ROH TV 4-20-13

Kevin Steen starts us off. Crowd chants “Thank you Kevin” and “Mr. Wrestling”, but before he can get any words out Steve Corino shows up through the crowd. Corino says that the mission is still intact even though Steen lost the title, Steen says that now that Cornette is gone he doesn’t want to kill ROH anymore and all he cares about is getting the title back. The rest of S.C.U.M. makes their way out through the crowd. Steen: “There’s one part of your plan I can’t get behind” (points at Matt Hardy) “and it’s this motherfucker!” Corino totally flips out about that (even referring to Hardy as “Jesus”) and he decides that it’s best that they go their separate ways. S.C.U.M. advances on Steen, and I’m sure you can see where this is going. And so can Steen, who gives Corino 2 choices: let him just walk away, or jump him and start something they’ll all regret. Corino says that choice #1 isn’t an option, so Steen attacks Hardy and quickly becomes the victim of a 6-on-1 beatdown that ends with a Twist of Fate from Hardy. And FINALLY, there’s your face turn.

Roderick Strong vs. Mike Bennett (w/Brutal Bob): No Maria tonight, which isn’t going to help this crappy crowd make any more noise (though at least the camera will stay focused on the match). Mike Mondo is on commentary, and while he’s not Truth Martini awful he’s pretty bad. Strong starts by working the arm and he hits a missile dropkick for 2, the kickout sends him to the outside. Strong pulls Bennett out and they brawl on the outside, they end up near the commentators and Bennett gets in Mondo’s face, but nothing comes out of it. After some more brawling they finally get back in the ring and Bennett hits a spinebuster. Mondo: “Don’t get in my grill, I’m from Long Island and I’ll beat your fucking ass!” Man, they’re playing it pretty loose with the TV-PG rating tonight. Bennett hits a back elbow for 2 and grabs a sleeper. Strong gets loose and chops away after a victory roll attempt, he gets a dropkick but runs into a boot on a blind charge. Bennett charges in but gets dumped to the outside, Strong follows with a dropkick through the ropes and they brawl on the floor some more. Bennett tries to whip Strong into Mondo but Strong puts on the brakes and Bennett ends up accidentally spearing Mondo into the guardrail. Strong drops Bennett back-first on the edge of the ring and rolls him back in for 2, jumping knee and a backbreaker gets 2. He goes for the Stronghold but can’t hook it in, both guys throw punches and Strong tries for the double-knee backbreaker, Bennett gets loose and hits a spear for 2. Brutal Bob tries to distract the ref but Mondo takes him out, snaps Bennett on the top rope, and Strong wins it with the double-knee backbreaker at 7:39. Mondo attacks both guys after the match and the stooges come out to break it up. **1/2, match was fine, commentary sucked.

Jorge Santi vs. TaDarius Thomas: S.C.U.M. is back out for a beatdown and the match is thrown out at 1:36. Shame too, the little bit they got to do was pretty decent.

Corino runs his mouth some more, and that brings out Nigel McGuiness. Nigel brings out Jay Lethal and Michael Elgin as Corino keeps referring to himself as God. Corino wants one of his guys (his “spiritual son”, in other words, Hardy) to get a title shot, Nigel says that “None of you wankers deserves a shot”. This whole segment goes on FOREVER, but eventually leads to a match at Border Wars, if S.C.U.M. wins Matt Hardy gets a title shot (you’ve got to be fucking kidding me…) and Corino becomes the new commentator, if Lethal & Elgin win S.C.U.M. has to leave ROH for good.

Inside ROH: Jay Briscoe cuts a promo, but the only words I can decipher are “Kevin Steen”, “Adam Cole” and “Toronto”. ACH and Mark Briscoe add their thoughts about the main event tonight, Mark wants ACH to win (he faces the winner at Border Wars) because Taven probably caught a disease from Martini.

ROH TV Title: ACH vs. Matt Taven (C) (w/ Truth Martini & Scarlet Bordeaux): Mark Briscoe is on commentary. ACH earned this title shot by winning a proving ground match at the show where Charlie Haas got shitcanned. They start with the usual chain wrestling, ACH busts out a headscissors and dropkicks Taven while he’s caught up in the ropes. Taven comes back with a spinkick but he ends up on the floor, ACH hits a baseball slide and Air Jordan as we go to break.

We return with Taven missing a twisting springboard senton, ACH is up with clotheslines. Taven bails and ACH hits a dive through the ropes, back in he gets a crossbody from the top for2. Martini pulls down the top rope as ACH is trying to bounce off them, but he lands on his feet and grabs Martini, only to eat a baseball slide from Taven. Taven puts ACH’s legs on the apron and hits a wicked neckbreaker, ACH just barely beats the count back in. DDT attempt from Taven is reversed into a rollup, ACH tries for the bearhug DDT but it’s blocked and he gets dropped face first on the top turnbuckle. Taven goes up top but gets nailed with a kick and a top rope rana, frog splash gets 2. Bordeaux distracts the ref, Martini trips up ACH as he’s coming off the ropes and Taven hits his Playmaker-like move to retain at 6:42 aired. **, a bit too short (maybe if Corino hadn’t ran his mouth for 15 minutes they could have got more time) but otherwise it was OK.

