Sunday Matinee - July 21st, 2013

Greetings.

Alright, on today's Matinee I'd like to talk about what film you were most excited about coming out.

There have been quite a few in my life. Rambo 4, Rocky Balboa, and Punisher: War Zone.

Two films tie at number one. First up, Expendables 2, because I was so insanely excited to finally see Van Damme back on the big screen. My anticipation was rewarded with the film being fantastic, and Van Damme getting a ton of praise for his performance. Praise he's been deserving since Double Impact. The other, well, it was in the making for 10 years. Freddy vs Jason. Since I was a child I was looking forward to this film. I had a babysitter who dug both series and would draw pictures for me of them fighting. Then when I saw Jason Goes To Hell they had the greatest final scene ever with Freddy's glove. It stayed in developmental hell for 10 years, with just as many script drafts. Then it finally happened. I went to the first showing in my town and just couldn't believe what I was about to see. Not to mention they did a hell of a job on the film, Kane Hodder not being involved and the Freeberg character not-withstanding. It's great to look forward to something so much, and have it be rewarded.

How say you?

Comments

  1. Easily the first Batman.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Adam West?

    You're old.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Transformers (2007)

I could not wait for that movie.

Seeing OPtimus Prime transform for the first time in that movie made me feel like I was 8 years old watching MTMTE.

I jumped out my seat and yelled "THATS MY NIGGA!"

    ReplyDelete
  4. Why I oughtta.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Seriously though, 89?

Cuz that was awesome for its time.

    ReplyDelete
  6. YankeesHoganTripleHFanJuly 21, 2013 at 9:15 AM

I have to put Rocky Balboa on the list only because about a half hour or so before I was going to go watch it in theaters a co-worker and frenemy called me up and asked me to cover for her and I basically flipped out and asked her why it was so hard for her to just let me watch Rocky in peace, (little wonder why everyone though we either had hooked up or should hook up just to get it over with)

I just watched the Catching Fire trailer so I am excited for that now

But my number one has to be Major League 2. Keep in mind I LOVED the first Major League, to this day its my favorite comedy and sports movie, so my 15 year old self was super psyched, practically twitching, for the second one.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I was 12. It was like perfect storm timing wise. And it was the most promotion for a movie ever at that point. Saw the first showing. Crowd was fucking jacked.

    ReplyDelete
  8. YankeesHoganTripleHFanJuly 21, 2013 at 9:24 AM

I can relate Fuj. I named my kitten Panthro, (I got a new one after the first one died) after my favorite Thundercat. I DVD'd the reboot from two years ago and if they ever came out with a Thundercats movie I would be marking out like a little kid

    ReplyDelete
  9. LOVE BOTH Major Leagues.

Cuz Im a Indians fan til death.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Im currently watching Thundercats while Im over here in Afghanistan.

Its gets deep. Im abt 20 eps in.

    ReplyDelete
  11. YankeesHoganTripleHFanJuly 21, 2013 at 9:30 AM

I'm a Yankees fan, (duh.) Major League was so awesome that I didn't even care that they lost in the end

    ReplyDelete
  12. YankeesHoganTripleHFanJuly 21, 2013 at 9:32 AM

The old version or the new one?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Im not a yankee hater, but I HATED Bernie Williams with a passion

    ReplyDelete
  14. Transformers was one of my most anticipated films. Holy shit did I come out of that movie angry.

    ReplyDelete
  15. YankeesHoganTripleHFanJuly 21, 2013 at 9:33 AM

    Bernie? Of all people? Why?

    ReplyDelete
  16. YankeesHoganTripleHFanJuly 21, 2013 at 9:34 AM

Oh good. It does get deep for an 80's cartoon. And Mum-Ra is fucking terrifying.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. And what a let down that was.

    ReplyDelete
  18. YankeesHoganTripleHFanJuly 21, 2013 at 9:36 AM

I guess. I think of Bernie killing all teams BUT the Indians, (flew out to left to end the 97 division series) Different perspective I suppose.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Now I watched it as a kid, but of course it was out of sequence.

