Your recommendation today is WWE's version of The Great American Bash, with the 2008 version. You've got Matt Hardy vs. Shelton Benjamin, Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho, CM Punk vs. Batista and Triple H vs. Edge. A solid show that doesn't have any big moments, but most of the matches delivered the goods.

Watching through Wrestle War 1990 and I've noticed the boatload of tag matches on the card. I finished Road Warriors vs. Skyscrapers Chicago Streetfight last night in what was a fun brawl. DOOM came out and had a fight with LOD afterwards as well.
ReplyDeleteAlso, looking at the Capital Combat 1990 poster, it says the price was $14.95. Why so cheap?
ReplyDeleteLooked it up and saw that too. I don't know why it was so cheap, but that's a steal, because I have heard it was a decent show minus the goofy RoboCop stuff.
ReplyDeleteWeren't WCW shows cheaper in the early -90's?
ReplyDeleteAnd on Saturday nights
ReplyDeleteNo idea. I thought they were around the same price as WWF's in the 80's. I didn't know WCW decreased prices in the 1990's. Perhaps it was because they added more PPV's.
ReplyDeleteTotally a fan of Saturday night pay pet views
ReplyDeleteHell yea, all great stuff
ReplyDeleteStarted watching King of the Ring 94 today. I have to say, really loving Art Donovan on commentary. Like watching a show with your grandpa. With that said, what were they thinking?
ReplyDeleteNeed to bring that model back.
ReplyDeleteSaturday nights are perfect for PPV's. I don't understand why TNA or WWE don't at least try to go back to it.
ReplyDeleteWatching it to. "hey Gorilla is he dead" "Absolutely not!"
ReplyDelete"How much does this guy weigh?"
ReplyDeleteWhere are you at in the show?
ReplyDeleteIt's crazy they had Donovan there for the show. I mean he is a local celeb so it made since to have him there but if you don't get a Regis or Uecker to sit in on commentary for more than a match or two who thought getting Donovan for the whole show was going to help the product, buy rate, or anything other than unintentional comedic value.
ReplyDeleteI like that they gradually start ignoring him the longer he is at the table
ReplyDeleteThe following pay per view, The Great American Bash was $14.95 as well
ReplyDeleteMy theory is that Art Donovan is an incredible wrestling announcer who went into business for himself to purposely ruin the show once Gorilla Monsoon disrespected him at the start by calling him Art O'Donnell. "HE LOOKS LIKE A BUSINESSMAN!"
ReplyDeleteI've just gotten through the first round. Had to leave for work. Will probably finish it tomorrow morning.
ReplyDelete$14.95 for Luger vs. Flair and Sting vs. Flair main events??!? That is a huge deal.
ReplyDeleteI'm to the Bret Diesel match. I've said this before but I just love that this show is full of new Generation promos.......on a show they are main eventing with Lawler vs. Piper.
ReplyDeleteHaha yeah I heard Macho drop the "New Generation" line early on in the show.
ReplyDeleteI just finished Wrestle War 1990 this morning. The best part of the build to that, especially on Clash X, was the rap on the commercial. I had the words to that stuck in my head for YEARS after wards.
ReplyDeleteI think there are pluses and minuses. I think more people are probably home on a Sunday night than they are on a Saturday. UFC works because non-wrestling fans can go grab a drink and watch at a bar or something. That just doesn't work for wrestling, IMO.
ReplyDeleteVince or Ted could have done that in that late 90s and still gotten one hell of a buyrate... doing it now would probably be pretty full of fail.
ReplyDelete"Thanks, Art!" became the "NOT GREAT, BOB!" of Gorilla Monsoon's commentary career.
ReplyDeleteI'm partial to Tuesday nights in Texas.
ReplyDeletePretty sure the reason (if I remember clearly) was that he was doing a whole bunch of NFL promos for ESPN telling his whacky stories and Vince must have been a fan of them.
ReplyDeleteBret/Nash is good and Owen/123 should have been 10 minutes longer.
ReplyDeleteYeah I skimmed through Scott's review of the show and saw that he really loved 123/Owen, so I'm excited to watch that.
ReplyDeleteReally can't wait until we get to the IYH shows next year. I'm not a fan of just five PPVs a year. I feel like the builds just drag and drag.
Sounds kind of Taboo.
ReplyDeleteIn fairness, I don't think that match was exactly meant to be the "Main Event." It was more that until 1996-97 WWF always tried to send the fans home happy by having the last match on the show be one the face would win. Since KOTR 94 was really all about the heels winning-Owen & Anvil's ruse winning Owen KOTR and keeping the title on Bret so Owen could win it-they just stuck that match last to send the fans home happy. Sort of the same deal as when the LOD/Bossman-IRS/Natural Disasters match was the final one of SurSeries '91. You obviously wouldn't call that the Main Event even though it was the last match.
ReplyDeleteI dunno, I just wish we'd have gotten more of Art Donovan's Bible Stories. David & Goliath: "He hit 'im wid a rock!"
ReplyDeleteIn fairness i don't think Piper vs. Lawler in 94 was sending many people home happy.
ReplyDeleteTrue. I should have emphasized the *Tried** to send fans home happy.
ReplyDeleteIt was 1990, that's why :)
