Narratively, the last great tag team in WWE has to be the Dudley Boyz, right? Isn't that weird? But also totally correct because they were? Time is messed UP.
You could probably also make a case for DX, but yes, I think the Dudleyz are going to stand as the last big tag team dynasty.
I was so drunk when I sent this.
ReplyDeleteGreat is subjective, but Angle/Benoit, Shield, Team Hell No, MNM, Jerichoshow and I'm likely forgetting more, are all teams I considered to be great.
ReplyDeleteIf they'd lasted longer, The Shield or the Wyatts would have been in with a shout.
ReplyDeleteThe Usos are also a decent possibility, surely?
Slater and Gabriel might have had a shot if they hadn't been broken up for reasons known only to this company.
ReplyDeleteFuck you for overlooking the Dicks, the Heart Throbs, and the Gymini
ReplyDeleteThe Usos are underrated. Their matches with the Shield were really good.
ReplyDeleteLooks like you were the one messed UP
ReplyDeleteI'm a Deuce and Domino guy. Any team that hails from "The Wrong Side of the Tracks" is A-OK with me.
ReplyDeleteLol I was going to include them in my post, but that actually had a decent run for a bit. Goddamn 2006-07 SD was shit.
ReplyDeleteThey break up tag teams before they even get a chance to get over anymore.
ReplyDeleteand the Wyatts and Cody/Goldust
ReplyDeleteAND DO NOTHING WITH THEM ONCE THEY SPLIT
ReplyDeleteA lot of people would argue that most of those teams are just singles dudes thrown together for a program for several months/a year or two, whereas teams like the Dudleyz are almost exclusively tag wrestlers.
ReplyDeleteThis is easy to say in retrospect, given how both guys floundered in their own way last year, but they really should have just given The Real Americans an extended run.
ReplyDeleteUsos get unfairly shitting on. If they came around during 2000, they would have held their own.
ReplyDeleteThe Usos have had some good matches but they bore me to tears.
ReplyDeleteI'd argue that in terms of workrate, and probably charisma as well, oh Hell, let's just say overall, the Usos are the best Samoan/Island team ever.
ReplyDeleteThat was an awesome touch. Cherry had a great rack, too.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, how did they consider her too fat to be employed?
ReplyDeleteEnzo Amore and Big Cass are the most charismatic team I've seen since the New Age Outlaws. I'd love to see them get brought up and given a good run.
ReplyDeleteThe Miz and Morrison could've got there. They each cancelled out the others negatives and accentuated the positives. Uso's would be if they had iconic foes. And Rollins/Reigns were excellent briefly.
ReplyDeleteMNM should've been great, but like most teams people are mentioning were broken up very fast. Didn't Mercury have drug issues?
ReplyDeleteThe Hardys?
ReplyDeleteNo lobe for London and Kendrick?
Snag with the Uso's is they lack an iconic foe. If they had their equivalent of The Dudley's/E&C they'd be fucking set.
ReplyDeleteI think the thing is that Jericho/Show never played it for 'we're above these titles.' Jericho in particular sold the Hell out of the run.
ReplyDeleteIf we're going for London/Kendrick, then Regal/Taylor should be in there too. Excellent tag team, and the perfect foil for high-flying teams.
ReplyDeleteYeah that makes it even worse.
ReplyDeleteTechnically, the Hardyz (no longer "Boyz) reunited after the Dudley Boyz left, so THEY'RE the last ones.
ReplyDeleteIf your companies owner isn't aware you are there, you don't matter, regardless of title reign length.
ReplyDeleteThey were fine, but Kendrick really came into his own as a cocky heel after the breakup. Then HHH turned him into a punching bag and it all went to shit, because of course.
ReplyDeleteI thought they were seriously underutilized (jobbing in non-title matches constantly, often not featured at all, but "great" is a stretch. They probably had the potential to be, but I can't say they are just because they didn't get the chance.
ReplyDeleteIt's too bad beer money didn't jump to the wwe. They have easily been the best and most entertaining team over the last couple of yrs
ReplyDeleteHow great would an extended tag title run as faces have been for Rollins/Reigns? Rollins flying all over the place, hot tags to Reigns, etc.
ReplyDeleteWe're talking about a company that thought Molly Holly and Mickey James were large enough to do "fat chick" angles with
ReplyDeleteI think that's the only thing that's stopping anyone from putting Beer Money on the list, because they definitely deserve to be mentioned.
ReplyDeleteSame thing with XxX. Guys like Storm and Skipper are just dynamite in tag teams.
ReplyDeleteEveryone's matches with The Shield were really good.
ReplyDeleteHarper & Rowan should have stayed a team and destroyed everyone like Demolition for a solid year. But that would require a team staying together for more than 6 weeks so nope.