Im watched it in order. but I can only watch like 3-4 eps at a time.

    ReplyDelete
  20. oh no... during the season Bernie would torch us.

But he would be the only one on the team hitting during the games.

    ReplyDelete
  21. The new one was really good. I hate that it got canceled. It was a nice twist on the world and characters we already knew.

    ReplyDelete
  22. YankeesHoganTripleHFanJuly 21, 2013 at 9:44 AM

Keep in mind that I was 9 but you remember the episode where Tygra went into the aging cave? I night nights where I could not sleep because it spooked me so much. Even when I took to watching Thundercats in college, (used to rush back to the dorms from class to catch the 3:00 episode. Fortunately this being college that sort of behavior was not only acceptable but encouraged) I had trouble watching that episode.

    ReplyDelete
  23. YankeesHoganTripleHFanJuly 21, 2013 at 9:46 AM

Yeah I was sad about that too although the original episodes were much better. In the new ones Lion-o was a total pussy and Tygra was a dickface. Panthro was still awesome of course, and Cheetara was still hot.

    ReplyDelete
  24. As a kid, I counted down the days to the live action Street Fighter movie in 1994. Even as a 12 year old, I realized shitty film making when I saw it, but at least we got that great "For me, it was Tuesday" line from M. Bison.

In my adult years, probably only The Dark Knight (I'm a huge Joker fan and of course wanted to see Heath's performance) and Watchmen (disappointed) were the ones I was checking daily for news on leading up to their release(s). I was really anticipating "The Master" last year, and loved it. "Fahrenheit 9/11" was another one, mainly because I hated Dubya so much. All three Toy Story films I couldn't wait to see, as well as both Kill Bill films, too.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I was 6 when that movie came out, and I saw it at a drive-in.

Seriously, for 5 years, maybe longer, that was THEE movie for my generation. Every kid had seen it, and every kid had loved it. To me, it's only gotten better.

Kevin Smith talks about that time often, and says that during that summer you couldn't turn around and not see the Bat symbol. He said it was every where, and people were even shaving it into their head.

I loved the Batman cereal. Cap'N Crunch in the shape of the Bat, how brilliant.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Man, I saw so many shitty video game adaptations in the theater as a kid.

Mario Brothers, Double Dragon, and Street Fighter. But like you said, that line from Bison is insanely cool, and a complete shame it was wasted on a film like that.

I mean, why was Sagat an old man?!

    ReplyDelete
  27. YankeesHoganTripleHFanJuly 21, 2013 at 10:07 AM

M.Bison was badass. So fucking hard to beat.

    ReplyDelete
  28. YankeesHoganTripleHFanJuly 21, 2013 at 10:09 AM

Was Megan Fox too hot or something?

    ReplyDelete
  29. The coolest thing in the world was in the video game, I think Super Turbo Street Fighter II Championship Edition, was when you were about to fight Bison, but the screen goes black, it comes back and Akuma has broken Bison's neck. Then it's go time and Akuma destroys you in a second.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Lord of the Rings movies

    ReplyDelete
  31. Someone's going to say it and some will not admit it now, but the most anticipated movie for me (and based on box office, a whole lotta other people) was SW: Phantom Menace.

    ReplyDelete
  32. YankeesHoganTripleHFanJuly 21, 2013 at 10:19 AM

Never played that version but I can relate...the first time I fought Tyson I was like "what the fuck just happened?" Kind of like Bryan vs Sheamus except way shorter.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Totally psyched for phantom menace. And avengers. And machete. But they still weren't my #1.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Oh, I'm sure it wasn't everyone, but it is for a bunch of people in our generation.

Funny enough, if I went with my top 5, Back to the Future 2 would be on the list.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I've had a few, though the results weren't so great most of the time.

