Starrcade Countdown: 1986

I know you’re thinking “What the fuck are you counting down to?” but don’t confuse me with details.  I kind of felt like doing the 2011 Scott Sez treatment for Starrcade through December, so it’s a countdown, OK?  Better that than a month of crappy WWE December PPVs. WWE Best PPV Matches 2011 DVD

http://bluray.ign.com/articles/121/1213541p1.html I didn’t even know this was coming out, but I guess it makes sense.  Was there one last year?  I have the 2009 one but I don’t recall a best of 2010.  Punk v. Cena is a no-brainer, as is HHH v. Undertaker.  What else was really good this year?  Orton v. Christian (pick one), maybe an Elimination Chamber match, I dunno.

The Live Smackdown Thread

Dunno if anyone’s watching this show, but if you are and want a place to discuss it, have at it.  Last minute prediction from yours truly:  Mark Henry retains the title over Daniel Bryan, but Bryan hurts the leg so badly that Henry is unable to get up after the win.  Bryan cashes in the briefcase for an immediate rematch, but Michael Cole slams the cage door in his face to cost him the title and make him the first person to lose his MITB cash-in match.

WWE Network

Do you think the WWE Network has a chance to succeed? Because I really don't, unless they move SmackDown and PPVs to the channel -- and even then I'm not sure. We've seen sports leagues & college conferences eventually make networks profits (Big Ten, NFL, MLB, etc.) but it took a lot of time & most lost money the first year or two, as well as not being a publicly-traded companies that would have investors ticked off at early losses. They even had the advantage of having a surplus of live games to show. WWE can't move Raw. It could move SmackDown, but do they risk effectively killing that audience off? I know they suggested moving the big PPVs to the WWE Network, but there's no way the Royal Rumble or SummerSlam is going to be as profitable on a network as it is on PPV. The lesser PPVs, like Money in the Bank or Night of Champions, maybe. It just seems to me that the WWE is rushing into creating a network because it thinks it could solve their problems. But

Hogan v. Flair

Hey Scott, Long time reader way back from Wrestleline etc. Question - what was the real story behind WM VIII, ie why didn't Vince book Hogan vs Flair and build it up as the biggest match of all time? I would guess that no one wanted to do the job, but Flair clearly had no problem jobbing to Hogan 2 years later in WCW, so what gives? To my mind there were three epic Hogan Wrestlemanias, WM III vs andre, WM VI vs warrior, and WM XVIII vs Rock, (all btw in a dome which I think was necessary for all three) so why did this one (also in a dome) not happen? And if Vince was trying to save it for a later time, when was that going to be? He wasn’t trying to save anything, he just didn’t have confidence in Flair-Hogan as a main event and never actually intended to go with it.  And to be fair, the house show run in 1991 was a success the first time around, but by the second swing business was way down and Flair was pretty much just another Hogan challenger.  There was no evidence that the H

Kerry In 90

"The WWF , fearing Kerry’s suicide (and a HUGE public relations nightmare) decided to take the title off him and then that way, if he killed himself, they wouldn’t look bad.  What great guys, huh?  " I'm sorry, but what else would you have wanted them to do, exactly? Keep the belt on him and risk him killing himself while still the champion in the middle of a house show/TV taping run where he'd have been second from the top of the card (or close to it)? It's not as if there wasn't anyone else to put the belt on who was just as over as he was (if not more so), so what would their incentive have been to keep the second most important title in the company on someone they knew was troubled?

Vince McMahon Plug

Hey Scott, I know Vince McMahon is discussed at length on this blog roll, usually with incredulity, but I was wondering if you wouldn't mind sharing my look at where he's headed as a promoter (though he'd sure hate to be called that today), and my examination of just how his mojo ran out. There's been a lot of talk of Vince losing his mind over the past several years, but I think this puts it in perspective. http://www.wrestlingnewssource.com/news/21968/Column-THE-DEATH-OF-VINCE-MCMAHON/ Thanks in advance for giving it a look-see. I'd totally watch a show where Vince gets dropped into a jungle and has to survive off the land.  Frankly I'm shocked Vince hasn't done any celebrity reality shows over the years, he'd be PERFECT for almost any of them.  He'd create drama, blow up at other contestants at a moment's notice and constantly think he's better than everyone else while trying to win their favor.  It would be breathtakingly great TV. Anyway

Sin Cara: Turning Japanese?

If you want a scoop to blog about, they are still available on WWE Japan Shop: http://wwejapanshop.jp/t-shirt/TSS207Q.html I ordered three XLs.  If I get them, can I trade you one in return for access to the password for your Rant archive, and a signed picture of you wearing the shirt?   Not that anyone actually prints photos anymore, but sure, deal. Are we sure those aren't Hunico's genitals?  Either way, it does certainly confirm the stories I've heard about Sin Cara being a big dick backstage and overly cocky for his position.

