Absolutely love this match, though. I just looked it up elsewhere to watch it.
The thing that bothers me so much is the sheer amount of talent WCW had on the roster and yet the product ending up being piss poor more often than not due to booking stupidity and underutilization of assets. You literally could book 2 years of good storylines from that roster and never get stale if they weren't so busy trying to keep the same old tired names at the top of the card.
I never laughed so hard in my life when that midget Beetlejuice from the Stern show called Jarrett a slapnuts and Jarrett absolutely annihilated him with the guitar backstage. I don't know why I thought that was so damn hilarious. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MQRXbLU19k
Benoit had to have some unbridled hatred of kevn sullivan to leave after winning the belt and being mired in midcard hell in wwf for many years before he got back to the pinnacle. and with the big gold belt to boot.
This doesn't even touch on the insanity of things like right-to-work states where conservative legislatures have all but made it illegal to form unions. I actually do political work for a union and it crazy to see the response I get when I'm in uniform (in a heavily pro-union state, no less). I walked into a supermarket one day just to use the bathroom and the store's security pounced on me before I could even get through the door. I had to assure the guy I wouldn't talk to a single employee and even then I wasn't allowed to walk around the store.
Part of the union problem, though, is also tied into how some unions intimidate non-unionized workers to join (hence the support of card check and not secret ballot) and a history of corruption in some union organizations linked to organized crime. Not saying that corporations are all powerful and awesome (because they aren't) but the shoe falls on both sides. The fact that some unions contribute most of their funds to political candidates in opposition to what their members want (e.g. the NEA, the largest teachers' union in the country, has a membership that is around 52% Republican, yet 98% of its funds go to Democrats) also hurts them. For example, I never joined the teachers' union in my state because they stand for political policies that have NOTHING to do with education and I don't want them using my dues for that purpose.
This has nothing to do with pro wrestling, though. I'd agree these guys need a union just like coal miners because they are inflicting a physical toll on their bodies and carry a significant risk of suffering life debilitating injuries every time they step in the ring. All other professional athletes have unions, so WWE stars should have one too.
I'm sort of surprised they haven't tried to do a retread of the Chyna character or at least a woman that challenges the men. They could've done that with Kharma I guess (and she did do a Rumble) but she had to leave for personal reasons.
The ONLY chance any mutiny would have a chance of working is if Cena got behind it. Without him, the company wouldn't be in that good of shape. However, there's just no chance of that happening.
Misawa was almost running AJPW anyway, along with being a practical god to the fans. So talent, and the TV more importantly, could follow him with confidence to another promotion. I don't see the circumstances in America working the same.
I'm still sort of surprised that the WWF only ran 4 matches at that pay-per-view. However, they were all awesome and quite frankly, if they had used any other workers they wouldn't have come close to matching what those matches did.
No. No he wasn't. Everything about him screamed guy you would beat up in middle school. From his tank tops to his jorts to his sunken eyes with deep bags. Fuck every single thing about Billy Kidman.
No. He just stole my grandmothers tank top and was a shitty piece of shit that wasn't worth any push ever. Seriously, billy fucking Kidman was never going to get to the next level. He was billy Kidman.
Of course they *can*. They just will not. There is a difference.
I realize that you know this already - I'm responding to the general question, not you in particular.
The current setup allows Vince to be arbitrary. With a set table of payment rates and so forth based on published numbers and known data - people could know where they stand (within a range on a table likely) and have a rough expectation of their result based on things they could see for themselves. Large differences from the expected would be noticed ...
That arbitrariness has value to Vince... it allows for all sorts of manipulation, punishment, and reward based on the whims of management.
Wasn't it Jericho who told the story of being surprised at the difference in payout between him and HHH from a PPV? He went and complained and got given more money with little pushback. But for everyone who doesn't complain the money stays in the WWE's coffers.
Oh yeah, that's what I was saying above. But, during those three months on that they would tour, he probably put a lot of damage on his body. It will be interesting to see if there's any long term effects. I mean, he wouldn't have gotten sign had he not passed the physical, so that's a good sign.
If someone took my hot wife from me I would do the same. It's not like he was going to be taking money out of his pocket. Just lose some scripted matches/
Pushing him down the card is taking money out of his pocket especially when you can get a much better deal from the WWF and not be in the middle of a sinking ship.
I always thought the whole appeal of WCW was the guaranteed contract stuff. I suppose they did get PPV payouts if you were higher on the card. My bad. And that sucks that Sullivan beat her. Nancy deserved better. Glad things worked out for the best all around.
Ernest the Cat Miller as the Commissioner was actually pretty good. He was the assigned member of the heel faction, and of course as all heel authority figures, he claimed everything would be fair and impartial..... Except that due to his over inflated ego, he really did mean it! So very often, he did go against his heel faction because he so badly wanted to keep his word. So it was one of the rare refreshing twists for a Heel GM.
