Let's talk about.....the fall of Roman Reigns

Let’s talk about….the fall of Roman Reigns

As he stood under the lights on Monday night, Roman Reigns passed his first test with flying (well, decent) colors. The newly anointed savior of our sport stood alone and cut his first main event promo, looking and sounding like he belonged in front of us. The fans ate it up like a whale at a buffet featuring all-you-can-eat Jonahs.

So where did this sinking feeling come from?

Let’s establish up front that the push of Roman Reigns has proceeded rather flawlessly; indeed, the Shield has been handled as well as any talents we’ve seen in the last ten years at this point. Slowly building Reigns up, with few jobs and strong victories, his ascension to the top of the card is nearly complete. We’re several months away from his final coronation, but barring any injury or unforeseen circumstances, he will be holding the title aloft at the end of Wrestlemania 31.

Speaking of unforeseen circumstances….

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it" – George Santayana

Time for a stroll down the memory lane, don’t you think?

In the past 5 years, we’ve seen the ascension of 2 unlikely stars to the top of the ranks in WWE; CM Punk and Daniel Bryan. And we’ve seen the rejection of all of the following stars that WWE has tried to get over into that spot – Alberto Del Rio, Ryback, the returning Batista, and old card mainstays such as Cena, Orton, and the Big Show. In each instance, the fan base has rejected these options in favor of the fan-grown wrestler that the audience connected with. The booking of Roman Reigns does not fill me with confidence that this trend will be avoided in the near future.

The fact is, I think that we’re seeing a new breed of fan that has grown and matured over the last 5 years or so, and that fan is the informed fan. Not the smark, like us, who analyze wrestling to a ridiculous degree, but the fan who knows more about what is going on due to the internet or whatever medium they use than ever before. I believe that the fanbase has conditioned itself to reject many of the creations that WWE gives ‘superhero’ pushes to; initially, those wrestlers are welcomed as someone new to the main event scene.

As time goes on, however, there is a real role that the fans have taken on in determining who they want to receive a push, and not allowing that push to happen organically is playing with fire. If Reigns is indeed the long game for ‘Mania this year, the concern that I foresee is the fans getting tired or restless with his domination to the point that they will reject him the same way they eventually rejected a wrestler such as Ryback.

“Ryback? Reigns is twice the wrestler Ryback is!” Hmmmm….is that really true? Reigns has been extremely protected up to this point with regard to his weaknesses in the ring, which are very real. He fits in well as the heavy finisher in tag matches, but can he carry a match on his back when he needs to? I don’t put him in Scott Steiner territory by any stretch of the imagination, but any wrestling fan can see that he has a severely limited moveset to put it mildly. Spear, Superman Punch, dropkick to the ring apron. The rest of what Reigns does in the ring is very basic kicky-punchy clothesline type wrestling, and that type of wrestling has been a big part of what the fans have rejected in guys such as Cena and Ryback.

Remember the Ryback push? He was given a pretty big shove out there, pinning multiple wrestlers at once with big power moves to get him over as a monster. Much like Reigns has been protected in tag matches, Ryback was protected with short squashes. He was given title matches with Punk, main events with Cena, both of whom are excellent workers, and the matches came up relatively short. He was given a simple catchphrase to get over, which he did.  I think that the similarities are more evident than people think. The only difference is that, when the time comes, I think he’ll go over for the belt, whereas Ryback did not.

And that could be a problem. Because the fan’s role in deciding whether or not he finishes his push at the top when the proverbial rocket gets him all the way there is going to be determined by the epic nature of his matches. And I’m not at all convinced he’s ready for that; while we make fun sometimes of fans who may not know what’s really going on, ringwork has always gotten people over. Just look at the Steiner/HHH debacle vs the Angle/Benoit classic on the same show; wrestling fans will buy into good wrestling . Will he be ready by Wrestlemania? Of course, he could be.

