WWF Saturday Night's Main Event January 3rd, 1987

January 3, 1987 From the Civic Center in Hartford, CT. Your hosts are Jesse Ventura and Vince McMahon Matches tonight include Paul Orndorff vs. Hulk Hogan in a Steel Cage Match for the WWF World Heavyweight Championship, Adrian Adonis vs. Roddy Piper, George Steele vs. Randy Savage for the WWF Intercontinental Championship, and King Harley Race vs. Junkyard Dog.

Random Triple H question

Scott, Adam here. I remember for a while you were calling Triple H "HHHH". What was the 4th H for? BYOBB.  That second B was a typo. Anyway, I sent an e-mail to explain the joke, but in case anyone else cares and didn't get the obvious multiple layers of the joke, it's a two-parter: 1)  The fourth H stands for "HGH", and he needed the fourth H because... 2)  He was so gigantically bloated when he returned in 2002 that clearly he was bigger than HHH and had now expanded to HHHH.   So there you go.

Blog question

Hey Scott,   Finally got round to listening to the CM Punk podcast. Although it doesn't seem like he'll return to WWE (and fair play to him if he never has to), the fact that he never main evented Wrestlemania still obviously rankles him. This is something he can still obviously do. If he ever decided to return, it'd be huge and we know that Vince will always be open to it if it would make money.   Two questions.   1) What match involving Punk do you think would be a worthy main event at Wrestlemania? Obvious contender is now HHH (if he's willing to put past grudges behind him) or perhaps John Cena. Personally, I think Punk vs Bryan would be awesome. They are the two biggest stars WWE has created since Cena/Orton/Batista and their careers have obvious parallels. Also, Bryan is now on the same level as Punk (possibly even bigger?) whereas during their 2012 feud he wasn't quite there yet so it wouldn't seem stale (in the same way that Rock vs HHH wasn't stale

The Foundation Face Turn

Hi Scott, Was there a direct storyline reason for the Hart Foundation's original face turn?  I remember it essentially happening as Bret sending Jimmy to the back before a singles match on Superstars, and I guess that Bret had been a bit face-y since the battle royal, but I can't recall if there was a specific incident or tease of the split prior to that. Well the main impetus was the battle royal that opened WM4, where Bad News turned on him, but the main turn came because Jimmy Hart started two-timing them by managing the Rougeau Brothers as well and then turned around and sold the Harts' contracts to the Rougeaus.  The turn was gradual leading up to that, with Bret doing singles matches and wrestling more as a babyface, specifically against Bad News.

Sting

Hi Scott, I thought bringing back Sting in the manner that they did at Survivor Series was well done.  It got people talking, and ratings for RAW went up (slightly) than what they normally do the following night. But I think next week's ratings will go back down again because Sting didn't appear on RAW.  Creatively, to me, it makes absolutely no sense that he wouldn't show up the next night to explain his actions, and to start a program or something. Now I understand you don't want to burn out the aura of him coming back by having him appear on TV week after week for the sake of just one match at Wrestlemania that's months away, but I don't see the harm in planting the seeds now and getting a bit more of a payoff from his Survivor Series appearance..  He can cut whatever promo and end it with "I'll come back when it's time" and there'll be a buzz about when that time will actually happen. I guess I'm just ranting a bit, but do you like

Throwback link for the blog about miz and the Real World

Found this article while cleaning out my mailbox. Article on the Real World season The Miz was on, from right before when the season in question debuted, which singles him out as far as his presence on the show embodying how far the franchise had fallen in terms of the franchise becoming formulaic and cliched.   I only watched a couple of episodes of the season in question when it first aired (Real World pretty much jumped the shark around Seattle/Hawaii and Hawaii itself pretty much was a clusterfuck of fail that broke the franchise) but I'm curious, given the retroactive fame issue and that that The Miz is one of the ultra few Real World cast members to go on to amount to anything, why the WWE never really mentioned or brought up his Real World days when he became a centerpiece of the company. Even when he was going toe-to-toe with John Cena, we never got to see Cena throw the Real World into Miz's face to mock him. Is the Real World off-limits by the WWE (which is insane giv

The death of Phillip Hughes ......

