Daniel Bryan WAS his creation. While there was some kid who had a passing resemblance to him in the Indys, with a similar name (Bryan something or other), Daniel Bryan, the beard, the YES! chants, all of it is a bona fide VKM creation.
Yes sir. That wasn't sarcastic at all. No way, no how.
DB has admitted it was Vince's idea to act like every win was a huge deal and act like he won the Superbowl. Don't know that he came up with "Yes" but he was a huge part of why Bryan got over.
Also, I think Bryan really won Vince over when he took his firing for the Nexus angle like a man and didn't trash the company.
Its hard for me to hate Kevin Nash as much as I should when he's doing pathetic shit like a signing with snitsky at a minor league baseball game. How embarrassing
Reminds me of how someone pointed out once that Booker T wasn't really pushed as a tippy-top guy, but "KING BOOKER" was a World Champion (back when that meant a little more).
The technical skill is all his. But there is no doubt that Bryan Danielson has become a better talker with a more interesting character since joining the WWE and no one here knows how much of that is him compared to Vince/the creative team.
I'm pretty sure part of this article's already been debunked by Meltzer potentially. However, Scott is right; if Vince feels involved in your starmaking and personally invested he'll be behind you all the way. There's no other way Shawn Michaels would have ever had more than an IC title run otherwise.
It's funny that anyone would be up in arms about Vince believing this anyway; I think he does have a lot to do with the rise of many people. If you read through the autobiographies or shoot interviews with most successful WWE wrestlers, the majority think that Vince is generally a genius with a couple of notable misfires.
The optimist in me sees this as: Vince thinks Daniel Bryan is a star.
I'm a HUGE Daniel Bryan mark, but if you told me he would reach the level he has I would have been shocked. He was entertaining in ROH (how he wanted to be announced) and he could obviously connect with a crowd, but we don't know how much the WWE has worked with him as a character. Irrespective, I'm just happy he IS a star.
I think the fact that DB came out as backup for the Undertaker kinda showed how WWE thought of him. I realize he was tagging with Kane but it still made him seem big time.
Charisma-less? No, not at all. I admit I was never an ROH devotee, but I'd seen enough to know the dude could talk and had some natural charisma. But he'd never done anything approaching a persona/gimmick that could get over huge with an audience of millions. In comparison, I think Punk was a lot closer to fully formed in that regard when he arrived in WWE.

It sure was MORE a WWE creation than CM Punk was.

A genius is someone who knows how to pick himself up after each screw up and keep trying.
ReplyDeletePunks pretty similar to what he did on the indies. The Straight Edge Messiah was definitely a little different though
ReplyDeletehow?--he played the exact same straight edge savier character in his feud with Raven in ROH
ReplyDelete'if Vince feels involved in your starmaking and personally invested he'll be behind you all the way.'
ReplyDeletepotential problem tho is that in vinces mind, if he made you then he can break you
see hart, bret, as well as the burial of austin in summer '02
'Also, I think Bryan really won Vince over when he took his firing for the Nexus angle like a man and didn't trash the company.'
ReplyDeletewouldnt be surprised tho if when dby was fired, the parting words to him were 'see in you 89 days'

ReplyDeleteThe cult aspects were new.
ReplyDeleteDaniel Bryan is yet to cut a better promo in WWE than he did at ROH's 100th Show.
ReplyDeleteAnd, according to Punk's DVD, that was 100% his creation, without any input from WWE Creative.
ReplyDeleteReally, there are only a few guys who did their own thing on a regular basis, and got pushed as huge stars. Mick Foley, for one.
ReplyDeleteDaniel Bryan Danielson came up with the yes-ing I think. There was some MMA fighter he was making fun of to kind of round out Vince's idea.
ReplyDeleteBryan said he took the YES-ing from Diego Sanchez

common misconception amongst people who've never actually seen Bryan in ROH is that he was charisma-less until the WWE got him.
ReplyDeleteBy all accounts, he took good care of his money and can do things like that because he wants to, not has to.