But what happens if they can’t sustain his act that long? People tired of Cena’s superman act years ago, and have been vocal about that to the point where it needed acknowledgement on television, something that never would have happened to a top babyface from another era. Of course, Cena is a special case, as his merchandise sales and public image for the company require that he be kept a BINO (babyface in name only), but the boos far outweigh the cheers. I don’t know that Roman has that type of skill set yet – the ability to do the intangible things that are needed to sustain that type of run at the top.

Contrast that with the man getting the second biggest pops on the show right now – Dean Ambrose.

Ambrose is currently most smarks’ pick for the breakout star of the Shield waiting to happen, and it’s all in how he carries himself in the storytelling of his matches and his angles. He comes out and the crowd has NO idea what is going to happen next. He wrestles like no one else on the card at this time, sells like a motherfucker, and in general is a complete professional wrestler.

But the reason that I see Ambrose as the bigger star down the road is that he doesn’t feel like a WWE creation – he feels like a real (crazy) person, who has no real equal in the Fed when it comes to both his character and his unique ringwork. The fact is that if the fans are going to choose the next main event star, I suspect that they will tire of Reigns faster than they tire of Ambrose.

And that’s a real problem, because the WWE is going to forget the history of even the last few years again.

The rise of CM Punk came because his character was unique and people were dying to see something that didn’t look like John Cena up top. The fans rejected Batista because they didn’t want to see the same thing, they wanted Daniel Bryan, who wrestled a unique and different style than anyone else at the time, and who had a character that appealed to the masses as a true underdog babyface, something that hadn’t been done in a long time. The fact is, Roman Reigns is exactly what the WWE sees when they look for a main event talent.

And the fact is, the fans have rejected that notion multiple times over the last several years.

Please understand, I’m not rooting against Roman Reigns in the slightest. I hope he pulls it together and proves me completely wrong. He not only has the look, he has the same type of attitude that put Batista over the top back in the day, the 'cooler than you vibe'. It might carry him all the way.

Or that rocket could explode before it clears the stratosphere.

And that fall can kill you.

  1. Reigns has a great head of hair. He will be fine.

  2. Reigns has Bret Hart hair: long, black, and wet at all times.

Bret was all Jheri Curl though.

  3. This legitimately made me laugh out loud. Well done, Satan.

  4. This is the stereotypical type IWC bullshit I expect to find on 411.

    ReplyDelete
  5. There is definitely a legit case to be made worrying about them turning him into Samoan Cena, but this missed that mark by a mile.

  6. For some reason, I will always remember how the PWIs of the mid-90s would ALWAYS make mention of Bundy's Indie appearances. He was like THE guy for that- he must have been the biggest name available at the time, and probably commanded the most money. A top-level Indie guy can actually make more than a WWF guy sometimes, especially if he's a midcarder there.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I guess that explains why Bundy didn't want to do jobs.

Right. It basically came down to "he has muscles and we hate wrestlers with muscles!" Jesus, two years of a pretty much perfect push and an actual organic enthusiastic fan response, but no--- he's gonna get rejected like Batista! Fucking ridiculous.

  9. The Ryback comp is hilarious.

  10. Quality control has not been great around here lately. The people with posting abilities should really be limited and long winded IWC rants like this and fantasy booking columns should never see the light of the blog.

  11. I'm looking forward to the fresh "Who is your Mt. Rushmore of wrestling?" QOTD later today.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I really hate this "If he doesn't do snap suplexes and 450 splashes he's not a good wrestler" crap. Ring of Honor has a lot to answer for.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Pay no attention to those crowds popping like crazy for Reigns.

    ReplyDelete
  14. If Roman Reigns wore kick pads and slapped his thigh a lot it'd be a different story though.

    ReplyDelete
  15. If you're going to write an article bashing Reigns, how do you not point out his cheesy white lines in his gear? It's so awful and cheap looking.

  16. I'm stretching my fingers in anticipation for laying out some of my least favorite heel turns!!

  20. Was Montreal all just a big work? No really... Think about it!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yep, for as much as McMahon might have a "Big man fetish", most of the IWC clearly has a "Small man fetish". Seemingly anyone over 6'4 and 250 lbs automatically sucks.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Look, we all know WWE could make everything better just by making Cena turn heel and making the product not PG anymore!