-I was stoked for Superman Returns upon the first trailer that had John Williams' score. I wound up still enjoying it a lot and still do to this day (certainly more than Man of Steel), but I know many hated it, even people who went with me that opening night.

-While I still really like Hellboy, I got myself TOO hyped up to see it. I loved the comics so much that the movie was all I talked about for months. I even went as far as buying the Art of Hellboy Movie book, which had the entire script as well. And sadly, despite my best intentions not to read it and be spoiled, I couldn't help but flip through it to look at the pretty artwork...and kept catching snippets of story. So by the time I saw the movie, I knew everything that was going to happen and wound up being disappointed just because I wasn't surprised by anything. It's probably because of this that I like Hellboy 2 more, even though the first is better in terms of overall quality.

-The Muppets I was crazy stoked for and wound up seeing it 3 times in theatres.
    -Ditto The Avengers.

-Finally, there was one movie that came out in the mid-late 90s - while I was in High School - that I told my girlfriend at the time we HAD to get there ridiculously early. I said it was going to be sold out hours ahead and it would be packed. We got there two hours early. By the time the movie started, only half the theatre had filled.

Turns out Spawn wasn't the big blockbuster I'd assumed.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oh, definitely. Hell, I'll even admit I loved at the time. And honestly still to this day don't think it's THAT bad. Not as good as the original trilogy, but not the horrendous crime against humanity that others have made it out to be.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Ghostbusters III. Still waiting..........

    ReplyDelete
  38. Same. I went to see it opening night with friends. They came out of it loving it and I was like, "REALLY? That was a piece of shit."

    ReplyDelete
  39. You think Hellboy is better than Hellboy 2? Couldn't disagree more.

    ReplyDelete
  40. In terms of overall story and character development, yeah. The second is more FUN, to be sure.

    ReplyDelete
  41. ...........Tintin

    ReplyDelete
  42. Tintin was awesome. Nothing to be ashamed of.

    ReplyDelete
  43. >because I was so insanely excited to finally see Van Damme back on the big screen. My anticipation was rewarded with the film being fantastic, and Van Damme getting a ton of praise for his performance.

    What about JCVD?

    ReplyDelete
  44. South Park the movie.

    ReplyDelete
  45. If I want to look at Megan Fox I'll just go on the internet. What I really did want was coherent action sequences and not terrible comedy.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Oh man, me too. I was a massive fan of Todd & Spawn as a kid. One of my favorite memories is when I told all my friends that I was going to obtain Spawn #1-10, and they said no way it would happen. Keep in mind, I was only 10-11, and this was 1994-1995 during the height of Spawn's popularity. I did it, and man I was so proud. I still have'em to this day, even though they aren't worth shit. Anyway, I went to that movie and saw the very first screening. Goddamn did it suck major ass. I saw a bit of it the other day, and ugh...that cape looked so shitty. What a terrible film. Basically stalled Michael Jai White's career for 10 years. Well, that and Universal Soldier: The Return.

    ReplyDelete
  47. After the debacle of the prequels, I had already lost all faith on anything originating from the mind of George Lucas, so I was extremely skeptical going in and as you said, it was a let down even then.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I think what made that movie even more hyped in most fans eyes was that there had already been an awesone HBO animated series with Spawn that ruled. People, me included, were thinking you were getting THAT in live action form.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Have you seen The People vs George Lucas? It's a fantastic documentary. Anyway, there's a part in there detailing people's reactions to the upcoming Phantom Menace, and how people waited in line just to see the trailer. Well, one guy's reaction is "God himself must be so upset when he saw this, because he knew he couldn't create something that awesome". And then the full movie came out...

