Bret Hart Interview

Hey Scott - have you had the chance to digest this yet?  Some pretty stiff blows landed by the Hitman here when it comes to Joe and Bryan...
Yeah, I don't know what his beef with Joe is.  Shit happens, unfortunately.  Even more sad is Tyson Kidd being out for the next 14 months and frankly he'll probably be done at the level he was at before.

Heyman, Lesnar and Axel (I think) are in the back after a segment.

    Heyman: "Ladies and gentlemen...."

Lesnar grabs the mic and rants about whoever it was they were fighting (probably Punk.)

    Lesnar: "Paul, say something stupid!"

  2. Adam "Colorado" CurryJune 23, 2015 at 10:58 PM

    B. Definitely B. I don't even remember him kicking Cena's hat.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Wasn't Suplex City just some thing he said in a match? That got pretty big

    ReplyDelete
  4. He makes some good points, but the harsh remarks about Daniel Bryan's career being over and calling Joe reckless are a bit too much. He is right about poorly calling spots. It's a problem that creeps up at least once per PPV where two or more people can be heard quite clearly having a conversation about what to do next. Happens a lot with Cena matches against less experienced guys (the Rusev matches come to mind), the IC Title Chamber match was nothing but spot screaming, and last week at MITB, Paige and Nikki were pretty darn loud about it, too.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Adam "Colorado" CurryJune 23, 2015 at 11:03 PM

And Cole pretty much killed it last night.

    ReplyDelete
  6. His voice cracking while screaming LETS DO THIIIIIIIS?!?! Not even Brock's own voice can contain the Beast

But seriously, the hat. FUCK THAT STUPID FRUITY PEBBLE HAT. That would make Bret shed a tear of pride.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I think the rings are probably mic'd up more than before because Dunn wants the sound to echo everywhere (I remember being at Summerslam 13 and hearing the fire from Kane/Bray from up in the nosebleeds) but yeah, the spot calling is getting really sloppy, Cena isn't even hiding it now. And for fucks sake Nikki, if Paige is going through the trouble of yelling out spots, you can at least not botch and make you both look equally bad.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I have no problem with Hart critizing Joe. Hart likely didn't watch any of Joe's indie work and only knows him as the guy who hurt Tyson Kidd, one of Hart's own. Hart's always been over protective of his family.

I don't really understand the need to analyze everything Hart says.

    ReplyDelete
  9. He brings it on himself with all those fucking tears in his eyes

    ReplyDelete
  10. As long as the Brock libs aren't on the mic

"This is a real feeling that you're feeling because I can feel it! I'm the reason you're feeling the way you're feeling right now, John!"

    ReplyDelete
  11. I wonder if he ever called Owen reckless for breaking Austin's neck?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Well read a paragraph below and he says he told Owen he was reckless for doing it.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Is interesting how he says WWE just wanted to do the big swerve of Sting losing since we all assumed he was going to win and how Bryan would have just done the same storyline again. May not agree totally but still respect him, all that experience counts.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I didn't have a problem with what he said about Joe...It's a move that some opponents need to be taught how to take properly and that needed to be communicated ahead of time. I think if that communication was done it would have been fine. It's not a dangerous move but it could be if one or two things go wrong like any of those suplexy/brainbustery type moves.

And I felt that way about Bryan a year ago. I was surprised he came back to begin with. I hope he comes back again but he has to realize he can't do the shit that he did 2-3 years ago. Maybe he returns and brings back a grounded-style with him that can get over. That might be the best thing for the business.

He was spot on about the Roman Reigns booking...

    ReplyDelete
  15. On a lighter note, Bret Hart has a tears in his eyes tonight as he has a grandson for the first time.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Adam "Colorado" CurryJune 23, 2015 at 11:39 PM

Henry should have had the sense to stick to the script on his own. It's not like he's a rookie, and staying in the pod would have made sense kayfabe-wise.

I still want to know what the fuck Sheamus was doing. Was that part of the plan all along and HE stuck to the script and everything else was already fucked? Or was he trying to improvise too? Or had everything just gone to shit? The commentators didn't seem to know what was going on, but with those idiots that's not an indication of anything.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Adam "Colorado" CurryJune 23, 2015 at 11:44 PM

And he's already bitching about HBKs kid not putting him over and how Austin's kid came up with tears his in eyes... Or something, I should just leave the Bret jokes to the pros.

