  1. I'm fascinated by the news of TNA signings. I can't imagine going in for a job interview and being told you are hired...while there is a GOING OUT OF BUSINESS sign on the front of the building

  2. Worst_in_the_WorldJune 24, 2015 at 9:19 AM

He really did. I mean you don't even have to push Barrett or Cesaro long term if you don't want to (which WWE obviously doesn't want to), but just use one of them to give Rollins some believable muscle. That beatdown with those scrubs looked fucking ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  3. 22 up front apparently, the rest in add ons. It is a lot, but we need quality this summer - in danger of falling behind (further). 50 million for a twenty year old would be ridiculous, but more than willing to take it.

What do make of the Ramos/Schweinsteiger rumours?

    ReplyDelete
  4. But that's the point: local wrestling. That's what needs to be rebuilt. Rebuilding the whole foundation of pro wrestling at the local level. That's much more valuable--crucial even--than someone coming along with a bunch of cash and trying to be the #2 national promotion.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Someone had an idea I read once suggesting the NBA start their season later in December, and have the finals end in late July, with the draft being first week in August maybe. It was interesting because the NBA had this schedule originally to avoid overlap with MLB, but now the start of their season conflicts with CFB and NFL and really no one pays attn. to the NBA until Christmas time, so shifting it would make sense. I really don't see the downside to doing this

    ReplyDelete
  6. as I said below, I think GFW and TNA merge by fall. GFW gets some lucrative foreign deals and TNA gets a new name and an attempt to wash the stink off. It will fail miserably. No coincidence the first GFW house show used a six sided ring.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Worst_in_the_WorldJune 24, 2015 at 9:20 AM

Just saying that Owens is great, he's being protected... and since the Authority is never ever ever going away, chances are he'll be the new Orton/Rollins soon enough.

Maybe he'll succeed in the role where they failed, or maybe WWE will put Roman in that role instead. But SOMEONE will be HHH/Steph's new protege/lackey soon enough, and Owens is obviously on that short list.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Both would be great signings. Ramos is a prick though. And again, some of the numbers I'm hearing are insane. 30-40 million + De Gea?! Can't be. Throw in a striker though, which is a certainty, and that would be a very good summer

  10. I think, if anything, that was a sign that the times had changed. Scott once wrote something about there always being a place in wrestling for an evil foreigner gimmick, but I'm starting to think that's not the case. Rusev never really made it past the midcard, and without Lana I think he's dead in the water.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I was not a fan of Tough Enough. Too many hosts/judges/teachers. The set with the ring ropes is super cheesy. That awful girl talking about her fiancee almost single handedly makes the show unwatchable.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I don't think people will ever get interested in local wrestling on any significant level ever again.

    ReplyDelete
  13. TNA and ROH should do a Supercard a few times each year on PPV with 4 matches from each promotion and air it on PPV.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Joey Jo-Jo Junior ShabbadooJune 24, 2015 at 9:22 AM

And they had an valid storyline reason to change things up! Kane and J&J were sick of Rollins and HHH/Steph are actively trying to screw him, so why wouldn't he recruit some new muscle in the form of Barrett, Cesaro, etc.? It would have been far more believable than what we got.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Yes planning for the future is prudent, and they are actively trying guys out as the next Cena so they can move Cena into that Bruno roll. Rollins, Ambrose and Reigns are all trying to be the next "guy". Owens maybe too. But until they find him, Cena is selling merch and Cena will keep winning feuds.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I would guess ol' carny JJ had a spare TNA ring at his house that he didn't tell anyone about.

What TV deal could they get? GFW has zero name recognition, and TNA has the aura of failing on two channels.

They're not actual bears though, they're human fucking beings. And if drawing a cartoon of a religious figure is enough to "incite" them to murder then it's not on anyone else in terms of what happened.

Maybe we shouldn't look at the Muslim world as animals who can't help what they're doing.

