Pretty sure I've featured this one before, like 99% sure, but people in that Coliseum video thread were like "OMG, Stan Hansen v. Hulk Hogan?!" and that's the universal signal for posting it again because it's pretty fucking awesome.
Two things: 1.) The black chick in the green shirt and huge doorknocker earrings at the 16 minute mark really stands out in that crowd, doesn't she? 2.) Hogan's wrestling style in Japan is almost like seeing another person. In his book he always said this is how he really wanted to wrestle but McMahon wanted him to do signature spots.
I said this the last time it was posted and I'll say it again: I love the way this match plays out, with Hogan trying to out power AND out wrestle Hansen in a bid to avoid an all out brawl and failing due to Hansen's experience.
And then it turns into the fight Hogan clearly didn't want and he takes the abslolute slimmest of windows to hit his finisher and get the hell out of Dodge.
Just found the part of Hansen's book where he mentions it... all he says is Gordy knew he was in line for a top spot in NJPW, and said, the day before the show (actually two days before, based on the next paragraph), that he wouldn't "do business" with Hogan.
I heard that this match came about because Terry Gordy didn't want to job but Hansen didn't care. Any truth to that?
ReplyDeleteDamn, I don't have Hansen's bio with me at the moment. But it's not ringing a bell, so best I can say is "Maybe?"
ReplyDeleteI remember PWI doing a write up of this match. They sold it as Hogan taking his frustration out from losing the WWF title on Hansen.
ReplyDeleteOh and just because AX BOOOOOMAAAAAAH

That is how wrestling rings should look.
ReplyDeletethat was a fun stiff battle. too bad hulk didnt wrestle like that in the states more.
ReplyDeleteOr, as Scott Hall calls it, "Hogan's Jap clothsline"

Yea, they got me. Those tricky asians. Point remains the same though at age 37.

ReplyDeleteThey sent Finkel to Japan for this?!?!? This was common? (Also, thanks, Scott!)
ReplyDeleteRic Flair, Royal Rumble 1992. I know Sid got the elimination but hey it counts Flair since he won the match
ReplyDeleteHansen was billed at 6'4. I always thought Hogan was "only" a legit 6'5 or 6'6 but they billed him at 6'8.
ReplyDeleteLULZ at anybody actually taking their frustrations out on Stan Hansen. "I'm pissed off so I'm totally gonna beat the shit out of that grizzly bear!"
ReplyDeleteHow is Hansen's book by the way?
