' and it was terrific.
The actual match between Angle and Lesnar at WM19. Everyone remembers the botched finish, but nobody seems to remember the awesome bout that preceded it. That was an easy top-five main event in Wrestlemania history, and would be remembered as an all-timer had Lesnar actually stuck the SSP.
I'm not sure if they're available on the Network, but no one ever really talks about the old UK Only PPVs, which were particularly prominent during the Attitude era.
They were a pretty mixed bag overall, but as self contained shows with unique setups, storylines, match cards and at times cringey attempts to tap into British pop culture, there's something quite endearing about them.
Like I said they were a mixed bag, with cards ranging from woeful (Tiger Ali Singh v Gillberg / No Mercy 99) to strange (Lesnar AND Heyman v Edge / Rebellion 02) to pretty good (Austin v Angle v Rock v Rikishi / Rebellion 00).
Ricky steamboats performances in 2009...the man was 56 years old, skinning the cat, doing pescado and had 2 matches a 56 year old man shouldn't be having. How we never got a michaels steamboat match jus for the hell of if ill never know..
What story, that Sting can take a beating without getting hardly any offense in whatsoever. Teach me how to take a few bumps and I'll wrestle that exact same match at a fraction of the cost.
ReplyDeleteEvery squash match in history, "tells a story", does that them great too?
Someone has never seen Rocky 3.
ReplyDeleteBut he used Vader's real name! He must know what he's talking about.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I actually have a lot of faith in Triple H and Stephanie. Maybe I'll be proven to wrong, but I like a lot of what they've done.
ReplyDeleteThe big question for me, though, is when Hunter is in charge, can we start calling them belts again?
That wasn't the story. The story is that Sting gave Vader EVERYTHING he had, and it wasn't enough. If I didn't post here, I'd have zero idea who Tanahashi was... and I still couldn't pick him out of a lineup. However, I am very familiar with KENTA.
ReplyDeleteThis guy's clueless. Don't even feed into him.
ReplyDeleteTotal bullshit. Once Larry turned on Bruno the light went on. He was awesome in that feud, he was awesome feuding with Bockwinkel in the AWA, he was awesome as champion of a decaying promotion, he was awesome with the Enforcers, and he was awesome with the Dangerous Alliance.
ReplyDeleteThat spot is taken by the token Bulgarian.
ReplyDeleteYou must work for a denture company.
ReplyDeleteUntil they get bored with him in 3 months, like everybody else.
ReplyDeleteNot defending this by any means, but it's entirely possible this suggestion was made without realizing the racial connotations.
ReplyDeleteSingapore Slanteye
ReplyDeleteI think they'll go full bore with him... if only to erase the stink Triple H has with signing other talents (Sin Cara, Karma, etc).
ReplyDeleteYou're missing the point. To the fans, this was the effect.
ReplyDeleteI just find pre Hulkamania WWF and 80% of the AWA insufferably boring.
ReplyDeleteOr even when they didn't need to be! *Cough* Starrcade 97 *Cough*
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing the word "wrestling" will be allowed to be said at least a little more often.
ReplyDeleteFun fact: I got a video for christmas during my youth entitled "car wars 4" (stunning smashes and crashes!) and the trailer bit at the beginning where they advertised other videos in the range used the same music that Sting came out to during this period.

Meh, 1.4 ..... 1.2..... 1.0. It all sucks.
ReplyDeleteIf you can, go for Primus. They run on the Bell system but no bandwidth restrictions.
ReplyDeleteOnly problem is that Primus' availability is limited.
They ever hit a 2, I'll suck Dixie's big dong.
ReplyDeleteSting vs. Vader is one of the greatest rivalries in the history of our sport!
ReplyDeletecooky, even
ReplyDeleteYeah because of Triple H.
ReplyDeleteWhat's your point?
ReplyDeleteThis is my second favorite July match, following the first ever War Games match.
ReplyDeleteI used to sing "Kill the Wabbit, kill the wabbit" to that song.
ReplyDeleteNow I sing, "Daniel BRY-an, Daniel BRY-an".
"Big Shot" Bob Holly.
ReplyDeleteNothing tops him beating the hell out of Kaientei as they're making their entrance against Taker and Big Show. He looks at both of them, and with a straight face tells Taker and Big Show, "I just saved your asses."

