QOTD 146: Comic Book / Graphic Novel appreciation thread!

Shut Up, I though it was a good book.
Hey lets talk about comics some more! As previously stated I'm a casual / esoteric buyer, who spent three years living with a buddy who had a MASSIVE collection of DC stuff from weird periods of time.

So I read a lot of Kyle Rayner Green Lantern, All-Star Batman & Robin (good grief!), All Star Superman (So good!), and then a lot of the prestige stuff like Watchmen, the one drawn like people ("Kingdom Come?"), The Dark Knight Returns, The Killing Joke, and then some other stuff like Wanted, and then I'd start collecting Ultimate Spider-man up until the panel where Gwen and Peter are super forlorn looking on the last panel splash page.

Also is anyone incredibly impressed by how well the Marvel Cinematic Universe is going? This thing has been going on for YEARS and the movies have been pretty good to great, with Captain America being simply incredible.

So, talk about comics / comics movies / comic documentaries, or Chasing Amy! What's good, what's cheap, what newbies like myself should check out, and in general just chat it up! Feel free to explain the digital services like comixology.

I have a second question, too - does anyone else kind of not mind the way Man of Steel ended in theory? It was shot fairly poorly but I liked the idea of the no-win scenario where Superman has to kill a dude.

Comments

  1. I'm watching old Raws.

I don't know why they have up on running up to whatever the special of the month is like they did with Wrestlemania 30. Why not show every Extreme Rules in the Sunday night time slot until we get to the new one next week?

  2. I've read too many comics to remember them all. But The Killing Joke and Dark Knight Returns will probably always be on top of my list along with The Long Halloween.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Oh, all the Loeb stuff is my favorite. I read ALL of his batman stuff and then Superman for All Seasons, too.

  4. I also really like Bendis on Ultimate Spider-man. WHAT. I said it.

The L.A. NAACP: STUPID, STUPID, STUPID. Not for pulling this one back, that was highly intelligent. No, they are stupid for giving that rancid shit an award previously. Because he's been the same racist piece of trash since day 1.

  7. I loved Ultimate Spider-man too, you're not alone!

And he's a shit owner. Let's not forget, even if he was a champ when it comes to race relations he's still the worst owner in American sports by far and away. And to think that team was once here in Buffalo...

    ReplyDelete
  9. I recently watched Chasing Amy again after loving it ~2000. It's near the top for movies that have aged badly.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I'll never be able to get behind digital comics, or e-books in general. It's the same reason I still like to get certain things on record or DVD or whatever... some art is just better when it's tangible.

As for recommendations, I can suggest Invincible (written by Robert Kirkman, it beats the shit out of the Walking Dead & I love that book too), Chew, Runaways, Y: the Last Man, Bone, I've read some Concrete books that were pretty good... some of these are all-time favorites, and only Invincible is anything like your standard superhero book.

I enjoyed All-Star Goddamn Batman & Robin, the Boy Wonder, Age 12, for the same reason I enjoy Mystery Science Theater 3000.

  11. If I was Melo, I'd be packing my bags and headed to Chicago immediately. Yeah, they're struggling now but with the defense they play and you add in Melo's scoring and hopefully a healthy Rose and you've got quite a team there.

  12. How is it that a racists ends up owning an *NBA* team? Is that irony or what?

    ReplyDelete
  13. I'm amazed at how well the MCU has gone so far.

How many bad movies will it take to mess it up though? Can they get away with one misfire? Two? Or can they just keep us this run and keep pleasing the comic audience and general movie going public?

    ReplyDelete
  14. I used to count it among my favorite movies, but every time I've tried to watch it in the last year or two I haven't even been able to finish it. I'd wager that maybe Joey Lauren Adams' voice just got to be more grating over time, but I have no problem watching Tank Girl & Lori Petty's voice is just as unbearable.

Wait, why do I have no problem watching Tank Girl?

Most of Kevin Smith's movies have aged just fine, although the first Clerks is a little rough for me to watch sometimes. It's kind of like whenever I watch the original Evil Dead in that I can recognize & appreciate what these filmmakers have accomplished with no money or experience, but good lord do the movies look like shit.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I have no idea how the general public is gonna take Guardians of the Galaxy. It seems like a lot of absurd comic-book-y stuff to ask non-fans to swallow at once.