Good show this week, as the wrestling was fine and they’re finally starting to move the S.C.U.M. angle along. Next week: nothing was announced, so expect some impromptu S.C.U.M. matches.

Comments

  1. If you wanted to see a much better show featuring Kevin Steen and Matt Hardy last night, you guessed it, you shoulda been watching 2CW. they are headed toward #3 company in the country, mark my words.

  2. I think you're reaching on the number three promotion thing, but it was a pretty fun show. I'm glad you mentioned it over here, as I may have forgotten about it otherwise.

    ReplyDelete
  3. They use some of the same top stars as ROH plus a wider range of ex_WWE guys and have a wider variety of styles in their matches that can appeal to everyone. And decent production values. ROH on the other hand is looking unhealthier by the day.

  4. I liked the opening segment, I didn't like the fact that some people tried to help Kevin. (Even if it was just refs and such.) After all the crap he's done, it'd make more sense for him to be a "man without a country".

I didn't miss Bennett. Not at all. And I don't miss Maria, either.

Did something happen to Caleb Seltzer? (Aside from the on air reason that Corino kicked his ass (and if I got my ass kicked by that never-has-been I wouldn't show my face either))

And can we get Truth some pants? I did not need to know his religion.

  5. The opening segment was fine, it just should have been done about 6 weeks ago. And the stooges trying to make the save was so unnecessary that I didn't even bother to mention it.

I don't think Bennett's own mother missed him. Maria is fine as hell, but whenever she's at ringside the camera just focuses on her ass. And while it's a great ass it's not why I'm watching the show.

I think Seltzer was only supposed to a be a temporary replacement to begin with. He was reportedly going to be replaced by Adam Pearce at Final Battle, but Pearce didn't show. I don't see why Nigel couldn't stay on commentary. Shit, Vince was the actual authority figure and he was still able to do commentary.

Can we get Truth a new job, outside of wrestling?

    ReplyDelete
  6. I think the mixed tag ran long and they had to dive headfirst into their big spots (they had a hardcore match last year that was kind of big for both guys and they had to try to top it). It popped the crowd good but I wanted more from it. Also, from what I've seen Isis Ephex is a good mat worker in non-hardcore stuff, but he is like a create-a-wrestler come to life with his weirdo name and outfits.

    ReplyDelete
  7. How are the pay-offs?

    ReplyDelete
  8. I think Truth would be a great mime.

Y'know, something that doesn't involve talking.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Yep, Matt Hardy is your new ROH champ at Best in the World.

    ReplyDelete
  10. If that happens I'm done with ROH. And you know what, you're probably right.

    ReplyDelete
  11. DEAR GOD, NO. If they want SCUM to have the ROH title, put it on Rhett, put it on Rhino, fuck, put it on the King of Old, NOT ON HARDY.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Fuck is with the downvotes? I mean, I missed the PPV (and I have been sick and wouldn't have been into it anyway) and I disagree with your assessment of 2CW becoming the #3 promotion. But I don't see the problem with a man expressing a well-informed opinion about his hometown company. Hate from the drug-related threads, maybe?

    ReplyDelete
  13. People probably disagreed with his assertion of it being the #3 promotion.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I disagreed with it too (ROH will always be #3 or higher as long as they have the Sinclair money behind them), but I didn't downvote it.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Isn't the point of the downvote to express disagreement?

    ReplyDelete
  16. I think Jimmy Jacobs would be a pretty good pick.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Sure, but that was just such a begin comment... Like if I got bombed with downvotes because I said something like "the Colorado Avalanche will win the Stanley Cup in 2014", which is far more likely to happen than 2CW ever becoming the #3 promotion (and the Avalanche SUCK, as much as I'm a fan). Maybe I'm just reading too much into it.

  18. In theory, but only if they start booking him really strong. I don't like the fact that Adam Cole is getting the title shot at the PPV (as much as I like him), because he's won... what, 2 matches on TV or PPV since Glory By Honor back in October? ROH seems to be getting into the 50/50 booking idea almost. Like, what the fuck did Jay Briscoe ever do to deserve a title shot? He's a lifelong tag guy who lost at the show before Supercard of Honor. The only guys that have been booked strongly over the last year are Steen and Michael Elgin.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I already don't bother with current ROH now although I am checking out their past stuff like Summer of Punk, Joe's title reign, Age of the Fall and so on. But that wlll eventually run out and I'm back to completely not caring. Oh and I'm about to lose Border Wars 2012 because for some stupid reason you only keep in house iPPVs for a year and THEN YOU LOOSE THEM. How the fuck do they think that's a good idea?

