  3. If WWE wants to cut more corners with budget cuts, they should assign Ric Flair to be in charge of it. He has always been known for being a penny pincher during the past 4 decades.

  5. If they want to keep pushing Miz, Jericho should put him over at NoC.

I liked the idea someone here had last night with Reigns squashing Miz, Warrior style, and having a great IC run.

  8. I will hear none of this criticism of Stephanie. You're basically saying you don't like the sound of her voice. I can kind of understand that, but she is delivering lines perfectly, and can sell anything with her facial expressions. She was NEVER able to do that as the Smackdown GM back in the day, and I always hated those segments with her. Now I look forward to them because she is a true A+ performer.

  12. His talking points at the beginning of each episode are the same damn things every week, he rambles like an old man, and he's starting to make himself and his stories the focal point of his shows. His guests are left to laugh uncomfortably and agree with JR's take on things. If they're lucky, they can get a few words in edgewise.

Of course, old man Ross gets defensive when he's called out on it, claiming that it's conversational, but conversation requires both parties to contribute.

Jericho's return has been awful. At least last year he had that sick match with Punk at Payback.

  15. Cooler_Than_GuntherAugust 5, 2014 at 9:00 AM

don't be so hard and yourself. you really don't need to refer to yourself as "out of touch cunt"

    ReplyDelete
  16. It's been the law of diminishing returns with Jericho. He's still got it and could easily be slotted into a main event program, but WWE just doesn't know what to do with him except throw him against their next project.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Just unify them and make them an actual step towards a World Title shot. If they released their own top 10 rankings and made the IC Champ an automatic top three contender, legit main eventers could go after it as an avenue towards a World Title match.

    ReplyDelete
  18. MikeyMike, WitnessAugust 5, 2014 at 9:11 AM

It's quite repetitive. He should just retire.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I'm sure WWE is paying him enough to make it worthwhile. They desperately needed him this summer as a house show draw since Bryan is injured, Cena is filming movies, and Punk is gone.

As long as he can still go, I'd like to see him in the ring. I just want to see him booked better.

    ReplyDelete
  20. At least he's a veteran that is happy with putting young guys over. Aka, knows his value, knows his role, is not a mark for himself.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I see your point, but the difference is two things: a)At least they still delivered a match, unlike what happened at the PPV and b)like Peyton_Drinking mentioned above this match wasn't hyped or was treated like a focal point of the show (as much Ambrose/Rollins). I don't even know if Rollins has faced RVD in a singles match (I'm sure it will show up on some random Smackdown or Big Event or whatever it is called), but people aren't gonna care about Rollins/RVD as much as Rollins/Ambrose.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Right, though I still think he can put people over and just be booked better. He's one of the best veterans the business ever had because he isn't desperately clinging to his "spot."

Though HHH has been much better lately, I think his career makes such an interesting contrast with Jericho's. Jericho never seemed to refuse to put anyone over, while HHH... well, you know.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Has there been examples of HHH "refusing" to put people over though? Or was he simply liked by Vince and management, who chose to book him to go over? He just didn't campaign vigorously to change the plans so he can lose.

    ReplyDelete
  24. What a douche. Is there some big brother from an 80's TV show we can get this guy hooked up with and get him the hell away from THIS BUSINESS?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Then you're a part of the problem.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Even Gene Snitsky thinks that Russo should accept some blame

    ReplyDelete
  27. Yeah. This 6 week Miz run. People are just dying to see it come to an end. It would totally catapult both Reigns and the IC title. Totally.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I'm sure people will just call bitterness on that one.

In fairness, I guess, he constantly enforces that he wasn't really in on the creative process at that point.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yeah because I totally said he should beat him next week, definitely. That is completely totally what I said.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I like this bit, you're going to pretend you can't read to try to insult me, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  33. There are the stories of him changing the finish to the match and angle of the love triangle feud with Angle. There are also stories from the creative staff of how RVD was supposed to win the World title in 2002, but HHH got directly involved, stalled the process, and eventually, never let RVD touch the main event scene again for nearly another 4 years.

Those are just off the top of my head. Does he hold people down or does Vince just favor HHH? As usual, the truth is somewhere in the middle.

    ReplyDelete
  34. But that's not what you said.

    ReplyDelete
  35. " The title of the book is Total Non-Stop Agony, and the plans are to release it digitally through pyroandballyhoo.com."