    ReplyDelete
  23. The WWE has really booked themselves into a corner with the signing if KENTA. As soon as he debuts the fans will completely reject Reigns and be rabid for KENTA's unique new to the WWE fan base work rate. It will probably leave Bryan DOA upon his return and make pretty much the entire roster look second rate.

Only thing that will be able to save then is if they split Rowan and Garoer from Bray. Then have Bo Dallas align with his real life brother Bray Wyatt and then have them feud with Rowan and Harper over the tag straps. It would really help revitalize the tag division and that's really what the fans have been clamoring for.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Those people don't know what they really want! He's 5,000 words explaining exactly why they won't be cheering what they are cheering for much longer. The modern fan has been raised on CM punk and Daniel Bryan. They just haven't realized how much they hate this muscle headed bozo yet. They want small guys the can relate to! Underdog stories!

    ReplyDelete
  25. You forgot the part about creating a stable of wrestlers with legit amateur backgrounds and making them feud with a stable of work rate indy guys over whose style is superior and more pure and....

Jesus, I can't even finish this. I made myself angry.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Pretty much everything that was said in this post has been said to death in the comments for the last week in one way or another. I'm really not seeing the reason for it other than, "Hey, I see everyone talking about this in the comments, so here's my opinion as though it's original and more important."

    ReplyDelete
  27. Sorry, I only respond the next day and in a format that people can't respond to. Because I can't lower myself to engage in the conversation in the comments section. It would ruin the purity of my favorite finisher list.

    ReplyDelete
  28. The fans would just be marking out the entire time. You don't need heels in that feud. Just give the fans the brand of wrestling they want. No better yet, the brand if wrestling they DESERVE!

    ReplyDelete
  29. The WWE Network subscriptions would TRIPLE! NO, QUINTUPLE!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Because he was too fat to drive from arena to arena ?

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm sorry, but $20 shipping to the US for 1 figure is a complete ripoff...that's eBay price gouging at its finest...

    ReplyDelete
  32. The secret to fixing the network is so simple it boggles my mind they won't just do it already. Buy a bunch of old NJPW footage. Dub in English announcing. License to print money. So simple!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Was gonna comment, but this is a little too circle jerky for me. If you want to jizz with other guys over being a fan of 3rd most talented member of a 3 man trio soley because he's getting a push, who am I to rain on your parade? Please continue.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Uh.....wuuuuuut?

  35. I got through like 3 paragraphs and then the self congratulations just got to be too much. I can only assume that since Scott is contributing to other sites for actual pay now, he's really lowered the standards so as to at least get content here.

  36. You can really tell when they were trying to save as much money as possible -- every fucking show is in the northeast. Live from Utica, taped from Utica, taped from Utica, Live from Hershey, Taped from Hershey, Live from Hartford, taped from Hartford, Live from Rochester, taped from Rochester, etc...

    ReplyDelete
  37. Scott should take a page from TNA introduce the new writers in a gut check style and let the commenters decide if they continue to write or not. Then we can just shit on everything and he can put up the writers again under a new pseudonym a few days later. It keeps everyone involved and actually makes it seem like there's a reason for trotting out drivel.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Is it wrong that I still have almost ALL of these ??

  39. 'Meanwhile, Randy Savage is at a parade either for or against Cooley’s Anemia. Either way, it’s very important to give them money. I think the people behind that disease need better PR because I’ve never heard of it.'

Maybe they cured it, thanks to Savage and the contributions of PEOPLE LIKE YOU!

  40. I'm pretty sure the members of The Shield are related to The Big Boss Man. They dress just like 1998-2000 Boss Man.

Reigns needs a nightstick. That would get him over with the IWC. He also needs a Canadian foil, perhaps when Daniel Bryan returns, he can dress like The Mountie use to. Oh, and Bryan will bring back the cattle prod with sweet sound effects. Bryan vs. Reigns in a Jail House Match at SummerSlam 2015 is money.

