After years of the same old boring storylines with the same old boring Cena character (makes Hogan's run look brief and fresh), it's obvious to most diehards that something needs to change. However, most of those same diehards and other smarky style fans still give a strong live reaction whenever Cena appears, even if it is a "John Cena Sucks" sing-a-long or loud booing. Problem with that behavior is that it communicates to Vince that, good or bad, it is still a strong reaction and Cena's consistent merch sales with that means more and more Super John.
If people really want true change, I propose a "meh" movement for Cena reactions where everyone fights the urge to boo and just sit down and "Don't give a F***" whenever he appears. Silence is a much more powerful communication tool than booing in the carnival style wrestling world anyway. (Then again, they may just overdub the crowd regardless to justify anything Cena related).
Just a Christmas wish from a bored fan who's best wrestling experience this month was watching CM Punk on Taking Dead.
Yeah, but Cena's reactions are the least of his indicators. He sells merchandise and is by far the biggest house show draw they have, so until either one of those changes you're out of luck. In fact, your best bet is actually to cheer even harder for Roman Reigns when he comes back, because then that will instantly convince Vince that Reigns is the new top guy and Cena will get put out to pasture due to Vince's obsession with the newest and youngest.
You know what Reigns needs to do? Take those combat pants off and show some meaty thigh.
ReplyDeleteThat convinces Vince more than anything.
TALKING DEAD!
ReplyDelete"Taking Dead" is the name of the future documentary about Destination America putting TNA on its channel.
Imagine if back in 1995 they decided to run with Diesel for 10 years up until 2005. We miss the Austin run, the Rock run etc etc. This is what the Cena run has been like.
ReplyDeleteAll Reigns needs to do is incorporate lots of back body drops.
ReplyDelete"All Reigns needs to do is incorporate lots of baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack body drops and whatamaneuvers."
ReplyDeleteFIFY
DAMN YOU, WWE!
ReplyDeleteI have a Surface tablet, and WWE doesn't seem to have an app that runs the Network in the Windows store, so I watch the Network on my tablet's web browser. Except today, the website has decided to try and get me to subscribe and won't let me just SIGN THE FUCK IN, even though I've had the Network SINCE DAY FUCKING ONE!
90 percent of the time, I'm watching on my tablet. If I can't do that, what the fuck is the point? Got into work an hour early today and I wanted to watch some Survivor Series. The Network seems to work fine on my desktop, but it's slow as fuck and, honestly, I don't want it on my work computer.
GAH!
In his book, Y2J said it was actually Bruce Pritchard who told him his thighs looked better in shorts. Malenko tried to talk him out of it.
ReplyDeleteI know you're kidding, but as a kid, I thought Macho Man looked a lot less intimidating when he changed from the star tights to the Macho King long pants... And Hercules just didn't look as powerful when he switched to the "Power & Glory" long pants. Hell, even Gladiator Farrooq looked stronger (dumb helmet and all) than tire tracks nation leader Faarroq.
ReplyDeleteOr who knows, maybe I just like man thighs too.
Somebody call the waaaahmbulance.
ReplyDeleteYep, I always felt that the loud boos mixed in with the kids cheering always gave Cena matches a unique atmosphere. And since Cena is great at thinking on his feet, he always plays along with it, so the "haters" actually help his cause.
ReplyDeleteHe won't turn heel until this happens. 4:55 to 5:05 mark
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e61xx4mxbeI
So, everybody else is allowed to complain about the Network, just not me?
ReplyDeleteSo who were the "missed out" Rock and Austin? Kennedy and MVP?
ReplyDeleteIf it helps, I find 99 percent of the complaining about the Network to be equally obnoxious.
ReplyDeleteIt would help if WWE managed to answer a question as to why I can't access the Network on my tablet. I knew I should have gotten a Kindle Fire...
ReplyDeleteWe'll never know. It'd probably be two guys just as ridiculous as The Ringmaster and Rocky fucking Miavia.
ReplyDeleteThat damn Cena!! He really did ruin Kenny Dykstra's career!!! *Shake harder, boy!!!!*
ReplyDeleteI enjoy it mostly as background noise but pay attention to parts of it. The presentation, "close" feel of the arena, and the look of the wrestlers is all very well done.
ReplyDeleteThey change camera angles too much for me. So far, so good though.
ReplyDeleteI like Jericho's long tights SOOOOOO much better than the shorts. He had some great patterns and designs on them (also some realy uggos, but a lot of them were on purpose).
ReplyDeleteWas that a Modern Family reference? Cause if so hat's off to you
ReplyDeleteDo you want Cena to not be on top? Stop watching the show. They don't cater to the diehards because the diehards aren't going anywhere. Stop trying to come up with cute solutions.