ReplyDeleteFuck me I don't even understand WHY Vince has such an aversion to tag teams nowadays.
Motor City Machine Gun was great also
ReplyDelete... and coincidentally... the least fat. As far as Samoans go, they're practically anorexic.
ReplyDeleteIf We're going outside WWE there's a fuck load of people I can list
ReplyDeleteI'd have rather seen Bad Influence or Greatest Generation, but Beer Money would be cool.
ReplyDeleteWho are they signed with now, anyway?
ReplyDeleteWe got the surprise Bubba showing at the Rumble, and then.... nothing. Not that a 2015 Dudley Boys reunion is going to set the world on fire or anything, but I'd gladly take them over the Ascension or New Age Outlaws.
I figured it would at least lead to a WM match vs the Ascension... but that would have been too easy.
ReplyDelete"I wouldn't go so far as to call the brother fat. I mean, he's got a weight problem. What's the n****** gonna do? He's Samoan."
ReplyDeleteThe quality of their matches against the Usos was mind boggling. Those matches had no right to be that good.
ReplyDeleteThey're like if 3 Minute Warning dropped about 50 pounds apiece and started borrowing moves from the Hardy Boyz. It's a great combination of styles.
ReplyDeleteI know that everyone loves Cesaro myself included, but The Real Americans to me are going to be this generation's Hollywood Blondes - not in terms of characters or styles or personalities - but just a really solid tag team that could have been something special if given more opportunities.
ReplyDeleteHarper actually has some indy cred so it helped they only really had to outright carry Rowan
ReplyDeleteIs the Ascension still a thing?
ReplyDeleteThey justify existing solely based on their titantron.
ReplyDeleteI was actually going to suggest Miz and Morrison. But now that you mention it, why aren't the Usos up there?
ReplyDeleteI always think of the Hart Dynasty and Cryme Tyme here. Perfectly over and effective in their tag team roles.....then they're split up, one of them is released, and the other disappears for years before being paired up with another person who makes less sense.
ReplyDeleteMiz and Morrison had potential.
ReplyDeleteSince then he kinda developed a speech impediment.
ReplyDeleteWE GOT A FLYING USO MAGGLE
ReplyDeleteDoing indie dates. They wrestled the Young Bucks in Binghamton last week.
ReplyDeleteAwesome Truth I loved also.
ReplyDeleteIdk but she was the quintessential butterface.
ReplyDeleteMiz and Morrison were great, especially when Dusty Rhodes booked ECW for a few months in the end of 2007. His writing team came up with the 15 minutes of fame concept.
ReplyDeleteThey're great wrestlers, but their characters...aren't things? Hard to really care about them, unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteCurrent tag team roster according to Wikipedia:
ReplyDeleteThe Ascension
The Usos
Los Matadores
The Lucha Dragons
The Miz and Damien Mizdow
The New Day
The Prime Time Players
Tyson Kidd and Cesaro
Perfectly decent start of a good tag division, but they keep splitting teams before it can ever turn into anything (Shield, Gold/Stardust, Wyatts) and they could use another 10 teams or so to keep things fresh.
Forever Hooligans jumps right to the top for me.
ReplyDeleteTag Team wrestling, and the IC level stuff was always my first love as a kid. I never hated Hogan like so many did, but he was never the draw to me.
ReplyDeleteThe only Tag Team division in the WWE is when they split guys up after 4 months.
ReplyDeleteThe Dudleys putting over The Ascension at Mania like the Outlaws did with the Shield last year would've been smart. The Dudleys could've helped promoted the ECW Unreleased 3 DVD coming out too
ReplyDeleteCompare to Survivor Series 1988, when there are "Hall of Fame" caliber teams all involved in one match. The period from 1987-1991 was tremendous for tag wrestling. Even the supporting cast teams like Rhythm & Blues, Bushwhackers, Killer Bees, Young Stallions were a bigger deal than the tag team champions in most the recent years.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. I loved Hogan and he's the reason I got into wrestling. But I stuck around because the WWF supporting cast was so awesome back then.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand why they were split up. By Wrestlemania 28, the tag belts didn't even rate being on the card, as the Usos (not over yet), Primo/Epico, and Kidd/Gabriel were the best they could muster. Why not just have Awesome Truth be your dominant tag team for the next year or so while you build contenders? Truth and Miz didn't end up doing anything in 2012 anyway
ReplyDeleteHell yes. Just make them scary, violent brawlers who no one can hang with. Take the time to build so contending teams for them to face.
ReplyDeleteThey really were onto something with those two as a team
ReplyDeleteas silly as it sounds their feud with Collin Delaney & Tommy Dreamer on the ECW brand was tremendous fun. I was glued to the screen for all their interaction.
