Top 50 WWE Matches of 2000s plug

Scott,

Hope you have a happy New Year, you and family both.

My latest for Camel Clutch Blog, a subjective (and surely debatable) ranking of the best WWE matches so far this millennium.

Thanks man

This millennium is just FLYING by.

  1. That SummerSlam match is pretty overrated and I was honestly shocked that Undertaker/Shawn 1 wasn't #1.

  2. If Benoit didn't do what he did, there isn't a doubt in my mind that one of his matches would have been #1. Otherwise, great article.

  3. I agree WHOLEHEARTEDLY with #1. I have a problem with #2. That isn't even the best HHH/Michaels match of the millennium, but I have a feeling the ranker may be mixing quality with importance, and the resurgence of Michaels career was a very by deal.

  4. Can't say I've seen all of them, and the order is debatable, but it seems a pretty good list to me.

One match that I would have liked to have seen included however, was the RAW 10 man-tag from January (?) 2000. HHH/X-Pac/Benoit/Malenko/Saturn v Rock/Cactus/Rikishi/Sexay/Hotty. Admittedly it's been a while since I've seen it, but I always thought it was a super fun match in front of an electric crowd.

Shawn Michaels vs. Triple H (12/29/03)

Chris Jericho vs. Shawn Michaels (09/07/08)

Rey Mysterio/Billy Kidman vs. TWGTT (07/27/03)

    Royal Rumble Match (01/31/10)

    Edge vs. Kurt Angle (05/19/02)

  6. quality is certainly important. I wouldn't pretend Rock/Hogan is more technically sound than anything below it.

  7. I love number 2. Probably one of my favorite matches of all time. I cannot stress enough how surprising it was to see Shawn come out and actually be FUCKING SHAWN MICHAELS. I think everyone's expectations were way-low / not really set, so right about the time Shawn did his first dive over the top, you suddenly realized, oh my god, The Heart Break Kid is back.

It also made Bret Hart's comeback look maddddd weak by comparison at Wrestlemania against Vince.

  8. I can't really argue anything here. Solid list. My only subjective nit pick is I'd like to see Foley/HHH higher. Dont thinknit belings at 2 but i Think it's better then the HBK/HHH street fight.

  9. I'd switch the order of some matches but I really can't find any problem with any match on the list. I'd have to put Triple H vs. Jericho LMS and Triple H vs. Shawn from Raw in 03(both of which I noticed are in your next top 10) really high on the list. Benoit vs. Austin 5/31/01 would be up there too.

  10. Love that Punk/Ziggler match. Was excited when it was announced but it surpassed all my expectations.

  11. I was a Shawn fan from the Rocker days, so maybe it's a bit rose-tinted on my part. But at that point, I was a sour know-it-all that felt a lot of what wrestling had become was lacking. Shawn made me 11 or 12 years old again with that match.

  12. That was a rare occasion were I legit thought Shawn's back was fucked for life and was expecting him to not take many bumps. I thought he was leaving legit on a stretcher. Fantastic match.

  13. Angle vs. Benoit in the cage, Flair vs. Edge TLC, and Flair vs. Austin were all rather glaring omissions.

  14. this. I think this list is pretty good.

matches missing I might have put on there:
SummerSlam 2005: Shawn Michaels vs. Hulk Hogan
SummerSlam 2008: Edge vs. The Undertaker Hell in a Cell
One Night Stand 2006: Edge & Foley vs. Funk & Dreamer
Backlash 2009: John Cena vs. Edge
