Other Royal Rumble stuff

Hi Scott,
I have reserved myself to the fact that Roman is going to win the Rumble match and become the next undisputed Bootista. Now I'm trying to find some silver linings to the rest of the show:
1) Sadly, we won't be seeing Kharma as a surprise entrant since she is back in TNA. Is there ANYONE you see showing up unexpectedly and get a huge pop? I'm not talking about Orton, Jericho, RVD, or any of the announce team, but someone who fans would want to see.
2) The New Day has a match scheduled but what is a Rumble without Kofi's annual crazy spot to avoid elimination? What do you think Kofi will pull out this year? I had a vision of him being in the ring at the same time as Adam Rose, where Kofi gets tossed out but is caught by the Rosebuds/Exotic Express (or whatever) and they crowd surf him back into the ring.
3) And lastly, is there any point to the Ascension/ NAO match? Is it just a matter of time before they are sent back to NXT to be repackaged?

1. I've heard the Dudleyz as the biggest name, which would be fun and get a huge pop in Philly.  Really, using them to destroy the Ascension as a mystery team opponent would have been even better, but apparently no one in WWE actually watches wrestling and remembers that kind of thing anyway.

2.  Yeah, the body surf spot basically writes itself.  I've heard another awesome theory, which is that Daniel Bryan will get "injured" and taken out of the Rumble by the Authority earlier in the show and the fans get all pissed off at Reigns seeming to be the winner, until the Bunny enters at #30, gets the surprise win, and then unmasks himself as Bryan.

3.  Ain't no repackaging for the Ascension.  Much like Adam Rose, if this doesn't work, they're looking for other work.  They're too old to send down again and WWE would just save money by cutting them loose.  And no, I have no idea what the point is supposed to be.

  1. Gotta get this thing over with. Tension's getting unbearable.

  2. I hope someone gives the Ascension Will Bill Irwin's number. If anyone understands how Vince's stupidity can torpedo a career, it's The Goon.

Because they trot out the old acts all the time now, it's really hard to get that surprise pop. The Dudleyz would probably get one, especially in Philly (although the original ECW crowd is slowly dying).

Angle and the Hardyz would probably get one too (but they're both working in nowheresville)....that's about it. Everybody else that's still alive has already been used.

This is the problem. Can you think of anybody they've attempted to get over in the last 8 years that would get a surprise pop this week? Because I can't.

    ReplyDelete
  4. They're super bad at getting guys over. Certainly nothing about the promotion being tone deaf and run by a senile closet case has any bearing here. Randy Savage could come back and they'd fuck it up.

It's just kind of crazy when you think about it. They keep talking about how the story and characters are important to the product, but then no one reacts to 95% of their characters or stories. It's like they're almost purposely trying to sabotage themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Dudleyz are a great shout as potential entrants.

Surely Mizdow has to throw himself out of the Rumble?

    I see a Bryan win.

Everyone thinks it's Reigns because of what the internet is saying but if you look at the booking it seems obvious to me that Bryan is the choice. Reigns will possibly break his own record and will certainly get the Big Show out but all on screen developments say Bryan wins.

John Morrison is always a dark horse to show up and would pop the crowd for sure - how this guy isn't a top star in a company now (never mind even in a company) is shocking.

    ReplyDelete
  7. There are no territories left to raid and no Pat Patterson to make everything make sense. Vince is not good at booking. He's good at distilling ideas and punching up good ones. He needs that feeder, and it's gone.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I really like that Bunny idea.

    ReplyDelete
  9. WWE does things that make little sense and have done so for years and years so hanging the Ascension out to dry and then blaming the team for it are of course something they will do. It's to be expected and very much the norm.

I can imagine the Bunny spot being used to eliminate Kane from the rumble.

    ReplyDelete
  10. The Dudleyz don't need ECW fans to get a pop they were a successful and popular WWE team too. Philly is more than just ECW.

That wasn't really my point, but that's obvious, yes.

    Good point.

  13. Morrison is tearing it up in Lucha Underground. He's got a great head on his shoulders. He's going by the name Johnny Mondo.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Man I haven't seen a team get jobbed out this fast since The Bashams.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Ah - didn't know that.

The guy remains one of the biggest missed opportunities in recent times by the E - partly his fault.

With his look and ability the sky was the limit for the guy.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Morrison had a great look and athleticism no doubt but he never cut the promo he needed to connect with the fans. It one of Scott's Elimination Chamber rants he notes that Morrison hits a guy with a shooting star press and it got NO reaction at all. Not sure what to make of the mess with Melina backstage causing trouble for him but from the sounds of it I wish he had let her go.