So, surely he means the agony that he caused the company and it's employees to go through, right?

    ReplyDelete
  36. I think it was Seth Mates who was there at the time and has confirmed a lot of the politicking HHH was doing in terms keeping his spot in 2002. He's not the only one to tell the story, either.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Todd Pettingill had the worst mullet of all time.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Oh, i'm not disputing it.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Exactly.

I think it would be a cool WrestleMania moment after you have Miz keep sliming his way to keeping his title. I know they have Reigns on a fast track than that, but he could use some more seasoning, as many here agree on.

    ReplyDelete
  40. There is however a huge difference between politicking and straight up changing the boss's mind, compared to the boss making the decision, and the wrestler outright refusing to do it. (aka, Bret in Montreal). If he's in Vince's ear and can talk himself into winning, more power to him.

    ReplyDelete
  41. :)

Even to Rumble or something, I'd rather see Reigns in an actual match there than protected again behind a battle royal, though I imagine that's a pipedream since he's definitely getting a Rumble win sometime in his career. I haven't watched much since Mania so I can't really judge how any of those boys are doing.

    ReplyDelete
  42. There are stories that Hunter was in on booking meetings for a while before that, so it isn't hard to assume he was heavily influencing the direction of the product.

    ReplyDelete
  43. That's....still a better name for a promotion.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think Reigns can get there but it would be best for him if they didn't shove him to the top and dump too much on him. Let him work with guys and learn in the ring and really be ready to be the guy. They will need him more in 2016 than 2015 anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Jericho gets less interesting with each return, and the lame jokes that weren't funny 12 years ago still aren't funny. He had his day, but now I just don't want to see him on TV anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Yeah, that was my idea. One of Reigns biggest problems is that the IC title has been so devalued it is no longer seen as a stepping stone to the world title, so he can't really use it like Warrior. Still, it would be a nice way to hold him over until the Rumble.

    ReplyDelete
  47. It's a shame because he's one of my personal favorites, but you're completely right.

It doesn't help that the returns are so frequent either, it feels like he'll do them basically any time Fozzy isn't on tour. If it was a few years between returns the excitement would definitely last longer.

    ReplyDelete
  48. It's tough because he is so damn great as a heel, but these short runs aren't conducive to those long, slow build feuds he excelled at in 2008-2011.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I don't know if he's trolling or not, but personally I'm enjoying Miz's current run.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I rarely get a week day off, why aren't we doing daily threads about Kathie Lee and Hoda? This show is the greatest thing ever. These really really old unattractive women are drinking on menopause...on television. 9/10

    ReplyDelete
  51. Worst_in_the_WorldAugust 5, 2014 at 9:47 AM

Yeah, Miz is a fantastic heel right now. I just hope they have someone awesome in mind as the face they want to play Warrior to Miz's Honky Tonk Man. A squash win over Miz in a month or two (he's obviously retaining against Ziggler) would absolutely be huge for a rising face.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I have to assume that even you can see the difference between having Brie Bella in the face role of this type of match is just a shade different than having Steve Fucking Austin in the face role of the same type of match. Especially with the extra layer of Bischoff/Austin's real-life background helping sell the feud.

"2 characters selling hatred for each other can be enough" when people actually give a shit about the face. NO ONE cares about Brie Bella.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Worst_in_the_WorldAugust 5, 2014 at 9:49 AM

HAHAHA, I think the Keith one might be a stretch...

    ReplyDelete
  54. I am a little disappointed endgame can't come the way it's supposed to. You know in the pre-concussion days, the endgame to this absolutely would be someone smashing a chair over Miz's head and making him bleed.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Well, you didn't say when and frankly it doesn't matter when. If Reigns ended Miz's 400 day reign it would do nothing for Reigns or the IC title the point stands. Longevity on that issue means nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Worst_in_the_WorldAugust 5, 2014 at 9:52 AM

I think the Miz push is worthwhile IF they have someone in mind to squash him for the title in a few months. Shitty worker or not, Miz is an effective heel on the mic and crowds are hating his ass right now.
If Ambrose or Zayn or Cesaro or a returning Bad News Barrett squash his ass in 30 seconds for the IC title in a few months, it'd be pretty cool.

Of course though he'll probably lose it to Kofi Kingston on Main Event.

    ReplyDelete
  57. You could have just debated that point from the start.