ReplyDeleteDoes a Simpsons quote have to your end response all the time?
ReplyDeleteI try, I try. Not always easy though (and poor Parallax doesn't understand them.)
ReplyDeleteHulk Hogan without a mustache is just wrong. No wondered they booed him.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds awfully like those internet petitions that never work.
ReplyDeleteThe camera angle thing is annoying to me as well. It makes the product seem too spastic and dizzying.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it's a Vince thing.
ReplyDeleteCan you please stop? It's making me hate my favourite all-time show. It's so repetitiive and stale and boring. Like it's the same old shit for ten years.
ReplyDeletePunk and Bryan, to a degree, but that's not a perfect comparison.
ReplyDeleteLike Cena right? *rimshot*
ReplyDeleteYou mean 2 guys who were indeed given the ball, and clean wins over Cena? Yeah, Cena didn't do a thing to bury them.
ReplyDeleteFor example, Taker didn't have to be ruined for Austin and Rock to rise. Cena can still be a top guy while other stars are made.
If it helps, I find that most people who have the network, like it, but the pro-everthing crowd likes to come up with these fucking ridiculous percentages because math must not be their trade.
ReplyDeleteI'm about 99% sure about that.
It's kinda ironic that in the "50-50 booking era," WWE has become more reliant on a single wrestler than they've been at any time...ever? Or at least in the last 30 years. I even count the Hogan era in this, since the company was still able to sell out the second- and third-tier house show events headlined by IC title matches or other over talents like Randy Savage.
ReplyDeleteNow, it could be that Vince doesn't care about putting all his eggs in the Cena basket since Cena is basically his prototype (no pun intended) for a main eventer and because Cena is incredibly durable. Still, it boggles my mind that the company is so obsessed with keeping everyone on one level except for one guy.
He used to pull off the trunks look in FCW, I'm surprised he hasn't gone back to it. Of course now his abs are probably not gonna be very great looking ao maybe he should stick to the Disco Shield look.
ReplyDeleteI really think that the big crowds for "B" and "C" house shows had 100% to do with it being the only option to see competitive matches. (4 PPVs a year, 5-6 SNME's a year, the rest, total squash matches). For example, the 1st house show I went to, I was 100% SOLD on it before even hearing the card. I just wanted to see competitive matches, didn't matter who it was.
ReplyDeleteNow, any free Raw or Smackdown have more meaningful matches than any house show.
I'm cool with Cena. I just wish more people were presented on the same level as him.
ReplyDeleteI just hope he doesn't suffer from "Tito Santana syndrome" and keep his former team gear for 3 more years.
ReplyDeleteI don't know, in the late 80's early 90's, nobody was anywhere close to Hogan and Warrior. Even in the "grand finale survivor series" match, even at 3 on 5, it was a foregone conclusion, none of the 5 heels had a chance in hell of pinning either guy.
ReplyDeleteI blame Vince's age. the older you get, time starts to move faster in your head, and years go by that don't seem like such a long time. To Vince it probably doesn't seem as inscrutable that he's had the same guy on top for so long. Of course if a kid was in first grade when Cena debuted they'd be a senior in high school right now, so that'd seem like their whole lives and thinking back to when Cena beat the whole Nexus would seem nostalgic to them. Time is weird, man.
ReplyDeleteNo one said that. Just busting your chops JBL style.
ReplyDeleteTrue, but that was during jobber times. Knowing the top guy can destroy everybody and actually watching him do it every week are different animals.
ReplyDeleteLoads of people have stopped watching WWE since Cena has been on top, loads of people stopped buying PPV's and going to house shows. It didn't work.
ReplyDeleteWhat's next, a Montreal email?
ReplyDeleteSo... has someone taken a pinfall loss in their hyped debut every week now? Sexy Star and Puma in week one (not counting Chavo, as he was already "known" to US audiences), one of the three guys in the triple threat last week (Pentagon specifically but any one of them could have and it would be the same), and now the hunter guy this week? I guess week 2 avoided it unless you want to count Cortes and whoever losing to Mundo/Puma in their first match.
ReplyDeleteRegardless, it's a weird trend.
Yep, that's what I did. I don't care for the current show, so I don't watch it. I'm not sure why that's hard to understand for some folks.
ReplyDeleteI wonder what a kid's perspective is. For example, as kids, we might have been scared that Bundy or Earthquake would beat Hogan. But as adults, we'd just be "yeahyeahyeah, build up someone, then feed him to Hogan instead of making a new star. Gotta keep hogan strong!"
ReplyDeleteWhat I'm getting to is, maybe an 8 year old kid really does see Big Show or Ryback as a threat to Cena, when they feud? I wonder.
