Another TV Deal Factor

Scott - it's me, Tom the Actuary.  There is another thing that effected the TV deal that I'm surprised no one has hit on.  Who else but WWE is trying to sell advertising for a TV show, while simultaneously pushing (on the air, repeatedly) an app for people to watch instead of the commercials?  Do they not think this might devalue any TV deal they have?

Greetings, Tom the Actuary!  Long time no talk.  And yeah, USA already smacked them on the nose when they were driving people to the website during commercials years ago, so I'm kind of surprised that they're getting away with it now via the app.  I'm not sure if they're just flying under the radar or what.

  1. I wonder what UFC's TV deals are worth, comparatively speaking.

  2. Why should if USA execs watch Raw if no one else does?

  3. I've never gone on the APP while watching Raw because the app is lame, but I have played Words With Friends, Candy Crushed, surfed the internet on my phone.... people are on their phones during commercial breaks. You can't control it.

  5. whatever it is it will be less next time. Fox has been pretty disappointed with the ratings and even ppv buys are down with no "big" star as the face of UFC or monster heel (Lesnar) and tons of injuries constantly causing cards to change.

  6. Yeah, but "can't control it" and "actively inviting people to ignore your sponsors and spend time on your product instead" are two different things.

  7. Google says between 70 and 90 million per year depending on source. MMAPayout reported "up to 90 million".

Comdukakis is 100% right though, the next UFC rights deal is going to get half that. The signature UFC TV product is TUF and FOX permanently damaged that brand. It may literally not be worth saving and may need to go on hiatus.

  8. Maybe WWE could have a match finish during commercial to drive home the App's apparent importance. Not sure how USA would feel about that, but whatever.

  10. Yeah but it's also promoting engagement in the show for 3 hours with the second screen stuff. Like you vote to put a guy in a match before the break, you're not going to change channels, you are going to sit through the break to see if your guy wins.
