Quick Note

The spambots are getting completely out of hand lately, so I changed the Disqus settings to "verified e-mail only" which should hopefully curtail it.  This also means that you need be a verified user and not a joke poster with a fake address, but then that's no big loss either.  We'll see how this goes.

  6. So here I am with my thoughts of you

And this world I've left for me

Stoic faces when I think of you

    And how I once believed

So now you call me, but you know I won't let you through

    I've myself to deceive

    So leave the memories alone

    I don't want to see

The way it is, as to how it used to be

Leave the memories alone, don't change a thing

And I'll hold you here in my memory

So I find me in your garden now

A sad smile for the scene

And all the flowers that we planted now

    Taken by the weeds

But in my minds eye, you know they still bloom for me

They stand tall there, in that summer breeze

    Leave the memories alone

    I don't want to see

The way it is, as to how it used to be

Leave the memories alone, don't change a thing

And I'll just hold you here in my memory

    In my memory, yeah

    So leave the memories alone

    I don't want to see

The way it is, as to how it used to be

Leave the memories alone, don't change a thing

And I'll hold you in my memory

    You'll never change

    You'll never change

    You'll never change

    You will never change

  7. Has anyone noticed the rise in spam boys coincided with the loss of WWE's profitability? I'm not entirely certain the spam bots aren't some plan from Vince to make lost money back?

  47. I'm a real dead-ender when it comes to caring about results and titles being the most important thing, so I agree with you. At the same time, it helps having the best promo of all-time out there. Heck, even Magnum, who is nobody's idea of a primo talker, is able to sell a match and a title better than 90 percent of WWE's roster.

  55. Yep. People seem to only remember Nitro-era Tony, but back when he gave a damn, there were few better than him. I think the passage of time and having to suffer through Cole/Lawler/JBL has given people a better appreciation of Tony's 80s to mid-90s mic work.

Payback last year. Kaitlyn vs AJ -phenomenal, and they followed it up
with a good outing at MITB as well. Trish vs Stephanie from No Way Out in 2001 was very good. AJ vs Natty Neidhart from Main Event this year was really good. And the woman's match on each of the NXT specials have been fantastic as well.

  71. Watching the first ever Raw/Smackdown draft. So many things make me sad here: First, Curt Hennig in obviously fucked up on something, and he's still doing some crazy athletic stuff.

Secondly, Vince gets to pick first because he "won a coin toss." Seriously? They couldn't have booked a match to win the #1 pick? A Flair representative v. a Vince representative?

Third, they pick the Rock for Smackdown and he's gone a week later to promote movies, and soon to be gone forever.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Damnit, now I want to go to Fuddruckers.

  76. The first WCW title match on WWF TV should have been Booker T v. DDP, not Booker T v. Buff Bagwell. And it should have happened the following week in Atlanta, not in Tacoma.

    Just saying that.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Everything was pretty awful because they lost Rock and Austin right away, then the headline World title feuds were Hunter v. Hogan, Hogan v. Undertaker, and Undertaker v. Hunter.

  78. The Love-Matic Grampa!July 26, 2014 at 2:06 PM

On the first "Old School RAW", Cowboy Bob Orton did a simple, no-frills interview with Mean Gene Okerlund that put the then-current roster to shame. Worse, the segment was clearly positioned to be a quaint "nostalgia moment", but Bob did a better job putting over his son AND the main event than all the video packages and 20-minute gabfests in the world. If you can get someone like me excited about a Randy Orton match, then you must be doing something right.

Sometimes, simple is best. Not all the time, of course, but still.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I remember being so pissed at the time because I didn't get Smackdown, and the Raw roster looked horrible. But they ended up both sucking and I stopped watching soon after anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I believe it's a former name for Thailand, aye.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Magnum vs. Flair wasn't planned for Starrcade '86. The original main events were:

World title: Ric Flair vs. Ron Garvin
U.S. title Steel Cage "I Quit": Nikita Koloff vs. Magnum TA
Night of the Sky-Walkers: Road Warriors vs. Midnight Express
World TV Title First Blood: Dusty Rhodes vs. Tully Blanchard
World Tag Team Title Steel Cage: Rock & Roll Express vs. Arn & Ole Anderson

I assume Magnum wins the title during the 1987 Great American Bash tour and drops it to Flair as Starrcade '87. Magnum feuds with Barry Windham over the U.S. title in 1988 and Lex Luger in 1989. By 1991, Magnum winds up in the WWF.