I think it could. They don't do it, but they could make Reigns, Miz and the Title mean something pretty easily. For whatever reason they don't seem interested in doing it.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Worst_in_the_WorldAugust 5, 2014 at 9:54 AM

I think there's a SLIGHT chance of this, actually. I mean, if Brock really is gonna leave Cena in a pool of shit, piss, blood, vomit, and pissy bloody shit... well maybe they don't want that to close the show? Especially if the Brie/Steph match involves HHH eating a knee from Daniel Bryan and the crowd doing a YES chant.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Working with The Miz is just what Reigns needs to get to where they need him to be. Usurping Miz then a long feud with Del Rio. That's how you get Reigns to the top. He's gotta work matches. Work against workers. Absorb all he can before he can be truly elevated.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Well, then I rephrase my statement: it's a huge contrast between Jericho, who never seems to politic, and HHH, who seemingly spent the better part of a decade politicking.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Yup. Right up there with "If this happened, everybody would say," and "you guys all think," and all the other phrases you use to make your strawman arguments against the collective blog.

I do love the irony of you complaining about this, though. It would be like Abeyance bitching about people leaving short comments that are devoid of insight.

    ReplyDelete
  62. That's a great call.

    ReplyDelete
  63. You don't feel an utter disdain whenever he replies to an e-mail or comment? And I'm not even blaming him either. Just an observation.

    ReplyDelete
  64. really? NO ONE? Not even a single person?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Watching Raw last night and all the Network plugging, I again was struck by what an awful idea it is to have HEELS as the heads of the company. You have HHH and Stephanie out there shilling the Network and what does the crowd do? They BOO, because your company is represented by the most hated people on the show.
Main event of a PPV announced? BOOO.
    WWE Network for $9.99? BOOOO.

So fucking stupid. I know everyone knows it's fake and that HHH isn't really a bad guy, but it doesn't matter. It's completely ass backwards to spend all your TV time building up bad will towards the company itself.

HHH and Stephanie are awesome at playing heels, and they put Daniel Bryan and The Shield over really strong. But it's just not worth it. This whole "WWE itself is a heel" shit needs to end. Not only is it creatively bankrupt, but it makes it really hard to sell things like the Network.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Let's be fair, some of those e-mails deserve disdain. He's a lot better in private correspondence for whatever reason.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Hogan is still under contract, right? Isn't that was he was specifically hired to do, shill stuff like Mania and the WWE Network? (or the WWE Universe).

    ReplyDelete
  68. How to completely ignore the point and instead go after the verbiage. To be expected, I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Or Bad News Barrett. If they build it right, let Miz play the Honky Tonk role for a few months, and then do a deal where Bad News returns as his surprise opponent and squashes him? Bigtime new face right there.

Or debut Zayn by winning the IC title.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Pfff... you just THINK you're special!!! [/jealous]

    ReplyDelete
  71. Oh, I meant the part about the unconditional worship from his fanbase.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Ha ha, good ol' staple head Reigns, always good for a new staples in the head gag.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I thought one of the best ideas I heard was to have kiosks at live events and have wrestlers there with a tech demonstrating the network and taking signups. If you signup? You get a picture with the star, etc. Make it right in your face, especially during the excitement of a live show.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Like you said, it would be great for really anyone they wanted to launch up the card. And yes, a debuting star or a sudden face-turn for someone would work best.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I was amazed at how easily Triple H got the crowd to start chanting "9.99" with him. Sports entertainment audiences really are sheep.

They should make Hulk Hogan the new Jack Tunney of the WWE. Have the "Board of Directors" make the decision that he will take care of running things on the programming, while Triple H and Stephanie do behind-the-scenes stuff. Make Hogan/Helmsley/McMahon appearances mean something and only do them when necessary.

Now I'm going back to today's QOTD.

    9.99!

    ReplyDelete
  76. But the people don't care about titles!!!!!! or something

    ReplyDelete
  77. Hogan should be brought back as WWE Commissioner.
WWE absolutely needs to blow off the Authority angle for good in a big way--- let's say Brie beats Steph at Summerslam, and Roman beats HHH at NoC, and therefore HHH just decides to see the error of his ways and turns face.

Bring in Hogan as the on-air authority, let him play it pretty much like Jack Tunney, and then you have a WWE representative who can announce main events and shill the Network with teh audience actually cheering.