WWE: The TV Show

Hi Scott Long time reader. I recently saw on AV Club that another drama series about wrestling is apparently being developed, this one by Jerry Bruckheimer set in the 80's. That may or may not happen, however, and you may well have touched on this at some point but bear with me (or not...up to you!), I'd be interested to hear your thoughts in more detail as to precisely what a hypothetical series on wrestling would ideally look like.

WM 23 Clarified

Justin Shapiro writes… Scottholomew, Was checking out the ol' blog (thanks for the kind words a few weeks back) and I can help answer the WM23 question. HHH/Cena was the planned main event all year and was to be promoted as "Cena/Triple H 2" like a boxing or UFC fight, positioned as the historic rematch between the two greatest men.

Sledgehammer of Plot

Am I the only one that hates the sledgehammer as a weapon?  I mean, we all know that it's not real, but if you really are going to hit someone with a sledgehammer, and you going to cover one end with your hand?  It just reeks of fake.  At least they could make a rubber sledgehammer or something.

The Worst Times To Be On The Internet

http://www.cracked.com/blog/the-4-worst-times-to-be-internet/ Dan O’Brien speaks so much truth here.  World Cup mania and people obsessed with Occupy Wall Street make no sense to me, and I’m also generally against April Fools Day stuff as well.  Although true story, a friend, who actually spends a lot of time on the internet, recently (as in two weeks or so ago) saw the Rebecca Black video for the first time and was like “Have you seen this Rebecca Black chick? She’s TERRIBLE”.  Which means that we’ll probably get a “Friday” parody on RAW next month.

Zig Zagged

Scott, A friend and I firmly disagree on how we see Dolph Ziggler's future turning out. He says that Ziggler drops the U.S. Title to Zack Ryder and moves on to bigger and better things, namely a main event push. I think he drops the title to Mason Ryan, gets lost in the tag team shuffle with Swagger, and winds up being quietly traded to Smackdown in the next draft. Which do you find more likely? I know they’re stupid about it and will probably shoot themselves in the foot a million times before it happens, but I really think they want to push Ziggler to the moon and he’s been able to overcome all the ridiculous handicaps against him thus far, so I wouldn’t bet against it.  Much like his contemporary Zack Ryder, fans have started seeing and actively accepting him as a person at a certain level, and once you’ve made it to that plateau (someone who can believably hang with, say, Randy Orton in a random match situation)  it’s actually quite difficult to get brought down to a lower leve

WWE ‘12

Hey Scott, Sounds like WWE 12 is Post-No Mercy Dud #8,281: http://www.ugo.com/games/wwe-12-review Really?  Every other review I’ve read pretty much hails it as the spiritual successor to No Mercy.  I was even thinking of picking it up eventually.

WM23

Hi Scott, Just wanted to get yours and your readers thoughts on what would have happened at WM 23 if HHH hadn't gone down injured. On Shawn's DVD, HHH says that it was supposed to be him and Cena but Shawn subbed in after he got injured. Despite hearing it from the horses mouth so to speak, I can't help but feel this is wrong for several reasons.... 1) Why would the WWE run a repeat main event from the year before? It was hardly Rock/Austin, Hogan/Andre, Bret/Shawn - so I can't see why it would have been considered? It wasn't an epic main event. 2) What would they have done with Shawn? Would he have just dropped into the midcard? 3) Wouldn't the above have been totally out of character (Kayfabe) for the "spotlight" hugging Michaels to let his friend go for the title while he fights KIng Booker (as I heard mentioned) or something? I enjoyed what we got - the Shawn/Cena feud produced two superb matches and an excellent four way at

Rock Responds

http://nodq.com/wwe/323905442.shtml - comments from WWE Magazine.  He's talking about Punk, obviously, and of course Randy Orton. As a fan, I'm loving ALL of this. Rock knows the deal.  He’s not gonna throw away a potential money angle just because Cena’s the only thing on the radar right now.  I wish more guys had his attitude and ability to pick up the thread of the feud when presented to him.

Rock knows the deal.  He’s not gonna throw away a potential money angle just because Cena’s the only thing on the radar right now.  I wish more guys had his attitude and ability to pick up the thread of the feud when presented to him.

Luger Finds Jesus

I came across this story regarding Lex Luger. Regardless of ones stance on religon I'm glad to see Luger may be turning his life around. The sport didn't need another death, and a few years ago it sure seemed Lex was head that way. http://www.bpnews.net/BPnews.asp?ID=36636 I think we can all agree that the finish of Bash 88…oh, sorry, wrong Luger thread.  I’m really glad Lex seems to have made peace with his demons, because for a while there it looked like he was going to be another statistic.  Perhaps someone needs to persuade Matt Hardy to look into this religion thing.