Reigns needs to embrace his Boss Man-ness. Have Reigns crash Big Show's mom's funeral. The IWC would love that.

    ReplyDelete
  41. WOW, just reading the observer and the 'top guys' royalty checks for video games was cut from 70k from last years first quarter to $1,555 this quarter! Massive pay cut, especially since even the one from last quarter was for 11k apparently. Plus they still haven't got their wrestlemania checks.

  42. I like Roman Reigns. So there.

  45. I'd wait until WWE 2K15 is out to do a fair comparison. This round was probably the "residuals" from 2K14's last few sales.

    ReplyDelete
  48. If there's anything we've been taught over the last two decades, everything could use more Kane.

    ReplyDelete
  49. You say he is the least talented member of the Shield like it is a bad thing.

    ReplyDelete
  50. And Reigns isn't even that big....they just make him act big.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Sure but even the last quarter payout was 11k

    ReplyDelete
  52. I'll just touch on your "rejected" stars point:

ADR: People have fun calling him the "Mexican (famous wrestler)", most of his time in the WWE has been mostly in the vein of Randy Orton post-SummerSlam 2013: Little to no heat (for different reasons), technically sound, but the fan interest just isn't there to back up the push. Or, as Fat Tony once could have said, "They don't put asses in seats".

Ryback: Great build, shoehorned into a feud he had no business winning. And then failed to win feuds he SHOULD have. But honestly, he just didn't have a chance at the top of the card, when he was there. Is he "ruined"? As someone who could carry the World title, probably. As someone who can be a credible IC/US champ, not yet. But there's work to do there.

Batista: I don't think I could pick a WORSE time for him to return, nor a worse "return promo", if I had six hours. He comes back at one of Bryan-a-Mania's peaks, shortly after the Wyatt fakeout (which I still have NO reason to believe wasn't "oh shit we need to fix this" panic booking), as a supposed face, but one hugging HHH and Steph, the real heels in the main storyline. I'm reminded of an old Punk story, where a writer told him "I tell Batista what to say, and how to say it". Well, looks like whoever was doing his talking and acting this time was confused, and it hurt the big guy. A victim of circumstance, aggravated by his slow return to ring shape.

Cena, Orton, Big Show: I can lump them all together, using a famous line from one BIG man: "Ten years is a LONG time".

Show's been on top, on and off, for... 15 years now? He came in against Austin, and while he's bounced around the card, he's been closer to the top much more often than not. As for his value, I'd consider it very low, and I'll touch on that more under Orton.

Orton's nearing ten years on top, although some of that time has been on top of the "B-show". As I said about ADR below, Orton and Show definitely failed to put asses in seats last year, during their rather shitty "feud". Well, Show's feud against HHH/Steph, at least. Bad writing? Sure, but I would argue that even good writing had little chance of getting the fan interest behind this stale match-up. And as for "stale"...

Cena's first title win was over nine years ago (oh shit, will they do a "decade" thing at WM 31?), and while he at least does bring money in (top merch guy, remember?), I do wonder how well others would do if they had the level of support/new merch that Cena gets. Come on, you could build a full shirt wardrobe off Cena's stuff... one that would look like shit, granted, but that's a LOT of shirts and other things. But then there's his character. LOLCENAWINS, making fun of his opponents in between serious promos, he does what the Rock used to do... except the Rock didn't do it for NINE YEARS STRAIGHT in a top spot. Oh, and the Rock also lost quite a bit.

I'll cut it here, and possibly/probably respond to any good counters/points made on anything I've said.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Some great wrestlers there, sadly I have all but Bob Orton, and the shipping is way too much. The one thing I always hated about Ebay is the shipping. Once bought a PS2 game on there and the shipping was more then buying the game brand new. Hope you make some money though, I know how hard it is not having a paycheck for a long time. Best of luck.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Again, a game's sales do dwindle as time passes... especially once the next game is announced. As WWE 2K15 has been.

