I watched this last night when they posted it and, honestly, I thought the Raw match was much better. This match just kind of meanders and lacks direction.
Danielson is great, of course, but Black would get much better.
If they have a rematch and reference the Small Package finish by having Seth win with God's Last Gift, the match gets two bonus stars for a possible total of seven.
Check out their match from ROH on HDNET episode 6. It's a 20 minute draw and is just a great match. But Black really, REALLY improved after his time in NXT.
I really liked the story in last nights match. There was a real feeling of equals trying to outsmart each other, and I agree with what you said about direction. I like that WWE kind of forced Daniel Bryan to be as efficient as possible and now he's adding stuff back in, but making it mean more. The German suplexes, the ranna, the curbstomp, the deathlock elbows, and the chancery are tthings he busts out only when they advance what he's doing.
Like the best out there, he uses imposed limitations as an opportunity.
Bryan's catch-wrestling was on fire in this match. He can envision the match two or three spots ahead, as seen by his hold-for-hold, move-for-move transitions throughout the match.
I thought the match had a story and it built up to the crescendo (albeit the finish coming off week because nobody thought Danielson had a snowball chance of winning with that submission). But yeah, Black was trying to prove himself by knocking off Danielson. Not the most original story to be told, but I thought they told it well - especially how frustrated Black was becoming because he couldn't put Bryan away.
It's funny you brought disjointed match, because I finally watched Jamie Nobel (James Gibson) vs Danielson, and that's the exact thought I had after that match. It was like three completely different matches packaged into one. The match lacked progression as every previous spot felt irrelevant to where they were going. Just a weird match that you'd assume would be great.
I always enjoy watching guys like Punk and Bryan(and to a lesser extent, Cesaro) in WWE, due to their movesets being big enough that they can pull new stuff out whenever they feel like it.
Why isn't Bryan Danielson who really is DANIEL BRYAN! Chanting NO! NO! NO!? I hate when the indy's change a character. GAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!

ReplyDeleteYou know, in Aberdeen Washington, Daniel Bryan was known as Mr. Small Package.

Nice to see these guys graduate from workers to Workers, though Tyler Black had awesome ring attire.