I kid. I think.  Anyway, these two superstars need to put this feud behind them and form the most awesome tag team in history:  PUNK ROCK.  Sign that shit, Vince.

Jumping The Shark

Scott, Was interested in your thoughts about when the various WWF/WWE titles “jumped the shark” in your mind. I’ve listed my thoughts below. I’ve limited the list to “traditional” WWF titles (pre-WCW merger and pre-WWE), since I’m a nostalgic son of a gun and pine for the return of long term title reigns and the odd Intercontinental or Tag Team title match headlining a major card or house show.

Booster Gold: The Series?

http://insidepulse.com/2011/11/22/syfy-orders-pilot-script-for-booster-gold/ I know a lot of shows get ordered as pilots and go nowhere, but this could be awesome if it actually gets to the screen.  With a bigger budget it could be Quantum Leap for 2012, but even if they stick to the standard “glory seeking jackass superhero from the future” gimmick that would feel like a fresh idea anyway.

Survivor Series Countdown, DVD Edition: The Rock (The Most Electrifying Man…)

The SmarK DVD Rant for The Rock - The Most Electrifying Man in Sports Entertainment - Well you knew I was going to hit THIS one sooner or later… Disc One Another day, another definitive three disc collection. This is part of the "new format" WWE releases, where they talk about a match and then show it, rather than the more traditional documentary followed by extra matches, except in this case the "talk and show" format is even more tacked-on than usual and it's basically just a collection of matches.

Yeah, it’s my shameless attempt to further milk the Rock’s return, so sue me.  Today it’s the three previous Rock DVD releases, as originally done by me in 2008. The SmarK DVD Rant for The Rock: The People's Champ - So this, like many of the early WWF DVDs, is an expanded and remastered version of a video tape release from a few months before.

Matt Goes To Jail Now

http://www.f4wonline.com/more/more-top-stories/96-wwe/23054-matt-hardy-jailed-after-accusation-of-breaking-terms-of-probation Did you ever think we’d get to the point where Jeff was looking like the stable and sensible one in comparison?  On the bright side, Matt once made a big show of revealing his million dollar savings account on Youtube, so now he can put it to good use until he’s tried and given an even longer sentence.  I don’t foresee any 10 day slap on the wrist for Matt, and I don’t foresee any happy ending to the story, either.  Can we trace this all back to Edge stealing his girlfriend, do you think?

(2011 Scott sez:  There is no 2005 rant.  I think it was Cena v. Angle or something like that, I honestly forget.) The SmarK Rant for WWE Survivor Series 2006 - Weekly turnover on 24/7 is coming soon, so I figure I should get this one wrapped up while I could. - Live from Philly - Your hosts are Michael Cole, JBL, Jim Ross, and Jerry Lawler. They should just promote JBL to RAW and let him do all the PPVs with Jim Ross.  (2011 Scott sez:  Or they could have him come out of retirement and do a crappy run with Cena before retiring again.  Whatever.)

UFC Preview

Here is my preview of UFC 139: Shogun vs. Henderson. http://www.ultimatesportstalk.com/theultimatefightshow/?p=130 Also, make sure you check out The Ultimate Fight Show, this Saturday at Noon ET! http://www.blogtalkradio.com/theultimatefightshow/2011/11/19/the-ultimate-fight-show Thanks for the support! Should be a good show, but UFC runs way, WAY too many shows at this point.  Henderson v. Shogun should be a semi-main or a main event on free TV, not a PPV main.  I’m hoping that Hendo wins because he’d make for a more interesting challenger to Jon Jones than Rua would.

Savage v. Piper

Was there ever a WWF mini-program between Savage and Piper?  Seems like those two would have had a feud for the ages during their prime.  Two of the all-time great heels, but even a face vs. face match in '91-'92 timeframe would have been classic.  Obviously the later WCW matches were embarassing but both guys were done by then. I am 99.9999% sure that they had at least one match in late 1986/early 1987 during a house show run, which would be after Piper’s return and face turn and before Savage’s face turn, but I don’t recall anything about it or if it’s on any video releases.  Otherwise, no, I don’t think they ever met outside of WCW, and more’s the shame because the promos would have been EPIC.  Can you imagine Piper blocking the double axehandle by giving Savage the Stooge Eyepoke?  My god, that would be worth **** right there.

Summer of Plug

Hey Scott, Did an interview with Punk this morning, would love a plug if you have time. Loving the idea of a Punk/Freebirds feud. http://bit.ly/rQsMVV Best, Gordon Punk and Hayes would make for quite the series of promos.  The drinking contest would be pretty one-sided, though.

Plans For Austin?