I'm afraid that the movie that bursts the superhero film bubble is gonna be something like Days of Future Past or Spidey 2, I don't know how much longer the public is gonna keep going to see five or six superhero movies a year.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Bendis on Ultimate Spider-Man, fine. Bendis on every other book in the regular Marvel Universe? A little much.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I was always a big fan of his run on Superman/Batman, although the ending only works if you also read the "Emperor Joker" story with it.

  21. Zero hour obviously. I love seeing a major character who had been a good guy for some 50 years have something horrible happen and lose his shit destroying a bunch of good guys and trying to rewrite the entire universe the way he sees fit. Fuck them retconning it the way they did.

  24. Grant Morrison's Doom Patrol and Animal Man are required reading. Both hold up better than most of DC's pre-Vertigo mature readers books. Also check out Kirby's Fourth World, his FF and Thor runs, and his work on Kamandi. And Ditko's final Dr. Strange story, the seventeen parter, is amazing.

i quite liked both the alf and beavis & butthead adaptations. nice change of pace from the tv shows

anymore remember when marvel actually incorporated the alf annual into the "evolutionary war" storyline that year? it was the epilogue or something, and alf was chillin' out, maxin' relaxin' all cool, and all shootin some b-ball outside of the school with the high evolutionary?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yeah Guardians of the Galaxy seems like it could be a risk.

But then again I suppose how much they link it to the rest of the Universe. If it isn't much I suppose they can just ignore it and pretend it never happened.

If it heavily links to Avengers 2 and bombs they may have more of a problem.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Garth Ennis's Punisher Max run is superb,he made Frank one of the most complex characters of Marvel.Valley forge,Valley Forge and Born are still the best stories I read from comics and are part of this run.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Oddly, I wonder if that movie is there "non-comic book comic book movie" experiment. They got an INSANe director - James Gunn, it has a serious Firefly vibe to it, and it seems a little ribald in a very strange way. I'm curious how many audiences don't really pick up on it being a marvel movie.

Also I bet they all die at the end or something.

    ReplyDelete
  31. They're planning sequels,they're not gonna die.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Main event is Rock-Angle-HHH for the title.

There was also a first blood match. UT and Kane v. Haku and Rikishi.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I had big suprise checking the New 52,I had high expectations in Snyder's Batman and I thought it was okay, the surprise to me was Aquaman,he's bad ass with tons of fun supporting characters.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Racists seem to enjoy employing black people.

    ReplyDelete
  35. How many people are they giving to draw in as an individual film on it's own merits? I'd be really interested how many people who have no interest in the MCU go to see GotG.

Does it even matter if the film flops? Does it affect anything else?

    ReplyDelete
  36. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryApril 27, 2014 at 12:17 PM

I don't mind the ending to MoS, I mind that immediately jumps to an ending where no one seems to give a shit that thousands of people died.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think it does. If this movie does well, some of the lesser valued IPs like Dr. Strange or Squirrel Girl or whatnot now have real viability because the risky picture made a profit. If it bombs then it's all superheroes, all the time for Marvel, which is also fine.

    ReplyDelete
  38. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryApril 27, 2014 at 12:18 PM

Honestly, I think it's going to do at least as well as the first Thor, which was also a big departure from the more grounded Iron Man movies.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Serious question...What's the fascination with comics? If you want a:

    - character driven read
    - science fiction read
    - fiction read

there are probably so many better options out there.

I've never got them, at this point despise them, and never really them.

  40. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryApril 27, 2014 at 12:21 PM

Long interlocking stories (hey, just like wrestling), memorable characters, and gorgeous artwork

    ReplyDelete
  41. I know they've talked about sequels, but if they want to "raise the stakes" for Avengers 3 without killing off known commodities, Thanos slaughtering the Guardians would be one way to go. Would save us from a Guardians 2 Batista nostalgia run as well

    ReplyDelete
  42. There's a lot of things you can ONLY do in a visual medium where you're reading and not watching. Specifically there's an entire sequence in Watchmen the comic where a character in the moon, and the way he describes how time is Not linear and such is really only capable of being done in that way on the page in a world where you can take as much or as little time as you want reading.

I watched it once when it came out and I have particular memories of it - the only Smith movie that I can really say that about.

    Why do you hate it?

