Wrestlers Refusing To Break Character

http://www.cracked.com/article_20029_5-insane-true-tales-wrestlers-refusing-to-break-character.html

Just before a bunch of people e-mail this to me, since I check Cracked every morning anyway.  Although the Samoans story reads as bullshit just because the attribution is Hogan's autobiography, but the rest is pretty spot-on.

  1. My only nitpick is that the George "The Animal" Steele story wasn't so much him not breaking character as him just refusing to acknowledge that he was a wrestler to all the folks back home. It did make me remember that Saturday morning show featuring Lyle Alzedo,  "Learning the Ropes," where he's a high school principal who is a masked wrestler by night.

  2.  I'm assuming you only know about that show from WrestleCrap. At least, I HOPE you do.

  3. Ultramantis Black is pretty much the king of kayfabe these days, constantly cutting about the Lehigh Valley going about his business still masked.

  4. Ummm, of course. I totally didn't watch that show every Saturday morning. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

  5. That Nikita Koloff story was crazy.

This is really missing from today's product.  I guess Undertaker still keeps his character a bit, not appearing at the Hall of Fame and such.

  7. Konnan talked in his most recent podcast about Macho going into the hotel bar in his wrestling gear: "what's he going to do? Cut a promo?" - funny stuff... (also his interpretation of "jungle love": 'you'll take it and like it' is brilliant...)

  8.  You're right about that. And maybe because of that, I'd kill to hear Taker's real thoughts on his career, the big angles, and his locker room role. But this gimmick and his natural stoicism has built this impenetrable aura.  I'm not sure if we'll ever get that definitive DVD documentary or memoir/book.

  9. Just like I totally didn't watch it every Friday night before Checking It Out with the guy from Get Smart (Don Adams)?

  10.  Another "Learning the Ropes" fan. YES YES YES! You have to love the Dr. Death was the guy who did all of the Masked Maniac wrestling scenes for Alzedo.

  11. I heard sometimes Scott hall will drink the occasional beer when out in public so as to keep in character in case any marks recognise him.