    ReplyDelete
  17. He's doing awesome in lucha underground. If you're a big fan of Morrison check that show out.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I disagree about The Ascension not having jobs after this gimmick. They could totally write up a ten-minute promo where Triple H throws them a bone as added security for someone like Seth Rollins. I know J & J Security is in place, but Viktor and Konnor would be fine as two additional hired goons.

    What about the Ding Dongs?

    ReplyDelete
  20. I remember when the rumor was that they were going to be new members of the Wyatts. I wonder why they dropped that?

    ReplyDelete
  21. 17 wrestlers officially announced for the Rumble so far. Rumoured mystery entrants:

    *Possible spoilers*

    /
    /
    /
    /
    /

    Orton
    Dallas
    Sheamus
    Bubba
    D-Von
    DDP
    2 NXT guys

    That's still only 25

Room for The Mountie AND Marty Janetty...

... and the Mean Street Posse!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Help me understand this. They spend a better part of a year building the Ascension as a badass tag team in NXT, then bring them up and ... treat them like shit, have JBL berate them, and (probably) job to the New Age Outlaws? Then they'll tell them "guys, you didn't get over." Are fucking retarded, WWE? I love it when they say "get yourself over" while having the announcer on TV do nothing but shit on them and look like bitches to 50 year old relics. There is absolutely nothing wrong with The Ascension - have them beat the shit out of everyone and challenge the Usos at Wrestlemania - how fucking hard is that? I'm not even a huge Ascension fan but it just insults all of our intelligence to see this.

    ReplyDelete
  23. That's right. Enjoy the stars of NXT while you can.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Dammit, you beat me to this. I guess they weren't reaching hard enough for the brass ring...

    ReplyDelete
  25. Haha - when I read Daniel Bryan wants to be the face of Smackdown I was like, "smart man."

    ReplyDelete
  26. I don't even like the Ascension that much, but they work hard and its always cool for me personally to see two guys work that hard to be a real tag team. How does it help WWE to spend so much time and effort building a team that might help them make money only to just clownshoe them immediately?

    ReplyDelete
  27. This annoys me greatly. The total opposite of what Vince would do in the old days where he would protect everyone and put everyone over on commentary.

    ReplyDelete
  28. No more Wyatt Family unless there's women and children involved. Go Koresh with this fucking thing.

    ReplyDelete
  29. It's insane, isn't it?

Finally we get another tag team who are actually a TEAM and not just two random singles guys teaming for a while and, while they're not amazing, they could fulfil a much-needed "power team" spot in the roster.

But no, let's just bury them from the start. Mental.

    ReplyDelete
  30. They never jobbed. They won, and they vanished. Undefeated for all eternity.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Hey, that fucking guy can crack a whip.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm good on the Posse, thanks. I'd rather see Repo Man than any one of those guys.

    ReplyDelete
  33. It reminds me of a quick aside CM Punk had in his Cabana podcast. He talked about Rock coming back to team with Cena against Truth and Miz and MSG Survivor Series ... the buyrate tanked and who did they blame? Miz and Truth.

    These guys are just insane.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Mid-90s Vince used to try to convince us Doink was fucking hilarious on commentary. It's insane that this is the same person.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Lol Scott didn't answer.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Don't pretend you wouldn't mark out for former Hardcore Champion Pete Gas

    ReplyDelete
  37. You can make the hall of fame for batting .325 for your career. Vince has about three good ideas for every ten - its just those three out of ten are usually moonshot grand slams to win the World Series.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Because it was just davey the meltz guessing shit and hoping he was right

    ReplyDelete
  39. The Bashams got to be tag champs and stuff though. Ascension so far is the second coming of Public Enemy's six-week reign that consisted of them getting one fluky win over the Brood and otherwise having the other tag teams tell them they suck and need to get out, then kicking their asses and sending them out.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Oh of course. But he went from desperately trying to get bad ideas over in the mid-90s (Doink, Isaac Yankem, etc.) to burying anything with potential if he doesn't personally "get it" today. On top that, it seems the only thing Vince "gets" is terrible, out-of-date ideas.

    ReplyDelete
  41. As much as I'd like to see the Dudleyz back I'm not sure they'd work as Rumble surprises - simply because a) they'd be coming in separately and b) their natural opponents, The Ascension, likely won't be in the match

Best I can think is one of them (probably D-Von) enters first, ends up alone with Miz & Mizdow, then Bubba enters and they destroy Miz while Mizdow mimmicks it all...

    ReplyDelete
  42. I wish I had an answer, but it doesn't make sense to me either.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Saaaaaaaaaaaaaabuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Bubba will get the bigger pop, so send D-Von in first and then Bubba like two entries later.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I can't help but wonder how they're going to waste the Lucha Dragons if they get called up soon, as is rumoured.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I agree - they're only a true "surprise" if they only have one of them in the Rumble proper, with the other entering at the same time for support. Then you just have the active one eliminated and the pair of them battle to the back with the tag team members who eliminated him.