    ReplyDelete
  20. See now if Hardy does win the title Elgin would be perfect to dethrone him at Final Battle and end SCUM at the biggest show of the year but could ROH survive a 6 month Matt Hardy reign? And doesn't Elgin already get another title shot after SOH? What sense would it make for him to wait 8 months before cashing in?

    ReplyDelete
  21. As far as I know there's no "cashing in" in ROH, Elgin either gets his title match at PPV after Border Wars or the TV taping in Toronto the night after Border Wars. But no, ROH can't survive a 6 day Hardy reign, much less a 6 month one. But it's not yet set in stone that Hardy gets the title shot when S.C.U.M. wins that match (and they will win, of course), just implied. I'd honestly give Compton the title match at that show and have Steen/Hardy at the same show, maybe even in a cage match. Steen wins, Hardy can fuck off back to North Carolina.

  22. So I just found out I'm going to be at a Q&A with Jim Cornette next month in Nashville. Any suggestions on what to ask him?

    ReplyDelete
  23. His take on the RoH deal.

Thoughts on Punk and Bryan (don't think he's ever said anything about them).

Did he expect John Cena to be "THE MAN".

    ReplyDelete
  24. RoH has never been about strong/consistent booking.

I mean, Roderick is on a losing streak angle...and they job Bennett to him?

Seriously though, how many matches did Punk actually win in RoH? How many people care?

    ReplyDelete
  25. I downvoted because it felt...Evly-ish? I mean, I knock RoH all the time. But I don't plug my local indy and say Indy X>RoH.

It wasn't the sentiment behind the post as much as the way it was presented and the lack of detail going into it.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Honestly I think he might just scream out NEXT QUESTION if anyone brings up ROH.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Matt isn't good, but ROH's booking of him with Corino's verbal blow jobs has been perfect. I don't have a single issue with Hardys character arc thus far

    ReplyDelete
  28. The way I understand it, everyone that's won the ROH title has faced Jay for the title eventually. It's some sort of rite of passage, I guess. This is just the only time he's actually won the belt.

In the final analysis, it doesn't really matter that Jay's champ. It's half "thanks for being so damn loyal to ROH", half "we need a face champ to lose the title to SCUM" (and dear GOD not to fucking Hardy, I'd rather Bennett be champ)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Its been my honest opinion for a while that ROH is unhealthy and unsustainable the way they are going. The last year or so has been brutal for them, and that puts stress on a structure that wasn't all that strong to begin with. 2CW is nowhere near third yet but in my opinion they are more suited to step into that role than Chikara, dgusa/evolve, PWG, CZW, or anyone else because they are less niche-y.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I dunno, the shine hasn't worn out on the Briscoes, and if they continue to get guys like ACH, I think they can last.

It's true that they haven't had a total package (i.e. great talker who can work) in a while.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yeah but for every ACH, someone else is getting the Sami Calihans, the Chuck Taylors, the Johnny Garganos, and the Drake Youngers, etc. ROH is lucky to share Eddie Kingston these days. They just aren't the destination for top indie talent anymore. Any love I've had for ROH has been based on the talent that works there, because their product has always had faults and has never really fixed them. And now the talent they have isn't really as good as the talent they used to have. And hell, I've seen the Briscoes, Steen, Jacobs, Ciampa, Bennett, Edwards, and even Nigel wrestle for 2CW, so its not like 49& even has the exclusive market. The only thing I can see breathing any life back into ROH

    ReplyDelete
  32. He isn't all that big anymore, either. He seems to have lost a lot of that paunch he had in TNA.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Why aren't the drawing the big names? I mean, they have TV and a PPV audience.

Why can 2CW get talent that RoH can't? Does 2CW have more money? Cause they're running in the same area. Is it heat with RoH management?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Biggest in terms of star-quality.

I know that Matt's a heel but the hate he receives from Nigel is kinda....off-putting. Sure his matches kinda suck. But so did Funk's RoH matches, and he was cheered.

I dunno, I'm always bothered by heels doing a disrespect angle...and then the faces proceed to disrespect the heel. It's about the ego of the heel, not about actual offense.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Partially because a lot of people are loyal to Sapolsky and won't work for ROH, partially because ROH moved to Baltimore and a lot of the indie talent is situated in the NY area. Plus ROH usually wants people to work more than one-off shows and a lot of guys would rather travel.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Gabe Sapolsky.

Booker for RoH during their hottest period.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Wasn't he the guy that was tight with Feinstein? I always thought that was the real reason he got cut loose; they weren't sure exactly how close they were, and the last thing any company needs is two different child molesting scandals.

    ReplyDelete
  38. He was close to Feinstein, but I'm pretty sure he isn't an ephebophile.

I heard he got dropped cause he wasn't making Cary enough money.
