Putting aside the inevitability that Vince is going to have Brock lose to HHH at summerslam. Wouldn't a more interesting move - that works with his limited appearances - is for Heyman to tell HHH that Brock will face him at summerslam only if the Board of Directors puts Brock in the MITB match with Cena/Big Show et al. Then let Cena/Show take eachother out of the match (because heaven forbid they just put Brock over the entire field strong), and have Brock get the briefcase. Then he/Heyman can cut a promo saying that now that they have a guaranteed title shot there's no need for Brock to appear again until he cashes in and wins the title and that will be at WM29.
Your views intrigue me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter. You could also have Brock call Cena a chicken until he puts the briefcase up in a match, ala Edge-Kennedy, and then Brock beats him to get his win back and gets the briefcase. But you're right, giving Brock the case would be a GREAT idea, because it makes his eventual return worth double as far as importance. Plus you know the champion would be shitting in his pants waiting to see if Brock shows up and cashes in.
if there was ever an idea to salvage the wasted opportunity of brock lesnars return, this is it.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry for being too lazy to look it up, but does anyone remember the specifics of Brock's deal? How many appearances is he contracted for? And does taping an interview at his home count as an appearance? And are matches/appearances the same thing or is there a seperate limit on matches?
ReplyDeleteI might break something if Brock jobs to Triple H but it does seem inevitable.
ReplyDeleteI loved Heyman describing it as being a mercy killing and not a match.
I think it was 8 matches. Which is like 625k per match. Not sure how many tv spots though
ReplyDeleteI wonder how far down the card brock will have to go to get a w? Or will he job every match?
ReplyDeleteJesse Baker would book Brock vs. Miz at Mania for the strap
ReplyDeleteI hope they book him to beat the shit out of Zack Ryder at least once.
ReplyDeleteI thought the stip that only former WWE champions are in the Raw MitB telegraphed that somebody not currently in the match is going to swoop in & win.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit, I'd probably mark out if it was Triple H, if just for teh nterwebz exploding.
You forgot the Punk and Cena heel turns, and the Dark Knight comparison.
ReplyDeleteOnly Vince McMahon would spend this much money and harm his product for the sake of a personal vendetta. I wonder if he's ever considered seeing a shrink?
ReplyDeleteAnd shoehorning Kevin Nash into the whole thing.
ReplyDelete8 PPVs and 1 or 2 Raw appearances to promote the PPVs that he is on.
ReplyDeleteI still say Brock goes over at Summerslam. HHH is a lot of things but he isn't stupid, right?
ReplyDeleteVince in a psychiatrist's office? Now that is a three hour show worth watching.
ReplyDeleteI had my doubts about HHH putting Undertaker over three times at Wrestlemania and he proved me wrong. But he has his reputation for a reason. I don't think it as nearly as a sure thing as many do but I put the chances at 50/50.
ReplyDeleteWho else could be added at this point, then? Jericho, Lesnar, Miz (not happening)? Did Mysterio ever have the WWE or only the world? I'm too lazy to look this up. haha
ReplyDeleteUmmm If Jesse Baker didnt book Kane into that mix, then its a FAIL.
ReplyDeleteYeah. Can you imagine the fear a champion could convey worrying that Brock was going to pop out any minute and destroy him. Bryan, especially, would be exceptional in that role, I think.
ReplyDeleteSummerFest is HHHs best ppv.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget someone paying someone else to do their dirty work.
ReplyDeleteWhen HHH went over guys, it always benefited him. Going over Brock doesn't benefit him at all, same with going over the Undertaker. That's why I think he lays down at Summerslam.
ReplyDelete^^^^
ReplyDeleteThis guy gets it.
Plus it works on several levels because the smarts know he has limited dates but the marks dont, plus vince could offer more money for a couple of dates.
ReplyDeletedoesnt matter he is the champ, cena drives the house show business, so he only has to be on tv live via satellite.
its a good booking call, but sadly... wont happen.
PS- does anyone on the blog think that bryan walks out with the wwe title at mitb? i just wanna know what the concensus is regarding if bryan walks out or aj swerve.
cuz i dont think he walks out champ. he might win, but he doesnt walk out.
but i dont think any raw heel could win mitb and cena wouldnt cash in like a heel so im thinking either bryan jobs or something fishy happens.
I think Cena wins the briefcase, Punk wins the title match, and Cena challenges him RVD-style for Summerslam.
ReplyDeleteI don't think they book Cena to do the cheap cash-in immediatly following the title match. It doesn't fit with his character, and they can always do that with the other briefcase.
My prediction for Summerslam: Brock wins the match via a referee stoppage or some shit like that. I'd predict him breaking HHH's arm with his new finisher, causing the ref to end the match, but they already ran that angle so it'd feel repetitive. Bottom line, HHH doesn't go over.
ReplyDeleteI defended the decision to have Cena go over at ER (and still do), but it really would be stupid to have Brock go 0/2. He'll win, they'll put in a way for HHH to save some face, and people will bitch they didn't book a squash.