Jbl.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm 30 and 10 years ago just seems like yesterday to me.
ReplyDeleteTrue. But imagine if Hogan and Warrior had gone over everyone at the 91 Survivor Series too. And the 92 Survivor Series. And 93. And 94...
ReplyDeleteThe day is young!
ReplyDeleteThe answer is obvious. Fuck you. That's why.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Wwe
I wish Warrior hadn't flaked out. (all 3 times).
ReplyDeleteAnd Hogan kind of did run through everyone for a decade. While putting on sub par matches. At least Cena has lots of 4 star+ matches. Just saying, I have no beef with him.
Damn, I'm only 27 and even I feel like time goes by too quickly. It's surreal and depressing to think I was still just barely in my second last year of high school when Cena won his first world title and now I'm only a few years removed from the big 30 and he's STILL the main guy on top.
ReplyDeleteThat's the thing though. Earthquake and Bundy were monsters being they've always been protected and booked like monsters. Even for an 8 year old, it's hard to take Big Show seriously again after seeing him wear a diaper.
ReplyDeleteThere actually should be *more* guys on top because of the endless hours of programming so that Cena doesn't have to be "the guy" all the time. It makes less sense to have one top guy now more than ever before.
ReplyDeleteIt's the "abused girlfriend" thing, maybe if they stay long enough, WWE will realize that they truly love them, and they will change? "I KNOW they really love me deep down!"
ReplyDeleteOh I'm sure they do to a point. But after a while they get conditioned to him winning every week and drift off. Cena doesn't take "breaks" like Hogan used to. I'm sure it blends together after awhile, especially as they age.
ReplyDeleteThe kids probably see Rusev as an incredible threat then. Basically a year long super push, just like Bundy did from WM 1 to 2.
ReplyDeleteOn the latest demographics, 81% of WWE's audience was 18+. It's just not that important what the kids think.
ReplyDeleteBut won't somebody
ReplyDeleteThat's a dumb and over the top metaphor, but I get what you're saying.
ReplyDeleteAt the moment, he's the monster with the most credibilty yes, although that was nearly ruined when Steph tried to take him down a peg a couple of weeks back.
ReplyDeleteI personally do see lots of people on Cena's level, or at least close. Doesn't mean they'll beat him every single time. For example, I still see Wyatt as a potential force, and he's still very young. I don't think he was as hurt by the Cena thing as most people do.
ReplyDeleteSEX CAULDRON!?
ReplyDeleteThis one wasn't even relevant...
ReplyDeleteI'd say that makes it more important. The kids are the audience you want to retain. I got hooked as a kid with godawful 93-94 and never left. The fact that they aren't retaining kids is the problem that probably needs to be addressed most.
ReplyDeleteA lot of people here really do seem to take it personally when WWE does something they don't like. As if they are personally owed something, and it's a slap in the face.
ReplyDelete*moons you, flag of Canada painted on posterior*
ReplyDeleteThey almost did that with Daniel Bryan as they got Bryan to main event a lot of the Raw's, but since Bryan has been injured, I don't think they pushed anyone else to replace him so it seems we're getting even more of Cena.
ReplyDeleteWhat bugs me about that was its so easy to do what they tried. Have Triple H there to keep Rusev in check while Steph talks down to Lana. Easy.
ReplyDeleteThere are thousands of posts here every Monday night. When did you stop watching?
ReplyDeleteThere was a story a little while ago about a Manchester
ReplyDeleteUnited fan who drunkenly called the police after a bad refereeing decision in a
big game. Until we get to the point where the police are called about WWE's
booking, I'd say we've all been quite civilised.
I don't buy that at all, but okay. I think people are passionate about pro wrestling, and want it to be good, and when it's not that good they like to rant about it. Being that this is a pro wrestling blog, it's the appropriate place to vent about your show. I don't think it's anything more than that.
ReplyDeleteWas it a miscarriage of justice?
ReplyDelete2006-2010. And again for most of 2013. It didn't work. Guy's still there.
ReplyDeleteI sincerely hope you are right. But sometimes, I wonder. :)
ReplyDeleteNah that was two days ago.
ReplyDeleteoh fuck yeah. I didn't call the police but I did get very drunk and loud in a bar. WHY ISN'T EVERYONE ELSE AS ANGRY AS ME, I yelled pathetically. An embarrassing night. :(
ReplyDeleteYou need to stand outside of arenas and bribe all the kids with candy, and convince them to not attend the show. (Wait, that could be seen in a different light, and you might get in trouble)
ReplyDelete#LOLHOGANANDWARRIORWIN
ReplyDeleteIf I could have some kind of guarantee that, by the time
ReplyDeleteI got out of jail Cena might no longer be on top, I'd give it some
consideration.