That's honestly a non-story. Now, if the first checks off 2K15 are small (compared to sales, not just check to check), then there's smoke and fire.

  57. I totally agree with your Cena merchandise points. Give Ambrose or Reigns a their own tony towel merch and they will move comparable numbers. Punk moved plenty if merch.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Not soon enough.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I bet Roman Reigns is super appreciative about how much you care for his future.

  64. Funny thing, even back in the era where Raw didn't give away many big matches, I STILL thought he was announcing a RAW main event there. I was shocked when it was actually a PPV main event.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I actually think this is a fine piece with legitimate concerns, though I think Roman Reigns will be fine. The concerns in the article reminds me of 1990 when the Ultimate Warrior crashed and burned as champion. (That's my take, anyway.) They did everything right from 1987 to 1990, but once he was champ they could no longer protect him in the same way (though I daresay he did move on to a rather good Wrestlemania 7.) Reigns is still learning though, and I think he'll be a good contributor to the main event scene.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Meanwhile, Randy Savage is at a parade either for or against Cooley’s Anemia. Either way, it’s very important to give them money. I think the people behind that disease need better PR because I’ve never heard of it.

Maybe Savage helped to wipe it out.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I guess I'm a bad fan because I like all 3 (former) members of The Shield. Crazy, right? I mean, I can't believe I'm actually able to enjoy 3 guys who are all being pushed well.

This shit is like Highlander. There can only be one!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Forklifts aren't built for long-distance travel.

    ReplyDelete
  72. This is a pretty stupid article. The fans already accepted Reigns at the Royal Rumble.

Also, Reigns has been a shit ton of awesome matches with the Shield. And you're comparing him to Ryback? Get the fuck outta here.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Just not a good main event, was it? And it was a bad finish even by Raw standards.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Yeah, I know they wanted to protect Diesel's injury by doing a tag match, but that was the best idea they could come up with? One of the rumors floating around at the time was that it was going to be Diesel/Razor v Sid/Spivey which at least would have been pretty cool.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Ryback comparisons are like Hitler comparisons. Once you bring it up you lose the argument.

    ReplyDelete
  76. They should have at least had Sid win since it was a tag match with no real stakes on the line and would have added heat to their IYH 2 match, but Diesel beating Sid on three consecutive PPV's isn't how you build a main even program.

    ReplyDelete
  77. haha yep. But instead, they have Sid WALK AWAY FROM THE MATCH because he had zero confidence that he could beat Diesel... BUT HEY, SPEND MONEY ON THE DIESEL/SID TITLE MATCH NEXT MONTH!!!

    ReplyDelete
  78. I was going to type that they could at least have had Sid squash Bam Bam if they didn't want Diesel looking weak, but then I thought about the rest of that godawful ppv. Undertaker loses, Shawn loses, Mabel is king AND the babyfaces lose the main event? That's a hell of a downer. Think the faces probably had to go over.

Or just not make Mabel king. Either way.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Yeah that was some really weird booking. They got a monster like Sid and they book him like Honky Tonk Man.

    ReplyDelete
  80. To your second: "with the Shield" being the key point there. Can he succeed on his own? Abso-fucking-lutely. Can he fail on his own? Again, abso-fucking-lutely. And right now, I wouldn't lay one cent either way.

Because, as bad as this might sound, his success or failure is largely out of his hands right now. Not through anything he's done or refused to do, just through future fan sentiment and possible returns/debuts. As I mentioned below, Batista's return was hijacked well out of his control. The same could happen to Reigns, or the opposite, where his path is much smoother.

(I hate to put it this way, but the news about Bryan can only help Reigns. That's one LARGE heat source out of the picture at the moment, one that desperately needs someone(s) filling in for it.)

    ReplyDelete
  81. Thing is, Mabel was over as a face the previous year, and he did have some cool moves for a big guy. So I understand the idea of pushing him as a main eventer... It just didn't work AT ALL.

    ReplyDelete
  82. So you've just conceded defeat twice in 15 words? Damn, not even the French are THAT willing to wave the white flag.