I know most of your readers are American, but for those who follow cricket on here, a difficult but extraordinary week has ended. I thought it might be appropriate for the board to at least note the passing of the young Australian cricketer, Phillip Hughes. A promising, charismatic and thrillingly unorthodox batsman, he was struck in the neck by cricket ball whilst batting in a match on Tuesday and died on Thursday. He was the equivalent, I think, of MLB's most prodigious young hitter. More than that, the bowler is also young and full of potential. The grief is therefore partly for Sean Abbott, who was simply bowling as aggressively as possible. A twitter-inspired #putoutyourbats gesture broke out in all cricket-playing nations, whereby cricket bats were placed outside houses, businesses, schools and parliaments. Players of other sports - first division soccer - walked out to play with a cricket bat in hand.  Before the rugby international in England, the crowd stood and applauded

WCW World War 3: November 24, 1996

What have we seen in the last 4 weeks? Well, for starters, I’m more concerned with what we haven’t seen. The last pay-per-view was completely dominated with the Savage / Liz storyline from hell, but yet, I remain on edge since Randy disappeared right after that event and hasn’t been heard from since. Of course, the announcers have not mirrored my elevated levels of alertness, but this is WCW so that is no surprise. In other news, Mean Gene returned to his natural post, while Ric Flair found a shirt that was completely unnatural. Jeff Jarrett has appeared on every show, wrestling the exact same match, and giving the exact same interview. Bill Murray wishes he had that kind of stoic, repetitive range. Sting has turned into a brooding teenager, and rarely comes out of his room. When he does, he’s in a foul mood, wears dark clothing, and doesn’t want to talk to anyone. Diamond Dallas Page has started garnering a little fan support by rejecting the nWo, while Chris Jericho has

Old Survivor Series ???

Spending my Thanksgiving weekend watching the original SS shows (87-89).  Couple random ones: 1) after wrestling in 87-88, Danny Davis is back to a ref in 89; was there an angle where he turned face and got his referee license back? 2) what was the plan for Bam Bam in 88?  He was booked super strong in the main event and then bounced out of the title tournament at WM 4 and just gone 3) how awesome was the women's match at the inaugural event??? Is that the best women's match in WWE history?  Or is the 95 elimination match better? 4) don't you miss the epic ten-team tag matches? Those were two fast and phenomenal 45-min matches 1.  Not really an angle so much as Jack Tunney coming on TV one week and being like "I think Danny Davis has learned his lesson, and can now referee again."  Sidenote:  Vince McMahon thought Evil Referee Danny Davis would be the biggest thing ever and was apparently shocked when it bombed completely.  The idea of a referee cheating

Luger Question

So, I finally broke down (since I have disposable income again) and signed up for the Network <insert 9.99 joke here>. I'm still on my trial but I've been watching a lot of old NWA/WCW PPVs (I have the Great American Bash 1990 on as I type this, Luger-Mean Mark) and this is more of a what if. But what if Luger had gone to the WWF after his time in Florida circa 1986-1987? How different do you think his career would have been? Would he have been groomed as a replacement for Hogan? Would he have gotten the Savage-like treatment (friend then enemy, title traded between them)? Would he have gotten the Warrior spot at WrestleMania VI? Would he have been a midcard draw/IC Title contender? Interesting question.  Luger's circumstances were kind of special in 86 because Crockett pretty much snapped him up instantly following his debut and groomed him to be a Horseman.  Everyone knew he was green as grass and terrible in the ring, but working with Flair and Windham and that cr

The Anti Smark Perspective

Scott, I listened to the CM Punk podcast last evening, it was tremendous. CM Punk really brought to light how awful the current regime and the "corporate era" is. 2 interesting things were brought up during the podcast.  -  He told off Triple H about ruining his 2011 momentum.  -  He forced change of the Wrestlemania 30 plans by leaving, as Daniel Bryan wa s NOT booked to  wrestle  for the WWE Title.  Clearly even CM Punk himself was upset about jobbing to Triple H and then proceeding to be 50/50 booked including losing to Truth / Miz when he was "white hot".  So many people tried to argue that he wasn't buried when clearly he was, and Punk himself was even bitter about it.  Clearly Daniel Bryan was going to be "Daniel Wyatt" for at least a few months. A Daniel Wyatt action figure was even planned which are made months in advance. Daniel Bryan being in the Mania main event was clearly never the plan despite many anti smarks arguing that it was.  Wait,