    ReplyDelete
  50. That was a great cartoon. I still don't know how Todd allowed that version of the film to be made. Or at least the cape...God, I'll never get over how shitty it looked. It'd be like if the Bat symbol on Batman's chest was a pyramid or something.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I just don't understand why people didn't like the film. I honestly believe those who didn't like it wouldn't have liked the first three if they came out right now. The things people say they hated were just nit-picky stuff that was all over the original trilogy.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Some things were nit picky, but there were problems all over the film as far as tone and consistency with the originals. Go watch the redlettermedia.com review by Mr. Plinkett, then we can talk.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Yeah, that is a great documentary. At the same time, that kind of extreme "fan boy", kinda scares me. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  54. The funny thing? I wasn't even a huge Spawn fan. I was just excited to see a new comic book movie, which at the time were rare (or, you know, Batman & Robin) and I wanted to support that.

I mean, I'd read some of the Spawn comics, but I wasn't crazy about the excessive violence and gore. Even back then, I still preferred my superheroes to act more like heroes than murdering crazies.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I've seen that review before.

The thing is, people no longer use their imaginations. All people want to do is pick things apart, and refuse to suspend their disbelief. That's what the films are, escapism. The original Raiders was created as an homage to the adventure serials of the 30's & 40's. I find it so hilarious that people cried, pissed, and moaned about nuking the fridge, which was classic Indy, but say nothing of the raft ordeal from the beginning of Temple, or the mine-cart chase, or the fact the Ark melted people's faces in Raiders, or that a cup moving past a certain point in a building caused it all to collapse in Last Crusade.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I'm a huge Star Wars fan, and I just don't get it. Who cares if they change things so long as I can always watch my preferred versions? Do I think it's stupid that Vader yells "NO!" when he kills the Emperor now? Sure do. That's why I didn't buy the blu-rays and just watch my DVDs.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Yeah, Spawn came around just before Blade started the Golden Age, which we're still in.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Escapism is not the problem with Indy IV, it's inconsistency, killer ants, flying monkeys, too many lead characters, terrible mystery, the pussification of Indy, etc, etc. It's just a terrible, jumbled mess of a film and reflective of how many re-writes the film had. I think it went through 5 or 6 writers before there was a script that was approved. Then, there was this whole Crystal Skull storyline that Lucas forced upon Spielberg.

If you like it, that's ok, but don't try to tell the majority of Indy fans that they're wrong for not liking it. I saw all 3 originals on opening weekend as a kid in the theater. I love Indy and I'm willing to tolerate mostly anything. Indy 4 stunk imo.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Well, see, that's kind of the problem. Lucas has actively sought to eliminate any way of getting your hands on the original cuts. So, watching the original theatrical releases on digital form is near impossible. I can see why people would get pissed about that.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I'm fairly pumped about Only God Forgives at the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  61. My expectations have been tampered a bit. I've been hearing mostly negative noise about the film.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Iron Man. I had been waiting YEARS for that.

    ReplyDelete
  63. If you were a kid at that time and didn't own a Batman or Joker T-shirt, you were ostracized.

    ReplyDelete
  64. #1 89 Batman, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. 89 Batman was a different animal, a pop culture phenomenon. Batman Begins only because I was excited for Batman to be back, then the final scene with the Joker card made me psyched for years for the next one. Every trailer, every viral game, I was engrossed in.

#2 Return of the Jedi. If you were a kid at that time, people were lined up around the block for tickets to that one.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Gotta hope that Disney helps us out on that one.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I'm assuming you have all the young indys.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Well, I didn't get into Star Wars until my early 20's. So, the editions I grew up with were the altered ones from 1997. I've seen the original cuts, and funny thing is, I much prefer the ones from 1997. I guess it just depends on how you're first exposed to things.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Anyone excited for The Wolverine?

    ReplyDelete
  69. I don't think anyone is wrong for not liking it. The only time I think someone is wrong in regards to taste is if they like any of those Date/Epic/Disaster movies.

I dug the killer ants. They exist, they're a real thing. It fit with the films. The first one had snakes, the 3rd had rats, now we get ants. Flying monkeys? You mean on the vines? That was like, 20 seconds out of the whole film. Too many lead characters? There were 4. Ocean's 11 had 11 lead characters and that worked out just fine. Terrible mystery? C'mon, no way. It was great. I'd always been into the crystal skull deal, and although it wasn't the same I loved seeing Indy trace the path back to the City of Gold. Indy's a pussy? How? He's beating on Russians and firing a rocket launcher. Still seems like a bad-ass to me.

