Since you're doing all the summer '96 reviews, something I always wondered - obviously the planning and execution of the invasion angle was incredible, but did they have the actual nWo name picked in advance? Basically I've always wondered if they just grabbed that term from Hogan's in-ring promo after the turn and ran with it, or if that promo was specifically scripted because the t-shirts were printed up and ready to go.
Well Hogan originally said "New World Organization", so it wasn't really him. According to the Observer at the time, WCW was pushing for just calling the group "The Outsiders" in the most on-the-nose naming in quite some time, although that ended up just being Hall and Nash, obviously. So it appears to be a rare case of WCW actually picking up on the cultural zeitgeist of something and running with it without fucking it up.
Considering Bischoff saw them more as a "brand" than a stable, I'd say the nWo name was always the plan.
ReplyDeleteFucking ludicrous that the Season Pass for Batman Arkham Knight DLC costs $40 or you can get the game and Season Pass for $99.
ReplyDeleteBullshit pricing structures aside, have you been watching the new trailers? Excited?
ReplyDeleteI'm losing my mind for June 20? 23? I can't keep up with the date. But yes, I haven't been this excited for a game since Arkham City.
ReplyDeleteIf I wasn't so excited this DLC thing would be even more offensive to me but it's Arkham so I can't even pretend that I ain't biting the bullet.
I don't mind all DLC. I loved the Harley's Revenge DLC for Arkham City. It was reasonably priced and gave me a fully fleshed story that added to the game. And it wasn't announced 2 months before the game even came out. But $40? And buying the special edition saves you approximately no money at all.
I'm pissed about that but then I see the Catwoman and Robin and Nightwing trailers and I'm giddy again.
But seriously that's insane.
Hogan changed it to New World Order within the promo, actually.
ReplyDeleteI assumed that Hall or Nash got it from the Ministry song 'NWO' since the NWO theme song sounds a little similar to it, and it uses sampling, like the Ministry song. A lot of the catchphrases of the NWO, "too sweet" "4 life" etc. Hall and Nash got from rap songs that Yokozuna was listening to while they were in the WWE.
ReplyDeleteWatching the BatB promo, it seemed like Hogan was actually trying to get the name "New Blood" over. He said that three times, only saying "New World Order" once.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. Crazy price, there. But how cool is it gonna be to throw an enemy in the air as Robin, and have Batman slam him down?
ReplyDeleteI'm beginning to wonder if that 6 month delay wasn't to add Robin/Nightwing/Catwoman as(playable?) characters? Or at least more thoroughly integrate them into the story. Because back when it was coming up on the October release date I never got any strong inclination of those characters playing huge story roles.
ReplyDeleteBut recent trailers makes me think the delay may have been to add Robin and Nightwing as allies. If so? Well done Rocksteady and I am thankful they delayed it.
New Blood - glad that didn't pan out!
ReplyDeleteHe said "New Blood" 3 times, "Outsiders" 5 times, "New World Organization" 80 times, and "New World Order" once.
ReplyDeleteIt did...just took a few more years.
ReplyDeleteIn other news, the folks in New Orleans have decides that "Silverdome" does in fact sound better.
ReplyDeleteYes but I meant that Hollywood Hogan of the New Blood doesn't sound quite as nice as Hollywood Hogan of the New World Order.
ReplyDeleteHollywood Hogan of the New Blood Order.
ReplyDeleteCould be. And I'll gladly take a six month delay in exchange for Robin and Nightwing. God, I hope this game is as awesome as I want it to be.
ReplyDeleteIt's a shame there never was a situation where the NWO didn't run down for the lazy DQ finish. I hated how there was never any payoff.
ReplyDeleteNWO ran rough shot and it stayed that way.
Rocksteady cannot let me down! I seriously have total faith in them at this point. I was worried they would let me down with Arkham City because my expectations were impossibly high but they somehow exceeded even them.
ReplyDeleteBatman and Robin working together taking down baddies? Arkham Knight with military backing!? Batmobile?! All Batman's villains rising up on him at once?!
Literally the only thing this game is missing is a civilian populated world but at that point I'm just nitpicking.
Be honest. Are you doing the $40 DLC pack or are you gonna try and wait? I'll put on a brave face right now and say I'll wait to show those industry slimeballs this isn't how the business should be ran but I know I'm too weak and I'll end up getting it haha. Any other game and I'd tell them to stick it(brother) but it's Arkham.
Hogan as new blood...oh the irony. ;-)
ReplyDelete''What we're dealing with good and evil, right and wrong''
ReplyDeleteWhat a tune.
They teased a Hogan heel turn in 1995 and he wore gear that was very similar in look to what he ended up wearing in the NWO. Not as flashy but still the all black design.
ReplyDeleteMy dad was a hellfire and brimstone Pentecostal preacher who believed (and still believes) that the end of the world is coming soon. And he was always talking about the New World Order and how they secretly run things and are going to bring in the anti-Christ. I remember a tape he had of the first President Bush talking about the new world order in 1990, and I think Clinton mentioned it too during his Presidency. But anytime he talked about it, all I could think about was the wrestling stable.
ReplyDeleteBush Sr. talked about it with regards to the Gulf War.
ReplyDelete''What we're dealing with good and evil, right and wrong''
Hassan played the heel well, in fairness. ''This will be the mother of all battles.''
I don't know. I'm pretty disciplined when it comes to waiting for video games. To me, what can really make or break this game is the Arkham Knight himself. I know Rocksteady swears he's a whole new character, but I've read from literally nobody who believes that. The big reveal-assuming there is one- could be the key to the game.
ReplyDeleteSo, it's bullshit that they charge full price for it either way?
ReplyDeleteThe OJ phase where he wore all black and gave an interview talking about "you know how bad a dude with black gloves can be brutha". Believe he then ended that with the return of the red and yellow and burning the observer on air before WW3. May be melding some stuff together though
ReplyDeleteAlways wished they got the rights to the song.
ReplyDeleteI acknowledge your comment, move along.
ReplyDeleteI'm actually buying that he's an original character. I know I'm a sucker but hey.
ReplyDeleteHaving the million dollar man in the group sealed it for me. but they didn't really take advantage of it and he was gone in a few weeks. But having him in the JJ Dillion role would have worked out Imo.
ReplyDeleteIf you pay attention, Larry Zybsco says new world order a few times throughout June
ReplyDeleteMinistry made a great song out of the Bush soundbite. Now I need to go listen to that....
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't so much a teased heel turn as a "Hogan embraces the dark side to fight evil." Kind of like when Kane goes back to being the DEMONKANE to fight the heels, which happens roughly four times per year.
ReplyDeleteI always thought Bischoff's plan was interesting - take the focus off of WCW vs WWF by making it WCW vs nWo, and treat WWF like it's irrelevant. Unfortunately for him, WWF stumbled onto some great characters that resonated deeply with fans.
ReplyDeleteI like to imagine what WCW would have been like if Bischoff had total and complete creative control over everyone. I don't know if the end result would have been any different, but I think a lot of the unexplained nonsensical crap wouldn't have happened.
And then "New World Odor" about a million times after.
ReplyDeleteSo when did the nWo thing officially run off the rails? Starrcade 1997, or before that?
ReplyDeleteShould have ended at starrcade with sting squashing hogan.
ReplyDeleteNew Order featuring Hulk Hogan
ReplyDeleteFew weeks? He made it into the early spring of 97 iirc
ReplyDeleteDoes it really matter how long he was there. They still didn't do anything with him in the how ever many weeks/months.
ReplyDelete