No it's not. VJ is my bitch, and I smack him around all the time.
ReplyDeleteGotta keep one's pimp hand strong.
They just don't care enough!! I always love the "why isn't that player as angry and suicidal as I am right now? Why doesn't he care as much as I do?"
ReplyDeleteUmmm, maybe because he's level headed, and you are a psycho??
I heard the ratings for the show aren't too good. I'm hoping the promotion can still continue for many more years so are ratings really bad or is it a case where ratings aren't great, but it's still the highest rated show on the network or something.
ReplyDeleteI bleed Man United red.
ReplyDeleteI have to imagine that the ratings aren't that good because they're on a network that no one has ever heard of. I certainly had no idea I had "El Ray" on my DirecTV package until this show cropped up.
ReplyDeleteCorrect.
ReplyDeleteNow then, I've stockpiled weapons and explosives. Hmm....
Anyone know how I can get the blueprints of Titan Tower
What's going to happen if Cena tears his quad and is out for months and months?
ReplyDeleteI sent in three about how great dbry is and how he should beat brock single handedly and then pin cena and orton too in the same night, an email about chris jerichos thoughts on montreal and my theory on why benoit was killed. Just waiting for him to post them
ReplyDeleteI'm enjoying this show too. The packaging is so unique that you can't help but stay tuned. And it's also quite refreshing to see female wrestlers that can actually, you know, WRESTLE. Both Sexy Star and Ivelisse could destroy the entire WWE Divas division.
ReplyDeletePlus, it sounds like there is a possibility Alberto Del Rio may join this promotion, which would only help.
Things will feel fresh and different for a couple weeks before they start to cram someone else into the Cena Model, and then even that just goes back to normal as Cena cuts his rehab time by 80% somehow. Motherfucker needs to lose a limb to be gone longer than 4 months at this point.
ReplyDeleteI'm 34, and I'm here to tell you IT GETS WORSE. The past 4 years feel like a fucking blink.
ReplyDeleteI sit happily inbetween at 32 and can confirm same. I think the trick is probably to do as absolutely little as possible. The more bored you are the less time flies.
ReplyDeleteThat's happened several times since 2007, and WWE survived just fine every time (even though he often returned early).
ReplyDeletecenawinslol?
ReplyDeleteCena will be back within six weeks.
ReplyDeleteRemember the triceps injury that he was nursing around SummerSlam 2013 that was supposed to keep him out for 4-6 months?
He missed 2 PPVs.
Hi Hoss!
ReplyDeleteWhat I love about Cena is that he's whatever you want him to be. I know it's been said a million times, but he's your top heel if you need him to be and your top face when you need a hero. He mostly gives us good-to-great matches and drops an awesome promo on us just often enough to make me forgive how stale his character is.
ReplyDeleteI think they'd love to rely less on him even with the merchandise and house show money. But when the two guys you've brought to his level quit and suffer a career-threatening injury within a couple months of each other, and the third guy you're planning on bringing to that level is out for several months with his own injury- and for right now, at least, the FOURTH guy (Orton) who's near that level is out filming a movie- I'd probably be making "The John Cena Show Featuring John Cena, with appearances by John Cena's Friends," too.
And the Cena haters didn't enjoy his absence one bit, it was always "Just wait till Cena comes back, just you wait, he's gonna ruin everything".
ReplyDelete"What I love about Cena is that he's whatever you want him to be"
ReplyDeleteI don't want him to spout poop jokes, but he does.
Your theory is WRONG!
In fairness, the only reason he didn't ruin everything is that they'd already (temporarily) ruined the Daniel Bryan v. Authority storyline.
ReplyDeleteWell, in their defense the Daniel/Orton/Big show program that happened in the meantime was the drizzling shits so there wasn't much to enjoy.
ReplyDeleteJohn Cena has no friends. He's such a jerk.
ReplyDeleteBecause when he's gone, they just try to shoehorn someone else into the role, even The Authority, which just became the anti-Cena (in their eyes anyway).
ReplyDeleteWho needs friends when you have MUTUAL RESPECT.
ReplyDeleteI'd love it if this somehow played into the Survivor Series finish. That's why I actually like the stipulations for this match, there's a lot of stuff they could play off of. We could see a heel turn for Ziggler (having a deal in place with the Authority so he doesn't lose his job, of course). A face turn for an Authority member. A returning Orton coming back to fuck over the Authority (or accidentally costing Team Cena the match via DQ?). Sheamus returning to screw Team Cena over because Cena didn't get his back.
ReplyDeleteThat last part raises a good point that's bound to happen. I hadn't thought of it...
ReplyDeleteWhat happens when Vince tires of Cena and forgets about him to move onto the new shiny toy? It's happened with all of them. Bruno, Backlund, Hogan, Bret, Shawn, Austin...