    ReplyDelete
  18. HowmuchdoesthisguyweighJune 23, 2015 at 11:53 PM

For sheamus it certainly was the plan and quality heel work. Problem was the face/heel dynamic wasn't good and Henry coming in early sent them for a loop. Announcers did a horrific job detailing what sheamus had done. That match was just terrible. Faces didn't know who they should go at it with. So odd.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Bah.

    "Suplex city, bitch."

    Nothing tops this.

    NOTHING.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Adam "Colorado" CurryJune 23, 2015 at 11:56 PM

I wouldn't call that reckless. More like an honest mistake, a miscommunication that was his fault. Bret's nephew Teddy, he was reckless.

    ReplyDelete
  21. That was the plan for him to jam the pod with the cross; it's just that everything was such a clusterfuck the announcers didn't know or forgot about it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yup. Just something he said, presumably off the cuff, to RR during their WM match.

    ReplyDelete
  23. That was 1998 WCW levels of bad, that match.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Adam "Colorado" CurryJune 24, 2015 at 12:06 AM

" and frankly he'll probably be done at the level he was at before."

What level was that? A jobber that only was kept around because he's married to a Hart? Don't get me wrong, being the opening guy that gets to get the crowd hot while tagging with Cesaro and stare at his cute wife's ass during her matches is a damn fine way to make a living, but he's not Bryan, a guy who could have been a permanent main eventer and now never will be because Vince rightfully can't trust him to stay healthy.

No disrespect towards Tyson, I feel for the guy and felt he was much more talented then his booking showed. But he gets to bang Nattie and at worst will get a job as an NXT trainer, or he can always get a real job. He'll be alright. It's not like he was getting a main event run at any point in the future.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Adam "Colorado" CurryJune 24, 2015 at 12:09 AM

That's what I figured. I wonder if maybe Dolph did the wrong thing there. It wasn't something your usual kid mark would notice, but it looked really business exposing to me. Ryback was the smart one, he didn't try to take over, he just did his best to roll with it.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Adam "Colorado" CurryJune 24, 2015 at 12:10 AM

My guess is that they didn't know, and you can't blame that on anyone in the ring.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I loved it at mania but I've seen people work it into memes way too much online over the past 6 months and it's feeling played out. Hat kick for me.

    ReplyDelete
  28. ...lying in a puddle of piss vomit and blood.

    ReplyDelete
  29. See, I have seen no memes at all. It still works for me. And, no one chants "Kick that hat!" during his matches.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I find it hard to believe that it was the first time Kidd has ever taken a muscle-buster over his long career. That said, I'm not sure the fault is on Joe's end either, as he's delivered that move thousands of times with no impact to his opponent. It was just one of those fluke injuries that sometimes happens in wrestling.

Bret's always been strict about injuries in wrestling, and prided himself for years about always being a 'safe' worker within the ring. In fairness, Bret also openly criticized Owen for breaking Austin's neck as well, so it's not like he was just closing ranks to protect a family member in Kidd.

So, so, SO much of what Bret says about the modern wrestling business is 100% accurate and what's maybe a bit scary is that so much of it is just plain common sense. It's say that "creative" and the TV mindset has taken over the company so much that even with experienced guys like Arn or Malenko acting as agents, you still see such a lack of in-ring creativity.

    ReplyDelete
  31. "Party's over, grandpa!"

    ReplyDelete
  32. It depends--was this scripted or a Brock-lib? http://dailywrestlingnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/Lesnar-Cena-SummerSlam-gifs-001_001.gif

    ReplyDelete
  33. I say Suplex City. Just because it became an overused meme doesn't take away from the initial awesomeness.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I see "I don't like gays. Write that down in your little notebook. I don't like gays." didn't make it.

    ReplyDelete
  35. "I'm gonna drink a Coors Light because Bud Light won't pay me nuffin."

    ReplyDelete
  36. The important thing is that he's banging Nattie so he's a made man

    ReplyDelete
  37. Adam "Colorado" CurryJune 24, 2015 at 1:08 AM

I saw the pic of him with her in pre-op. If I was him I wouldn't be worried.

    ReplyDelete
  38. "Paul, say something stupid" was pretty great.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I don't think he was that hard on Joe, considering he was equally hard on his brother- he just said he did the move too recklessly. He even said he's a "good guy who was just trying too hard that day".

    ReplyDelete
  40. nothing outrageous here. He wasn't hard on Joe, just called the move a bit negligent, just like Owen with Austin. Only quibbles I have is I disagree with his take on smaller guys. On one hand he's touting Rollins as the future, then he says the days of Punk and Bryan are over and it is back to super heavies? Seems a little off. Plus with Zayn, Finn, Ambrose, etc., I don't see any retreat from accepting that the days of everyone being 280 and ripped or tall and fat are over. The other quibble would be calling spots. He is 100% right that some guys (looking at you Cena) are just awful for calling spots....but....Bret had a couple matches where he was pretty bad at it too.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I love that one of the 1st things he says about Bryan is the loss of millions of dollars.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Lesnar 3:16: I jusAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Was that before or after he said he was gonna get on top of his wife?

