Wrestlemania 2000 review

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvcRxwOp_tQ

Yay Joe Gagne reviews!  In some ways WM2000 was better than No Mercy, like the speed of the game itself.  Still, No Mercy remains the alpha and omega of the AKI series for me.

  1. Some say Matt Hardy is a made up person.

  2. I don't think it's humanly possible to calculate the number of hours I spent playing these AKI wrestling games as a kid. Man, some days what I wouldn't give to have that kind of free time again. My buddy and I used to joke that we could put on a great match in our sleep using any one of these games.

For the record, No Mercy is probably my favorite all, too, but damn that slowdown when more than 2 wrestlers were on screen.

  3. No Mercy's slowdown was cut down significantly if you turned off the in-game music. In one on one matches it wasn't really noticeable, it generally would only come up with 4 guys in the ring.

I love that these reviews don't tell me anything I don't already know about these games and yet I get giddy like a school kid when they come up. He mentioned having done one for Warzone though and I didn't see it on there. FWIW I enjoyed Warzone, even though its control system was about as intuitive as landing a spaceship.

  4. I liked Warzone too. The CAW was awesome, and while the controls were kind of goofy they let you have a ton of different moves to use. It was either that or the Nitro/Thunder series on the PS1, and Nitro and Thunder sucked ass.

  5. I always thought No Mercy ran better with the N64 expansion RAM pack also.

I'll always remember smashing my thumbs trying to escape the cage match against Jeff Jarrett during the career mode of WM2000.  I loved that game - still remember the day it came out (was in college).  We had a LOT of time to play.

  6. WM2000 didn't erase your saved data, so that's one edge right there.

  7.  Matt Hardy is all around us.  Literally. .

  8.  Heh that glitch pissed me off.  And this was the days before downloading patches so I had to literally mail them my cartridge and wait for the replacement.

  9. All these years later I'd still rather play No Mercy or Wrestlemania over any of the Smackdown games. Classics.

  10. WM2000 and No Mercy - heck even WCW/nWo Revenge have MORE grapples than the games today.  Unreal really.

  11.  After the first shipment wave of those cartridges they fixed that. A glitched one from the first wave was a hot ticket though, because you could do hacks on them easy with a Game Shark.

  12. Much better rosters, too.

  13. Add me to the list that liked "Warzone" - I thought it was a fun arcade-style button-masher. The sequels went too far with the button-combinations for moves, though, they were pretty much unplayable.

I always thought "Warzone" felt faster and had better graphics than the sequels, too, though that may just be me.

[When I say "sequels", I mean both "Attitude" and "ECW: Hardcore Revolution". I did love the backgrounds in "ECW", though.]

  14. How I wish to play a wrestling game like this again with an online mode. I can't understand how this series never continued but somehow the Smackdown series got insanely popular, despite only one really good game out of the bunch (ironically, the one with Brock Lesnar on the cover).

  15. Attitude was the game I was thinking of with the sweet CAW. It's hard to keep track with all the wrestling games out there.

  16. Yeah, I never quite got that, either- Smackdown had a bit more "Flash", but was way worse overall. Were the full-on season modes better?