    ReplyDelete
  47. This was my thought, only one of them is getting the pop.

    ReplyDelete
  48. So it's a two-part surprise. D-Von comes in at #14 and gets a pop, #15 is a heel (Big Show?) and everyone boos. Bubba comes in at #16 and gets a bigger pop, then they start 3Ding geeks to the biggest pops.

Nothing wrong with that and gives heat to the middle guy who ISN'T Bubba.

    ReplyDelete
  49. The idea of Rollins just getting more and more security is awesome. Give him the ascension. Use Titus. Bring up baron Corbin and bull. Hire cliff Compton. Try to get Beth Phoenix back. Just keep piling them on.

    ReplyDelete
  50. True - the table-fodder has to be someone the crowd want to see get a comeuppance, too, so Big Show is a good shout.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Have ascension jump the outlaws in the back before the match, then come out to gloat about it. Then out come the Dudleys. I don't think anyone will be broken hearted if we don't get to see nao wrestle.

    ReplyDelete
  52. The Dudleyz is the easiest thing in the world to write.

They can't be in the Rumble because they're a tag team and the separate entrances would just be weird.

Ascension takes on the Outlaws, Ascension cheat and beat the Outlaws the continue beating them down after the match. Which ever Ascension can talk better grabs the house mic.

"That right there (points at NAO). That's what happens when you come up against the Ascension! We're the future of this business. This, this will happen to any tag team, past or present that gets in our way. We said we'd beat any team in WWE. We sure as hell would have destroyed any team from WCW. Oh wait, this is Philly? This is ECW country! You know, I think the last ECW heavyweight champion made my bread sticks at the Olive Garden last night. We'd kick anyone of theirs sorry asses too!"

Shooting firework mimicing a bomb drop starts, Dudleyz music hits, Bubba and D-Von are standing at the entrance way in the full getup, Bubba with the thousand yard "WTF did you just say stare."

They hit the ring, beat down, 3Ds, 'D-Von get the tables!' 3D through the tables, everyone's happy.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I'd love to see a spot in the Rumble where Kofi gets tossed out, Big E and Xavier catch him, only to then violently drop him and beat him up. They'd get some nice heel heat for robbing us of another great Kofi Rumble moment and you've got a new team to feud with the Usos. Plus this whole three person team is doing no good for any of them right now.

    ReplyDelete
  54. You could have nobody come out at #18, leaving fans feeling like somebody was injured or missed the spot (in kayfabe). Then #19 hits, and both Dudleys come out together, implying that one of them was 18 and the other 19, but they didn't want to come out separately.

I mean, it's kind of silly, since it skirts the rules ("I was supposed to come out 18th but just decided, 'You know what? Naaaaah'"), but it's the only way I can think of them both getting the big Rumble surprise pop.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Have we heard anything about Vince not liking them? At the very least if that's the case it would make sense if he buries them. If no one has any real problem with them, that's even crazier to consider.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Answer: Vince took one look at their size and laughed.

    ReplyDelete
  57. They aren't that small, are they?

    ReplyDelete
  58. Actually...how can anybody think that Miz and Truth are main event a+ players? I never had used them in that role. The whole Miz push was one of the worst ideas ever in the history of WWFe.

    ReplyDelete
  59. They're medium sized for WWE, but their gimmick is they're a monster tag team, and they're not really big enough to pull that off.

Konnor is listed at 6'4" 265, Viktor is 6'2" 215. Viktor is like Sami Zayn's size.

    Hawk was 6'3" 270, Animal was 6'1 310

Even if the Road Warriors were slightly shorter, they're were way bigger and of course likely roided like crazy which Ascension isn't.

They're also just not very good wrestlers, especially Konnor.

  60. Adam "Colorado" CurryJanuary 23, 2015 at 8:42 AM

RVD and probably Sabu make 27, Jericho's insistence he won't be there makes me think he will be, there's 28. They'll add the bunny because when you create the dumbest fucking thing in about 30 years you gotta use it, that's 29. 30 will probably be another one-shotter, I'm guessing X-Pac. I wouldn't do the bronco buster if I were you, Sean.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Adam "Colorado" CurryJanuary 23, 2015 at 8:44 AM

Truth was an A+ player, it was just in a D- company. And fuck Miz.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I have to say - I may be alone in this - but I quite liked the Miz as WWE Champ. He had that real slimy charisma that made the crowds want to see him get his arse kicked.

Nowadays, it's rare to find a true slimy heel bastard that crowds want to see die rather than becoming "cool" as a result. He played it pitch-perfect, I think.