    ReplyDelete
  44. I've noticed that there's often confusing inconsistencies among the company, wrestlers (like Bret), and even us fans about who's considered a big guy and who isn't.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Anything that pisses off Hogan is a good thing.

    ReplyDelete
  46. E) Brock humors himself by letting Shane Carwin punch him 600 straight times, to the point where both of his eyes swell halfway shut, and then chokes him out anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  47. You see a lot of wrestlers – who aren’t good professionals – talking and
calling spots in the ring. They’re oblivious to the fact that all the
fans can see them calling a high spot to the guy. ....Hi Cena!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Here's an interesting little sidecar: What happens if Bret gets what he really wanted all along, Triple H's position in the company?

    ReplyDelete
  49. He's on record on at least one WWE DVD saying Owen was a **** for not visiting Austin in hospital and apologizing.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Kidd was pretty fucking good with Cesaro, and his heel work in NXT last year was top-notch.

He was in the sweetspot of having indy cred, being the only decent Hart wrestler still working, being a pretty damn good worker on his own merit and doing some hilarious goofy heel stuff.

So yeah, I don't know why you're of the opinion that we should only give a fuck about main-event guys. Like...he put in good work and entertained us and he was giving actual star Cesaro a great opportunity to strut his stuff. No, he'd never be world champ, but that's not the only way to matter in wrestling.

Wanted all along? He left. Was he assuming he would just be back after his 3 yr WCW contract?

    ReplyDelete
  61. I love it whenever Bret Hart talks about Goldberg. He will go on for minutes talking about how unprofessional he was. How that kick costed him millions of dollars. He will complain nonstop and seem like he wants to assault Goldberg. But then he will say, he isn't mad at him, which doesn't seem quite true. He does this every single interview. Bret Hart must be the world's worst dinner guest.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Extant1979 - Extreme SuperstarJune 24, 2015 at 6:03 AM

The original 20-year deal Bret signed would have made him one of Vince's lieutenants, much like what Triple H was before becoming COO.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Eh, the way the WWE's Fandangoed the shit out of it since has ruined it. Like, just let it live. Let it be.

    ReplyDelete
  64. And Lesnar got lost in his own head mid-promo there, too.

"IS THAT THE BEST... OF THE BEST... OF THE BEST OF THE BEST OF THE BEST IN THE WORLD? (Silence) I AM THE BEST! AND THE BEAST! Paul... Say something stupid."

    ReplyDelete
  65. What about Michael cole saying it?

    ReplyDelete
  66. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogJune 24, 2015 at 6:22 AM

Gotcha. I can see why that would have been such a letdown

    ReplyDelete
  67. Once you get past the way he speaks about himself fondly, he makes a couple of good points. But it seems like every sentence in that interview he said could've incorporated "tears in his eyes".

    ReplyDelete
  68. Everybody tends to jump on Bret these days for patting himself on the back too much, but I thought this interview was pretty good. It's definitely surprising to hear him speak so definitively on Bryan's injuries, but then again I think a lot of people feel the same way right now.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Was "suplex city" a Brock ad-lib? I have to believe someone wrote that for him. Do you think Brock used to watch Wrestling Challenge in the 80s to know that Gorilla Monsoon used to say "Suplex city coming up"? And especially now the way they're playing it up.
I'm guessing that was fed to him by someone, either Heyman or HHH.

    ReplyDelete
  70. "...and Daniel Bryan approached me in the hotel afterwards with tears in his eyes as I told him his career was over."

    ReplyDelete
  71. I think some people aren't willing to say that much because of how guys like Angle and Edge came back from neck injuries. Bryan's injury, with the rumored loss of strength in his arm, seemed more about nerve damage, which is more difficult to come back from.

Couple that with his intense style, and I can see the fed paying him not to wrestle if only to protect themselves from any future liability.

    ReplyDelete
  72. YOU try telling Brock to throw in a corporate catch-phrase mid-match.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Charismatic eNegro Jef VinsonJune 24, 2015 at 7:40 AM

    Maybe because

a.) Most of his opponents don't wear hats, or
b.) The hats are too scared to go out there.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Charismatic eNegro Jef VinsonJune 24, 2015 at 7:41 AM

"FUCK YO COUCH, NIGGA!!! FUCK YO COUCH!!!"