    ReplyDelete
  92. They show the packages they use to sell the PPV ON THE ACTUAL PPV. It makes zero sense.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Maybe Flair's, not Hogan's. But that's more on the NWA than Magnum.

    ReplyDelete
  94. How do you know this? If Magnum wasn't supposed to be in the main event, why did they change the main event?

    ReplyDelete
  95. Another in the "not necessarily the best, but certainly different" department: the Ivory/Tori hardcore match from a late-night Raw (due to the U.S. Open coverage pushing Raw back):

    http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xa6r2_wwe-ivory-vs-tori-hardcore-match_tech

This match had a little fire and hatred to it, which is something that has always generally been lacking in the women's division. Sadly, the feud didn't go anywhere.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Trish/Mickie from WM22 is probably my favourite, with Mickie/Melina from Backlash and Kim/Terrell just behind. Kaitlyn/AJ from Payback and Melina/McCool from NOC are two good ones I haven't seen mentioned yet.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Before the accident, Jim Crockett announced Dusty Rhodes or Ron Garvin would challenge Flair for the title at Starrcade. Leading up to Starrcade, Magnum had been feuding with Jim Garvin on tv. It was used to give him a house show opponent until the steel cage "I Quit" match.

Anyway, the match listing is stuff I've heard over the years.

    ReplyDelete
  98. I really don't know. My inclination is to say that whoever it was is not currently on the roster, but I'm not sure at all.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Stop the presses. Scott rated a midget match.

    heh.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Only high-heel shoes can blind the Hulkster, brother!

  103. Hold that 10 for Johnny B. BadJuly 26, 2014 at 4:43 PM

Title vs career? Does that mean that they finish a Starrcade with Ronnie Garvin celebrating with the title?

    ReplyDelete
  104. MikeyMike, WitnessJuly 26, 2014 at 4:51 PM

Wait, why Ron Garvin? If Magnum wasn't the plan, there'd be no reason it wouldn't still be Flair-Nikita.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Natalya vs Charlotte NXT this year, not the best of all time but it blows away anything done in the Divas division in the last 5 years

    ReplyDelete
  106. AverageJoeEverymanJuly 26, 2014 at 5:19 PM

It's good though when watching old shows. Reminds you of the reasons and lead up to the matches.

    ReplyDelete
  107. it feels "worthless" if they are just gonna ignore everything that happens in it for the movies.

why be "emotionally invested" in something that is being portrayed as really not relevant?

    ReplyDelete
  108. They soooo need to bring back stadium shows..... watching the NWA at old Veterans Stadium was the best!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  109. I still maintain, he wins the title at Starrcade '86, Crockett remains in business at least another decade.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Nah. Starrcade '86 comes and Flair retains in a Dusty finish and then retains again in their rematch.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Before Magnum's accident, Jim Crockett announced either Garvin or Dusty would challenge Flair at Starrcade. JCP wasn't going with Flair vs. Dusty for the 3rd straight year, plus Dusty had been feuding with Tully most of the year. With Magnum-Nikita getting blown off at Starrcade, that left Garvin, who was over in JCP's main cities.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Oh, you mean the people in charge of WWE? Because it seems like they're the main ones who simply cannot let go of that idea. The fans are willing to believe in the belts and in results, if only WWE would LET them.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Dear lord, WWE stole the idea for Night of Champions from the AWA. This show proves it.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Love the story on the AWA DVD of how during the show, David Crockett is trying to sign AWA guys over to WCW, pure balls there.

    ReplyDelete
  115. I always love the explanation that the only reason Greg was never AWA World Champion was that whenever Verne announced plans to do it, every promoter under him (who knew what a disaster Greg as champion would be) threatened to quit if he went through with it.

    ReplyDelete
  116. I always forget you and Selby are British.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Signs certainly pointed to Magnum going Up North at some point. I wonder just what his gimmick or character would have been. I suppose in that timeframe guys still got to keep their ringnames for the most part.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Praise Jebus.

    ReplyDelete
  119. But that was always been the case -- the Star Wars movies have been ignoring the EU as far back as the original Marvel Comics Star Wars series. Millions of people watch the Star Wars movies. Thousands read the EU stuff. The movies will always be the priority.

Do you think it would be fair to the screenwriters of the new movies to force them to write new movies that fit within the context of hundreds of books, comics, and video games that a majority of the movie audience has no knowledge of? Who would want that job?

You can personally invest yourself in anything you want as "canon." Like Shadows of the Empire? Well, you can count that. Don't like the Jedi Academy books? Ignore them. Make your own personal canon with whatever you're happy with.