How does Cena react to that?
It was only two PPVs, but he was legit out for three months. So that one wasn't nearly as absurd (absurd via the exaggerated amount of time he'd be out or his ridiculous healing powers, not sure which) as when he came back after, what, three months out at the '08 Rumble when he was supposedly on the shelf for 8-12 months?
ReplyDeleteIt's not really Cena...they could make him 2004-2006 cool again in a snap if they wanted. It's just that they don't exist for fans anymore, and they haven't for some time. They are entirely a corporate entity now. Everything they do is to appease stockholders, sponsors, and business connections. It's sportz entertainment based on a pro wrestling model, and that's it. If Cena dies tomorrow, they'll just insert Reigns in his place and keep trying until someone sticks. That's why there will never be another renaissance like the Attitude era...it's not even the same operation now. Not anymore.
ReplyDeleteI think Vince's main objective is always money. If Cena makes Vince money, he stays on top. It's as simple as that.
ReplyDeleteNash didn't make Vince money = dropped.
Bret wanted a shit ton of money and didn't draw = dropped
Shawn was on drugs + could cost money = dropped
Austin was far more injured than healthy and wasn't getting bitchy = dropped
Etc, etc, etc.
M-O-N-E-Y.
"If Cena dies tomorrow, they'll just insert Reigns in his place and keep trying until someone sticks. That's why there will never be another renaissance like the Attitude era"
ReplyDeleteThere may not ever be that kind of renaissance again, but "replacing the top guy with a new top guy if the top guy died" isn't a reason. I'm not sure what you're going for there.
This is why in every interview you see or hear, they always say "Vince is a brilliant businessman". They ain't talkin about THIS BUSINESS, jack.
ReplyDeleteHave u seen the wwe zooms ???!!
ReplyDeleteOh, not to mention John does it everything with a smile on his face, a song in his heart, and meaty thighs you can sink your teeth into. It's a lethal combination that gives Vince a chubber.
ReplyDeleteHey Scott, does that Wins/Loss record guy still e-mail you? I really liked reading the stats he used to put together for each quarter of the year.
ReplyDeleteI think he means no change of direction, of dare I say it “attitude”
ReplyDeleteregards the product, instead just a slotting in of a new guy into the same role while everything else remains the same. When Reigns is the top guy, I do fear that he will
suddenly develop a rather goofy sense of humour, and smile a lot more.
That would be overshadowed by bitching that Cena refused to lose clean, cause he can't ever look weak! Calling it right now. :)
ReplyDeleteHe's never kept with a guy this long tho. This is new ground
ReplyDeleteAccording to Wikipedia, Cena tore his pec in a match against Mr. Kennedy (of course) on the October 1, 2007 RAW, which supposedly was a 7-12 month rehab. He returned at the 2008 Rumble (January 27). That's a hair under 4 months. So yeah, that was an even more impressive rebound.
ReplyDeleteHowever, in late 2007 we had Batista, Edge, Undertaker, Jericho, Orton, Triple H, Jeff Hardy, and Shawn Michaels, even Umaga in the main events. There wasn't that kind of depth in Fall 2013, which is what made that 3 months seem longer to me. Does that make sense?
Exactly. It's two different points. There will never be another renaissance LIKE the Attitude era, because it's not the same operation anymore...that was an example of how it's not the same operation. We're all wrestling fans and really, Vince hasn't just CALLED wrestling "sports entertainment", he really has changed the whole model for the company. And hence, it's not Cena himself...take him out of the equation and it's still the same refried bullshit they always do, peppered with moments of greatness (Bryan, Punk, et al.)
ReplyDeleteUsing the Big Show to mooch off of Bryan's face heat might have been as bad of a decision as letting Kane give him sloppy tombstones during his short-lived title run.
ReplyDeleteI'd have to think there'll be a less acrimonious split with Cena, in large part because I expect he'll remain in the company in some capacity long after he's the top guy. Or even after his in-ring career is totally done. He's been the "company guy" waaay more than any of those guys were, and will to a large extent remain one of the visible PR/public faces of the company for some time after he's put out to pasture from being the top guy, I would think.
ReplyDeleteBut it'll be interesting to see how he reacts to it. He's seemingly had little problem being a few rungs down the WrestleMania card (has "only" main evented 5 of his 11 Manias) and has shared the top-guy spotlight with Punk and Bryan in recent years, and Reigns, Rollins and Ambrose more recently.
Oh, totally. The two great things they had going with the two other guys they'd gotten to Cena's level- Punk's feud with Heyman and Bryan's with the Authority- both had flatlined in that time.
ReplyDeleteI miss the brand split.
