THREADJACK: gotta hand it to HHH, this is some pretty nice corporate backhanded compliment/heelery: https://twitter.com/TripleH/status/378527332019212288
I don't watch/follow MMA, but the surprise factor of that is awesome. I can't imagine trying to block a followup submission after being spun around like that.
If it's Japanese MMA from up until about 07 or so and something flashy happens it's probably a work.
Finding out how much of Japanese MMA was worked is like the adult version of finding out that wrestling wasn't real. You kinda knew all along and it doesn't mean you don't like it anymore but it's one of those seminal moments.
Yeah, I think I was still in denial until Jake Rossen's excellent Pride GP retrospective in 2010. And then Rampage and others flat-out admitting they were offered money to throw fights or "put on a show" only cemented it.
It does make me question some of the records and some of the bouts of even guys I love like Sakuraba. I've heard a lot of talk that Saku-Newton was worked, or at least had a paid agreement not to involve striking. I'm not sure I buy that, but it's made me question the bout, which was one of my all-time favorites for a long time. It's especially interesting since Rampage said Pride offered him money to let Saku tap him out (he said he declined and got submitted anyway).

ReplyDeleteHe's killing it. I wish he'd never turned face.
ReplyDeleteHe's just so damn good as a heel.
I love Genki, but I'm not entirely sure this isn't a work.
