Plans Change

Hey Scott, once again keep up to good work! Been a fan for almost a year and still check your site daily looking for more interesting insights into the business. If you could answer, I have another question for you. Recently I read a rumour that, in 2008, Christian was supposed to be revealed as the guy behind all the attacks and incidents J. Hardy was suffering, but since the rumour was already out, WWE decided to change mid-course and go with M. Hardy, instead. For what you know, is this - by any way, shape or form - close to be true? Did WWE really changed mind mid-course because they thought Christian wouldn't be a surprise anymore ('cause the fans guessed it)?

That is indeed the story, yes. More's the pity because an updated Edge & Christian v. Matt & Jeff Hardy double ladder match at Wrestlemania would have been balls out super-duper awesome, of that I have no doubt.  Matt v. Jeff was less so.  It wasn't even a particularly well-kept secret leading up to the show, and Matt's turn rendered the entire storyline senseless.  And the end result was that Edge got to drop yet another belt to Super Cena at Wrestlemania.

Another follow-up question. In the same lines of this, I read that the winner for the 2012 royal rumble was supposed to be Jericho, but since the fans were already into it, WWE decided to once again change the plans and go with Sheamus, instead. Again, do you think/know if this is true? Because, honestly, I think it's ridiculous to change the winner of royal rumble of 2012 based on the fact that the fans believe that Jericho is going to win. No one was built as a real potential winner for the rumble more than Jericho, who would've the fans go for? Jericho had all the momentum of his return, of course everyone was going to "buy" his win!

While Jericho winning would have made the most sense and was talked about as a possibility, it turns out that Sheamus was the guy all along, planned out long before the match.  So no, that one was just armchair booking on our part.

Comments

  1. That Matt Hardy heel run was god awful. He had the worst ring gear of all time too. Like if you gave some indy geek an unlimited budget and told him he could design anything he wanted.

    ReplyDelete
  2. What's funny about Vince's notoriety for changing plans is that one time it was insanely obvious, they didn't change it. Of course I'm talking about the ending to Cena/Johnny Ace.

Even Ray Charles saw Big Show coming in and costing Cena the match.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Some fucking emo bullshit that only made sense in his deranged mind.

  4. What did Matt Hardy boast on the way to the electric chair?

    MATT HARDY WILL NOT FRY!

  5. "Like if you gave some indy geek an unlimited budget and told him he could design anything he wanted."

How is that different from what actually happened?

    ReplyDelete
  6. You're right. But I meant that usually WWE has people to stop these things from happening.

  13. So we went from a potentially awesome big return angle/push for Christian... too "It's, it's Christian" said by Todd Grisham as he randomly just turns up on the WWE's minnow show at the time. I swear Vince hates this guy.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Does anyone remember the nicknames he tried giving himself? The only that sticks in my mind is The Dark Cloud, but I know there were others that were equally ridiculous. It was worse than the infamous nickname list that was offered to Steve Austin.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think I've blocked most of them from my memory because it reads like bad anime fanfic.

    ReplyDelete
  16. What did Matt Hardy boast when seeing a "Help Wanted" sign?

    SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK IT!

    ReplyDelete
  28. It's like Punk's epic title reign coming to an end! There is a new era upon us.

    ReplyDelete
  29. jobber's reign was more like one of Cena's endless title runs.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Ever since I've joined the blog he's been the top commenter. This is nuts!

    ReplyDelete
  31. But the question is will he go out like Hogan did at WrestleMania 6 and hand over the title respectfully or will he go Y2J with it and nutshot you?

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm fully expecting to wake up tomorrow and see that he post whored his way back to the top. I have a feeling we will be 50/50'ing this thing.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Should make for an interesting few days on the Blog. The Rumble live thread should prove interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Thank you for starting a pointless pun thread to get me over the top. You can be my Jose Lothario.

    ReplyDelete
  35. i googled that mess and cannot find it. care to enlighten, please?

    ReplyDelete
  36. they're all horrid. I never even liked "walls of Jericho." what the hell was wrong with "the Liontamer?!"