Chubber is my new favorite word.
ReplyDeleteWhen he vacated that title in October 2007,
ReplyDeletehe had been champion for 793 out of the previous 912 days. Man, he was champion
for a long time. God knows when he was actually scheduled to lose it.
That's fine. I'm not interested in that stuff. If there's a show I liked that I know people are going to be spazzing the fuck out about a booking decision, I just don't come on here to stay out of it.
ReplyDeleteExample: I liked Hell in a Cell overall as a show and as campy as it was, I even liked Bray's return. (I would've loved a clean Ambrose win over Rollins, but it's wrestling. There's no "ending.") I knew what the reaction here would be, so I stayed the fuck away.
Onward to Websters!
ReplyDeleteI was sure he was losing it to Orton at SummerSlam 2007, due to there being nobody else. I was pleasantly surprised when he kept it, I love super long title reigns. That damn Kennedy ruined everything.
ReplyDeleteGreat attitude, but I had that "car crash" curiosity, and just had to check the reaction. It was more absurd than I expected.
ReplyDeleteI think that's true of wrestling as a whole, throughout its history, though. We put up with a lot of warmed-over mediocrity, intelligence-insulting, rehashed matchups and tired tropes for those nuggets of awesomeness.
ReplyDeleteWhen he vacated the title (at 380 days) he was the first guy to have the belt for over a year since Randy Savage's first reign, and as you said, who knows how long he was going to hold it
ReplyDeleteBruno Sammartino might've breathed a sigh of relief though.
What makes you think that Big Show was trying to mooch off Bryan's face heat?
ReplyDeletehttp://www.wrestlestars.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/Big-Show-Yes-chant-in-crowd.jpg
Oh yeah.
Scott seems to push Reigns even harder than wwe does.
ReplyDeleteI'd gladly take 5 more years of Cena as opposed to boring ass Roman Reigns, whacky slappy Dean Ambrose and King Curtis 2.0 Bray Wyatt. Yeah the wwe had something with Punk and Bryan but Vince didn't care now that ship has long since sailed.
ReplyDeleteJust 900 more days to catch Bob Backlund in 3rd place!
ReplyDeleteJobber, no :(
ReplyDeleteI think it's a case of Vince getting older and mellow in his old age. If Vince was 20 years younger, he'd probably would have put Cena out to pasture 5 years ago.
ReplyDeleteHe should be thoroughly fucking ashamed of himself, that man.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy the car crash of watching two guys with 20k posts on smark blog between them go back and forth about how they're above it all. Its really classic!
ReplyDeleteOnly 750 if you count his World title reigns! (which you shouldn't but I'm sure somebody out there will argue that they should count).
ReplyDelete"That damn Kennedy ruined everything."
ReplyDeleteWhich is why Oswald shot him.
Wait... we are talking about JFK, right?
Ooh, good point. I really should be gazing intently at two wikipedia pages right now, not just one.
ReplyDeleteI just hope really plays the political game and buries those three guys deep under titaz towers. I want a zayn, Rollins, cesaro, Neville, Kenta, devitt, Steen based wwe.
ReplyDeleteI always saw it as more of a tribute, than trying to steal it. But oh well. He was just the "challenger of the month" anyway.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the tribute angle would stand up in plagiarism court, where Big Show will one day be sentenced to be burned at the stake.
ReplyDeleteI want that too, but Ambrose and Bray deserve to go into that list as well.
ReplyDeleteAgreed; I think that's what Big Show intended it as- taking up for his buddy and all that- but it wasn't a good look.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I think it really depends on how his two movies go over next year.
ReplyDeleteIf Cena comes off looking good, he good look forward to what Batista is doing now -- a few strong supporting roles every year, maybe a low-budget action film where he plays the lead. Heck, The Marine didn't do half-bad in theaters and home video sales, WWE just couldn't follow it up. He's not going to be The Rock, but he could easily be in Batista's position.
If Cena starts doing okay in Hollywood, he'll be less inclined to clutch onto his spot in WWE.
Gmorning.
ReplyDeletepretty typical of wresting everywhere now. I miss the days of the hard camera being used 95% of the time. Not only is it more aesthetically pleasing to me but it cuts down on closeups that destroy suspension of disbelief on too many moves.
ReplyDeleteFor a long time WWE was fantastic at using angles that made moves the best looking and cut away at the right time for maximum impact. Now? Just awful. Wrong angles for all kinds of moves to expose the lack of contact, early release, etc.
See, this is the kind of stuff I almost never see because I'm never in the live threads and mostly skip over the flame wars elsewhere. Who was going at it that night?
ReplyDeleteYou're assuming Big Show himself commandeered the "Yes!" chants.