Scott -- I was reading something from one of your books about Steve Austin and it got me thinking. Were there any plans for Austin after WrestleMania XIX? He put the Rock over to set up Rock/Goldberg, then he was written out of the storyline the following night on Raw due to his messed up neck and apparent panic attack the night before the show. Or whatever it was. If he had been healthy enough to keep going, was there a plan for Austin? A move to Smackdown or a feud with HHH or Flair or Michaels on Raw or something? I seem to recall from your review of Raw the night after WrestleMania where Bischoff "fired" him you wrote something like, "See you on Smackdown!" At the time I thought that the injury thing was a work, but in hindsight it’s pretty clear they were phasing him out in favor of Brock and Angle.  Plus given that Austin’s neck had been known to be shot since the Owen injury in 1997, he had been living on borrowed time anyway.  So unless Austin real

Scott Reviews The New 52 (And Other Stuff Too!)  - 11.16.11 I really need a new name for this column, I think. So apologies for skipping last week, but I was out of town with only my phone connecting me to the outside world, and I just can’t get the hang of Comixology for Android.  All you need to know from last week:  Just go out and buy Batwoman, it’s the most beautifully drawn comic I’ve ever seen and it’s filled with complex and realistic characters who are in a world that’s trippy and surreal.  It’s just awesome. People have been asking me to review other things on my pull list besides DC, so last week I was all set to add my thoughts on Avenging Spider-Man (AWESOME!), New Avengers (a totally disappointing rehash of the Dark Avengers) and Point One (I have no idea what’s going on here but I think I’ll buy Scarlet Spider if it ever comes out).  This time, I’ll throw Deadpool #46 in there since I read it every month and never see reviews for it anywhere, and Atomic Robo and the

Hey Scott, After reading through the Prime thread and doing some of my own thinking, I have come up with a question for you. Wrestlers have their years that they're just...on, a year that they're kicking ass in the ring, tearing it up on the mic and just delivering incredible promo after incredible promo. 1989: Ric Flair 1990: Ric Flair 1991: 1992: 1993: 1994: Bret Hart 1995: 1996: Steve Austin 1997: Shawn Michaels 1998: 1999: 2000: Triple H 2001: 2002: 2003: Brock Lesnar 2004: 2005: Samoa Joe 2006: Samoa Joe 2007: 2008: 2009: Chris Jericho 2010: 2011: CM Punk How would you fill out the timeline and who would you add or remove from my list? I’ll leave this one as an exercise to the readership because I can’t really judge much past 2005 or so.  How’s that for a cop-out?

Questions Three!

Hey Scott, still injured and trucking through your old reviews (and still enjoying the heck out of them). I was curious if you ever went back and ranted on the Goldberg/Michaels match from 2003? I ask because A) I'm a huge Michaels fan, and B) it's one of the only "good" Goldberg matches I've ever seen (minus the finish), and I'd be curious to see what you thought of it, either at the time or now. It's no ***** classic or anything, but for a Goldberg match that isn't a squash, it works pretty well, IMO. I don’t even remember what match you’re talking about, so no.  Follow up, Lesnar just said if he ever comes back (and he thinks he will, eventually) his first choice would be to fight Austin. Now, Austin has said if HE ever comes back his first choice would be Punk. Do you think one or both of those are going to happen? I think Austin is so incredibly smart that he won’t waste his name value and potential comeback angle by playing seco

UFC As Sports Entertainment

What are your thoughts on this? http://mobile.cagesideseats.com/2011/11/15/2564791/ufc-admits-theyre-sports-entertainment-to-get-legalised-in-new-york Holy shit, I forgot about that Vince McMahon oily muscle pose.  That’s gonna haunt my nightmares now. As for the actual article, Dana White has never been shy about admitting the stuff he swiped from wrestling, and reasonable fans outside of the hardcore MMA nerds are fine with it.  Whether it’s classed as “sports” or “entertainment” is a matter of semantics for the IRS to care about.  If that’s what it takes to get UFC into MSG, call it theater and nominate it for a Tony for all I care.  Like, does anyone really care about calling wrestling “sports entertainment” who isn’t employed by WWE?  It’s just a vague, meaningless term for the beancounters.

Regal Rib

Hi Scott, longtime reader yada yada yada... Like most of us you probably don't watch Superstars (is it even on in Canada?) but this week we were treated to Regal vs Bryan, but even better, someone behind the scenes decided to pull a rib on regal by switching his entrance music. Safe to say, he's a real man's man. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDhqezjxosk&feature=youtube_gdata_player It’s not on in Canada, but we do get NXT, so lucky us.  That was pretty awesome, though, and makes me think I should watch Superst….BWAHAHAHAHAHA, sorry couldn’t even get through that sentence.