    Which one is your fav?

    ReplyDelete
  70. I don't know if they did it in the States (I assume they would have), but the original versions were released on DVD in the UK a few years back.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Yeah, they did that here too. However, they didn't do any revamping to it. It didn't get any upgrades picture or sound wise. So, the fanboys still complained. I mean, the laser disc versions have been available online for download for years. They need to quit whining.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I think Street Fighter is brilliant; it's so ludicrously camp it's like the 90s version of Flash Gordon.

Along with that you've got the 'I'm not gonna go home...I'm gonna get in boat, go up that river and kick that sonofabitch Bison so hard, the next Bison vannabe is gonna feel it'.
Followed immediately by 'Colonel Guile, have you lost your mind?' 'No. You've lost your balls!'
    Fantastic.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I am. I always loved the stories of Logan in Japan, and it looks like they're doing them justice. The buzz on the film is that it's fantastic, and blows Origins out of the water. Not that it would be very hard to do.

    ReplyDelete
  74. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryJuly 21, 2013 at 1:14 PM

Since I'm a huge fucking nerd for Harry Potter, the first movie and the last.

The Dark Knight; even since the first images and then subsequent trailers of that mesmerizing Ledger role, I could not wait. I think I camped out for eight hours for that one, ditto for The Deathly Hallows Pt 2.

Also up there are TDKR, The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Watchmen, and The Phantom Menace.

    ReplyDelete
  75. And that's not true.

42 on metacritic is not fantastic buzz

    ReplyDelete
  76. No. Did you see the first one?

    ReplyDelete
  77. Yea, the negative buzz and the fact that it's being released by Radius-TWC is a horrible sign, but this movie cannot suck. I refuse to accept it.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I was presently surprised by Transformers.
I'm a huge TF fan; I have almost every issue of the UK originals (finally picked up #1 in a second hand shop a few years back) and still collect the odd figure today. It's been a big part of my life for almost 30 years.
Going into a midnight preview, I had very low expectations of what to expect from Bay. I still hate many of the character designs - but I thought it was really quite decent.
The two sequels though....I've never bothered re-watching 'Revenge' - I hated it. And we gave up on 'Dark' after about half an hour on a second viewing.
    They are abysmal.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Probably Rocky Balboa. I was so nervous and excited that I had an upset stomach in the hours leading up to the film.

Oh, and Dirty Work, of course. Plus all the Harry Potter films.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Sorry. Crystal Skull sucked. Indy was too old, the action scenes had too much CGI, the Russians were dull, The Beef was annoying, Marion was too old, Ray Winstone was annoying....it just didn't work.
I think Raiders is probably the 'best' Indy film, but my favourite is Last Crusade. I can't stand 'Temple of Doom'.

    ReplyDelete
  81. 69% on rotten tomatoes.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I did. It was okay, not a lot of depth to it. This one looks way better.

    ReplyDelete
  83. metacritic is a much better barometer than Rotten Tomatoes. I expect that RT number to decline sharply.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I hated the first one and have no interest in seeing anything else Wolverine related. Even though I really like James Mangold.

    ReplyDelete
  85. No way. Rottentomatoes is better.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Dodgeball. No idea why but I was stoked to see that movie

    ReplyDelete
  87. I'll watch that one, but I'm too big a Ryan Gosling fan to be excited that he's basically playing Driver in two different movies this year.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I bought one of those type books for Sin City, because I got a little obsessed during that time period. Waste of 30 bucks, but I still have the damn thing.

And regardless of how bad the movie was, there were some good tunes on the Spawn soundtrack

    ReplyDelete
  89. No WAY. Rotten Tomatoes just tells you if a critic likes or dislikes a movie, while metacritic tells you how good a movie is. Plus, metacritic is more selective about the critics it uses. Great site.

