> I'm not totally sure on this, but I think basically all the important I Quit matches have involved trying to get a submission by non-traditional means (Weapon based beatdowns, weapon-assisted submission holds, threats to cause severe injury via weapon attack, etc). What would be your opinion if, in a years time, Daniel Bryan and CM Punk have an I Quit match that changes it up a bit. Basically, I'd imagine it would start as a straight-up submission match for the first 20-25 minutes, then after the Yes Lock reversed to Anaconda Vice reversed to Koji Clutch reversed to MMA Powerbomb from Guard spot or whatever epic reversal sequence they come up with, they get desperate for the win and then go to the hardcore beatdown ONLY because the normal tactics haven't worked.
> What say you?
That was kind of the story of the Bret v Austin match, wasn't it? Bret couldn't win by heroic means so he turned into the thing he hated most to win.
The real question is if they're both on their game, could a Punk/Bryan "I Quit" match as described give us the first ever 7-star match?ReplyDelete
Only if HHH pedigrees both of them for a double count out as the finish.ReplyDelete
Do we have a 6 star match on record?ReplyDelete
John Cena vs. The Miz - Over the Limit 2011. The worst example of an I Quit match. Basically, it was Miz and Alex Riley putting Cena through various tortuous situations NOT involving submission moves. It was more like a bad action movie where the hero is tortured for information, and he keeps coming back with one liners about the guys mother.ReplyDelete
Technically Bret vs Austin was a submission match rather than an I Quit match, so I think what he described would be pretty new. I also don't think I've seen an I Quit match just end in a basic submission hold.ReplyDelete
The Flair-Funk I Quit match from COTC ended in the figure four, didn't it?ReplyDelete
Hm you may be right about that.ReplyDelete
Bret vs Backlund was I quit wasn't it?ReplyDelete
The only finis I have any interest in seeing in an I Quit match would be where the one guys ties the other one up and just pokes him in a particular spot on his forehead until he starts to lose his mind and has to surrender.ReplyDelete
Yes, it definitely ended in a Figure Four - but there were 'foreign objects' and outside the ring fighting leading up to that.ReplyDelete
I was once in a debate which turned into an I Quote match.ReplyDelete
I think the problem is that I Quit matches are kind of anti-climatic by default, especially if you avoid the submission angle. There's no near fall or quick count to rely on to pop the crowd.ReplyDelete
I was once on a debate team in Massachusetts. I was a Mass Debator.ReplyDelete
Then I threw on a mask and I was a Masked Mass Debator. I was in school at the time so I guess I was a class-masked mass debator.
Yeah, Steamboat/Flair had one.ReplyDelete
And one is the WWW World Heavyweight champion and Sandow cashes in his MITB case...ReplyDelete
Tickling could also work. It's a form of torture.ReplyDelete
Clash VI is 10 starsReplyDelete
There was also a Flair vs Funk vs Steamboat vs Luger fatal four way I quit match that was 9 1/2 stars on a house showReplyDelete
... and still loses.ReplyDelete
In the early stages of YouTube, I once made a series of videos as a guy called The Perverted Menace. Ski mask, cape....and pixellated private parts. I would harass all sorts of inanimate household objects. I stopped after 4 episodes because...well, shit...total viewers combined: 3. Marketing was not my strong suit.ReplyDelete
Dougie's now going to pretend that he always thought Bryan sucked too.ReplyDelete
Slaps opponent in an abdominal stretch, applies headphones and secures with duct-tape, presses play on MP3 player cued to Celine Dion's greatest hits.ReplyDelete
STEP 1: Wear mask, wave dong at lamp.ReplyDelete
STEP 2: ???
STEP 3: Profit!
Not at all. Always been a big fan.ReplyDelete
Where were you when I needed this? Internet sensation!ReplyDelete
I'm still stuck on step 1.ReplyDelete
True, but other than the knee-on-my-kneedrop on the floor, there wasn't anything that would've been out of the ordinary (like blasting the knee with a chair 7 times, or making him watch Greg Gagne matches)ReplyDelete
Hey I watched that Gagne/Brunzell vs Santana/Martel match and it was pretty good!ReplyDelete