    ReplyDelete
  20. A few years ago when they had their lockout that pushed the start of the season to Christmas day gave them a big shot of publicity. They already own Christmas as far as sporting events go: make Christmas Day the official start of the NBA season and par down the schedule from 82 games to 58 (each team plays the other twice, once at home and once on the road), run the playoffs from May to early July, draft at the end of August just before the NFL season kicks off, and viola.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Cena vs Orton,one more timeJune 24, 2015 at 9:26 AM

The only people who said we were in for him were random journalists from South America that I've never heard of. If we wanted him, we'd have him. Simple.

    ReplyDelete
  22. TNA gets away from the name. They can sell the fact that Jarrett is in charge now to a TV station (maybe even salvage the deal with Destination America since they have that "wrestling" night thing) and GFW gets some lucrative foreign deals to pump cash flow while they buik

    ReplyDelete
  23. As a fan that would be awesome, but split-promotion supercards never work out for the promotions actually running the card. Too many cooks in the proverbial kitchen.

    ReplyDelete
  24. The list of players we've been linked to this summer has passed the 50 mark already, it's nuts

    ReplyDelete
  25. I didn't mean it like that. But when tensions are already high, racist caricatures and such just stoke the flames.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Couldn't hurt to try, I guess. TNA is a really stupid name for a promotion.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The cynic in me says they're both just looking for better contracts.

    ReplyDelete
  28. 24 lost games of revenue will never happen. Arenas are already mostly full (or atleast sold). You can't make up that kind of revenue, especially since they just signed a new 10 year TV deal.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Cena vs Orton,one more timeJune 24, 2015 at 9:28 AM

I wouldn't be surprised if Schweinstiger signed a new deal with Bayern, as he is a Bavarian through and through (like Muller), but I also wouldn't be surprised if he DID sign with us since he's not ideal for Pep's system.

    ReplyDelete
  30. At this point we're going to have to set up a LOLWWE page just in the interest of fairness.

    ReplyDelete
  31. How does shifting the dates of the season impact them in a negative way though?

    ReplyDelete
  32. ROH already does that with NJPW. Why would they stain themselves by associating with TNA?

    ReplyDelete
  33. LOL HHH really said the equivalent of "let it play out and see where it goes?"

    ReplyDelete
  34. A few months of unemployment checks aren't so bad.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Has attendance improved that much in the last two years? I was under the impression that the bottom half of the league was struggling to sell tickets.

    ReplyDelete
  36. United's team right now is such an odd mix. I really can't work out what they're going for.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Worst_in_the_WorldJune 24, 2015 at 9:29 AM

Exactly. HHH gives Rollins the big boring speech about always needing a Plan B.... and then Rollins just lucks out that his Plan A of shitty old wrestlers stick with him. How bad ass of an ending would it have been if Barrett and Cesaro came out and jumped Brock with him? Then you've elevated those guys and given Brock a credible threat.

Hell, you could even then have changed the Battleground main event to Rollins/Cesaro/Barrett vs Team Brock (maybe he recruits Ambrose and I dunno, Neville) for a six-man on the B-show, and then save Brock vs Rollins for Summerslam. Give a load of guys the rub of being in a Brock match.

  40. Shortening the season would be great, but I think that's unrealistic to expect. However, why can't they shift the start to Christmas and have the season run through July? That would make total sense

    ReplyDelete
  41. Even Detroit has 13 to 14 k paid every night. 7k may shows up, but paid is well over 10k at every single arena, with half of the teams selling out night after night.

Well, they would lose several weeks of games during Sweeps. Maybe the NFL gets larger numbers during that period, but with marquee match-up and big names the NBA games can do quite well even when no one supposedly cares.

  53. Oh so a Paris Hilton dog. I have seen those.

    ReplyDelete
  54. But you're talking WWE level product. Look at how MMA has seen a boom nationwide, yet most of your local level MMA has zero television support. MMA in general and UFC in particular have become so strong that the popularity for it has trickled downward, and it exists on a revenue stream of PPV, live events & merchandising.