Having HHH and Steph do it is just so counterproductive.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Ha, just said teh same thing below. Hogan in a Jack Tunney role is exactly what they need now.

    ReplyDelete
  79. They need Foley for this.

    ReplyDelete
  80. From Russo's TNA explanation below: " I regret even agreeing to be dishonest, deceitful and untruthful from the beginning, but the TRUTH is that I needed the income"

This makes me wonder: How exactly does Russo pay his bills? All of his professional life he worked for wrestling companies, and that's not the type of TV that pays residuals. He's never had a writing job outside of wrestling because his writing sucks.

Pyroandballyhoo can't be making him much money. Who would pay $6 a month to read his crap? Heck, Russo is writing articles for WhatCulture: http://whatculture.com/author/vince-russo -- and while you can make some money doing that, it ain't much from what I understand.

I'm sure he made some dough on the shoot interviews and books, but fans generally despise him so I can't imagine those books sold all that much.

    ReplyDelete
  81. "Day drunk like Kathie Lee."

    ReplyDelete
  82. Great minds, apparently...

    ReplyDelete
  83. Foley would be great, or Hogan, or even HBK if he'd be up for doing 1-2 TV appearances a month.

Stone Cold would obviously be the PERFECT guy for this role and could probably affect ratings, but I doubt he'd commit to anything even part time.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Just as long as they get rid of the whole "heel authority figure"
concept. It's just beyond stale beyond this point. Have Hogan just show up like Tunney did every few months to make big announcements.

Let's see how a wrestling show works without a figurehead booking matches every week. It only worked for 35+ years or so.

    ReplyDelete
  85. You know, if we stop treating Vince Russo as someone that matters, he'll eventually go away, right? No more shoot interviews, no hits on his website, no invitations to talk to Wade or Bruce or Jason or Dave or whoever else does a podcast. Fucking blacklist him and make him go away.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Yep, and I even suggested techs in big cities to just drive to your home and do it for you, at a minimal charge.

But yep, your idea is great too (would sure beat those credit card kiosks at sporting events)

    ReplyDelete
  87. WWE should've hired Austin, Hogan, Foley, HBK as WWE Network Ambassadors to shoot a hole load of promos plugging the Network and what you can do with your subscription.

    ReplyDelete
  88. He got PAID by WCW, IIRC. He probably tucked the dough away. I am sure TNA paid him decently for a while too. I can't imagine what type of person would purchase a VIP membership to read and listen to his nonsense.

    ReplyDelete
  89. You know, if the stories about VKM being grievously out of touch with modern popular culture are true, that Q&A had to be done by someone else...

    ReplyDelete
  90. It's all fucking Eric Bischoff's fault.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Keep Foley as far away from the current product as you possibly can.

    ReplyDelete
  92. He seemed to be more in touch at that time. I mean all those dubbed over commentaries on current news and what not. It seemed once he became totally isolated as a billionaire and was the only game in town is when he started his descent.

    ReplyDelete
  93. My one counter to that was Razor Ramon was created in 1992 because he had JUST SEEN Scarface and wanted to bite off the character.

As far as the overdubs go? Writers likely handed him "timely" copy to reference while he was in a booth doing voice over work. Although, I've heard interviews where people have said he's bad with entertainment, but he read the newspaper every day to mine stuff from

    ReplyDelete
  94. As others have said, there's a BIG difference between a big PPV match (and, in this case, arguably THE match that most people bought the PPV for) that was hyped for six weeks, and a "Raw" segment featuring a JTTS that only existed to serve the former anyway.

As you said, yes, "bait-and-switch is bad, unless it leads to something good", except in a non-sarcastic manner. Getting less than you expected is bad, getting more than you expected is good.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I think a compromise of the two ideas would have been the best way to go about it - yes, advertise RVD, but then let him get attacked backstage right before the match, meaning that a replacement is needed on short notice. At least that still keeps the pretense of The Authority feigning fairness.

Having RVD walk out and then going "uhh, nevermind" didn't make sense. Why would Trips/Steph want to appear fair a few hours earlier, only to not care later?

    ReplyDelete
  96. I still say the actual match was 5*, it was just the politics and post-match stuff that got everyone's blood boiling.

    ReplyDelete
  97. 100% agree. You want people to subscribe to The Network? Make that the only way to see Brock and the title.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Basic formatting would go a long way, too.