ReplyDeleteI figured it was the writers/McMahons trying to turn Bryan's "Yes!" chant into a generic babyface chant.
Y'know, if I ever got 15 minutes with a truth serum-ed Vince McMahon, what their plans were with Daniel Bryan as of a year ago at this time would definitely be one of my questions.
ReplyDeleteI only check the live threads when I do see a good Raw or PPV segment, and I'm curious as to how they can somehow, someway, twist it into some sort of negative. They never disappoint.
ReplyDeleteYou really want to get Cena out of WWE?
ReplyDeleteGo see THE NEST and TRAINWRECK a dozen times each next year and fill the internet with positive comments about Cena's performances.
Nothing got the Rock and Batista out of wrestling faster than multimillion dollar movie offers.
I wonder what's the WWE version of TNAMecca?
ReplyDeleteDoes even Vince's sub-conscious know the difference between wrestling reality and wrestling myth these days?
ReplyDeletedon't hold your breath for WWE to acknowledge what a crappy person/friend Cena is (character wise). They never did it with Hogan, or had many of the same issues, and they haven't done it in the past with situations like Zack Ryder. Someone might turn on Cena, but it will be because there a horrible, jealous person not because they were left to get their ass kicked in the ring while Cena sat in the back. Same situation as Orndorff and Hogan or even Savage and Hogan (where Hulk was a total douche for abandoning Savage in the ring as if Hulk was some kind of medical professional integral to Liz's recovery)
ReplyDeleteI always miss the live threads because of the time difference. It's a real fucking shame. :(
ReplyDeleteAfter the PPV's Byan headlined bombed Meltzer reported than Bryan would go back to the midcard again and just be used as a guy that had good matches. I'm sure Vince saw Bryan as a good worker and probably respected his opinion, but probably didn't see him as a main eventer.
ReplyDeleteAndre "Hey buddy, you've been champ for a good few years now, mind if I get a title shot? I'm an old guy but I'd like to see if I've still got it."
ReplyDeleteHulk: "OH GOD NO WHY ANDRE WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS YOU BASTARD"
You guys do that, and I'll start working on the next phase of "How to get John Cena out of Hollywood".
ReplyDeleteIf he did end up in Hollywood, I wouldn't give one percent of a shit. It's not like I watch many movies in the first place.
ReplyDeleteLOLCENAWINS is always the most likely outcome, but they absolutely have acknowledged Cena's character flaws. Ryder went the fuck off on him in that storyline. Cena's perceived phoniness and other character flaws have been referenced and at times worked into storylines with Rock, Punk, and Daniel Bryan too.
ReplyDeleteBut let's ignore that and say that it's never mentioned! Let's also ignore all the times he jobs clean and claim he never puts people over!
ReplyDeleteIt would be great if Vince was so doped up on about 75 different meds that it would motivate him to write a great book like Robert Evans did with his second book last year.
ReplyDeleteThis.
ReplyDeleteIf Cena started making more offers from Hollywood, he'd reduce his wrestling schedule accordingly. Heck, he missed at least four or so RAWs this year to film movies (including the recent one he missed to film his appearance on Parks and Rec).
It's like how Hogan used to take time off to film movies back in the 1990s, or how Rock used to before he got so successful in movies that he peaced out completely.
no one takes it personally and it gets tired seeing you keep saying it. Go to any message boards on a topic and people are passionate. Passion doesn't equate to crying in your beer because Ambrose jobbed to a hologram or Cena beat the Authority one on five sunday. It simply equates to being passionate both about what you don't like and talking about what you would like to see. I've used this analogy before but it's no different than a sports fan. People spend inordinate amounts of time bitching about trades, coaching moves, who's not hustling, etc. while offering their own "expert" opinions on what big moves the team should make to win it all. It's the nature of humans and has nothing to do with "taking it personally." But looking down on others by pretending posters are deeply broken up by the occurrences in WWE seems to make you feel superior. That many not be the case but it is absolutely how you come off.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was listing the clean jobs Cena has done in recent years the other day- I swear this is true- someone said Bryan and Punk don't count because Cena had an elbow injury against Bryan and was distracted against Punk, so neither of those counted, and it was really just Rock and Brock beating him clean.
ReplyDeleteNever ceases to amaze me.
If it's anything like Drew Magary's version of Robert Evans in his weekly NFL column at Deadspin, I want to read that book.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. Nothing is ever good enough it seems.
ReplyDeleteDon't start with him on Bray.
ReplyDeleteyep, I stopped watching in 2006ish mostly due to not liking Orton and Cena as the new generation on top. Now with the network I admit I've dabbled in watching some stuff this year, but this past week I FFed through 85% of Raw and that was the first episode I had watched in 6-8 weeks. I actually watch it more to know what everyone is chatting about here and on another board I frequent than out of any enjoyment (but I was curious to see how they did Grumpy Cat).