Wrestling is what it is now because there used to be a status quo, which got shaken up in the 90's, and they subsequently embraced that style as the new status quo, and have held onto it longer than the previous status quo that everyone was bored with. And every new group that comes along wants to emulate that status quo.

Wrestling really needs to try going back to its roots. Reenergize it from the bottom up, not the top down. Essentially a return to the territories, only this time existing as parts of a larger web, connected by technology and social media.

I think I'm pretty much calling for a new version of the NWA.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I think wrestling has one thing going against it though. People who like boxing and MMA are willing to go see no names just to see a fight. Wrestling fans don't tend to go to a wrestling card without knowing some of the names. Even non-fans are similar. A non-fan might go to a MMA card at the local VFW hall just to see some ass-kicking, but they won't do that with wrestling. It's the nature of scripted vs. non-scripted. Ultimately non one wants to watch a scripted show where they have no context (even if it's just a faded Greg Valentine eeking out a few bucks) whereas anyone can watch a couple guys kick each other's asses.

Yup! It was an amazing copout. You can't judge us, because the stories never end! Except that's not how anything works.

If episodes 1-5 of a series fucking suck and the characters all look like dopes and nothing fun is happening, guess what? People will stop watching. I don't know if they realize that their audience isn't obligated to watch/pay for their product no matter how bad it is.

And hell, if their current ratings and subscription numbers don't tell them that, then nothing will.

    ReplyDelete
  83. All of these JJ tweets are much better if you assume he is talking about taking shits.

    ReplyDelete
  84. So Dubba J may have a big deal in the works, which may have fallen through, which may have been revived, which may have been morphed into some other deal?

    ReplyDelete
  85. It doesn't. It stunts then creatively, it shackles them financially and makes them have to explain every decision they make to multiple parties and it has to be to those parties' satisfaction. The only legit upside was the influx of cash around the time of the IPO, which is great, but they didn't NEED it.

Got to the window, they hand me the bag, look down and can see there's yellow in the potato. OK.

Dig through and see there's no butter/sour cream that come with all potatoes. Ask the guy if it's in there. He says he's pretty sure. I dig around, and go all Dean Ambrose and get butter in my eyes, 123, Sister Abigail say "Nope" and so he gets me some.

Get home, unpack and find out I was right about needing the butter/sour cream. Then open the potato container and it's the cheese sauce instead of the shredded cheese I clearly ordered. No receipt in the bag to confirm what they heard.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Except how lucrative are those deals? Their deal in Australia is about to expire. I doubt the money even adds up into the millions. $10,000 here, $50,000 there. And it's money that TNA either already got upfront, or will get contingent upon delivery of product, meaning it comes after they tape the shows. It's not a steady revenue stream and therefore not really beneficial to anyone.

I'm assuming they'll come up in some other episode for some reason, but how do you talk about Watergate and not talk about them?

  112. The "civilized world" created the situation where these zealot ideas have festered. Western governments, with their political power plays in the Middle East and such, created situations where they backed certain regimes with their money and weapons and caused civil wars. This allowed that religious fanaticism to arise.

And to say "phony god" is ignorant. Whether you believe in the faith or God or not, it's reductive and doesn't help the situation at all. Do I believe that Arabs and Muslims are being manipulated by power-hungry Imams and politicians through Islam? Absolutely. But there are good Muslims out there who believe in that "phony god", too.

  136. They shot themselves in the foot with how they brought him back. But Brock's the one guy who can be rehabilitated, so I'm not going out on a limb to say he's ruined yet.

That did seem like a deliberate "screw those guys!" deal. Not sure why, though, it would be like talking about the British Invasion of the '60s and leaving out the Rolling Stones.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Being mad at someone wanting $15 is ridiculous. That is not a good wage.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Well, not every nation can claim ownership of such gourmet cuts as "pink slime"

    ReplyDelete
  140. It was.

