But who are two people who had fantastic chemistry that really had absolutely no right to?
Most recently I'd have to say Henry vs Big Show. I mean, who wasn't just absolutely dreading those matches?
Also, I wouldn't say that Cena & Punk had no right to great chemistry, but who thought they'd end up amongst the greatest of all time. They're in Flair/Steamboat territory if you ask me. Hell, they were the only good thing about The Hangover III.
Steiner vs Goldberg from Fall Brawl 2000, and their following cage match on Nitro fit in as well. I mean, you wouldn't expect these two to have good matches with anyone, let alone each other.

haha I watched that movie and told my friend next to me "that was the match of the year so far" and got a blank stare back.
ReplyDeleteI think we've had this talk a few times before, and Batista/Taker always gets mentioned., and for good reason. Every single one of their matches were great IMO (and I can't see anyone calling them less than "good"). Off the top of my head I believe they had 4 (Mania, Backlash, Cyber Sunday, SSeries), so it's not like it's too small a sample size.
ReplyDeleteCome on now, how are we supposed to use *this* topic to bash Triple H?
ReplyDelete-*****
Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle had tremendous chemistry at the Royal Rumble, putting Triple H's efforts to shame.
ReplyDeleteBATISTA AND UNDERTAKERRRRR
ReplyDeleteGoldberg and DDP.
ReplyDeleteHere's a random one. Rikishi and Val Venis
ReplyDeleteDANIEL BRYAN AND KANE
ReplyDeleteOld school: Dino Bravo and Hacksaw Jim Duggan.
ReplyDeleteHollywood Hogan & The Giant.
ReplyDelete"Also, I wouldn't say that Cena & Punk had no right to great chemistry, but who thought they'd end up amongst the greatest of all time."
ReplyDeleteLifting my opinions? Smart. ;)
Maybe it was just me but I thought Batista and UT were way better together then I expected. Also, Goldberg and Steiner as you mentioned.
ReplyDeleteBatista and Undertaker were awesome.
ReplyDeleteWhen were Cena and Punk in the Hangover? Seriously I have no memory of them being in it.
ReplyDeleteGood one.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Their SS match and WM26 match were both very good imo. The 2 matches after WM26 blew, but that was just part of the Cena ego show
ReplyDeleteI was going to ask the same thing, though I don't go to those kinds of movies...
ReplyDeleteKane and Albert
ReplyDeleteWarrior & Savage
ReplyDeleteBad ones?
ReplyDeleteWell yeah, though that's not what I meant.
ReplyDeleteComedies in general just don't do much for me... and I especially don't want to pay $10 a ticket for one... a lot of the drunk humor is lost on me as well... like I just don't see the humor in people getting so hammered that they do a bunch of crazy shit and then forget about it...
Lex Luger & Brian Pillman
ReplyDeleteSting and Vader
Cena and Edge - arguably better even than Cena and PunkTriple H and Brooklyn Brawler
ReplyDeleteCena and Eged - arguably better than Cena and Punk.
ReplyDeleteCena / Edge
ReplyDeleteMelissa McCarthy was watching a Cena/Punk-match when the Wolfpack want into the gold store.
ReplyDeleteWarrior was running on fear of Rude beating him into a puddle, a powerful drug.
ReplyDeleteAs mentioned, DDP and Goldberg - it just worked. LT and Bam Bam may be the ultimate, though.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah. The fat bitch from Mike and Molly. No wonder I don't remember the match, I tried to block out the scenes with her in it.
ReplyDeleteBatista and Undertaker immediately comes to mind.
ReplyDeleteRandy Orton and Kane
Hulk Hogan and Harley Race (seriously, go track down their SNME match)
On the flip side, there are also guys who were awesome that for whatever reason sucked in the ring together - Kurt Angle and Triple H.
More flip sides of not bad, but built up too much in my mind before hand: Punk/Bryan's WWE work and Punk/Jericho
ReplyDeleteHow on Earth did I forget Taker & Batista. That should be top of the list. Everytime they got in the ring it was **** or better.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I began my review of Hangover Part III saying that a hangover is when you have a great time, and then pay for it. We've been paying for The Hangover ever since part II.
ReplyDeleteHulk Hogan and Dr. D David Shultz. See if you can find their match that was on the first Hulkamania VHS. Awesome brawl.