One example is that he claimed there would never be any interference in matches from now on. Yeah right, eh? But when booker T got screwed by a run in, Miller walked in and said "Didn't I say No Interference??" And he restarted the match, and Booker won.
Eh I always thought Miller's best character was The Ayatollah. I mean lets face it he and The Ram had some legendary matches in the 80's and their 08 rematch rivals ONLY the Rock vs Hogan in terms of nostalgia.
The renewed attention, FINALLY, on new, younger talent. From the Natural Born Thrillers to the too-late-too-matter cruiserweight tag division.
Okay, so Reno vs. Big Vito may have not been the answer to beating the WWE. But go back and watch the late 2000 Nitro and Thunder where they are in the UK. They have a very respectable hardcore match, the crowd are very appreciative, and finally, in front of a hot audience, you can see the younger guys get excited *themselves*. And that in turn is what gets me as a viewer, into the action.
You can make a case for Ms Elizabeth. One locked her in dressing rooms...the other might have been responsible for her OD...In retrospect maybe she SHOULD have gone with Hogan.
One more comment about GM Miller, you know how no matches seem to be booked on shows anymore, and they're just added as they go? So sometimes we wonder kayfabe wise "what if no matches are booked?"
Well once Miller was in his office, and one of his assistants indeed said "there are no matches going on. What do we do?" He just went something like "oh right, a match, uh.... Just put those 3 boy band dancers and those 3 japanese guys, they always have fun matches. Go tell them". Then he goes back to whatever he was doing.
Nash must have loved that role as the coach/mentors of the Thrillers actually. He never had to wrestle, just cut fun inspirational promos, and still got his full pay on his huge guaranteed contract. Da good life!
True, I'm not complaining. I liked the 2-hour IYH shows. They were cheap and if you got one good match, which you got on the first 3 IYH shows (Hakushi-Bret @ 1, Jarrett-HBK @ 2, the Triple Crown tag match @ 3), then it was worth the money.
There were guaranteed contracts, but I wouldn't assume Benoit was making what Nash, Hogan and other guys at the tippy-tippy-tippy top were making. I'm not sure he would ever make that kind of scratch in that environment.
Jarrett could have gotten over sooner than he did if he cut off that long hair sooner and gotten rid of those suspenders chipendale tights. Buzz cut Jarrett without the singlet suspenders could have gotten over if people weren't constantly reminded of the double J, A, double R, E, double T, E gimmick he did in his career in WWF. I was a fan of the slapnuts gimmick in WCW, which furthered his character development as TNA champ.
It definitely has to affect tax somehow. I work in collections and I know that bonus checks are taxed at a lot higher federal rate. New York State. Not sure if that is like that everywhere.
My brother had all the WCW ppvs from 99-2000 on VHS. He gave them to one of his friends who became a local Indy wrestler. Still makes me mad that I couldn't get them from him. Back then I didn't care, but now I wish I had them. Thank God for the network.
yep. I'll never forget when Blockbuster tried to have a manager's meeting with us to teach us how to dissuade employees from joining unions and how awful they were. I informed my District Manager I would not attend and that my employees were free to organize if they wanted and use the break room and break time legally for any union campaigning just as the law provides.
union dues cannot be used for political purposes. Unions have Political action committess (just like the tea party, Koch Brothers, Wal-Mart, etc.) that union members can voluntarily contribute to. Federal law prohibits union dues from being used for political purposes. Unions typically ask members at hire if they want to have a deduction from their check for the PAC. Many members choose to. However it is a myth that union dues (much less so-called fair share fees) are going to unions to campaign for candidates or causes.
Those are bizarre numbers you bring up by the way. I have met very few teachers in my years that are Republicans. I would have to do more research but I would be shocked if that number is anywhere near legit. That said, even if 99% of NEA members were Republican, Dems generally support higher funding for schools and higher salaries for teachers, therefore it is the union's JOB to work for those issues, regardless of teacher's stands on abortion, gay marriage, immigration, etc.
The argument I'm making is not that unions take member dues to fund candidates, but more that some do not agree with the political candidates their union chooses to support via the PACs you identify. Thus, they sometimes opt not to join period (as I chose to do). Of course, I also chose not to join the teachers' union in my state because they are completely ineffective in helping good teachers fired without cause (their legal help is crap).
The year I did high school debate (circa 2002 or 2003) that number was part of my research. It's likely changed since, but it was used a lot in rounds. In retrospect, that might've been NEA + AFT members. For history's sake, Ronald Reagan actually won the vote of a majority of NEA members in 1980 over Jimmy Carter, despite Carter creating the Department of Education in 1979 to satisfy the NEA, who endorsed him in that election. That was shocking to me when doing my master's thesis on the subject last year.
Same thing happened in the Clique era when Diesel saw some payoffs that Shawn & Razor had received, he got pissed called up Vince and voila the money was wired to him the next day.
For any baseball fans, I'd highly recommend watching "The Battered Bastards of Baseball" on Netflix. It's a documentary about Bing Russell's minor league team in Seattle. Pretty interesting.
What an idiot that guy turned out to be. Burned every bridge in the business and now probably has to take out a loan to afford gas money to indy spot shows.
This match is awesome, I just hope they don't give KENTA some stupid new name and dumb gimmick. Also, I'd like to think he can still work his style of match, but that's of course just a pipe dream. He will be forced to change his style too.