    ReplyDelete
  141. 1.5 — guitars aren't cheap when you're broke.

    ReplyDelete
  142. Way more than the dimes he drew.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Trying to watch an interview with Greg Graffin but the dudes in my trailer won't shut up.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Trying to poke the dozing bear that is the BoD today.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Opposite. Vince is booking as if he's Nitro competing with WWF.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Yeah what is that around 30k assuming a 40 hour week? That's pretty awful.

    ReplyDelete
  147. That's what kills me, I'm not sure why instead of seeking more for ourselves, we just convince ourselves that everyone else is overpaid.

    ReplyDelete
  148. the TV part is the difference...but...Bruno as absolutely booked to look superior and it didn't do any long term damage to Savage, Piper, or any of the guy during Backlund's reign

    ReplyDelete
  149. Custom orders are fine, just do them inside.

The drive through people are judged on one thing and one thing only. How fast they can get car through. It doesn't matter if they fuck it up, as soon as the bag is handed to you, their job is done.

    ReplyDelete
  150. This. That's why I never use drive-thrus.

    ReplyDelete
  151. Brock going after the guy that 'stole' his championship from him (and who has the entire Authority backing him) isn't a proper babyface story for Lesnar to be involved in?

    ReplyDelete
  152. Does GFW have champions yet?

    ReplyDelete
  153. well Woodward has pissed some people off in the past years. He kinda went off the rails and became a hack. Belushi's friends and family still want to kill him for "Wired" and there has been other stuff that has been shady and not exactly high brow

    ReplyDelete
  154. Yea but he totally hast to own a big storage space just filled with them right? Before selling to Panda he probably put in an order for like 8 thousand of them saying ..charge this to the company...NEXT week

    ReplyDelete
  155. Exactly--which is why the GFW & LU business model is so risky. You need weeks of shows just to introduce your characters and get people to care.

It's also why WWE's current level of success doesn't trickle downward. You can't replicate complicated characters & detailed storylines at an indy spot show with no TV support.

Wrestling needs to get back to the basics: people wanting to see two guys fight, with one being a good guy to cheer for, and a bad guy to boo. If WWE went back to a more basic approach it could set the stage for it catching on again at the local level. But yeah--probably never going to happen.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Did you watch the ep?

    ReplyDelete
  157. It would be great if everyone could make $12-15 minimum wage, but business owners are douches and would recoup that by passing on the costs to customers (that or hire fewer people). So costs go up, fewer have jobs, and then business suffers because fewer people go to buy the $7 Big Mac when fast food places are already hemorrhaging.

    ReplyDelete
  158. The card was an impromptu 'PPV' in Corpus Christi. That's enough to suggest this sales story is BS. Option A is the clear favorite.

    ReplyDelete
  159. Another Watergate question that's never been clear to me that wasn't really answered in the ep I watched:

Did Nixon authorize the breakdown, or simply the coverup?

    ReplyDelete
  160. But business owners are job creators! They need to run their affairs unfettered to maximize profit which will trickle down to even the lowest-paid employees!

That is, until the business owner decides to pick up and re-locate to a Third World country where they can lock employees in the factories and pay them pennies per hour!

    ReplyDelete
  161. RE: Jarrett making premature announcementulations:

Anyone remember years and years ago when when posted some picture of... an airfield? Or an airplane or somesuch as a teaser, and then... nothing?

    ReplyDelete
  162. OUTRAGE. too much FoxNews. too many internet sites to stoke our outrage about the alleged folks scamming the system. You see the minute few scamming the system so often on Facebook, Twitter, the news, etc. that we get jaded. Unions are scum. Government employees are crooks. Poor people are lazy and living off our "hard work" (as we spend our work day posting on BOD, atleast I'm sick). It's sad what has happened. We want to pull others down to make ourselves feel better instead of raise everyone up

    ReplyDelete
  163. Speaking of Third World, it looks like we're going to get the TPP after all.