    :)

    ReplyDelete
  83. The one and only cool part of that match was Diesel making the hot tag, then immediately hurting his elbow, and having to tag Bam Bam right back, then the heel Tatanka won the following exchange as he was fresh. That was very rare for tag matches.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I thought Mabel did a good job during his big heel push. Not enough to justify the push of course, but he was motivated around this time, and I would have been okay if they had Mabel just gone after the tag titles with Mo instead of the world title.

    ReplyDelete
  85. He hasn't gone that far down yet, he hasn't posted anything from you.

    ReplyDelete
  86. you've been on fucking fire lately

    ReplyDelete
  87. You should pen a column.

    ReplyDelete
  88. In kayfabe terms if they had the heels win the big matches then the annoucers would be able to say that the reason the fans were shitting all over the show was because they just saw their heroes lose.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Without critiquing the column I will just make this simple. If Reigns does get turned on by the fans TURN HIM HEEL. This basic principle has been a staple of good wrestling booking for decades.

    ReplyDelete
  90. You may as well have lost an inferno match, because you just got BURNED.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I guess this is his thing now.

    ReplyDelete
  92. *dismissive jerk-off motion*

    ReplyDelete
  93. This is true. Like how a dead crowd would always just actually be "stunned into silence" by the sheer amazingness of what was taking place. Still tough to explain away the ECW chants though. :)

    ReplyDelete
  94. You gotta go with The Dungeon there, as Meng and Barbarian could probably take The Corporation by themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I had to google The Cabinet as I had no idea what it was. Christ, that WWE 2004/5 looks horrible. I saw absolutely nothing of it post-Mania 20 as I didn't have access to Sky Sports or a decent internet connection at that time. Never felt the need to catch up on that era either,

On the surface I get the comparisons, but the thing about Ultimate Warrior is that he kinda was a bad choice to be the long term face of teh company. His persona was of a legit crazy man from another planet who screamed and couldn't speak coherently. That's a great guy to have in the mix at the top, but you can't build around him. (Saying this as someone who was a bigtime Warrior fan as a kid.)

Roman obviously won't have those same problems. Warrior was basically unable to relate as a human being.

Man, would love to get into an argument now with Farva about how Punk was totally justified in walking out like he did.

    ReplyDelete
  98. It's a shame that the Reigns push was such a failure. Oh well, on to other things.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Ah, Jarrett vs Doink, my all-time favorite crappy match. Even the commentary was hilarious.

    ReplyDelete
  100. The fans didn't accept Reigns, they were just cheering anyone that wasn't Batista at that point. When Punk got eliminated, the crowd booed everyone in the ring and chanted for Daniel Bryan. THEN they started chanting for Reigns when Sheamus got eliminated.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Apparently they really hated him. Hall in particular. They thought he was a complete joke and didn't know how to work.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Looks like a smarter move every day, especially after reading how the "boys" have been told the mania checks are going out next week a few times now.

I'm not the biggest fan of Roman Reigns or Bray Wyatt but I definitely hope they are going to be fairly compensated for getting over and having big matches. Hopefully we won't go back to the days of 1995 where Nash claims he only made 250,000.

    ReplyDelete
  103. I do remember Nash in shoot interviews saying he had lots of respect for him, and he learned a lot from him though.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Worst_in_the_WorldJuly 10, 2014 at 8:56 AM

The lack of ANY viable other wrestling option really has these guys fucked over. There's pretty much nothing they can do short of just quitting wrestling and doing something else.

    ReplyDelete
  105. They could give Reigns catchphrases from a bunch of Justin Timberlake songs and the dude would be even more over.

    Actually, I want that now.

Also as for teh Ryback comp...
Ryback was getting pretty over until WWE jobbed him out. Not saying that Ryback was the greatest or anything, but fans were absolutely ready to lose their minds for him if he won the belt at hell in a Cell that year.

Fans didn't reject him, WWE just booked him to be a loser.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Hey, they could go to TN.... No. just no. I can't finish that sentence without laughing.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Nope, the Jheri Curl looked bad by the end of the match.