    ReplyDelete
  47. It's hard to fault them, but I still think if they were going truly long term, they'd build around every 3 avengers rebooting or new universing. I'd rather they get recasts out of the way all at once than just every now and then based on who got too expensive or sick of the part

    ReplyDelete
  48. I would love Spring football right now.

  49. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryApril 27, 2014 at 12:32 PM

I have a feeling Avengers 3 will be the end of the primary cast, esp. since just about every principal cast member is already halfway through their contracts. Post-A3, I think that's when we'll see something like Iron Man 4 with a new Stark. I'm sure if they have these films planned out for as far as they have, they have a game plan in terms of how long they need their actors for (I mean, Sebastian Stan has a NINE-movie deal).

    ReplyDelete
  50. 2028? They better not screw this up.

I thought that's what they were going to do with TWS, esp. at the climax of the movie.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Yeah, new Stark is inevitable and I know if it works, it'll work, but I'm going to be grumpy seeing NewStark interacting with any of the hold overs, would rather it's all done at once

  56. I don't expect Rose to be the same guy we've seen nut hell still be very good. With Melo as your top guy, Rose as 2nd your 2nd best guy, Noah anchoring the front line and D, amd Thibs...that's a title contender

    ReplyDelete
  57. Gotta think that's what Cap 3 will be, redemption and passing of torch....the way they've played it, don't necessarily have to kill Rogers either, just have him sick of the world and not willing to fight for the government

    ReplyDelete
  58. Rumor has it that Red Skull is coming back for Cap 3,so Steve's death can happen.

    ReplyDelete
  59. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryApril 27, 2014 at 12:38 PM

Yeah, they can go a bunch of ways with it. I loved that Cap 3 really SHOOK THINGS UP as Vince likes to say and felt like an important entry. I think the weakest things about IM3 and Thor 2 -- even though I liked them -- is that they felt too self-contained but Cap 2 felt like essential Universe watching.

Any word if they're bringing back Hugo Weaving or will they not need to because he's pretty much unmasked? I'm not really counting on the former after Weaving pretty much said that movie isn't really his kind of bag, even though the movie (and his performance) was quite good.

  63. Really enjoyed TWS. I love the characters in Thor and Iron Man, just didn't like the overall endings for either of those. Thor got too cute with the transporter in what should have been a brutal fight to the death. Didn't like any of the Pepper Extremis parts of IM 3 either

  69. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryApril 27, 2014 at 12:41 PM

Yeah I think I was just surprised that they didn't use Iron Man as the bridge to A3 considering that up to the first Avengers, the IM movies were sort of the main films and the other heroes were more or less side stories. It's nice they're spreading the plot offense around now.

    ReplyDelete
  70. But you despise EVERYTHING... what's one more thing?

I agree. Bulls can amnesty boozer and have a starting 5 of Rose/Butler/Melo/Gibson/Noah. That's a contender. Only question would be how will Rose adapt his game? He has spent his basketball career being the most explosive athlete on the court. I would be shocked if he didn't attempt to really change his game. When he does, will he still be effective?

  73. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryApril 27, 2014 at 12:42 PM

My third favorite MCU film after Iron Man and Avengers. The action was exciting (holy crap did they get creative with using the shield as a weapon), they did a great job with Rogers as a character and the story with the paranoia surrounding SHIELD was really well-done. Great stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  74. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryApril 27, 2014 at 12:44 PM

Eh, I'm kinda over the "IT'S REALLY THIS GUY" kinda stuff. I didn't even like the sequence in the climax with Natasha disguised, but I think it was because I really wanted to mark out over an old woman coming out a hoss afire.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Thor was phase one most important film due presenting Asgard and Loki, that made SHIELD do their weapons research and security programs in the Avengers.Cap 2 shows these programs in their final stages.

  78. Houston would be better, you have that and then some with that team. Plus their younger, so he wouldn't have to worry about a rebuild or not being on a contending team in 3-5 years.

  79. It's basically another episode of Smackdown, but I'm pretty sure it got the "Xtreme" moniker as nothing more than an XFL tie-in. The format of the show is basically what we have with the Extreme Rules show now: a majority of the matches have stipulations. Pretty decent show so far; had to cut it off after the Jericho/Tazz match due to another commitment, but I'll get back to it.

    ReplyDelete