    ReplyDelete
  90. That's why rt is better. Casts a wider net. Gives you a more broad opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Yea, but some of those opinions aren't really worth having. With its 0-100 setting, meta really hammers home if a positively reviewed movie at RT is good or great

    ReplyDelete
  92. Every opinion is worth having. I don't always agree with the critics. Especially now that Roger Ebert has joined the choir invisible.

    ReplyDelete
  93. This comment made me realize that Place Behind the Pines and Only God Forgives are actually 2 different movies. I guess the hype for the 2 has been compounded.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I gotta be in a small minority that wasn't disappointed in the Watchmen movie. Maybe its because I had only read the book just before I saw it, so I already knew about the movie and its flaws. But honestly, the only thing that really ground my gears was Snyder's terrible music choices, and the relative flatness of Ozymandias and Silk Spectre compared to the perfect casting with Nite Owl, Dr. Manhattan, The Comedian, and especially Rorschach. And in a post 9/11 world, the changed ending made a lot of sense and pjt a better point on the "God is real and he's American" thing.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I don't, but I watched them when they came out and thought it was a pretty good show. I should seek it out and re-watch them, see how they hold up.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Gosling is amazing in Place Beyond the Pines

    ReplyDelete
  97. I'm pretty sure those releases were not the original 1977, 1980 and 1983 intact editions but the special editions from 95.

Like Caliber said, the laser discs had the untouched versions, but I want my own blu or dvd not some illegal download.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Raiders. Crusade. Temple of Doom. That's the order, always will be.

    ReplyDelete
  99. I mentioned Sin City upthread, and that was a big one for me. I had just gotten a DVD player maybe a year or so before that, and that was what lead to me getting really into Tarantino's movies deeply, and later on Robert Rodriguez's movies (a little less deeply) so that was my first time since I became obsessed with QT that i'd see anything he directed in a theater (although I was close to seeing Kill Bill in theater, but I got outvoted by School of Rock). I was buying up all kinds of merchandise for that one, and I saw the first showing on the first day. Wasn't disappointed, although now I've cooled on it a lot.

I was also super hyped for Pineapple Express, since I was a huge Knocked Up/Superbad fan and a pretty major stoner at that time. Another one I saw the first night, and wasn't disappointed. And lemme tell you, I marked the fuck out in This Is The End when they did the mini-Pineapple 2.

And then one more: I was a big fan of James Ellroy's book The Black Dahlia, so I was super stoked for De Palma's adaptation of it. My local theater didn't run it, even when I caled and requested it, so I waited for it to come out on video. Man, what a letdown. Mark Wahlberg dropped out and was replaced by Aaron Eckhart, who completely mksread his character and basically played him like his Thank You For Smoking character. And Josh Hartnett is just awful and bland, and Scarlett Johanson is given nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I'm kinda meh on it, though the trailer I saw before Pacific Rim was good. I had no idea Silver Samurai was in it(Though it's obvious he would be when I thought about it)

    ReplyDelete
  101. I was super excited for Pacific Rim, and wasn't let down.

Now Phantom Menace, Jurassic Park:Lost World and TMNT 3? Holy shit, I think those three movies killed the joy-filled, un-cynical child in me.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Oh God, TMNT 3...I saw that in theaters as well.

Have you ever seen the Angry Video Game Nerd's video about it? It's absolutely fantastic in describing the era, and what it was like to be a kid, and a turtle fan at the time. Then he destroys the film. It's a fantastic review.

    ReplyDelete
  103. That's a film I've been wanting to see for a while, Black Dahlia. So, thanks for saving me the trouble.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Admit it, Dougie, I'm the only reviewer you trust in this cold world of ours.

