Good luck. I tried dumping my Coliseum Videos for less than 10 bucks each (mostly all the PPV's from 1987-1991), and not one taker. I'm still sitting on them, hoping that there's a market for 'em on eBay sometime this lifetime.
Some of Masked Man's stuff is good, but on the other hand, a lot of his insights seem way overanalyzed and skip over a lot of smarmy or behind the scenes reasons for things happening the way they do. which, ok, the House of Mouse doesn't want libel suits or columns built on innuendo and rumor, but just makes for boring columns at times
Ive been reading Simmons since he was on espn page 2, and will always be loyal to him...alot of his grantland sports/pop culture writers I dont like though. Shoemakers reads are usually good so ill dabble with the por
I think it's fine to look at things from an artistic perspective, sure it doesn't cover EVERYTHING but it's nice to get more detailed criticism (in the classic sense of the word) than "Vince is an asshole".
Masked Man's stuff suffers the same problems as Simmons and Gladwell's work: they start with a thesis and conform the facts to fit it rather than the other way around.
All my VHS I ended up just straight dumping before I moved. I was literally giving them away to anyone who wanted the collection... no takers. Pretty much anyone who was in the trading game for a bit has their copies, or have converted their VHS tapes, so it's damn near impossible.
You don't get to? I'm going to ask my friend Reality here to refute that statement.
You're arguing about how things should be, I'm talking about how things are.
Being RIGHT gives people a hit to the pleasure centers of their brain, now being right is a whole lot different from being correct. And being correct is a whole lot more difficult than being right. Now do you see the problem here?
Youtube devalued almost all old tapes, but some of those WCW events still hold value to hardcore collectors.. Even on the tape trading boards, people mainly trade digitally for MP4's and iso files. That said, I still have a vcr in the spare room just in case I feel like watching my copy of Spring Stampede 94 again some day.
How? He writes far less frequently but the content and quality hasnt really changed. He even throws in some of the exact same shit: fan mailbags, movie/sports comparison pieces, trade machine pieces, etc. While I love Simmons, lets not pretend hes writing high end analytical stuff: see Ewing Theory column.
I'd really argue that the quality has gone down. his use of pop culture references just feels forced and shoe horned, and it's kind of clear the dude needs an editor but he's gotten so high up the food chain no editor can reign him in. his tangents just feel rambling instead of insightful. I'd like to see him do a 2,000 word article that is clear and concise just to prove he still has it in him. I mean, if you still love the guy I'm not going to change that, but his whole deal just feels more and more labored to me. I used to be a big fan, now I'm just sort of a casual "eh, not doing anything." sort of fan.
Hes got his faults, his length is one of them. And will completely miss on a column every so often. I think his "normal fan guy" shtick along with his self deprecating way still makes for a good read tho most of the time
One of my favorites. For some reason I've held on to that one, wrestlemania v and wrestlefest 94. Just can't part with them. Got rid of the 100 or so other tapes I had years ago.
Not sure if insulting your potential audience is the best way to start a podcast. Started listening to it on the way to work this morning and the guys spend the first five minutes or so explaining how this won't be a podcast for 'basement dwellers', but for fans of wrestling that have kissed a girl.
Kinda turned me off it. It's like they're trying really hard to say "hey, hey, we're not NERDS like those other guys." Which is weird cause then they start talking about midget wrestling a few minutes in.
Good luck. I tried dumping off hundreds of my DVDs recently on the trader boards to no avail.
ReplyDeleteThat's Starrcade 96.
ReplyDeleteWCW was notorious for somehow screwing up their video covers by putting the wrong years on some of their releases.
Why would anyone pay over 50 bucks for a VHS tape?

ReplyDeleteI know all those words, but that sentence doesn't make any sense

ReplyDeleteIf by same problem as Simmons and Gladwell you mean the same problem as pretty much every person ever, then yeah.
ReplyDeleteyeah, and op even acknowledges that but still lists it as 97. he needs to fix that

this is why mark calloway doesnt like you
'I'm still sitting on them'
ReplyDeletethey'll hatch yet
i still use a vcr for taping stuff off 24/7 and then watching it later
ReplyDeleteI thought I was buying Starrcade 99 once and ended up with the 98 abomination instead... WHICH I ALREADY HAD.
ReplyDeleteI actually sold a box of commercial VHS tapes if WWF/WCW/ECW stuff via craigslist this year for $70.
ReplyDeleteYet my 3 blu rays for $30 (2013 Royal Rumble, 2012 best ppv matches and best of MSG) received no interest. *sigh*

German porn film.

ReplyDeleteMark Calloway was fine, but Brian Lee was screwed.
Hey Louis -- You got Survivor Series 1989 in the original case? I'll buy it from you. matt_telthorst@hotmail.com
ReplyDeletethat's a great VHS
ReplyDeleteIt's so hard to find good underarm hair.
ReplyDeleteWhy not try gong to the arts and crafts boards and ffer lots of shiny, colorful coasters for sale?
ReplyDeleteSame. I threw away literally hundred of VHS tapes when I moved across the country. No one wanted them, and I had no use for them anymore either.
ReplyDeleteWhy don't you get a DVD recorder?
ReplyDeleteno, he really doesn't. Simmon's writing has taken a nose since he started being an on air personality.
ReplyDeleteHow? He writes far less frequently but the content and quality hasnt really changed. ReplyDeleteUm, can't people just download that show?
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorites. For some reason I've held on to that one, wrestlemania v and wrestlefest 94. Just can't part with them. Got rid of the 100 or so other tapes I had years ago.