WCW Worldwide: November 24, 1996

With just hours before the end of world peace is broadcast on pay-per-view, it remains incredible WCW is able to maintain any kind of order. Yet, here we are, with a star studded lineup. What if I told you Hollywood Hogan defends his World Title against Sting, while Roddy Piper guest referees? For starters, that would make me a colossal liar. Story of the Yes! Movement

Until Southern States Wrestling gets some new matches to air (hopefully from the Thanksgiving Extravaganza held last Wednesday), here's a different kind of rerun that I found while checking out the new YouTube section as I while away the last few hours of my free month on The Network: While it suffers from the usual WWE spin (some other guy was actually the first to call Daniel Bryan a Goat Face...guess he wasn't anybody important), this 163 second video highlights the tremendous entertainment potential of the top-notch WWE production crew that is constantly wasted by a senile chairman who's only agenda is to entertain himself. Lesnar Plans?

Scott,   If it is indeed true that Brock Lesnar is done with WWE after WrestleMania, do you think it is worth having him headline that show as champion?  In the internet era of instant information, everyone is going to know he's done before the show even rolls around.  They ran into that problem at WrestleMania 20 the last time he (and his opponent) left.  The only saving grace for that match was that it was thankfully not the main event or a title match getting shit all over by the crowd.  Personally, I think if WWE knows he is done post-WM31, Brock doesn't go into the show as champ.  I think the way to go is for Cena to take the belt at Rumble and be the guy to put Reigns over at Mania.  As mentioned on the Blog by many, having Cena as champ is the one surefire way to get the fans to support Reigns in that match.  I'm not sure Reigns gets the fans' support against Lesnar and I could see the whole "Brock threatens to retire with the belt tomorrow night&quo

WCW Saturday Night: November 23, 1996

Sometimes it’s hard to embrace change, and other times it’s just so good it’s delicious. I’m still not quite sure what to make of Monday night. On one hand, you can’t question his motives – his track record has earned himself the benefit of the doubt. But was it the right move in the long run? I don’t know. I think at the end of the day, it probably wound up hurting a lot more than it helped at all, and even though likely won the Ugly Christmas Sweater contest at Turner Studios, I truly believe Ric Flair cost himself at least a dozen riders for Space Mountain. TONY SCHIAVONE  has stopped his protest and rejoined the cast of WCW.  DUSTY RHODES  is dressed with him, all in black, to mourn the death of Ric Flair’s style. Heel Hogan in WWF circa 1993?

Was it ever on the cards for Hulk Hogan to turn heel in the WWF back in 1993, prior to him leaving for WCW? With hindsight, it seems like it would've been the natural thing to do. His act was already stale by that point and the fans were starting to turn against him anyway. A Hogan heel turn would've generated massive publicity for the struggling WWF at that time, and a feud between the newly hated Hogan and Bret Hart as the babyface underdog could've been a big draw. All you ever heard from Vince McMahon at the time though was that he wanted Hulk Hogan to become the "Babe Ruth of the WWF", steadily phased out of the limelight but brought back periodically as a "special attraction". McMahon was so fixated on this particular conception of Hogan's future that he couldn't see the forest for the trees. He could've stolen a march on WCW by a good three years and made a mint from a Hogan heel run. Were they that blind that they couldn't see

Quantity and quality

Hi Scott, Forgive the topic name but had to put something there?! I got thinking after reading your reply to someone about them watching Raw, Smackdown, Main Event AND NXT... My wrestling viewing/fandom has been reduced from the above to simply reading Raw results, cherry picking anything that might be worth watching (hint: not much) and watching NXT & Lucha Underground.  I also catch a couple of British wrestling shows a month (I'm a UK resident)... it amazes me how some people have the time to watch WWE, TNA, ROH as well as their local shows?! New Viewers

Scott, I've been reading your wrestling blog for a couple months, and I was curious what you think the WWE can do to bring more new fans in.  My wife and I just started watching this year.  We're nerdy type people so we gravitated toward the websites and an analytical view of wrestling pretty quickly, but I still get the sense that we enjoy the product a lot more than long time fans do--maybe we're just less jaded, and still surprised by things others wouldn't be. In any case, it seems like bringing in new fans shoudl be a key part of the WWE's strategy, but I don't see them doing much outreach to prospective viewers.  I firmly believe most people would enjoy wrestling if they would give it a shot, but most people just thhink of it as "stupid" and "fake." I knwo what sorts of things make more invested fans happier, but there's got to be mroe the WWE can do to reach out to people like me and my wife, who just had to give it a shot--now we