Because free trade agreements have done so much for America lately.

  164. Worst_in_the_WorldJune 24, 2015 at 9:54 AM

How is "phony God" ignorant? I'd say the same about Christianity too. If anything I think it's reductive to keep indulging everyone's ridiculous fantasy worlds, especially when it's being used as justification to kill people over cartoons.

And yes, I'm not going to pretend the Western World is faultless or even close--- our foreign politics have been damaging as fuck and we've installed puppet regimes etc etc. Agreed. But we didn't create religious fanatacism in the Mideast, and it's far from a "poor people are driven to this way of life" type of problem. The Muslim extremism goes far beyond that.

But back to the cartoonist, my point is that the "but" in those type of statements is pure victim blaming. And as someone who's pretty liberal, it always irks me (not saying whether you are liberal or conservative or neither, who knows) that the same Liberals who would throw a shit fit over victim-blaming a rape victim for wearing a short skirt and getting blackout drunk at a frat party immediately go to victim-blaming in this case. To me it's the same fucking thing. The frat guys aren't animals with no sense of right and wrong. And neither are the Muslim terrorists who get murderously mad over someone making fun of their phony God.

The victims were the victims and didn't come even close to doing anything to deserve what they got. And if the thought becomes "Well, maybe they shouldn't have drawn those cartoons" becomes the default, then the murderers have moved the world into the direction they wanted.

    ReplyDelete
  165. Is that even a thing right now with ratings. If Brock was hyped for hour 3 and those ratings tanked that would be something but no one even showed up to see what was going to happen on the show. which is weird since NBA and NHL are over..but the USA women did get highest ratings of the night so maybe everyone was watching Team USA instead

    ReplyDelete
  166. Joey Jo-Jo Junior ShabbadooJune 24, 2015 at 9:55 AM

Yeah, although I will admit to not giving it my full attention since they really didn't cover anything new. But by the end I was like "wait, what about Woodward and Bernstein?" Seemed like a glaring omission.

  167. Cena vs Orton,one more timeJune 24, 2015 at 9:55 AM

Free trade agreements have lifted millions of people out of poverty.

    ReplyDelete
  168. I think this explains it:

    ReplyDelete
  169. It's the price you pay when the news media has to sensationalize everything to stay relevant. Sensationalism on the news begets sensationalism on social media, and everyone stays pissed off and angry all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  170. I do to some degree blame people for not making more. Money is really easy to get. I made twice what someone making $12 an hour will make today before I woke up this morning and it isn't like I have some special talent or whatever. I just made it a goal and worked towards it.

    ReplyDelete
  171. probably would but the more money workers make, the more they spend. Unlike hedge fund managers, the working class put every dime they make right back into the economy. It's why Keynesian economics really does work a hell of a lot better than trickle down.

    ReplyDelete
  172. Remember when Jeff hit Hogan with a guitar and then Hogan doesn't come back to TNA for what...5 years?

    ReplyDelete
  173. You don't want to go there with me: I live in an area that got fist-fucked by NAFTA, dude. I can show you two dozen overgrown lots where mills used to gainfully employ people until NAFTA opened the door for those jobs to move to Mexico. Free trade deals only work if you can enforce the terms, and the U.S. has proven unable or unwilling to do that.

    ReplyDelete
  174. I haven't used a drive thru since getting the new car.

I know about the drive thru evaluations is based on speed, but custom order in general are a bad idea for these places because they really aren't that responsible for getting it right. Okay, they lose a few packets of sauce, a whole burger. Big deal. Sell 1 large drink, and all of their profit margins are back.

    ReplyDelete
  175. Remember when you were in the Beatles?

    That was awesome

    ReplyDelete
  176. You mean the live shows, like the UK tour? Sure, there's money to be made there, but we're talking a good week or two out of the year. It's not enough to sustain a company domestically for the remainder of the year.

