QOTD #66 (Digest) - Jake the Snake Roberts in Bad Shape

I just heard from a friend out in California, that Jake the Snake Roberts is in ICU in a Las Vegas Hospital with Double Pneumonia, and his Immune system has basically shut down. Just when he appeared to turn the corner on life. My prayers go out to his family and friends.....

Honestly, that news - though in wrestling is never really a shock anymore (sadly), kind of took the wind out of my sails in regards to writing a blog....I suppose with that in mind......the QOTD is what would you say would be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Jake The Snake Roberts?

  2. DAMIEN! Only Alice Cooper is more associated with a snake.

  3. Jake v Pogo the Clown v Abby from Bloodymania. Best beyond worst match ever. Jake DDTs this 120 pound lady ref to death and drags his fat, sweaty coke fueled body over her as he leaves the ring.

  4. Damien. And DDPYoga.

  5. Prayers to his family, and I keep praying for him to truly have trusted in Him. Love you Snake man.

  9. He used to be married to my cousin. When I was a little kid, I'd write him fan letters, and when he was sober, he'd write back. Coolest thing in the world to a little five year old (or whatever), having Jake "The Snake" take the time to give a shit. Probably the reason I'm a wrestling fan at all.

  10. Jake Roberts will be fine. Because he cheats, ok? He cheats!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Locking Warrior in with those snakes. Jake put over 100 people on his way out of the WWF in late 91-92. UT piledrove him on the floor then rolled him in for the pinfall.

    ReplyDelete
  12. That face turn on Snake turned UT from Hogan's Monster of the Month to a legit long term player.

  13. Did You Know: 100% of people inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame were closer to death after the ceremony than they were before it.

Clearly the WWE Hall of Fame is hazardous to health, and should be abolished.

    ReplyDelete
  14. UT doesn't break kayfabe to confirm this but I imagine Jake taught him a lot in those few months.

  15. Drawing a goatee in silver sharpie on my kid's face in exchange for a photo with him at WrestleCon. Instead of having to pay $20 for it.

  16. WrestleCon. What a great name!

  18. 1. Ddt
    2. Savage/snake angle
    3. Hogan suggesting 90% of Jakes addict thing was a gimmick and saying those guys (including himself) are always working people

  19. That time Earthquake sat on his pet snake I felt really really bad for him.

  20. Breaking from the seriousness, it seems like 8-10 guys were the mentors for just about every 90s star. Dutch and Jake probably influenced 20-30.

    ReplyDelete
  21. He innovated a move that has become commonplace in the business. Can't do much better than that.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Then it stopped in the 90s when it became all about protecting your spot with the death of territories.

Retiring with his health, and money in the bank would probably be better.

  24. Jake slithering into the ring at rumble 92. One of the great heel runs ever.

Remember that show America's Funniest People?

It was generally not all that funny.

  29. Googling his name the first image that pops up is him with that fucked up eye. That still creeps me out a little.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I'm glad someone will finally say it instead if just complaining Savage isn't in.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Not true. All the posthumous inductees were exactly as close to death after the ceremony as they were before.

That epic promo from Tuesday in Texas. Jake was the best heel ever.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Wrestlemania VI. That promo was still one of the best I've ever seen.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yeah if Jake succumbs this bout he still goes out a winner, with that HoF speech being a beautiful piece of redemption.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Talk about a drop in quality following America's Funniest Home Videos.

    ReplyDelete
  36. HE'S GOTTA BAHCYCLE!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Jake Roberts to me epitomized getting the maximum return on every single thing you did in the ring. Every move he made mattered. His move set wasn't the largest, but his mannerisms, facial expressions, hope spots, and selling were tremendous.

For a more particular example, his DDT on the floor to Ricky Steamboat was vicious and iconic.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Tawney Kitane should have stuck to White Snake videos

  39. The WWE Hall of Fame class of 2014.
    Mean Gene: "WHO WILL SURVIVE?"

Agreed 100%. Jake was the first wrestler that ever proved to me that you don't have to do a hurricanrana to be great in the ring. Just like he said verbally, works in the ring as well. "I don't have to scream and holler, because if you hold enough power, you can speak softly and everyone will listen."

    ReplyDelete
  41. I wonder how things would've turned out if he had been given the book in 1992 or 1996, like he had been wanting. He really had a brilliant mind for the business, and it's interesting to think about what might have been, and how history might have been changed.

    ReplyDelete
  42. The WrestleMania VI "wallowing in the muck of avarice" promo. The psychology. The '96 gimmick leading to Austin's brainstorm.

    ReplyDelete
  43. This happens a lot with recovering addicts, I find. It's like their bodies are so dependent on drugs that they shut down without them only a few years after getting clean.