ReplyDeleteHarper is an artist in the ring
ReplyDeleteThey just don't have the supporting cast to work with, because WWE cares fuck all about tag wrestling. Hell, Edge & Christian wouldn't have mattered much either if they had this level of "tag team division" to work with.
ReplyDeleteMiz & Truth agree with this sentiment
ReplyDeleteWho's Greatest Generation?
ReplyDeleteTen?!? You want twenty more roster spots just in the tag division? What do you think this is? 1997 WCW?
ReplyDeleteRoode/Aries. I think they called themselves Dirty Heels, but someone here dubbed them Greatest Generation and I liked it better.
ReplyDeleteTwo wrestlers are more expensive than one wrestler?
ReplyDeleteThey wouldn't have lasted as a team. Vince would've broken them up in four months, pushed one to the midcard and forgotten about the other.
ReplyDeleteWhich is (along with their music) utterly superb.
ReplyDeleteOne of the best in a long time.
I thought they were E.G.O
ReplyDeleteWhen I say "they" you say "suck".
ReplyDeleteDid DX ever win the belts? My pick for best team this century would have to be The Hardy's. They weren't pushed as hard as others but man they'd steal the show anyway. Well, Jeff would.
ReplyDeleteHHH/HBK did in 09
ReplyDeleteTotally agree. I enjoyed the main events, but was much more into the midcard. I loved tag team wrestling back then. I think everyone did. The pop when Demolition beat The Colossal Connection. Wow.
ReplyDeleteI have zero recollection of that. 09 is probably the most forgettable year in WWE history.
ReplyDeleteAround the time of WM23, they honestly should've started running a storyline about "holy crap, could London/Kendrick actually break Demolition's record as the longest-reigning tag champs?"
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the heck out of the Rhodes scholars. They should've held the belts for months.
ReplyDeleteE.G.O was Kaz, Daniels, and Roode.
ReplyDeleteTheir run against Jimmy Wang Yang and Shannon Moore was amazing. Very reminiscent of the Midnight Express against the Southern Boys.
ReplyDeleteYoung Bucks
ReplyDeleteForever Hooligans
The Briscoes
reDRagon
Steenerico
That had a lot more to do with Mercury's face getting annihilated by a ladder.
ReplyDeleteI only remember it as it was a part of the HBK/Taker WM26 promo (amazing), showing Shawns "downfall" and them losing the belts to Show and Miz
ReplyDeleteI haven't watched enough reDRagon, but can't argue the other three.
ReplyDeleteShow and Miz? wow. Yeah, don't remember anything to do with the tag belts.
ReplyDeleteI guess it depends on your definition of 'great'... I think WGTT was one of the last real attempts they made, that I remember anyway, at making a legit tag team to last. I'm probably forgetting a few, but I can't remember any after that point that didn't disappear in almost no time at all.
ReplyDeleteI mean, how many teams are on the Dudleys level in general? If we are talking pure WWE accomplishments, okay, a few, sure. Generally though, it's basically the Road Warriors. Maybe I'm mistaken, though, there are plenty of people on this blog who know their stuff far better than I do.
I'd have no problem with the DB coming back and kicking everyone's ass. The tag division sucks now, and while I'm sure the Ascension is talented, I just don't buy them... they seem almost packaged wrong. I feel like I'm borderline watching a Gilberg type mock of the Road Warriors.
ReplyDeleteOf course, I'd love a singles run for Bully/Bubba/Buh-Buh, just like I wanted a singles run for him in 2002 or whenever it was (minus the weird bowling vest)... jeez, I was a kid then!... I feel old. :/
I kind of imagined it as whoever debuted last. That works too, though.
ReplyDeleteRowan was holding up his end pretty well IMO. But the fact that Harper got a belt before Rowan shows who they thought the worker of the team was.
ReplyDeleteCHERRY was too fat? Seriously?
ReplyDeleteI blame John Laurinatus.
"Jericho in particular sold the Hell out of the run."
ReplyDeleteIn other news, sun to rise tomorrow. Jericho could make an upcoming blindfold match sound like a can't miss, ***** epic.
absolutely. the same could be said for a lot of teams. I mean, don't tell me Miz/Morrison, London/Kendrick, ShoMiz or MNM couldn't at least have been a lot bigger than they had been in reality.
ReplyDeleteThe Miz has a great track record regarding teams. Awesome Truth, him and Morrison as well as him and Big Show were all good.
ReplyDeleteNah. Jericho peaked back then. 2008 to 2010 he was legit best in the world.
ReplyDeleteThis made me spit out my coffee at the coffeehouse from laughing out loud. Kudos!
ReplyDeleteThey had a reunion last year at Joker's Wild against The Wolves, great match.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I will never understand why they didn't get the win and then just dominate everyone for a long time.
ReplyDelete