    ReplyDelete
  177. On one hand information, when used properly and correct information is always a good thing. On the other hand I think there was something to be said when we all had a shared experience of reading the morning paper and getting our news in 30 minute increments from Cronkite, Brokaw, Jennings, and Rather. We lack shared experiences now and it divides us further and further into Red and blue, haves and have nots, black and white, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  178. Someone take the Twitters away from Jeff Jarrett.

    ReplyDelete
  179. I do love me those docs those than Hanks has been putting out. The 60;s was great, 70's has been great (with the exception of what we're talking about).

Wonder if they'll keep it going and do an 80's one.

    ReplyDelete
  180. It's almost impossible to 'pop' a rating now, but given the amount they pay Brock what are they hoping for in return?

    ReplyDelete
  181. I get what you're saying and truly respect you for your opinion. You're right...murder is wrong. Completely. My perspective is more that the cartoons were insipid and in France, with the burgeoning Muslim population and racial tensions, to publish them was irresponsible.

    ReplyDelete
  182. Worst_in_the_WorldJune 24, 2015 at 10:00 AM

Obviously not ruined, not even close. But they didn't bring him back in a way that would cause the fanbase to get more excited.

They brought him back as an apologizing HHH/Steph semi-lackey. It's not the type of story that will make anyone care about WWE any more than they already did or didn't.

    ReplyDelete
  183. Also incredibly telling for GFW is this tweet we are all talking about ...18 retweets...I should not be able to get more retweets on a good day for a joke than a wrestling promotion teasing big news.

    ReplyDelete
  184. On the other hand, you and I are subsidizing garbage wages through Medicaid, food stamps and the like. Cutting food stamps and Medicaid to the worst off ends up in tax writeoffs from hospitals, and the average person would never accept food aid to kids being cut.

    ReplyDelete
  185. Based on what I have gathered in today's blog comments. Jeff Jarrett has been tweeting regarding him breaking into the Watergate hotel stealing reports about obesity being caused by fast food workers not getting drive thru orders right.

    ReplyDelete
  186. I wish I knew who said this yesterday, because it was a fucking great point (maybe Parallax or Bayless): people don't watch the news to get informed anymore, they watch the news to get reaffirmed.

    ReplyDelete
  187. certainly not. My point is that neither GFW or TNA survive without each other. Merging and taking the strengths of each (basically no Dixie and a different name plus some talent and some connections) gives them a tiny chance of making it.

    ReplyDelete
  188. That about covers it.

    ReplyDelete
  189. Remember everyone thought you were dead? That was a joke, right?

    ReplyDelete
  190. Also someone had a hilarious tweet about what the big deal is and why there are some hang ups in getting it done: "Jeff stands firmly on his $5 bid. Dixie wants $8 so she can order a salad appetizer for her lunch today."

    ReplyDelete
  191. I'll get a house right next door. We can be neighbors and drink craft brews while watching dancing ladies every day!

    ReplyDelete
  192. I can't imagine a major TV, sponsorship or venue deal having such dramatic turns. They either happen or they don't. Probably negotiations to sign Rey Mysterio for the tapings or something dumb like that.

    ReplyDelete
  193. TPP is nothing but patent and copyright protection. The comparative pennies we'll pay out to these developing countries is apparently less important than our drugmakers being able to sue other countries' health systems.

    ReplyDelete
  194. exactly. Free trade sorta works with Europe, Canada, Australia, etc. But when you start dealing with low wage, low regulation countries and CEOs that don't give a fuck about Americans, then it falls apart very quickly. I certaily didn't vote for him, but I often wonder what might have been if we gave Perot a shot.

    ReplyDelete
  195. Only the cover-up IIRC.

He may or may not have hinted to his followers to do the break-in (as in, he casually mentions is, and somebody takes it under serious advisement), but he definitely covered it up.

Another reason why the cover-up is worse than the lie.

    ReplyDelete
  196. Yea, however the crowd that paid to show up to that show was super into him so that is at least something and a point to rehabilitate him from.