    ReplyDelete
  75. I think some people dissect everything Bret Hart says to find a reason to criticize him. Nothing he said here was out of line or disrespectful.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Right. He never says, "when I got severely concussed" or "when I suffered my career-ending injury," it's always "when Bill Goldberg kicked me in the head." Like you said, for a guy that claims he's made peace with it and isn't carrying a grudge, he makes it a point to throw Goldberg under that bus every single time.

    ReplyDelete
  77. yeah, the nerve damage rumors strike me as more like what put Paul Orndorff on the shelf permanently than a neck injury like Angle or Edge

    ReplyDelete
  78. Someone needs to collate these moments into video form.

    ReplyDelete
  79. It was reckless, that piledriver was executed like that regularly. In most cases the guy falls forward to his knees to shield the impact, he dropped back and could have killed him. I'm pretty positive Austin wasn't expecting that and that's more than a simple miscommunication.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I manage to successfully block out the announce team, including Cole, roughly 90% of the time. I suggest you do the same.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Doesn't seem like Bret has a problem with Joe at all. What he said was the truth. He was right about Owen as well. The only one he still seems to have a beef with is Goldberg.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Plus it's making everyone money now, too.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I have absolutely no problem with this interview. Say what you will about Bret's view of himself, but if you think every main-eventer in history HASN'T had an inflated view of themselves at some point in time (with the possible, POSSIBLE exception of Cena), you're kidding yourself.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Sounds like maybe the Kidd/Joe match was thrown together quickly and they went to the ring unprepared?

I don't know if many people know this, because he rarely talks about it, but Bret never hurt anyone in his entire career, so I can see him looking down on someone who did.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Welcome to the world, dude.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I don't know about the others but Edge's first warning sign was losing strength in his arm. Although I think he mentioned that as being a warning sign for his retirement injury too.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I had a friend in high school who just constantly talked about how great he was, how expensive his watch was, how he was the best player on the hockey team, and he had to be right no matter what we were talking about and would go on and on and on until he either proved himself right or you just gave it to shut him up. I imagine dinner with Bret would be a lot of that.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I'm sure he meant respect. Bret wasn't hungry for money, he was hungry for respect.

    ReplyDelete
  89. That's going to be one all-time classic grandchild.

    ReplyDelete
  90. He wasn't. Austin was expecting a regular Tombstone, Owen said he liked to drop to his ass. Austin said he wasn't taking that, Owen said no that's how he does it. Austin thought Owen was kidding around and was expecting a regular Tombstone. That's why he was so pissed off about it.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I would bet 95% of the creative team didn't watch Wrestling Challenge in the 80's to know "Suplex City coming up"..

    ReplyDelete
  92. I'm sure Lawler was marking out huge to see a baseball hat finally get what was coming to it.

    ReplyDelete
  93. They should have used Brock kicking Cena's hat to set up Brock vs the hat that ruined Lawler's angle with Warrior.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Hands down the best ad-lib is "Suplex City, bitch!" Even the monkeys at WWE have managed to turn that into a marketing bonanza with T-shirts, and fans have gotten it over as a chant (which Heyman encourages).

    ReplyDelete
  95. So who the heck came up with it? Is it just a coincidence that Brock co-opted one of Gorilla's go-to phrases and made it awesome?
If he said "hangin from the rafters, bitch", would that also be his own ad-lib?

    ReplyDelete
  96. I bet dinner with Shawn would start with a 5 minute prayer, than alot about how great he is/was.

    ReplyDelete
  97. bc Goldberg was sloppy and injured a shit ton of ppl. I would be pissed too if a move a guy did to me gave me a fucking STROKE!

    ReplyDelete
  98. ok your an idiot if you think A. Cena isnt a good professional or B. Cena isnt a good wrestler.

    ReplyDelete
  99. I'm not taking Goldberg off the hook at all, I'm just saying Bret is talking out both sides of his mouth. He's trying to appear magnanimous, but he's full of shit. I don't blame him for being pissed, just come out and say so. I think Bret wouldn't attract as much angst around here if he wasn't always so disingenuous.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I certainly "marked out bro" at the hat kicking sequence. It was like FINALLY a legit asskicker is back on wrestling TV.

    ReplyDelete
  101. He did hurt all the feelings of the girls that he was cheating with ;)

    ReplyDelete
  102. Could be post stroke effects. My dad double speaks like that all the time. Don't forget a piece of his brain is literally dead from it

    ReplyDelete
  103. Fuck off, wasn't saying I thought that, was speculating that was who stick up his ass Bret had in his mind....anyone else on the roster known for blatantly calling slots?