    ReplyDelete
  105. You know when they finally released the original trilogy on DVD, and it was in those box-sets that were either gold [full screen] or gray [wide screen]? Well, a few years later they released the films individually, with each DVD containing 2 discs. On the second disc of each film, was the original theatrical release, however it wasn't upgraded with surround sound, digital picture, and all that.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I love Crusade. I'm partial to it because much like Henry Jones, SR, I'm into Grail lore.

Funny enough, I didn't see any of the Indy films until I was like, 20 years old. The first one I saw was Temple of Doom, and holy shit, the beginning blew me away. It's one of the coolest, most classic, action-packed, completely ridiculous scenes of all time. I absolutely love it.

  107. I hear the DVD releases are a bit screwed up. As it goes, when the show aired each episode would be Indy from a different time in his life. On DVD they put all the times together. So one set is when he's a kid, one is a teenager, and the other a young adult. Apparently this some effects the play-back of the show.

  108. Read the book, its excellent. But the movie was atrocious. Nothing good about it beyond seeing Mia Kershner naked, which isn't exactly a rarity.

  109. I've never watched AVGN, it's on the list of nine hundred thousand things online I should watch at some point.

  110. If Nostalgia Critic is on that list, please remove it.

  111. I'm right there with you, I enjoyed Watchmen. It's not the best movie ever, but it certainly does a good job with the subject material.

  112. Wasn't that the album where every song was a collaboration between two bands/artists?

  113. I actually think the movie is underrated. But I'm a big fan of the genre.

  114. Count me in.

I ordered the sketch movie poster.

    Super badass.

  116. Yeah, alternative & metal bands mixed with electronica acts. Marilyn Manson & The Sneaker Pimps have a good one, Slayer & Atari Teenage Riot have a great one, and it was the first place I ever heard Incubus.

  118. I have to admit, SF:TM now has narm charm, mostly due to the numerous memes it inspired. Same with the USA animated series. Now, Legend of Chun-Li gets no such pass.

SF2: Movie (the anime feature from 1994-95) is still the best other-media version of the franchise. Enter Vega = badass song.

Yeah I saw them all too, as well as the Schumacher Batmen. And get this, my dad got me out of school early so we could see...The Wizard.

  119. I forgot to add the T'cats reboot in my "shows that I wish weren't cancelled".

  120. Yep, I had a lot of doubts due to the Bay backlash on the internet, but I wanted the TF's to be back in force so I wanted to like it. The first was OK (at best, in retrospect), but the sequels...nuff said. The way I see it, TF1 was Michael Bay as WWF era Vince Russo: he was filtered just enough, but you could see the cracks in the armor. From there on in, Bay = WCW Russo in that he threw all his stupid ideas to the wall to see what stuck. (Russo probably was better at making characters, actually...all the live action movies were all about Prime and Bee, and maybe Megs and the villain du jour. Everyone else had no personality or was a racial stereotype or stupid comedy character...hey maybe I was wrong about Russo NOT being like Bay!)

  121. It can't be that bad since there's no Deadpool to screw up.

  122. Seriously, he made throwing up look sexy.

  123. The fourth Indiana Jones movie (since it would be my first on the big screen), and the Avengers (in addition to most of the movies leading up to it).

    I was satisfied.

  124. The opening fight scene and credits are some of my favorite out of ANY film.

  128. I may add that you might as well rename the franchise "The Humans". Cause that's all they care about. See my other comments about Prime and Bee being the only TF's they care about. I still impress myself with my Russo analogies too ;-)

If you really want to see a happy medium between the Bay designs and more traditional ones, watch Transformers: Prime.

  129. I liked Watchmen too. And on a somewhat related note, I didn't think TDKRises was awful. Of course, the animated version of TDK*Returns* was better.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Yes, to hear that it was considered a good movie made it even better. And I had no idea about the Avengers mention at the very end, so that got me on a major high.

Too bad neither of the sequels could ever live up to that. Kind of reminds me of the Austin Powers series, the first was the only REALLY GOOD one, the others became too mainstream and relied on tropes. Were there any other movie series like that for anyone else? Where the first film was the only good one?