I think Cena walks out champ after cashing in on the winner of the main event (WWE title as the main event, what???). And I'm leaning toward Bryan winning via AJ swerve on Punk. I don't think she'd be involved in Cena cashing in, but who the fuck knows at this point.
ReplyDeleteMysterio had the WWE title for about an hour just a few months ago. He beat Miz in a tournament final in the first hour of RAW and lost it to Cena in the second hour.
ReplyDeleteThat's a given.
ReplyDeleteBelieve it or not that was almost a year ago.
ReplyDeleteYou're right. I think the injustice of Rey dropping it so quickly is still fresh in my mind so that's why I said "a few months ago."
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't put it past HHH to do such a thing. This is the guy that booked himself over a guy (Punk) who was the hottest act wrestling had seen in years.
ReplyDeleteOn a related note..good god Heyman is a fantastic heel manager. I mean he always was but he has not lost his touch. I know it's a show and I STILL wanted to punch him in the fact last night. Please pair him with someone else after the Lesner run is over.
ReplyDeleteI agree with all of this. The ref stoppage makes a lot of sense, particularly since they are pushing this as a "fight" rather than a match.
ReplyDeleteI don't think number of matches matter... but I think it was 26-28 appearances (doesn't matter if he works or not). If he had to travel anywhere, that counts as an appearance. So he's down to around 19-20 dates now... and they don't want to run into the same thing they did with Goldberg... where he's out of dates, so won't show up to build to his own WM match.
ReplyDeleteBrock needs to beat HHH, then show up to the MITB ladder match, with Heyman on the mic, saying that as a former champion, he's eligible. Brock wins the match, and they spend the next six months, getting the crowd to shit themselves by playing Brock's music at random times when the champ is in the ring.
ReplyDeleteTriple H has a LONG history of getting himself involved in the hottest act... no matter how shortsighted. See; Eugene.
ReplyDeleteIf the reported figures are accurate, it's not really an enormous risk they're taking. We've all heard the numbers that top guys can pull down for big PPV main events: high six figures, sometimes seven.
ReplyDeleteSome quick Googling shows an estimated 251K buys for Extreme Rules, and that the five-year average of the previous five April PPVs was 194K (with a range of 182K to 216K). That's nearly $3 million more in PPV revenue over the 5-year average, or if you just want to look at last year's total, still nearly $2 million more.
Maybe there's something I'm missing, but I've read some articles talking about it being a disappointing figure, comparing it to Brock's UFC PPV numbers. Which is a pointless comparison, because whether or not they're going to turn a profit on Brock has nothing to do with his UFC numbers. They're not stupid enough to think they were going to match those numbers (I don't think; if they were, Brock could've commanded at least double what he got).
I say all this realizing I could be totally wrong. But if the numbers we've all heard are true, aren't they already up, like, a million bucks on this investment after his first match?
Yeah I think they started planting the seeds for Punk/Cena at SummerSlam last night.
ReplyDeleteHappy to see them go in that direction, I remember saying I wanted that as the title match at SummerSlam a few weeks ago, but didn't think they would go in that direction.
Thanks, this was my question -- i've been a reader since the stone age (i may be older than scott) and for some reason finally opted to send something in. it just seemed like an intriguing way to handle the previous cena loss, the limited appearances, and works with the heyman gamesmanship/outsmarting others.
ReplyDeleteI hate to say it, but when Punk made the tease of him and Cena going at it again, the crowd went mild.
ReplyDeleteI just can't see Brock going over HHH under any circumstance. They're not going to tarnish the legacy of the guy who "would die for this business" for the guy who disrespected it by deciding it wasn't for him and leaving without putting over everyone on his way out because he "owed the business". If it were Orton, or even Cena, I'd say it's 50/50 whether they'd let Brock go over but at this point I'm not sure they're going to put him over anyone (outside of Kofi Kingston) and I highly doubt if they do it'll be HHH.
ReplyDeleteI saw HHH/Brock is just HHH/Brock, building up a feud for HHH to win. Then sometime in the fall they might get serious about building Brock for whatever he's going to do at Wrestlemania.
He needs to be the GM on one of the RAWs coming up
ReplyDeleteIt was kind of a lame crowd in general last night, though.
ReplyDeleteThe thing with Cena is that they portray whatever he does as being right and honorable. And Cena the character does to. So I could see him cashing in on Bryan and seeing nothing wrong with it because Bryan's a big meanie so he deserved it.
ReplyDeleteIt was kind of a lame show so, one causes the other.
ReplyDeleteThe MITB winner's music being played like that would be hilarious and awesome at the same time.
ReplyDeleteWow...I'm a Miz fan and I watched that show and I completely forgot about that.
ReplyDeleteA stable of Heyman talent would be epic. Any heels that have at times seemed vicious but need rehabbing, and need help on the mic. Swagger, McIntyre, Mason Ryan, even Tensai. Wouldn't make any of those guys great wrestlers but it'd help them get more over when they were Heyman's personal attack dogs.