    ReplyDelete
  104. I try man. I try.

    ReplyDelete
  105. "your an idiot" is the worst thing you can say on the internet. You are = you're.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Yeah, they're making money off of it is so not what professional wrestling is about.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Shawn "Dear Lord..."

    Bret "Yes, Shawn?"

    ReplyDelete
  109. Yeah? They're making money every time the crowd chants it or every time Michael Cole yells it during a match?

Listen, they can (and should!) make money whenever they can off anything they can. That doesn't mean I'm not going to get tired of something if they take it from this random, fun, organic thing and turn it into a bludgeon with which to thump you over the head repeatedly during Raws and PPVs.

SUPLEX CITY SUPLEX CITY LESNAR IS GONNA TAKE ROLLINS TO SUPLEX CITY AND ANOTHER SUPLEX CITY BY LESNAR TO ROLLINS AND NOW LESNAR IS LOADING ROLLINS UP FOR A TRIP TO SUPLEX CITY AND NOW THESE FANS ARE CHANTING SUPLEX CITY JOHN AND LESNAR WITH ANOTHER TRIP TO SUPLEX CITY

  110. my b, sometimes its hard to gauge where ppl are going strictly through text.

    ReplyDelete
  111. They make money off the shirt that they're promoting.
How about ROCK BOTTOM! ROCK BOTTOM! ROCK BOTTOM! Was that a horrible thing to do?

    ReplyDelete
  112. It's a pretty important part of being a pro wrestler.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Yeah, brutally honest, but refreshing given the flowery interviews given by most. And what I love is how passionate, knowledgable and modern he still is with regards to analyzing wrestling. He comes off a lot less out-of-touch, in-ring, than JR and a lot of others do. He harps on some of the same things -- selling, etc. -- but also embraces the innovations and outside-the-box (rather than "recreate this match from 1982") thinking.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Well hell, make my over-reaction to my poorly worded quip look that much worse why don't ya.....

    ReplyDelete
  115. Punk was HORRIBLE about it, but Bret loves him. Jericho does it too, and Bret has called him out on it.

But Cena is absolutely the worst offender.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Making money is important. Nothing to do with class. He's upset because SOMEONE ELSE is losing money. Not him.

    ReplyDelete
  117. THANK YOU. I've been saying that for years -- Bret's the guy that needs to be an agent, specifically because he dislikes the idea of the agent.

Bret believes in wrestlers' creativity, and he believes in helping make matches stand out and be different. All the agents now, from what I've seen/heard, discourage or are made to discourage outside-the-box thinking.

    ReplyDelete
  118. His 1st thought goes to money, not Bryan no longer following his dream. That was my point.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Eh, Cena the biggest at it right now but also the "fans can see"/"you can't see me" veiled knock but that's getting into tinfoil hat range of looking into things.

    ReplyDelete
  120. They should be happy they got hit off from the best there is, was or ever will be.

    ReplyDelete
  121. I think the Cena-Rusev series was the worst I've ever seen Cena about it. Almost like he wasn't even trying to conceal it.

    ReplyDelete
  122. If some guy kicked my head off gave me a 6 month headache and cost me 3 million a year I'd be fucking pissed.he knows bill didn't do it on purpose but still it's a work why kick someone that hard in the first place

    ReplyDelete
  123. Once Bryan got over he didn't need to take risks as much. I remember austin telling Bryan to pick his spots and stop doing that crazy shit every week.and Bryan told steve he already had a stinger so Bryan knew there was trouble.I feel bad for him but it's not like nobody told him to slow down and stop risking his health for a match on raw that will mean nothing in a months time

    ReplyDelete
  124. If bret was an agent we would see some awesome finishes to big matches and probably some better psychology

    ReplyDelete
  125. He spoke to steve on his podcast and told him that owen was wrong to not apologize.he's mentioned it a few other times

    ReplyDelete
  126. It's funny because if bret passes away everyone would be praising him and talking about how great he was

    ReplyDelete
  127. I Love all of this these but the spitting for some reason I really enjoy. Maybe because Stephanie reminds me of every bad marketing executive I've ever come across. All buzzwords no creativity

    ReplyDelete
  128. The only thing that stood out to me was him saying Owen was skeptical of Austin's injury. If that's true, what the fuck?? You dump a guy on his head and won't believe you might have really hurt the guy? Anyone else heard of this tidbit before?

    ReplyDelete