ReplyDeleteThere are thousands of mocking posts, half by people who don't even watch the show.
ReplyDeleteNothing is like the original Robert Evans so yes it is great. Opinions vary but personally I think it's better than The Kid Stays In The Picture. The book's available on Kindle.
ReplyDeleteAs it relates to football, there's a great story in there about his now legendary ESPN Sunday Night Football voice-overs and how that came together.
Can you imagine how butthurt Vince would be if Cena made it in Hollywood after he poured a bunch of dough into duds like The Reunion and Legendary in a failed attempt to make Cena a movie star?
ReplyDeleteWe'd get vindictive segments on RAW with replays of Cena's "I'll never leave wrestling" promos from his feud with The Rock and speeches about how Cena took his ball and went to Hollywood.
So you only come here to get annoyed at other people's wrestling opinions and then pick fights with them? Good lord you're an angry troll.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you could just do "them" a favor and stop bothering everyone?
Finding a WWE version of TNAMecca needs to be high on his priority list.
ReplyDeleteI guess it would be more likely that it stays on the air because of dvd sales (like several other shows on television have).
ReplyDeleteStill butthurt from a month ago, eh? Maybe you should let it go. :)
ReplyDelete"If people really want true change, I propose..."
ReplyDeleteLOL
I wonder what kind of drawing power Cena's gonna have down the road (probably like 10 years from now at his pace) when he finally retires and segues into being one of the once-a-year part timers. Will fans be psyched to see John Cena after a 12-month absence the way they are with Rock or Taker etc, or does the "Cena sucks" stuff continue forever? Has Cena been so overexposed that even after a long time away he won't mean much as a special attraction?
ReplyDeleteStop trying to make love to Mike. He's taken.
ReplyDeleteI guess it depends just how shit the WWE becomes in his absence. Rock probably wouldn't have been as insanely over as he was in 2011/12 if it wasn't for the fact we'd mainly been wading through shit ever since he left. We could view the Cena era as underrated in a decades time.
ReplyDeletePeople really want Cena to turn heel or go away? I have 2 words.
ReplyDeleteOnline. Petition.
That never stops Parallax.
ReplyDeleteAweome stuff Jobber
ReplyDeleteAll he needs to is tweet something vaguely mysognistic, and maybe the online Social Justice Warriors will have him taken out.
ReplyDeleteYeah it's really interesting what the nostalgia for this era will end up being. It always ends up being that fans look past the bad shit to focus on the top of teh card stuff that they loved, such as Hogan/Andre/Savage/Warrior in the 80s or Austin/Rock/Foley/DX in the Attitude Era.
ReplyDeleteBut is there that same love for the Cena main event stuff for the 2000s? Yeah Cena was the main guy, but I feel like the 2000s really got by on having a supporting cast of big stars left over from the Attitude Era, like HBK/HHH/Edge/Jericho/Taker/Rey etc. Will fans in 10 years long back fondly specifically on teh adventures of John cena?
It's also what's exposing WWE so badly now, in that they were so bad about creating stars and memorable midcarders in the 2000s, and now the roster is just incredibly bare. Your veteran holdovers are still the Attitude Era guys (Jericho, RVD, Henry, Kane, Show etc) because they did such a bad job of creating memorable stuff since then.
It's bad there but worse here. There are varying degrees of bad.
ReplyDeleteas long as you are not connected to one of those boxes that are used to get the ratings it really doesn't matter if one does tune in or not.
ReplyDeleteit does obviously matter if someone stopped buying ppvs since Cena has become the top guy.
I think it is "personal" in the same way other movies, tv series, books, music etc. are - if it "means" something to you, it obviously has a personal value.
ReplyDeleteSounds like Vince has commitment issues
ReplyDeleteI think its a case of Cena not pissing off Vince by using his position to do what he wants to do instead of what Vince wants.Hogan, Hart, HBK, Austin would argue with Vince to get things changed to make them happy.Cena just keeps his mouth shut and does what he's told.
ReplyDeletepersonally I don't. but there are others that to me didn't seem to have the right attire. for example I always wondered how Christian would look in shorts because those long pants look horrible (the cut of them made his legs look awful in it. to me it instantly came across much better when he wore jeans).
ReplyDeletenope. did that for several years. doesn't work either.
ReplyDeleteReigns isn't much of an upgrade.
ReplyDeleteReigns. But then he got injured too.
ReplyDeleteLooks like I'm going to have to check it out too. Is the commentary in English at all?
ReplyDeletesorry, but how is "potential force" on "Cena's level"?
ReplyDelete