In Scott's reviews, he bolds the matches (and sometimes segments) and puts them on a separate line. It's a minor point but it makes a big difference in readability.

Here there is too much wall of text and the use of italics just makes it messier.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Rock/Cena II was never going to outdo the first, a fresh match-up was really needed. That leaves two options:

    1) If Vince INSISTED on having Rock in the main-event title match, then run either Rock/Punk or Rock/Cena/Punk. [Doing the former would also clear Cena to do the Taker match, with Taker at 20-0 going into the match, and the possibility of Taker's streak ending on the big round number.]

    2) Do Rock/Cena as the big "special attraction match" in the middle of the card (possibly for the WHC instead of the WWE title), and main-event with Punk's 500-day reign against Taker's streak.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Not really. Dull match and they lacked chemistry.

    ReplyDelete
  101. My only problem with that is they never established that Cesaro and Swagger actually liked each other. It always seemed like a tenuous, cordial-at-best working relationship.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Why is it any more ridiculous than a contract signing between two men? Wrestling contract signings are generally ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Beat him into such a deep state of unconsciousness that he voids his bowels. Or he thinks he'll scare him into wetting himself.

    ReplyDelete
  104. But you can see where, as far as WWE knows, people do care about Brie Bella. Her confrontation with Stephanie at Payback got a big reaction, her confrontation with Stephanie that led to Steph getting arrested got a big reaction, and the confrontation with Stephanie that set up the SS match got a big reaction. The live crowds have been showing WWE that people go want to see Brie vs. Steph. Or they just want to see anybody beat Steph up. Either way, it's not like their segments have been getting crickets.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Brie got her job back last week in exchange for dropping charges against Stephanie. And the reason she wanted her job back is because as long as she was gone, Stephanie was going to keep torturing Nikki without anyone putting her in check.

    ReplyDelete
  106. It's certainly the latter...people want to see Stephanie get hers comeuppance. She's a total heat magnet right now and is single-handedly saving these segments from the crickets. I think that Brie is gonna lose steam REALLY quickly, unless it's revealed that she's basically acting as proxy for a returning Bryan. And soon, too, because there's no way that they can drag this out until after RR, or whatever the new timeline for his return is.

    ReplyDelete
  107. I don't pay much attention to this feud, fair enough.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Steph-Brie isn't going to be a great match. It won't even be a great brawl. But it will have heat, because the story has given the feud heat. I can tell you why they're fighting and why each side doesn't like the other. It makes sense.
As opposed to, say, Jericho-Bray. I can tell you why Jericho is mad; because he got attacked by the Wyatts, who haven't let up. But what is Bray's motivation here?

    ReplyDelete
  109. I can definitely agree with that. Stephanie is doing fine, I just wish Brie had better material. As far as Bray, the character doesn't seem to have any motivation.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Did any of Swagger's tag team partners like him? Usually Swagger's tag teams were kept together by their managers rather than by any mutual purpose.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Your assessment of Damien Sandow's current direction is intriguing, and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

I'm getting a real CM Punk vibe from him. Especially on the B-shows.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Those Beat the Clock matches seem to add to it.

    ReplyDelete
  113. StePHONY as a Rhinestone Cowgirl/Honky Tonk Heartbreaker would make DA PUTAS DEL FUEGO as instant faces!

    ReplyDelete
  114. Who do you have in mind? With the possible exception of Ziggler and Cesaro, it seems that all of the over guys are doing something big at the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  115. He already had a worked pipe bomb.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Nearly brought you to tears, "We are Groot."

    ReplyDelete
  117. All Reigns has is the cool looking Superman Punch.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Yeah, they are very annoying.

    ReplyDelete
  119. And look how well, that turned out for him.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Still, it seems like it should be one of the last matches to happen.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Still, need to see it, worried about Batista though.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Those are the only two match I have faith that will good. Everything else to me, will either be mediocre or bad.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Vince found out what Post-Modernism is.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Wow, their shows usually have a bit more momentum between PPVs. This current cycle died really fast. It doesn't hurt that there's only three babyfaces they give a crap about.

I do have to say that I'm loving the Authority right now, anchoring the show with solid heel work and fun promos.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Don't, his performance is ****, at least. My wife (who lovingly tolerates all my geeky pursuits) said, "Damn, Bootista can act!" as the credits rolled.

    ReplyDelete