Roman's hair makes Nash weep in his bed while rubbing his now short grey hair.

    ReplyDelete
  109. I think the turning point was that this new Shield group kept screwing him over and over.... Then the Shield won all of the blowoff matches. So basically WWE made a choice.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Hmm, that's interesting. He probably is the kind of guy you like in hindsight rather than when you're actually hanging around him.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Yeah they booked him to be a loser instead of a monster so all his heat went away because he had no real talent outside of being pushed as a wwe star, kind of like the guy this article is about.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Ryback was dead in the water when the Hell in the Cell with Punk sucked and he lost via a screwjob. The Goldberg chants destroyed him too.

    ReplyDelete
  113. He said this in a shoot I saw a part of.

    ReplyDelete
  114. He had a great story about him being at a hotel, and hearing another room bumping all night long. He called the lobby and found out it was Backlund's room. He was amazed as Backlund is a happily married man.

When he questioned him about it the next day, it turns out that Bob was doing "stair exercises" using a chair the entire night.

  115. Especially in the mid-90s when business was way down. Would have made more sense to sign with WCW during the late 90s to get those big checks for nothing, but he's been able to earn a living his way for over 30 years. I don't care much for his work but I respect his hustle.

    ReplyDelete
  116. "but i RESPECT his HUSTLE"

    How about his loyalty?

    ReplyDelete
  117. This blog's turn against Roman Reigns has been amusing to watch, to say the least.

    ReplyDelete
  118. well hey, he's being shoved down our throats! (as opposed to being buried, or crippled by 50/50 booking. ) Wait, is there anything left?

The top guy payout for the same quarter last year was $70K. There's some funky accounting going on.

Well, the real turning point was when he beat down Cena, got a monster pop, and they turned him heel.... cheap heat "you're fat" heel. Not the awesome thing he has going now.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Alliterative stable names are the absolute worst.

    ReplyDelete
  123. As I recall they forced him to go and try lose weight because he was JUST TOO FAT.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Magnificent 7 at least had heritage.

How about the NWO B-Team or Misfits In Action? MIA: The Job Squad minus the originality and replaced with Hugh Morrus cutting a lot of promos about how they needed to work togeeetthhherr maaannnnnnn!

  129. Ryback's just another guy however you book him. There's nothing special about him. He's another Warlord.

    ReplyDelete
  130. In defense, it was in front of the post-RAW Mania crowd, but still, how do you have someone get a monster pop like that and then just have him be a heel. That's some WCW level shit right there.

Great point about Bundy. It really is surprising he never ended up in WCW as another fat slug to retread against Hogan in the Dungeon of Doom days

  140. The product is stale. RAW & SmackDown both look unchanged for years now. The music, graphics, announcers, and format of the shows are the same now as they were 10 years ago. Even the talent: for as many new stars as WWE have brought into the mix, you still have Cena, Orton, Kane, Big Show, Triple H, Mysterio--hell even midcarders like Mark Henry & Kofi Kingston feel like they've been there forever. And how many years of storylines have involved the RAW General Manager, SmackDown GM, the Director of Operations, the Mystery GM, the Authority, and the ever-changing face-to-heel-to-face McMahon Family?

For years I stopped watching wrestling, and every time I would hear about something that would bring me back, like say... the Nexus, or C.M. Punk winning the championship and his contract expiring... in short order such things always settled into the ever unchanging morass of WWE storytelling. Even now--right NOW--having been brought back by the ascension of Daniel Bryan, the Shield, Bray Wyatt, and Cesaro, I still struggle to stay interested. John Cena is the champion, the Authority is pulling the strings, etc. Its hard to watch all 3 hours of RAW. I don't even bother watching SmackDown. If I'm bored I might watch Main Event & Superstars. The only thing I go out of my way to watch is NXT because it's different.