    ReplyDelete
  37. He actually addresses that in his book. Jericho writes that Vince said the Liontamer wouldn't work because it was too close to Ken Shamrock's Lions Den and Vince said "I don't want to have too many lions running around back here"

    ReplyDelete
  38. gotcha. My understanding is that Jericho's book is a good read, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

    ReplyDelete
  39. The amount of love the Jericho idea (the one where he's #30 and the last guys in the ring before he comes out eliminate each other so he wins without saying or doing anything, keeping with the "troll" gimmick) got on this very blog was mind-boggling. This place is usually filled with anal-retentive smarks that pine for the days when titles and gimmick matches meant something (hey, I'm in the same group), and yet it seemed like a solid majority were behind the idea. And even bemoaned the missed opportunity later on when it seemed like the Jericho/Punk feud was underwhelming us. As if Jericho literally winning a title shot cause of a ping-pong ball would help add juice to that feud.
Just because something is a neat/creative idea doesn't mean it should be implemented. That booking devalues the Rumble (one of the few gimmick matches left that still means something), and doesn't make Jericho look like any more of a threat to Punk.
And any fan who thought Sheamus wasn't clearly being built up for a Rumble win more than anyone else wasn't watching Smackdown all the way back to his face turn. They were Goldberging the shit outta him through the fall/winter all the way up to the RR.
Thank you for allowing me the time and place to bitch about a booking decision that *didn't* happen 12 months ago. God I love this place.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I think if they did that finish with anybody else, everybody would shit on it. But for Jericho's character it was so perfect it outweighs any negatives.

    ReplyDelete
  41. What did Matt Hardy boast when reading out loud the famous line of the Giant from the book Jack and the Beanstalk?

    MATT HARDY WILL NOT FI!

    (clutching at straws)

    ReplyDelete
  42. Worth reading, but (especially the second one) verges really close to a heavy ego trip, taking credit for getting Cena over, along with a handful of others for example

    ReplyDelete
  43. Jobber will nest five replies to his own comment and take it back. Nothing against Jobber, has plenty of great posts, but I once a month or so there is a Raw thread that seems to exist purely to fluff his post count.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Why isn't Matt Hardy seeing any of these?

    MATT HARDY WILL NOT PRY!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Oh come ON!

Double Leg Vice of Torment is awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  46. blah. I think the finish was actually pretty good because of the decision to extend the finish sequence and do dozens of "almost eliminated"-teases.

    ReplyDelete
  47. "Jerichonium" = awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I've long been under the impression that Christian accidentally ran over Fido McMahon with his car and Vince has never forgiven him. THAT DOG WAS THE ONLY GOOD THING IN HIS LIFE!

    ReplyDelete
  49. He will make some comments, then comment on his comments an infinity until he is the top guy.

    ReplyDelete
  50. You beat me to it... but I agree.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I think you've posted more comments bitching about my comment count than actually posting anything about wrestling. Unfortunately I won't be able to respond to anything you write under this post because I only talk to trolls once.

    ReplyDelete
  52. What did Matt Hardy say when Princess Diana asked him to [insert random thing here]?

    "MATT HARDY WILL NOT, DI!"

    ReplyDelete
  53. Upvote for "plenty of great comments." Whatareyougonnado shrug for the raw thrreads.

    ReplyDelete
  54. What did matt hardy say when vince asked him to cup his balls while he did squat thrusts?
    Matt Hardy will not bi!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Guys guy guys..

what's important that Fuj doesn't have it. :P

    ReplyDelete
  56. What did Matt Hardy say when he meant to dissent but got confused on the right terminology?

    MATT HARDY WILL NOT, AYE!

    ReplyDelete
  57. I'm gonna post whore like never before at the rr live thread! If I have to be 2nd for awhile it might as well be to someone who obviously enjoys posting here as much as me. *jobber123s hogan handshake*

    ReplyDelete
  58. It's good to remember what's important.