ReplyDeleteOrton/Christian, AJ Styles/Abyss
ReplyDeleteSo you're emotionless then?
ReplyDeleteEvolution-era Ric Flair and The Rock.
ReplyDeleteKing Kong Bundy and S.D. Jones
ReplyDeleteHere's a different slant on the question; what tag team had no business having the chemistry they had? The obvious one is Rockabilly and Jesse James.
ReplyDeleteGoldberg and Sid had some pretty good matches, when it seemed impossible to get a good match out of Sid at that point.
ReplyDeleteEddie/JBL had some good matches - everyone knew Eddie brought the goods, but JBL seemed motivated as well.
One more from the archives - Steiners and Doom. They have some really good battles back then (once Doom took off the masks).
I'm usually against going to the theater for comedies as well. I prefer to pay the big bucks these days for what should be a visual cinematic experience (Avengers, MOS, those types). Occasionally though, if a movie is reviewed well enough and a bunch of buddies want to hit it, I'll go to a comedy. I went to "This Is The End" and had an awesome experience. This looked like dreck though.
ReplyDeleteI loved the first Hangover, but a huge part of the punchline was finding out what happened to them the night before. That joke ran its course and did not need sequels. Unfortunately, the 2nd one made so much god-damned money, that they made another one.

ReplyDeleteIs that the chick that's in that new movie with Sandra Bullock? She's terrible.
ReplyDeleteSomething something Bret Hart... I dunno, where's that ScreamHartkiller guy?
ReplyDeleteName comes from a drunken sing-along with a friend a couple years ago where we replaced all the words to Louis Armstrong's "What A Wonderful World" with random shit. "Cabs painted yellow" was just one of those things. Also, since we're reminiscing, Vince promised me the title, and I invented coming out to entrance music.
ReplyDeleteMiz/Morrison vs Yang/Moore was a surprisingly awesome series. Should have been marked by a brief darkhorse title change. The crowd would have exploded.
ReplyDeleteUhhhh, he was the opposite of what people expected the Lesnar series to be. The matches sucked, and(at least the Summerslam match) was expected to be great.
ReplyDeleteShe was damn funny in Bridesmaids.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to ask the reverse question, great workers and who they had bad chemistry with. For example, Shawn, Flair and Bret: who could they not get at least a watchable match out of?
ReplyDeleteAlthough I've heard its next to impossible to have a bad match with Savage I was pleasantly surprised how good his macth was with DDP (and Doink for that matter.)
ReplyDeleteWhen the average Three Stooges skit is better put together than your product then you know there is an issue.
ReplyDeleteHey! The Three Stooges ruled and had impeccable timing. In fact, what you just said is an insult to the Stooges.
ReplyDeleteThe long lost Bret Hart vs El Dandy match shows that as good as Bret was, he wasn't up to El Dandy's level. I believe El Dandy got fed up with Bret using a formula, when El Dandy believes the best wrestlers adapt to the crowd.
ReplyDeleteDaniels and Kazarian.
ReplyDeleteApparently respect for THIS BUSINESS doesn't include cardio.
ReplyDeleteIf your biggest problem with the Hangover 3 is Melissa McCarthy I don't know what to tell you.
ReplyDeleteYou know who I can't stand? Kristen Wiig. I do not get her appeal as a comedienne at all. She is the worst.
ReplyDeleteI was always surprised how well Undertaker and Batista clicked in their 2007 feud. I figured we'd get a slow and stuff Mania battle but instead it was the best match on the card and their rematches were great too, somehow they just brought out the best in each other for a fun program.
ReplyDeletewho are you to doubt El Dandy?
ReplyDeleteI agree 99.9%. I thought she was good in Bridesmaids. Hate her in everything else she's ever done. She always play the "I'm annoying, so I'm funny" card, which only makes her annoying.
ReplyDeleteDude. Grow up.
ReplyDeleteRespect for THIS BUSINESS doesn't include selling an arm injury either. At least until it gets "broken"
ReplyDeleteShawn and Perfect
ReplyDeleteFlair and... nobody
Bret dogged it tons of times from 95-97, and all of his WCW run, so you could probably find alot there.
Flair and Dusty, but nobody blames Flair for that.
ReplyDeleteBam Bam Bigelow was always more potential than execution, but I remember heel Barry Windham finding a pretty good match in him.
ReplyDelete