So whether they push Roman Reigns or Dean Ambrose, Bray Wyatt or Cesaro, before long the fans will cool on them because they're being plugged into the same cookie cutter stories WWE has been doing for over 10 years now. And when that happens they pull the chicken switch and put Cena or Orton back on top. And the fans get restless, pick someone else new to get behind... lather, rinse, repeat.

With their budget cuts, and more upcoming... I'M AFRAID I'VE GOT SOME BADDD NEEWWSS...

    ReplyDelete
  142. This is the same reason I stopped watching Friends. I get it, Ross and Rachel will they or won't they. It's easy. It's not thought provoking. It's trite and it's been done to death.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Ryback failed because 1) he only faced jobbers before he 2) lost the first big star-making match in which he was booked. When he couldn't beat the smarmy Punk in the HIAC, no matter what kind of referee shenanigans were going on, Ryback was done. He didn't have the build that Reigns or the other Shield guys have.

Reigns will work because this has been, and hopefully will be, a slow build that the fans are not rejecting. The reason why the Shield guys work is because they come off as legitimate bad asses and they look like stars. Also, they all have a defined purpose when they are on TV. When they were heels, it was to wreak havoc among the top babyfaces due to the "injustices" that were being done. When they were faces, it was to keep the Authority in check. Now that they are separate, each guy still has a very defined purpose.

For example, Alberto Del Rio was over when he first came on the scene because he had a defined purpose. His "destiny" was to win the WHC. That was his gimmick. However, WWE never let him reach that goal in a way that made sense. He lost when he finally challenged for the WHC and ended up backing into a WWE title reign. That was never the purpose of his character in 2011 so the fans rejected him and he's never got back on his feet since because 80% of the time, he is a time-filler working six shows straight with Ziggler or Sheamus with zero direction to his character. You can draw parallels to several of the current guys who are in creative limbo right now.

Bottom Line: As long as the Shield members stay true to their characters and have a clear directive each time they are booked on TV, they will remain strong and the fans will buy into it because they are part of a logical, flowing, moving story.

    ReplyDelete
  144. He would've overcome the Goldberg stuff if he had won that Cell match. WWE had a golden opportunity there because the story was good with Punk being the cowardly champion. That was one of the last PPV mains that I was legitimately interested in the booking and did not know how it would shake out. Ryback should've won and held the title until TLC when he dropped it back to Punk. The record-long title reign meant nothing as soon as it was over anyway, so they wouldn't have really lost anything there.

    ReplyDelete
  145. I agree with Batista. Bad timing and seen as the WWEs "screw you" to the YES movement. If Batista came back now, especially considering the Bryan injury, he would be embraced as a babyface.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Don't forget thq went bust. Maybe that affects it.

    ReplyDelete
  147. He can't do a shooting star press either.

    ReplyDelete
  148. That was damn awkward, wasn't it? Not quite what one hoped for. I believe he apologised to Gervais later and said he was "trying something but it didn't really work". I think he was trying to make the awkward comedy guy really awkward for comedic effect, or something, but it just wasn't funny.

  149. I will never understand Columbus Day being a US Holiday

    ReplyDelete
  150. Just SmackDown. Raw was pretty good for the most part.

    ReplyDelete
  151. WWE tried to defend themselves with the Smackdown brand going to shit by claiming lack of star people, which was why he saw JBL get the megapush, but WWE could have easily prestented a watchable tv show with Undertaker, Booker, Eddie, RVD and Rey on top.

    ReplyDelete
  152. I pick Mag 7 just because it was so boring and unnecessary. Scott Steiner was over enough as a monster heel without being bogged down with a lame stable and we didn't need to see Rick Steiner and Roadwarrior Animal pushed to the moon in 2001 either.

  154. I remember a thing on wwe.com once saying he's a big family man and doesn't like to travel much, he just hits indies in the northeast on occasion for fun and a quick buck. Probably half the reason he even came back to wwf at this time.

  159. I remember as a fully fledged mark listening in bewilderment at the WCW announcers shitting on MIA every time they were...in action. Booker T - GI Bro - got the most damning with faint praise.

Happily, he was out of the stable and winning world titles in not too long.