My first Jake memory will be meeting his grouchy self at Calgary Comic Expo a couple years ago. He was funny, joke-screaming at everyone and playing it up. I told him I hated him as a kid because he fought the Macho Man, who was my fave, and he hollered "I figured you were a Macho BITCH!" I have a great picture of him and me where he's flipping off my brother, who's taking the photo.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I will always remember him DDTing Steamboat on the concrete floor. It was the realest thing I ever saw as a young fan. My first real "holy shit" moment.

    You're a dickhead.

    ReplyDelete
  46. You couldn't retire with Money In The Bank. The temptation to cash it in for a title shot would be too great.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Your cousin is Cheryl Roberts?

    ReplyDelete
  48. You mean John Cena spent years learning to do a hurricanrana for nothing?

    ReplyDelete
  49. If I'd be the first to do that? Sure, why not. Nice little trivia/footnote to have.

    ReplyDelete
  50. "Sir, we keep getting orders to let the virus win!"

    ReplyDelete
  51. LOL...I was thinking' Wait...when did Roberts appear on the show?'

    ReplyDelete
  52. I loved Jake talking about that on his documentary feature.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I'll always remember the great promo at WrestleMania VI that left Gene Okerlund speechless and his awesome angle with Savage and Elizabeth in late 1991.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I loved how he just sat back and let Piper go to town on Flair with a sleeper. Just sat right back in the corner...and then walloped Piper the very second he turned his back. One of the best heel things I've ever seen.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I want him to pull through this. It's just not fair for him to go now after fighting so hard to clean up and mend fences with both people in the business and especially his family. He fought damn hard and it's just not fair that he's taken now. Being a big fan of his and a DDP Yoga follower, I've watched him fight hard to clean up and get healthier in the last year. It warmed my heart to see him make so many good changes in his life.

In the last year, he's looked so much healthier and happier than he ever looked in all the years I've seen him. I mean, when he came out on RAW earlier this year, you couldn't take that smile off his face with all the power in the world.

I also know that he wrecked his body, both from being a wrestler and from the lifestyle and addictions. Very few people in the business get to die old, sadly. It's one of the things I've grown to accept growing up as a fan.

But just...I just want Jake to pull through this, you know? It doesn't sound like he will, but after all that he's been through and all the hard work he's gone through in the past year. He deserves to enjoy that just a little longer, don't you think?

    ReplyDelete
  56. That last appearance on RAW was great.

I'd also like to think that at some point, an addict saw Jake in "Beyond The Mat" and decided to quit. Or after seeing Jake recover recently, decide to quit.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I seem to recall Jake saying that he's had a number of people come forward and tell him they've cleaned up or started to clean up because of watching him clean himself up. The dude's a great inspiration for others who have struggled with demons.

He's not quite to that level yet. He botches it every time.

    ReplyDelete
  59. That's great to hear.

  60. Virgil's Gimmick TableAugust 28, 2014 at 9:18 PM

The first paragraph you wrote drew so many parallels to Eddie in my mind. And I'm scared he's gonna end up the same way.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Come on Jake, pull through!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Or maybe a teetotaler saw Jake and decided to start using.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I suppose it would be harsh of me to wish Jake would just choke on his own vomit one night and spare us all ever watching him ruin his life or the lives of the people that care about him ever again, but at the rate he's going he's probably not far off.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Not a fan?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Scott Keith wasn't back in 1999

    ReplyDelete
  66. 1. Trust me. And all the savage stuff
    2. The feud with Rude
    3. Feud with Andre
    4. Spin the wheel make the deal w/Sting
    5. His feud with Lawler in 1996.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Being arguably the best promo in wrestling history.

The feud with Savage, which was the first real 'adult' wrestling storyline my young mind had seen. His performance at Tuesday in Texas was probably about as loathsome as a wrestling character can get without becoming cartoonish. That's still legitimately uncomfortable to watch even today.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Does it have to be his own vomit? Would any vomit suffice?

    ReplyDelete
  69. Yup. I'm not really in touch with that side of the family, and we never close or anything, but as a kid it was super cool of her to pass my letters onto Jake.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Hope he gets well soon. Pneumonia is hell. I just was in the hospital with it a few weeks ago and I'm still not back to 100% and having it at Jake's age is probably even worse.

    ReplyDelete
  71. If I'm being honest, the fact that he made it as long as he did. Drugs and his demons should have killed Jake years ago. I'm happy he got his redemption, and of course I'm going to remember his great career, but the first thing I'm going to think of is going to be how he lasted a lot longer than he should have.

  72. Scott Hall and Lita might be getting nervous.