ReplyDeleteTotally agree on Austin's commentary during Foley/Funk. He did a fantastic job.
ReplyDeleteBam Bam Bigelow as a face in 1987 WWF and 1988 NWA was always weird to me, as I grew up on his later WWF and ECW heel runs.
ReplyDeletePretty rare appearance for a powerbomb into the turnbuckle in that match; probably the only time I've seen that spot in WWE.
ReplyDeleteThe useage of the APA in 2000. Especially when Jericho and Taka hired them to protect ringside during their title matches. It was a really awesome touch.
ReplyDeleteThat look was fantastic
ReplyDeleteJust said this today. Angle vs Austin at Summerslam 01 is great. Angle gets 10 percent of the offense but it ain't no squash.
ReplyDeleteAnd if you were in charge you wouldn't want people you trust hanging around you?
ReplyDeletewow what a way to put over a heel.. that had impact... and as well jim ross was excellent in solo announcing.. the silence helped bring the action breathe.. how does everyone feel about only having one playbyplay announcer
ReplyDeleteJesse's commentary is edited out.
ReplyDeletewow.. thats is amazing .. i dunno if i'd wanna hear jesse's commentary even though i am a big fan . thanks for the info!
ReplyDeleteJesse is great during the match, as always. WWE edits his commentary out when they can to avoid paying him.
ReplyDeleteits on the network
ReplyDeleteI know but that match is probably ripped from a DVD. They tended to edit him out a lot on releases. They either ponied up the $ for the network, or it's a loophole.
ReplyDeleteHe says he was selling the leg, but I still think he had a torn ligament those last 15 minutes.
ReplyDeleteI mostly agree, except for when Crash and Hardcore were fighting The Brood and brought the scale out. Hardcore saying to Gangrel, "How bout you, Dracula? Why don't you get your fat ass up here?" is one of the funniest things ever said on a wwe program.
ReplyDeleteThe Giant's brief smoking phase!
ReplyDeleteGoddamn Pat was a trooper. That match took years off his career.
ReplyDeleteLos Fabulosos
ReplyDeleteWhy the heck would Memphis do a deal like that? The Grizzlies must be thinking that were it not for their injury-plagued first half of the season, they would've been conference finalists again. Memphis sees itself as a darkhorse Finals contender, not a team looking to rebuild.

ReplyDeleteI loved the 24/7 rule, and though it'd be difficult to bring back in the PG era, I do wish it'd come back some capacity.
ReplyDeleteWhere else could you see Al Snow defend himself by using urinal cakes?
Yes! Flair was hilarious in this.
ReplyDeleteRegal was definitely slated as the biggest heel on RAW at that point, and with CM Punk as the new world champ, we likely would've had Regal/Punk for the belt at Summerslam 2008 rather than Punk/JBL. Dammit.

ReplyDeleteThe 2000 Nitro when El Dandy asked Torrie Wilson if he could "excite her groin." I think they later danced in the ring.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if they're available on the Network, but no one ever really talks about the old UK Only PPVs, which were particularly prominent during the Attitude era.

ReplyDeleteShe could still get it.
ReplyDeleteHell, there would probably be trash thrown if you couple that with Taker losing.
ReplyDeleteBe prepared to see an exodus of crew guys quit. I don't think anyone can blame them, that's total bullshit.
ReplyDeleteThat's likely because KENTA has done pretty extensive work in the US.
ReplyDeleteIf Japan was the target, then Tanahashi is a much, much bigger deal to THEM
At the very least I think he'll get a big time NXT Championship reign to cooincide with the network launching in Japan.
ReplyDelete