    ReplyDelete
  59. His WCW nickname was Lionheart so that made sense. With his WWE character, calling his signature move the Liontamer doesn't make any sense.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Will I really really...ugh I'm over this troll.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Turning heel basically "unlocked" his main-event potential, like he now "held the key" to his own future.

    Or something.

    ReplyDelete
  62. One hour up and no dougie downvotes? I upvoted even though I think its joke when people shit on dave. Could we get a softer more loveable dougie in 2013?

    ReplyDelete
  63. Man you're sensitive. Sorry that legit observations bother you so much.

I loved the idea of a double elimantion before #30 comes out then Troll Jericho comes out and just runs around. Would of been such a unique idea

  65. HowmuchdoesthisguyweighJanuary 24, 2013 at 8:42 AM

Loved the random Christian return on theory but it came off flat. It should of been bigger. He could of been a star when he returned instead he literally returned at the same mid card level as when he left

    ReplyDelete
  66. What did Matt Hardy boast when he refused a Canadian's request?

    MATT HARDY WILL NOT, GUY!

    ReplyDelete
  67. And his gut. I think that's when Fat Hardy made his debut.

    ReplyDelete
  68. anyone have any idea if/when jericho may be returning?

    ReplyDelete
  69. ahh i remeber the glory days (6 months ago) when you, mr. chin were the top poster.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I think the top poster by the end of the rumble should have an all expenses paid trip to Saskatoon (or wherever in the canadian prairie Scott lives). Exciting stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  71. obviously didnt see mondays thread were cult was copying and pasting some of his posts that he made earlier in the episode

    ReplyDelete
  72. First champ of the .net era THANK YOU.

    ReplyDelete
  73. That one is my favorite! Priceless.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Both of his books are great. The second one has a good deal of Fozzy in it though.

    ReplyDelete
  75. What did Matt Hardy say when he was asked if he was going to watch the latest Ring Of Honor IPPV?

    MATT HARDY WILL NOT BUY!

    ReplyDelete
  76. I get what you mean but I think with the Cena thing he was kind of being tongue in cheek. I did get tired of how when he described matches he'd always say "We constructed a match with so many twists and turns that the crowd would be on their feet the entire time"

    ReplyDelete
  77. I know they're much different, and the question remains, WHAT WAS WRONG WITH IT? I never liked the fact that they had him switch to a Boston Crab & change the name. The Liontamer looks much more effective to me, since nobody really pulls back on the Crab anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  78. and also, no one laid claim to his knee-to-the-back Crab variation

    ReplyDelete
  79. still don't like the decision, since they continued to call his 2nd rope springboard moonsault the LIONSAULT.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I'd have to re-read that part but I REALLY hope he meant it tongue in cheek. From what I remember he kind of played it as "Now I know Cena's Superman and would have launched no matter what BUUUUUUUUT bla bla bla" so kind of passively aggressively taking credit.

Though, yeah, pretty much the same grains of salt any autobiography would carry, fun road stories, some good insights into WCW/WWE, just don't take the whole thing as gospel.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I still don't quite get why Jericho winning made the most sense. I mean, if the plan was always Jericho/Punk for the WWE Championship and Sheamus/Bryan for the WHC, then obviously one had to lose the Rumble but still manage to get the WM title shot. So why does Jericho make more sense than Sheamus? I'd actually go out and say that Sheamus made MORE sense (although it is a less popular option).

First off, Sheamus won the WHC in a dominant fashion. Going into that domination by winning the Rumble just gives his push more momentum. Additionally, Jericho failed to win the title at WrestleMania. Before Sheamus, the past four Rumble winners have lost at WrestleMania. Going five in a row would have risked the event losing its credibility.

    ReplyDelete
  82. But why I don't get is why people keep saying Jericho was the most logical choice. How was he pushed any more than anybody else?

    ReplyDelete
  83. lol... post whores...

    ReplyDelete
  84. Oh you are adorable.

But if I want it... I will take it because I have literally nothing to do all but collect a paycheck.

But whether I stay in the top 5, slip out, or never post again.... my presence is always felt.