Wasn't this posted here, like, a week ago?
ReplyDeleteIf you love stiff kicks, think of this match as a Kaval you can eat buffet!
ReplyDeletehttp://youtu.be/bGhQ2XqjVog
ReplyDeleteMy mistake.
ReplyDeleteHope they eventually put up the show a week before. A whole Raw of Bret vs Owen sounds great.
ReplyDeleteThe thing that bothers me so much is the sheer amount of talent WCW had on the roster and yet the product ending up being piss poor more often than not due to booking stupidity and underutilization of assets. ReplyDeletehow about hte janitorial duties of hacksaw jim duggan, i really like that angle as he did remind me of a janitor i had in hs.
ReplyDeleteI never laughed so hard in my life when that midget Beetlejuice from the Stern show called Jarrett a slapnuts and Jarrett absolutely annihilated him with the guitar backstage. I don't know why I thought that was so damn hilarious. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MQRXbLU19k
ReplyDeleteRusso and those crazy clever acronyms!
ReplyDeleteto think he almost went from russos champ to a fan boy of a cruiser weight mid card act
ReplyDeleteBenoit, Guerrero, Malenko and Saturn telling them to screw off was a high point for me.
ReplyDeleteHis World Title push came WAY too late and it was almost like they did it to apologize to the fans for fucking around with him for so long.
ReplyDeleteYes. I wonder whatever happened to Pamela Paulshock. She was a smoke show.
ReplyDeleteBenoit had to have some unbridled hatred of kevn sullivan to leave after winning the belt and being mired in midcard hell in wwf for many years before he got back to the pinnacle. and with the big gold belt to boot.
ReplyDeleteok WWF tv recovered well in 2k, but 1999 Raw was borderline unwatchable as well.
ReplyDeleteBilly Kidman was awesome.
ReplyDeleteHard to believe this was nearly 10 years ago.
ReplyDeleteWas the cruiserweight tag division in 2000?
ReplyDeleteBTW, want me to do anything for BoD Raw or are you good to go this week?
ReplyDelete2001
ReplyDeleteSure.
ReplyDeleteThe CAT was nice on the mic! It was great to see him have a role in The Wrestler.
ReplyDeleteOk then nothing
ReplyDeleteWatching that terrible train wreck on a weekly basis.
ReplyDeleteI mean you could see Vince Russo killing it slowly
The radicals leaving and the return of Hogan, up until Bash at the Beach that is.
ReplyDeleteThis doesn't even touch on the insanity of things like right-to-work states where conservative legislatures have all but made it illegal to form unions. ReplyDeleteYeah, didn't Punk get heat because he didn't follow the dress code and pointed out how hypocritical that was?
ReplyDeleteWhy would Benoit hate Sullivan? Wasn't it Benoit who stole Kevin's wife?
ReplyDeleteMisawa was almost running AJPW anyway, along with being a practical god to the fans. So talent, and the TV more importantly, could follow him with confidence to another promotion. I don't see the circumstances in America working the same.
ReplyDeleteHaha, that'd be great.
ReplyDeleteUnless your John Cena, who showed up to that one RAW last year with only 10 minutes left in the show!
ReplyDeleteIt's true. But in japan, wrestlers get more time off to heal in between shows and tours.
ReplyDeleteI'm still sort of surprised that the WWF only ran 4 matches at that pay-per-view. However, they were all awesome and quite frankly, if they had used any other workers they wouldn't have come close to matching what those matches did.
ReplyDeleteThat show IIRC, also features Nakano-Blayze, with BERTHA FAYE debuting!
ReplyDeleteNo. No he wasn't. Everything about him screamed guy you would beat up in middle school. From his tank tops to his jorts to his sunken eyes with deep bags. Fuck every single thing about Billy Kidman.
ReplyDeleteNo. He just stole my grandmothers tank top and was a shitty piece of shit that wasn't worth any push ever. Seriously, billy fucking Kidman was never going to get to the next level. He was billy Kidman.
ReplyDeleteHe knew Sullivan was going to bury him. Also Benoit knew the WCW belt meant nothing
ReplyDeleteNo he wash't.
ReplyDelete2001
ReplyDeleteSuperbrawl 2000
ReplyDeleteOf course they *can*. They just will not. There is a difference.

Kim Page heel turn, chick was banging

ReplyDeleteAlso Sullivan beat the shit out of her
Again, with this payout nonsense, I'm sure Punk is sitting at home smirking while counting all his investment checks.
ReplyDeleteHow many wrestlers know their bank routing numbers?
ReplyDeleteI always thought the whole appeal of WCW was the guaranteed contract stuff. I suppose they did get PPV payouts if you were higher on the card. My bad. And that sucks that Sullivan beat her. Nancy deserved better. Glad things worked out for the best all around.
ReplyDeleteDamn good show overall.
ReplyDeleteTHE AA MIKKEL! THERE IS NO WAY JOHN CENA CAN AA THE BIG SHOW!

That bastard Sullivan!! Thank god when went to Benoit, who she would be 100% safe and secure with.
ReplyDeleteIknowright?
ReplyDeleteIs there someone with worst taste in men than Nancy Sullivan? Maybe being passed around a wrestling locker room wasn't the best move
ReplyDeleteWhat do you think he invests in? Hot Topic and Pepsi?
ReplyDeleteEh I always thought Miller's best character was The Ayatollah. I mean lets face it he and The Ram had some legendary matches in the 80's and their 08 rematch rivals ONLY the Rock vs Hogan in terms of nostalgia.

Except for Mike Sanders, who always sucked.
You can make a case for Ms Elizabeth. One locked her in dressing rooms...the other might have been responsible for her OD...In retrospect maybe she SHOULD have gone with Hogan.
ReplyDeleteIt was the era of two-hour PPVs, plus the main event was HUGE. Like 40 minutes.
ReplyDeleteEMail sent.
ReplyDeleteGlad Kenta will get sometime to get acclimated down in NXT. I wish they had only done the same for Mistico.
ReplyDeleteOne more comment about GM Miller, you know how no matches seem to be booked on shows anymore, and they're just added as they go? So sometimes we wonder kayfabe wise "what if no matches are booked?"

ReplyDeleteAlso Scott Steiner becoming a main eventer
ReplyDeleteAmong the (too many) wrestling-related images I can't get out of my head, I now have to add King Kong Bundy doing a sunset flip.
ReplyDeleteThere were guaranteed contracts, but I wouldn't assume Benoit was making what Nash, Hogan and other guys at the tippy-tippy-tippy top were making. I'm not sure he would ever make that kind of scratch in that environment.
ReplyDeleteI've read he supposedly deals in a lot of real estate.
ReplyDeleteNor mon smile lay... Or something like that.
ReplyDeletePut him in the camel clutch, break his back, then fuck his ass!
ReplyDelete2000 Billy Kidman is better than current fat Billy Kidman who is Cranky Vince's personal boy toy.
ReplyDeleteI hear he owns two houses. And a dog.
ReplyDeleteListening to some 90s his while I paint one of or bedrooms, something occurred to me.
ReplyDeleteLisa Loeb is tops among eye glass wearing ladies.

ReplyDeleteI feel like a marathon of Saturday Night's Main Event on Saturday Night is a bit too on-the-nose, but I'm certainly not complaining.

ReplyDeleteOnly five months of programming until Nitro! I'm excited to watch some of those again.
